on your laptop keyboard (i'm assuming its a pc) you'll see some keys have writing in blue on them. to use the alt functions that we normally use the keypad for, you must press the function (blue "fn" button at the same times as pressing alt and the number. the numbers you should use are in blue on the keyboard. hope that helps.

The 'alt' symbols usually don't work on laptops. I have tried it myself, and have failed many times. I don't know why they don't appear. But if you have a dock for your new laptop, an plug it into their and use a keyboard, it may work
(M=0, JKL=123, UIO=456 and 789 being, well, 789!). This is how some laptop makers replicate a separate numerical pad on smaller keyboards. So if I want to enter the £ sign, instead of going Alt+156, I go Alt+Fn+156.
