Renae fingered the ring that hung on a chain around her neck. I propped myself on my knees, listening carefully for the slight sound of the diamond and emerald studs brushing against the thin chain.

I sat wearily on the edge of a suitcase, balancing precariously as I lifted both feet up off the carpet. The shoes I wore were three sizes too large and hung off my toes like lead weights. I bit down on my lip and spun on the suitcase so I wasn’t facing the sleeping professor anymore. The buttons on my pants scraped against the taught leather base of the suitcase and as I looked back to see if the man was still sleeping, I found myself choked up in fear. What if I was caught in here? Would I be sent back home? Would it all have been for nothing?
I breathed. The man’s jaw was slack as he snored, his shoulders rising and falling in time with his beating heart.
I blinked and raised my hand so the sound of his pumping veins were magnified: the soft thud like thunder in my ears. I listened for a moment and lowered my wrist. The beating was replaced with soft snoring once more.

All around me was darkness. No light would have been let in had there not been a streak of shimmering gold expelled from my robe’s left sleeve. I looked away from it and rested my head on my knees, well aware of everything outside and around the compartment.
The creaks and clunks as the trolley cart managed from sleek wood floors to thick decorated carpet.
The strokes and glints as chandelier crystal brushed against each other, making the sound of whispering pixies.
The grunt and steam let off from the wheezing train, the burning of fiery coals and the cries as the black smoke was expulsed and left behind.
I paused for a moment and pulled my robe’s sleeve tighter on my arm. The glow was muffled, most of the light now blocked by the stroke of thick velvet.
I considered everything around me and came the same conclusion that was written in gold on my arm: Things Are Not Always As They Appear.
