When you go to the island your pet gets a boost in their HHH levels. Before you go to the boat, switch pets to a pet that hasn't gotten that boost yet. If you see the ghost, and your pet's happiness goes to zero, leave the island and come back with the sad pet. He'll get a boost up to 15. It might not seem like much, but it's a good way to get a jump away from zero RIGHT AWAY. I do that every time.
After that play your favorite game for awhile and your happiness will go up and up. I like to play Get Eleven Solitaire, and I get a boost of 5 or 6 points each game, or more if I get past level one in the game. Soon I've got full happiness, and some extra Kinz Cash!
