Jeff gasped as the wind was knocked out of him

or

Jeff darted out of the way quickly, barely avoiding the leap.

then you can continue with the fight, some hits working and some not. Fighting is one of the hardest things not to power play or god mod, so I don't expect you to get it right away, just try and listen )
