Default Welcome to Alaska on the Oct 18 DCT

On Oct 18 1867, the US formally took possession of Alaska, after buying it from Russia for $7,200,000. A bargain at less than $0.02 per acre, since Alaska measures more than half a million square miles, twice the size of Texas. The President at the time was Andrew Johnson,
and the acquisition of Alaska was championed by his secretary of state, William Henry Seward.

Russia wanted to sell its Alaska territory, which was remote, sparsely populated and difficult to defend, to the U.S. rather than risk losing it in battle with a rival such as Great Britain. Initially, the American public opposed the purchase and called it Seward's Folly, believing Alaska to be barren and worthless. Some of this opposition was also due to the unpopularity of President Johnson, who would later be impeached and acquitted. However, public opinion became much more positive when gold was discovered in the Klondike River in 1896, sparking the Gold Rush.

Alaska became the 49th state on January 3, 1959, and is now recognized for its vast natural resources. Today, 25 percent of America's oil and over 50 percent of its seafood come from Alaska. It is also the largest state in area, about one-fifth the size of the lower 48 states combined, though it remains sparsely populated. The name Alaska is derived from the Aleut word alyeska, which means "great land."

Here are a few more fun facts about Alaska:

Alaska has 29 volcanoes... over half the world's glaciers... and 3 million lakes!

Summer gets 24 hours of daylight in some areas, and winter gets 24 hours of night.

Alaska's State Sport is Dog Mushing. Once, dog mushing was the main form of transportation; but now dog sled racing is a popular winter sport.

Alaska's State Gem is Jade. There is a big mountain filled with dark green jade on the Seward Peninsula.

Three kinds of bears! there are Kodiak, Grizzly and Polar bears in Alaska.

Russia is only 55 miles away.

Happy Birthday, Alaska!
