In 1840, Antarctica was discovered by American naval officer and explorer, Charles Wilkes who had set off on an expedition to explore the Pacific.

Antarctica is a frozen, windswept continent, so hostile and remote that it has no permanent inhabitants.

Scientists working here have made many discoveries from studying Antarctica’s land and atmosphere, and from clues buried beneath the ice. These discoveries also reveal signs of changes in the future that could affect us all.

Facts about Antarctica:
  • Wind speeds of 351 kilometres per hour (218mph) have been recorded on Antarctica
  • Antarctica is more than 58 times the size of Great Britain
  • Antarctica has no native population but scientists and support staff from 28 countries live and work there. About 1,200 people spend the winter on Antarctica - about a third are scientists and the rest are support staff. Over the last decade, the number of tourists visiting Antarctica each year has more than doubled to nearly 30,000
  • On July 21 1983, scientists at Vostok research station recorded a temperature of -128.56 Fahrenheit (-89.2°C), the coldest temperature ever recorded anywhere
  • Antarctica’s vast ice sheet is actually on the move. Due to gravity and the ability of the ice to 'flow', it creeps towards the coasts at an average rate of ten metres per year
  • Antarctic cod have a special 'anti-freeze' protein in their blood that stops them freezing up completely!
  • Antarctica was the last continent to be discovered
  • Antarctica is the best place in the world to find meteorites
  • In the first half of the 20th century, the UK, New Zealand, France, Norway, Australia, Chile and Argentina all made territorial claims to parts of Antarctica, sometimes for the same pieces of land
  • International efforts to reduce CFCs since the discovery of the ozone hole in 1985 has stopped it getting any bigger, but it will take another 50 years or more to repair itself

Today, we would also like to take a moment and recognize the works of one of the greatest men in US history. He fought for equality for everyone. He gave his life so that we could all be seen as equals. Martin Luther Kind Jr. Day is celebrated in the US on the 3rd Monday in January. His actual birthday is Jan. 15th.
