Hope you all like it!
She walks
alone
to class with her books
in hand

Some boys walk by
laughing at
her clothes, he hair, her face
One looks back, eyes soft
apologizing to her silently
Dark curly hair framing his
f a c e

She smiles, but
covers her mouth
so they won't laugh at it
too

She closes her locker
d o o r
Tears shining in her pretty blue
e y e s

She walks home
all
a l o n e

H e
catches with her
apologizing for his
a c t i o n s

Her heart
l e a p s
He talks to her!
Finally, someone likes
h e r!

She walks home
after he leaves
Hand pulling open
the rusty
k n o b

She looks around warily
hoping he's not home

Just as she puts
a worn sneaker on the
s t e p

He is home!
She runs
somewhere, anywhere
away from
h i m

He grabs her arm
Jus as she is almost to safety

He drags her into her room
She's screaming
Please, don't Daddy...

As his first hit breaks her
s k i n
She cries
knowing all is over

He leaves
She's lying on the floor
bruised and
b a t t e r e d
Still faintly whispering
Please, don't Daddy

She raises herself up sneaking into her closet
and grabbing a
k n i f e

As she holds it to her wrist
She cries
For herself
For
h i m
Knowing she'll never see
his dark, curly hair or smiling face
ever again

She holds the knife to her skin
and walks to the bathroom
Her shaking hand grasps the plastic bottle of
p i l l s

She goes back to her room and swallows them
a l l

She lies on her bed, the world
b l u r r e d

Before her eyes
finally
c l o s e
She smiles
his face in her
m i n d

There she lies
eyes closed
for the last time
Tears finally dry
a sweet smile
on her eternal sleeping
f a c e

The next morning, he stands at his
l o c k e r
tears shining in his
e y e s
For he knows she is
g o n e
He never told her how he
f e l t .....

And this one:
He walks on the dusty sand
Eyes darting beneath his night-vision glasses

As a grimy boot steps
softly into the
doorway

A child cries
lying in the corner
curled up in a tiny
ball

He walks over to
the rsobbing child
turning her grimy
tear-stained face
up to him, pleading

He places his gloved
hands on either side
of the thin and bony
body
He raised the child
onto his strong shoulder

She buries her scratched and
bruised face into his bulletproof
vest, sniffling softly

He runs a thickly gloved
hand over her tangled
black hair.
She looks up at him
Curved chocolate brown eyes
Smiling silently at him

She puts her head back down
onto his shoulder

An armored boot raises
a cloud of dust
as he creeps out into into
the dusky morning

The sun bareky peeking
her sleepy face over
the bomb-battered ruins
of buildings that once
were....

His eyes travel to a
sign, broken in half
with faded letters spelling
Baghdad in loopy Arabic scrawl

As he reaches the outskirts
of the battered town
an explosion rocks
the dusty ground

He starts running
never looking back
The child clings to him tightly
Sensing his
f e a r

Then the rat-a-tat of
the machine guns sound
bullets whizzing past his hard helmet

He is almost to his Humvee, he can see it in sight!
But no! He won't make it unless he takes off the weight
laden on his back

He peels off his bulletproof vest
wrapping the little girl in his camoflauge coat

As he runs
bullets whizzing past his ears
something
hits him in the back
he drops to
the ground,
arm still around the
girl

He stumbles back to his feet,
blindly stumbling to his Humvee
He blindly hands the girls off to one of
his comrades

He then falls
on the dusty desert floor
His buddies lift him onto the
seat of the Humvee

His last
wheezing breath
escapes his
chapped lips...

----------------

A dark-haired young woman
walks to a graveston
placed under an oak tree

She places a single
rose
onto the grave
Of the man
who saved her-
the crying little girl
not so many years ago.
