how do you win in the cooking competition?

I still can't figure out how to win in competitions. Today for the fun of it I entered two pets plus several pets from the kids I babysits accounts. One kid has done all the trials in the academy but very few of the paid classes and he got 151st place, while one of mine is on level three of creativity and done many other classes and got 170th place. So if it is our performance in the classes we do how did he beat me. It seems to random

Completely random sadly.

It's definitely random for the open competitions; but for the pro competitions, you need to be on at least level 5 of Style for the beauty pageants and Creativity for the cooking. I also found that once I got 2 pets past level 5 of each, I won some trophies. Good luck

So it really is completely random? I thought it had to do w/the leve of classes you were in at the Kinzville academy. Right now I am on level 6 in everything and level 7 in strength. I am still only placing sever hundred spots back (whether in the beauty or cooking competitions). I am just taking classes and figured I had to finish all 10 levels in each category and that there were just that many people ahead of me. But if I hear you right, all the classes I am taking are not helping, correct? If that is true, then why do they keep sending me letters saying "if you want to improve your pets ranking, then take classes at the Kinzville Academy? Help--anyone?
