Let's see if this is any clearer... (it may not be )

Each time a pet graduates, subtract the level number from the number of classes needed to pass that level. That's how many classes are left for the next pet.

So subtract 1 class from level 1
subtract 2 classes from level 2
subtract 3 classes from level 3...

-That's how the level reduction works. This happens each time a pet graduates the Academy until four pets have graduated. If a fifth pet graduates there are no additional reductions (but by that point, so many classes have been subtracted that all remaining pets should be able to graduate the Academy in less than two months )

Actually, neither the Cooking or Grooming are needed to enter the stadium competitions. The Pro Cooking requires the pet to be through Level 5 Creativity and the Pro Beauty Pageants require the pet to be through Level 5 Fashion. Other than those requirements, it's thought to be pretty much random as to how pets place in both the Open and Pro competitions.
