Cache - What it is, why is it there, and when you need to clear it.
As my teacher would say...let's start off with a definition.
cache (pronounced cash) - a hidden storage space for anything, whether it be money, valuables, or...well...web pages and flash documents.
So for WI and WebkinzWorld purposes, cache is a hidden storage system of web pages and documents.
The following all deals with electronic cache, which is what your web browser uses.
Why is "cache" there? So that after you load a big page or document, such as Webkinz World, your computer will remember and keep a temporary copy of what it is like, so that it can load quicker the next time you use it.
Sometimes this is good, like when you have to load a huge website/game that will never change...
but it is bad when you need to load something that changes often and must have the changes included (like a news site's breaking news page).
When do I clear cache? As said in the above answer, when you need to keep a refreshed copy of something...
for example, WebkinzWorld after you win a game that says "You have won a trophy", but do not see a trophy in your dock.
That is most likely because WebkinzWorld has not updated in your browser, which can be solved by simply logging out, clearing cache, and logging in again.
Another case scenario is a thread in WI (I know that there are scripts to prevent using a cached version of forums, but some browsers, including IE6 do not have it.)
When you open a thread for the first time, you will see all the posts there.
But if you open it later, after a person posts, you may not see a new post because your browser is using a "cached" version of the thread.
How do I clear my cache?
This is actually pretty simple.
For Firefox 2.1 and later, all you need to do it go into Tools, click "Clear Private Data", make sure "Cache" is checked, and click "Clear Private Data".
For Internet Explorer 7 and later, go to Tools, Internet Options, under "Browsing History", click "Delete..." and make sure "Temporary Internet Files" is checked. Then, click "Delete"
For Safari, click "Safari", and "Empty Cache".
But, there is a better and more efficient way than doing this manually...making it automatic upon closing the browser.
To do this in Firefox, go to Tools, Options, Privacy, under "Private Data", click "Always clear my private data when I leave Firefox", then click "Settings...", and make sure "Cache" is selected.
For Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Options, and select "Delete Browsing History on exit".
I hope this helps, and for easier reference, I will add Pictures soon
