Question retainer?

heyy guys
i have braces now and i'm getting them off next year..i think januaryish...anyways, do u get a retainer after u get braces? or is that only for some people?
also if u do how long do u need to use it, and do u have to keep going to the ortho while u have it?
cuz i have one friend who didn't get one (that i know of) and one friend that did

I think you have to wear them for six months after you get them off to keep them from separating again...

And then after that you just wear it at night... for the rest of your life, I think... o_0 The middle-aged intern at my orthodontist says she's worn hers every night for 20 years...

No one really does that, though...

There are different kinds of retainers out there, permanent and removable. I have a perm on my bottom teeth. My bottom teeth are kept straight. I have a removable one for the top and my teeth have shifted some. Different orthodontists have different theories. I know after your braces are taken off, most do ask that you were it all the time except to eat for a certain amount of time, then only at night.

The practice used to be that you wore the retainer all day for so many months, then only at night for so many months and the you were done. Nowadays, most orthodontists recommend either going permanent or for a lifetime. Most people's teeth will shift without the retainer.

If you think about it, why pay thousands of dollars to fix something only to turn around and not maintain it?
