Default book recommendations

hey so i haven't read a book for fun since september 2013
i think that's due to mixture of not being able to find anything i liked and what happened to the author of the last book i read

anyway, over thanksgiving and christmas break i really want to read some books

i like the following genres
  • fantasy
  • YA fiction (not romance)
  • historical fiction
i can read just about anything though, except for mystery and romance
i don't really want to get into a series, but if it's good then maybe i'll give it a shot

please do not recommend any john green books or divergent

If you like historical fiction, I suggest The Red Badge of Courage (it's set in the American Civil War). Me & Emma is also one of my favorites (it has some violence in it tho). The Yearling was good (but it's kinda old).
I know you said you don't want a series BUT The Chronicles of Narnia are amazing.
That's what I've read that fits your preferences. I hope it helps. Good luck!

I'd suggest A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin. It's just straight fantasy. I found it very enjoyable and it's not a terribly long book. If you enjoy it there's three more books in the series, but it doesn't end in a cliffhanger so you don't have to read the rest of the series if you don't want to.
