You know how tey say the internet is a dangerous place? It really is, when your personal information is revelaed online. Thats why you should always be safe and not sorry. Personal information is labeled personal because it belongs to you, and you alone. It should not be given out over the internet, because technology can expose you.

Although nothing is quite "safe", some things you can share online are more unsafe than others. Some information and material on you may be be appropriate for sharing online. However there are levels of risks to the private information you choose to share and expose to the world. If you are a child or a teen, your parents set the rules on this case. Some parental units may allow giving out your gender, and only your gender. Some parents may allow you to give out your name and gender. Others may make a desicison on not letting you share any information at all because of internet safety. It also depends on your age and responsibility. Webkinz Insider does allow you to say your gender, first name, and the state or province you live it, nothing further. Below is a list of personal information that can be given out and how safe or unsafe it is to be given out.
Gender ; Low risk. There are billions of boys and girls in the world so giving out your gender is somewhat safe. Talk to your parents about their barriers of you telling your gender.

Name ; Low/Medium Risk. This is allowed to be given out on Webkinz Insider because this is a secure, safe, and supervised website. However, the risk of safety from giving out your name on a website that isnt safe and secure may take a higher and more unsafe risk.
State ; Low/Medium Risk. This is also allowed on webkinz insider because it is a safe, secure, and supervised website. However, sharing the state you live in on other websites that are insecure may be more unsafe.
City ; Medium risk. This narrows down the topic of where you live and can be unsafe to place on the internet.
Email ; Medium risk. If you are running an internet buisness then it is appropriate to list your email online for customer service and contact. Although this is true, an email adress is a way to contact you and can be unsafe under certain conditions for sharing.
Full Name ; High Risk. You should never, ever give out or list your full name for people to see online. If you have a facebook etc and share your full name, be sure to make your page private.
Age ; High Risk. This should never, ever be given out online for people to see. Please always keep this personal and to yourself.
Adress ; High Risk. This is one of the most risky and unsafe things to expose on the internet becasue, one, it shows where you live and two, it is exposed to the world online so someone may be able to watch you closely.
Phone Number ; High Risk. This is an instant way to reach you and can be unsafe for others to have, especially if ou dont know them.

Its always best to be sure that you are always safe while using the internet. There is a saying that goes for this, Be SAFE, NOT SORRY. Only share things only that you, your parents, or other guardians may feel is appropriate and safe for you to be sharing. Situation Two ; You are on an online chatroom when a complete stranger approaches you. "So, how old are you?" The stranger says. I am a 50 year old girl, I would love to be friends. If we are the same age we can exchange adresses and emails and be pen pals. So how old are you?" The stranger presses. "I am 50, too," you say truthfully.
Situation Three ; You are typing a thread. "Hi everyone! I need some advice. I live in Helena, Montana and the winters here are so cold. Does anyone have some tips on staying warm during these terriblly cold winters here? Thank you!"

Situation One ; Safe. This information is less revealing and is at very low risk for being unsafe. Although putting this information out there isnt very hurtful, its yours and your parents desicion if you should be exposing this or not.
Situation Two ; Very unsafe. this can be an internet predator. You never know who is really on the other line of the chatroom. Never, ever say your age online to people who you dont know. Its very unsafe to do so.
Situation Three ; Unsafe. You are sharing the city you live in, which narrows down the location you are in. Just to be sure, dont reveal what city you live in. If you must share where you live, The furthest you should share is the state.

To be safe online, Talk to an adult before you share anything. There are many reasons and benefits from talking to a parent or trusted adult. One, is that they set all the final rules and boundaries for you. You can end up into deep trouble if an adult thinks you arent being safe online or they see you are breaking their internet rules. Two, is that Adults have much life experience and have an idea of what is and isnt good for you to be putting out there. Listening to their opinions and rules can be a strong guide for you to be safe on the internet.

There are some online websites that ask for personal information and can show it, too. While using these websites, always be sure to keep your page private, dont answer friend requests from people you dont know, and keep all material, photos, etc private.

Dont Start ; Dont start any unsafe online activities. Stay away from any innapropriate activities and never threaten or bully someone online. This is unsafe for you and the victim and will only cause trouble.
