Default How To Make Hair For Your Webkinz Using Yarn: New and Improved!

I came up with sewing yarn onto my webkinz about a year and a half ago when I looked at the loss of hair of my horses. A horse should always have a flowing and long mane. So I thought of ways to somehow add hair. Yarn turned out to be the perfect material!

This is how long the yarn is. She's channeling Rapunzel!

And you can do all these yourself too! Just follow the directions below!

What you need
-Yarn (color of your chose)
-A regualar sewing needle with thread
-Scissors
-A webkinz (of your choice) of course

How to make hair for your webkinz: The track method

1. Measure your webkinz heads from the left to the right with the webkinz's back towards you .
Lets say it's 5 inches just as a example.

2. Cut the yarn directly from the ball 7 inches. This will be the base on which u will tie the yarn on.

3. Next cut more yarn 2x the length u want. Undo the yarn. U will see four thin strands. Get those four strands and fold them in half.

4. Then tie on those four strands folded in half on ur first yarn u cut 7 inches. Repeat step 3 until until there is 1 inch left on both ends.

5. Then hand sew the new track (first track you create) around the perimeter webkinz's head using a regular sewing needle with thread. Have the thread color match the yarn color or the color of the webkinz's head.

Make sure it is as straight and tight as can be. Follow these steps as much as you need to cover your webkinz's head. For bangs, just sew on a short tracks where the "natural hairline" begins and ends (across).

You can do a braided extension by

1. Cutting the yarn from the yarn ball double the length you want.

2. Then unravel it. You will see four thin strands

3. Fold it in half using your fingers.

4. Tie it on to the yarn on the tracks (at the scalp)

5. Braid the yarn by dividing the yarn on the tracks and the yarn you tied on into three equal sections. Stop braiding after a few seconds. This will keep it "locked" in place.

6. Secure it by tying a strand of yarn where you stopped braiding.

When you are doing braided extensions, make sure you tie on braided extensions on more than one strand. Two at the very least.

If the yarn on the tracks are long and you want to to longer braided extensions, first get the tracks that end at the hairline (perimeter) (these will hide the braided extensions. Then gather the yarn in the middle of the head. This is where the braided extension will go. Then follow the steps above. Expect braid the yarn until the shorter strands end. You can also do tracks equal in the length of the braided extensions to hide them

How to put yarn on a webkinz horse's tail

Method 1: Sewing tracks on

Measure the width of the tail (around). Make tracks using the steps I first posted and sew them on going around the tail and the beginning and end should meet. Make tracks to start at the top and finish at the end of the tail.

Method 2: Tying yarn on

Tie sections of unraveled yarn onto the whole tail going starting at the top and going down. When you are done, you should easily be able to part the yarn up and down.

Method 3: Doing braided extensions on the "real hair"

Do braided extensions incorporating the original tail hair the webkinz horse came with. Tie yarn onto the original tail hair and braided them together. Stop and secure the little braided with the original tail hair's length ends.

Other information that may be helpful

If you decide to to do the yarn in the braid. You can use rubber bands to tie them. I know rubber bands are not good for human hair, but yarn strands are ticker than human hair. So therefore a rubber band will not rib out the yarn. You can also use a rubber band for if you want to do a ponytail.

If you're webkinz is black in color and the sewing treads are a lighter color, then you can actually use sharpie to color those treads and disguise them. It works really well. But by very careful not to get any sharpie on the yarn. Sharpie DOES NOT wash off!

There is a way to straighten the yarn without a hair straighter. You can use a blow dryer. But you have to wet the yarn (in a sink) first. You can even use your some of your favorite shampoo and/or conditioner! Then give the yarn one squeeze, then hold the blow dryer on the yarn (like you would with hair straighter) and slowly go down all the way to the end. But DON'T pause for long or else, you'll burn the yarn off and be left with "marks". This will however thin the yarn once every strand is straight and dry. So a lot of yarn to start with does help! The result is fabulous. The yarn will also look shiny and feel so smooth if you washed it with shampoo and/or conditioner!

Here are some styling ideas

1. You can make thin, but noticeable multiple braids. About 10

2. You make make a medium sized braid on one side.

3. You can get a fake small flower from ur local craft store and tie it on ur webkinz.

4. You can get get a bow and sew it on

5. Tie it in a ponytail leaving the bands.

When the tracks start to loosen ( it will happen ) don't take it out unless its really bad and starting over is the best thing. Other wise just re sew it in without starting over.

To create waves, put the yarn in a really tight braid. Undo it in two days and divide the waves to create smaller curls. Keep dividing in until you are satisfied. Then put a little bit of hairspray in the yarn. Do two Zs in the front and back. Let the hairspray settle. Once it is settled, you're all done!

The more fullness you have, it will create the illusion of the yarn being a little shorter once you more yarn that isn't needed.

There is a way to part the tracks, but you must sew them on the right way. Just make your tracks following the steps. Then sew them on facing each other in the middle or sides.

If you're doing little braids for the all the yarn, they have to stay this way. It is very difficult to un-braid them. If you don't want the little braids, you have to take out the tracks and start all over.

When you unravel the yarn, you will see that each strand is curly. To get all the strands to be straight, bring your webkinz to the sink and wet it and use shampoo. You can not change it back.
If you already sewed on tracks, but the length of the yarn is too short for you, you can make it longer without taking the tracks out. Just these thing which I call braided extensions close to the "scalp" of the webkinz (make sure they are divided into little equal sections before you braid the yarn on) to make it longer. i did this with my horse, Black Beauty and it turned out great! You can also use this method to create more thickness

it would be really cool if u do for instance 3 yellow tracks and 1 black track.
Black and yellow work great together. U can try 3 black tracks and one purple track.
The combinations are endless. So try it and share ur pictures!
