Now it doesn't always automaticallly make them a good move so I think it's worth doing. If they don't zap, I tend not to zap either, unless I'm down and it will buy me time in the game to come back.
I will sometimes do a pre-emptive zap early in the game, in an opening move, but usually only if it gets me some atoms.
I do know people who think it is always mean to zap.
For strategy, I see a lot of players who take a fast move. I like to wait to see what Goober suggests. It isn't always the best move (sometimes I think of it as the 2nd best move). Sometimes there will be a 4 right there and Goober will suggest something else. However if I am undecided, a Goober rec. can push me to make a move. Sometimes the Goober rec. sets the other player up for something good so I do try to work that out.
I don't try and drag a game out for KC.
Also I use nicknames to keep myself clear on what I'm looking for at the end. For ex, if I still need red and green, I think "Xmas." Otherwise I get a little too caught up in the best move and not what I need. The Goober rec.s are worth less later in the game b/c he doesn't keep track of what you need. (He'll show you the Michigan move when you need Xmas.)
If you are in the lead, you might want to take moves from the top of the board so that things don't change much. If you are behind, you might want to take them from the bottom to shake them up more. Also sometimes when the other player is very chatty (Go Science!), it can be distracting.
