[PICS] I decided to do some number crunching today, so I entered all of the data from this thread into a spreadsheet. The data set is still a little limited, but it looks to me like it does not matter what constellation you click on or what star. As far as I can tell you can get ANY star by clinking on ANY constellation. What I did find is that there is a clear ranking of stars, similar to the Gem Hunt. I tabulated the offers everyone has received for each of the stars and looked for the most common value for each. I then checked and made sure that all other values were an "even" discount from this base value. It turns out that Alyssa is really fickle. She can give you anywhere from 10% of the base value to double the base value. Here are the values for each star, including her average price, sorted by star type: Star------------Base Price-------Average Price Lunamite------------450---------------417 Marrowmile----------250---------------220 Blushing Bulb-------200---------------199 Chlorocosmo----------75----------------70 Nightnote------------75----------------67 Skyprint-------------75----------------67 Twighlight Twinkle---75----------------65 Frost Flake---------400---------------377 Magmamite-----------200---------------188 Deelight------------150---------------137 Moon Bloom-----------60----------------55 Nocturnite-----------60----------------53 Divinadime-----------60----------------51 Fluoraflite----------60----------------50 Webwonder-----------350---------------310 Illustrolite--------150---------------125 Lightening Lantern--100----------------96 Enchantrite----------50----------------50 Pyro Pearl-----------50----------------46 Spectaculight--------50----------------46 Zinglow--------------50----------------45 As you can see, Alyssa's average offer is actually less than the base price. At least now you'll be able to tell if you are getting a good price or not. As it stands 5.6% of the time you find a star it will be one of the three rares: Lunamite, Frost Flake, or Webwonder. The Lunamite has an edge right now, but the data set isn't large enough for that to mean anything. 24.2% of the stars you find will be the uncommons: Marrowmile, Blushing Bulb, Magmamite, Deelight, Illustrolite, or Lightening Lantern. The other 70.2% of the time you will get one of the others. I only examined the whole top/bottom thing based on the first page update, but it shows no evidence that where you click affects the outcome. Everything to me appears to be completely random. We have some shortages (Enchantrite and Chlorocosmo) but these are easily explained by our limited data set. My Excel (c) spreadsheet is quite large, but for those of you who want a better looking summary here you go: Star Challenge Summary.xls I'm confident in the base values. As far as the complete randomness, it's just my gut feeling. We need a lot more data to say for sure. Here's a sheet with a summary of how many of each star have been found in each constellation: Star Challenge Locations.xls Happy Hunting! | | | 08-27-2008, 12:15 AM | #596 | I'm a Lazy Zum Gift Guru Join Date: Sep 2007 Posts: 8,071 | Re: ALYSSA's STAR CHALLENGE = Collaborate with WI members to map the Sky & Comets!
