There’s so much to move over and while a lot of it may be derivative, it still takes work, time and money.
It’s like this site. While in its heyday, it may have been more profitable to continue updating. Now, it’s membership is so low that it barely is enough to keep the site running, but the owner does keep updating the license. It’s not about being selfish or greedy, it’s a business and when you get a poor return on your investment why would you continue to beat a dead horse?
Obviously, Ganz sees some profit in this or they wouldn’t continue to try and move into a future with Webkinz. I’m going to be patient and watch what happens. I recall the early days of Webkinz when there wasn’t a lot to do and it got better.
Let it grow.
You're absolutely right in several aspects. But the one aspect that I can't agree with is "let it grow". It was growing but they've been digging themselves into a deeper & deeper hole. They launched Webkinz X basically off a whim bc nothing worked & the majority of things still don't. They're slowly fixing things & I swear I saw a snail pass them several miles back. I know things take time to fix, work out, & etc but it's been well over 2 years (3 come next July) & still nothing is done. It doesn't even seem like they've made a dent into it yet. To me, they've had plenty of time.

It’s likely that the average user won’t even realize there’s a difference between HTML 5 and Flash – and that’s exactly how developers want it. It's not like everything will come to a crashing halt and all the game sites and web sites will have to end. Just like when Java changed, just like when IE or Chrome put out new versions overnight and didn't tell anyone, everyone from AOL to Walmart to Discover Channel had to redo their entire sites to make them work. But it is done. You just have to have good programmers, and you have to plan ahead,. Something Ganz doesn't seem to bother with.

They pulled Webkinz X on the members as a bad business decision and promised they'd fix the carnage "in a few months" and it's still broken after 2 1/2 years. They still sell pets whose Pet Items don't work, eStore items are still sold that are broken and wallpapers, flooring, Pet of the Month items still are available that don't work. Holiday items still don't work.

When Mazing Hamsters was retired, people were told it was because Unity Player wasn't around anymore. Go ahead and Google 'Unity Player'. Most of the awesome, massive, incredible games out there are made using Unity Player. The problem with MH was it was built on a 9 year old version of Unity Player and never updated, so the game stopped working. It wasn't the player, it was Ganz not doing the work to update the game. It was offered to them that it would be updated, for free, and they wouldn't do accept the offer. They closed the game even though people had bought hamsters and had a lot of moolah sitting that they didn't even have the opportunity to spend on the prizes in MH that they'd played to earn.

Flash has little to do with it. There are tons of game sites out there and many you will still be playing on your laptop or desktop. Ganz just doesn't want to bother. What bothers me is all the actual money people, including myself, have put into our accounts and how Ganz continues to push and push for this pay to play and buy buy buy mentality. Yet once again, more will be taken away and I for one don't have the eyesight to play on a mobile device. I have a disabled nephew who can't use mobile devices. We still have tons of things from Webkinz X that are broken that we are waiting to be fixed, and even before that promise is fulfilled Ganz is going to further break the game and take more away?

One of the tricks in the industry is to keep whittling away at the membership until you don't have a lot left, then close the game by saying you don't have enough players left to justify keeping the game going. Those of us who paid for Deluxe, paid for all the features that will no longer be there or be seen or be usable - do we get refunds?
I 100% agree with you. You've hit the nail on the head with basically everything & essentially summed it all up. I'm still sad that Mazin' Hamsters was closed down, I still want to play it from time to time but realize I can't ;-; which is quite depressing. To me, it doesn't seem like Ganz wants to take the time, money, resources, & etc to fix what they already have, but instead wanting to create new things that in turn create new problems, glitches, & etc. It also seems they're getting desperate for money or something bc everything is slowly becoming Deluxe only. Which is causing many players to turn away bc they don't want to put their money towards a game (which at times is totally understandable) when it was perfectly fine the way it was about a year or so ago. I don't know, maybe it's just me.

Today is the exact 10-year anniversary of the day I joined Webkinz and it is disappointing to hear of this change. I hope Ganz can make the new experience on the downloadable app as similar as possible to the one on the regular site, but I'm not sure if that can happen. Hopefully, all data (pets, items, etc.) on an account can be saved and the app can retain all the features while keeping them at the same quality. Unfortunately, there is not much Ganz could have done about Adobe discontinuing the Flash Player and in my opinion, Webkinz's best days are already far behind it. We'll see what the future holds for the site that was a big part of my childhood and is still, to a degree, a pastime for me now.

Remember the Christmas we broke WW when a zillion new people got pets and opened accounts? Boy those were exciting times. I am ever hopeful that the game will continue. I'll download the app immediately when it is released.

I miss my hamsters. But I understand Ganz not putting money into something if they knew Flash would become obsolete and they needed to do other things to get ready for the change and just stopped staying current on things.

Still heartbroken re the loss of TTF and don't want to lose WW too. I am not ready to jump ship. I want to be here when it changes and see if it gets better.

Problem is you are still basing all of what you know on what you are experiencing on a dying flash driven platform. Yes, it has been slow, but it usually is until they have a better idea of where they are going, but these things build momentum as they grow and flourish. Once they aren't caught between both worlds fighting the new and the old simultaneously things will move at a much quicker pace.

You're so worried about the site shutting down and being left holding onto useless plush and empty points. They would have found a way to reduce the amount of access and they wouldn't be continuing to create new themes, new pets, new PLUSH, constantly creating new incentives and videos, blogs and podcasts... this is a LOT of work for something that is going to 'inevitably' shut down, don't you think?

Default Re: The future of webkinz

guess I will be downloading the app on my computer and android.

sort of trying to get ready for the change. like, right now I am using all of my pachinko seeds.
trying to guess what will be eliminated in the move.

anyone have any ideas as to what you think will not be carried over?

I tried to look into any Adventure Park quests that I may have. Tried but it would not load and locked up WW (on IE). Maybe this part will not be carried over so will try to finish whatever I have. On one account I have a Adventure pack I haven't opened.

wonder if Magic Mire will be brought over? seems they have been fiddling with that area.

Default Re: The future of webkinz

I have not been on Webkinz (or WI for that matter), for a while now. I logged in today to find this thread and was extremely saddened and disappointed to hear this news. Ganz's previous decision to change their membership structure to force its users to pay an additional fee to access the site (in the form of the Deluxe membership) was a big reason that I began to spend less money on the site.

I think that it's telling that Ganz has given no indication that they plan to switch the site over to HTML5. Even if they aren't making as much profit as they used to, they should still have capable programmers on their team who can work to make this switch, or at least hire another company to do the work for them. With many sites also needing to make this change, this service should be readily available. To me, I think this means that Ganz is not looking to continue Webkinz in its current form, as an online game, and is looking to transition over to mobile gaming with their app. What is concerning to me is not knowing what is going to be in this app. Will it be free to use? Will there be a substantial barrier to access? What features from the online game will carry over? I know this app is 2 years away, but I think a lot of users would be comforted to know from Ganz what their plans are.

I realize that Webkinz is still being updated. As Dixiecup pointed out, Ganz is still releasing new plushies, podcasts, etc., but companies can be doing completely fine and suddenly close. Podcasts, blogs, and videos are relatively cheap and easy to produce when compared to revamping site content, recoding the website, fixing bugs, etc.. Most new Webkinz are virtual only, with few regular plushies. As Ganz makes a lot of regular plush toys, I don't think it would be a large cost for them to produce a couple a month without having to worry about selling to major retailers like they used to. Moving over to an app and cutting on Webkinz's features would be a really easy way for Ganz to significantly reduce costs, and if the app does not perform well, close altogether.

I really hope that I am wrong, but with the way that Ganz has been treating Webkinz, I just can't be optimistic.

Default Re: The future of webkinz

tiffc, it might just be possible that they are focusing on the path of less resistance. I would think that HTML5 is a much more massive endeavor, even if arguably a more efficient cross-platform. But the stinger on this is that the HTML5 can't be used for animation or interactivity, so it's more useful as a video, audio streaming than it is for game play.

Default Re: The future of webkinz

Hmm, I did not know that about HTML5, thanks for letting me know. In that case, it would be nearly impossible for Webkinz to be transferred over seeing as so much of the site relies on interactivity and animation. Moving over to an app seems like the next best alternative - although I do wonder if it is at all possible to create their own desktop app similar to Roblox or Minecraft? I am not a programmer though.

I still wish Ganz would give us more information about what's going to be on the app. Maybe they're not sure themselves, but it would be nice to know which features they plan to carry over and which ones they are going to discard, or at least what the app would look like.

Well for now that's all there is to base it off of, nothing else so.

Well, that is always the fear when something like this is said so it's a pretty common reaction. Well some companies do all that & then inevitably shut down anyways so it's always a possibility no matter what.
