Happy Birthday Antarctica!
Since the 1800, various nations including Great Britain, Australia, Chile and Norway, have laid claim to parts of Antarctica. This led to diplomatic incidents and even armed battles. After WWII and the invention of the nuclear bomb, there were suggestions to use Antarctica for nuclear testing... and the Cold War was in progress. However, President Eisenhower saw things differently and diplomatic efforts between the USA and the Soviet Union led to the signing of the Antarctica Treaty on Dec 1st, 1959. All the major world powers agreed to set Antarctica aside as a military-free zone. There would be no army there, and no testing of any type of weapons including nuclear weapons. Scientific studies were allowed, and scientists were given the right to travel through all areas, even those claimed by specific countries. Everyone agreed to postpone all territorial claims to a later date in the future, which made it easier to reach agreements on environmental and other issues.
This treaty, written in a spirit of arms control and political cooperation, has set the standard for the various policies that continue to govern Antarctica. There is no government, and the continent is politically neutral.
Some facts about Antarctica:
No one even knew it existed until 1820, and the first landing on it was in 1895.
Does it snow a lot there? No. Antarctica is a desert. There is no rainfall at all, because it’s too cold; and very little snow falls, but it doesn’t melt either. It just stays there. The snow is 1-2 miles thick, 2-5 km thick. Much of the land under the snow would be under sea water if there was no snow.
What about the South Pole? The southernmost place on Earth, the South Pole is the location of the Amundsen-Scott Station, an American research facility built in 1956. The South Pole was first reached by a Norwegian named Roald Amundsen in 1911, and soon after by British Robert Scott.
Does time fly for the 20 to 50 scientists and support staff stationed there? Possibly, because there are only two days in the year there: one extremely long day lasting six months, and one extremely long night lasting the other six months. That’s right, it’s the only place on Earth apart from the North Pole, where the sun is continually up from October through March, ant then it sets and the darkness lasts from April through September.
How c-c-cold? Down to -73º C or -100º F. But why is it so cold? Because 80% of the sun’s rays are reflected back out into space by the snow and ice, and the remaining 20% are absorbed by the cloud or by the atmosphere, so that almost none reach the ground.
How can I get there? All official travel to Antarctica goes through New Zealand. Flights are from Christchurch NZ to the McMurdo Station, and therefore New Zealand time is used through Antarctica. There is also tourist access through Chile. All the population is transient, usually remaining there for one summer only, but occasionally remaining for two or even three years, usually because they missed the last boat out. There is no winter travel.
If you went there, you would be part of a select group because fewer than 200,000 people have ever been there.
What animals live in Antarctica? 21 species of penguins, seals, whales, krill (tiny shrimp-like) and a variety of fish, but there are no native people, no land mammals at all, and no polar bears (that would be the Arctic).
Have a great Wednesday, and if it's cold where you are, just think it's a lot colder in Antarctica!

Did you know that not only is it Antarctica's Birthday but it is also Romania's National Day. Much like our Canada Day and Independence day in USA??
