I hate to be the spoiler, but the idea behind this suggestion (while great for the consumer) is not a wise business move.

Imagine if there were a bunch of beanie baby stores in every town in America - how profitable would they be right now? Not very, because demand for things like this is fleeting.

Besides, Ganz makes more money by selling to the middlemen than they would if they were to try to open stores everywhere to sell their stuff.

I have no doubt they are doing everything they can to increase production to meet the demand, because they realize that today's hot thing can become yesterday's Teddy Ruxpin, and they want to make the money while it is hot. With the competition (shining stars and others that are coming out), they have to increase production or lose sales. And, while people here might think that shining stars is not as good as webkinz (which I can't say one way or the other -- and don't want to get a debate started here), the fact is that if you go to Hallmark to buy a plush online toy for your niece, and they don't have webkinz (and you don't know any difference between webkinz and shining stars), you might buy the other one. During this "drought", when I have inquired to stores about their webkinz availability, many have tried to sell me on something different.

So, the idea of having a webkinz store in every town, while novel, is impractical and a non-starter from a profitable business point of view (unless you are willing to pay $30 or more for the webkinz).

You have a good point, Hamlet. I actually would prefer the retail stores do something, not have Ganz open their own stores, now that I think about it.

Did anyone follow the link? I'm telling you, stores are getting the idea that we want something more!

I followed the spotsanddotstoys.com link.

Here are some things on thier sales page:

St. Benard Webkinz
Retired
$40.00

Unicorn Webkinz
Retired
Add to Cart : $100.00

Price Gouge

Series 1 Trading Cards

In Store This Week & Online
Add 1 pack : $4.00

I know this is America and stores can set whatever prices they want, but Trading cards should sell for $2.95 a pack. Selling the Unicorn for $100 - again, they can set their prices however they want, but a big red flag of profiteering flies when I see this, and it is not something I am eager to support.

Finally, they have a number of ones that they say are retired -- and I just don't think that is the case (maybe I am not in the know because I am not a retailer - but I haven't seen any official announcements on these being retired -- again, this sends up a red flag of dishonesty ----- although, maybe I am wrong)
