How do you use bonus chips?

I am in the middle of my game and I have 1 bonus chip what do I do with it?

you don't use the bonus chips, the more you have supposedly the better chance you have at a trophy

The bonus chips just improve your odds of winning a trophy IF you finish the game. If you don't finish level 12, they do nothing for you.
