If you are a beginner, do NOT tune with the big pegs on top. Tune with the little ones at the bottom. (i found this out the hard way last year and broke 2 strings)

then find an online tuner, and just keep turning it until it sounds right

Let's see I am a cello player and my teacher always says not to tune it ourselves cause we're inexperienced or something How about you just tell him you need to see him? Or just go to a music store.

I played cello for 2 1/2 years.
I suggest taking it to a music store and having them tune it.
Musical instrument are incredibly difficult to tune and if you pull the string too tight it might break.
I've had this happen on me before. I also had a friend one time break a peg when she tried to tune the cello herself.
A music store should do it if you take it in.
A music school will do it as well. I always took mine to a music school when I broke a string and had a professional fix it for more.
Strings for cellos ARE NOT cheap because cello strings are fairly thick.
I suggest playing it safe (excuse the horrible pun) and take it to a music school/store and have one of them tune it up for you.
Then be gentle with it. Sometimes (depending on how tight people tighten the strings) the string will come a little loose and go out of tune.

If you're playing a song for your class, is there any way you can see your music teacher Tuesday morning and have him tune your cello for you?
