Different checkpoint times, 23, 28, 30, 31s

Has anyone figured out why you get different checkpoint times? I have seen +23, +28, +30 and +31. It doesn't seem related to:

• The amount of time you have left when you cross the finish line
• The number of coins you collect
• Gold coins collected or not
• The number of obstacles hit

Any ideas?

I was wondering if it was the number of "slow down" spots hit (i.e. grass, dirt patches, edge of track).
