The Labor Day week-end usually marks the end of summer, when school and work begin in earnest. But these last three days of leisure are traditionally spent in fun family activities: picnics, fireworks and outings such as visits to the Zoo.
A picnic is most fun when it's unplanned. Spread a beach towel or blanket under a tree in your yard, or pack everything quickly into the trunk of the car and drive to the nearby park. Or you and your friends could bike there, putting everything you need in your backpack.
Get a bit of exercise by throwing a frisbee around, fly a kite, or just toss a ball to your puppy! A game of horseshoes, badminton or a sack race is also a great way to work up an appetite. Croquet is the classic picnic game if you have a large expanse of grass.
The food: use ice packs! don't risk food poisoning by allowing your egg salad sandwiches to sit in the warm sun. Egg salad sandwiches, chicken salad wraps, pita pockets filled with your favourite salad... add some cheese cubes and cherry tomatoes, but first use these for an impromptu game of checkers (don't throw them at your friends... or sure, why not? go ahead, I won't tell).
Follow up with a cold can of your favourite soda pop or iced tea, and a banana, apple or chocolate bar. After all, it's a picnic! Have fun!
