Default How to make symbols on a Mac

Sometimes, when typing, you have a need to use extra symbols that are not found on the standard keyboard. Maybe you're typing in a foreign language, of you are trying to write a mathematical sentence. Whatever the reason, some extra symbols can be of use.

Method One
  1. Hold down the alt, or alt and shift keys, and press another key. The key can be a letter, a number, or a symbol. When you do this, a new symbol will appear. There are two lists of symbols below. One list shows symbols that can be created by holding "ALT" and a key, and the other lists symbols that are created with "ALT", "Shift", and a key.
Symbols With the "ALT" Key Pressed
  • ALT and ` = `
  • ALT and 1 = ¡
  • ALT and 2 = ™
  • ALT and 3 = £
  • ALT and 4 = ¢
  • ALT and 5 = ∞
  • ALT and 6 = §
  • ALT and 7 = ¶
  • ALT and 8 = •
  • ALT and 9 = ª
  • ALT and 0 = º
  • ALT and - = –
  • ALT and = = ≠
  • ALT and q = œ
  • ALT and w = ∑
  • ALT and e = ´
  • ALT and r = ®
  • ALT and t = †
  • ALT and y = ¥
  • ALT and u = ¨
  • ALT and i = ˆ
  • ALT and o = ø
  • ALT and p = π
  • ALT and [ = “
  • ALT and ] = ‘
  • ALT and \ = «
  • ALT and a = å
  • ALT and s = ß
  • ALT and d = ∂
  • ALT and f = ƒ
  • ALT and g = ©
  • ALT and h = ˙
  • ALT and j = ∆
  • ALT and k = ˚
  • ALT and l = ¬
  • ALT and ; = …
  • ALT and ' = æ
  • ALT and z = Ω
  • ALT and x = ≈
  • ALT and c = ç
  • ALT and v = √
  • ALT and b = ∫
  • ALT and n = ˜
  • ALT and m = µ
  • ALT and , = ≤
  • ALT and . = ≥
  • ALT and / = ÷
Symbols With the "ALT" and "Shift" Keys Pressed
  • ALT, Shift, and ` = `
  • ALT, Shift, and 1 = ⁄
  • ALT, Shift, and 2 = €
  • ALT, Shift, and 3 = ‹
  • ALT, Shift, and 4 = ›
  • ALT, Shift, and 5 = fi
  • ALT, Shift, and 6 = fl
  • ALT, Shift, and 7 = ‡
  • ALT, Shift, and 8 = °
  • ALT, Shift, and 9 = ·
  • ALT, Shift, and 0 = ‚
  • ALT, Shift, and - = —
  • ALT, Shift, and = = ±
  • ALT, Shift, and q = Œ
  • ALT, Shift, and w = „
  • ALT, Shift, and e = ´
  • ALT, Shift, and r = ‰
  • ALT, Shift, and t = ˇ
  • ALT, Shift, and y = Á
  • ALT, Shift, and u = ¨
  • ALT, Shift, and i = ˆ
  • ALT, Shift, and o = Ø
  • ALT, Shift, and p = ∏
  • ALT, Shift, and [ = ”
  • ALT, Shift, and ] = ’
  • ALT, Shift, and \ = »
  • ALT, Shift, and a = Å
  • ALT, Shift, and s = Í
  • ALT, Shift, and d = Î
  • ALT, Shift, and f = Ï
  • ALT, Shift, and g = ˝
  • ALT, Shift, and h = Ó
  • ALT, Shift, and j = Ô
  • ALT, Shift, and k = 
  • ALT, Shift, and l = Ò
  • ALT, Shift, and ; = Ú
  • ALT, Shift, and ' = Æ
  • ALT, Shift, and z = ¸
  • ALT, Shift, and x = ˛
  • ALT, Shift, and c = Ç
  • ALT, Shift, and v = ◊
  • ALT, Shift, and b = ı
  • ALT, Shift, and n = ˜
  • ALT, Shift, and m = Â
  • ALT, Shift, and , = ¯
  • ALT, Shift, and . = ˘
  • ALT, Shift, and / = ¿

Method Two
  1. Go to System Preferences.
  2. Select "International". That is the fourth icon over in the row marked "Personal".
  3. When you get to the "International" page, select the tab that says "Input Menu".
  4. Look for "Character Palette" in the menu that appears. When you find it, click the checkbox next to it, but do not un-check the box next to your native language.
  5. Quit System Preferences.
  6. To use the character palette, open a text document (AppleWorks, TextEdit... or even some internet browsers work).
  7. Look for a new icon in the menu bar at the top. It should be the last one in the row, and will look like the icon you saw next to "Character Palette" in System Preferences.
  8. When you are ready to insert a symbol, click on the icon, and choose "Show Character Palette".
  9. Select a category from the menu on the left.
  10. From the list on the right, click on a symbol, and then click "insert".
  11. When you're done adding symbols, click the little red button in the upper left corner of the Character Palette.

Tips
  • If you can't even see the symbols in the list, chances are you will not be able to use them.
  • These symbols are very useful for writing mathematical sentences.

Warnings
  • Do not get in the habit of using these too much, because PC users can't see most of them.

Thank You for reading this guide ! Also, thank you to Wikihow because thats where i got this from and that's where i learned this.
