Escape Carmageddon, Join us on the July 16th Chat Thread
"Carmageddon" is the name Los Angeles residents are giving the inevitable and likely epic traffic tie-up that will result when a 10-mile stretch of the 405 Freeway is closed for construction from Friday night to Monday morning between two of the nation's busiest interchanges.
Just when you thought that congestion on the 405 freeway (Southern California’s major north-south road artery that connects Orange and Los Angeles counties) couldn’t get any worse it is. Construction officially begins at midnight on Friday, but officials say on-ramps will begin closing at 7 p.m. Lanes will then start shutting down at 10 p.m. The roads will be closed until Monday morning at 5:00 am. Obviously those driving cars will encounter the most headaches, but it won’t be nearly as bad for motorcyclists as California is the only state where you can legally split lanes. This makes getting to where you need to go much easier no matter how bad congestion is. The 405 carries about 281,000 cars a day! What exactly are they doing?
The I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project will add a 10-mile HOV lane and improve supporting infrastructure such as ramps, bridges and sound walls on the San Diego Fwy. (I-405); while widening lanes from the Santa Monica Fwy. (I-10) to the Ventura Fwy. (US-101). This project will reduce existing and forecasted traffic congestion on the I-405 and enhance traffic operations by adding freeway capacity in an area that experiences heavy congestion. In addition to these modifications, the project will improve both existing and future mobility and enhance safety throughout the corridor.
So take this time to sit back and relax this weekend. Just think of the gas money you are saving
