Here is the exact pattern of the pizza's through level 9

L1 - Play don't skip it

L2 - All pizzas will be 1/4 pizza (upgrade shoes)

L3 - 1/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/4, 1/2, 1/4 (no upgrade save money)

L4 - 1/4, 1/4, 1/4, 1/2, 1/2, 1/4, 1/4 (upgrade to another topper maker)

L5 - 1/2, 1/4, 1/2, 1/2, 1/4, 1/4, 1/2, 1/4 (upgrade to another dough maker)

L6 - 1/2, 1/4, 1/2, W, 1/4, 1/4, 1/2, 1/4 (no upgrade save money)

L7 - 1/4, 1/4, 1/2, 1/4, W, 1/4, 1/4, 1/4, 1/2, 1/2 (upgrade to another oven)

L8 - W, 1/4, 1/2, 1/4, W, 1/4, 1/4, 1/2, 1/2, 1/4, 1/4 (upgrade to another topper)

I have since started to upgrade my shoes last, rather I have just upgrade the topper and/or the dough maker.

Yes the beginning example helps with the money later down the line to get the upgrades you need.

That is how I have been doing my upgrades as well but I never seem to be quick enough to get past level 9. I definitely agree that you need the 2nd pizza maker by level 8 to deal with the 2 whole pizzas and then on level 9 to accommodate the 3 whole pizzas, just wish i could get through that dang level.

There's also a set pattern as to how many toppings a pizza has. Just thought I'd let you know. (The toppings themselves are random, though.)
