"Lucky! I've always wanted to go to New York City! I hear it's amazing!" smiled Katie.

I shrugged. "I wouldn't know. The only thing I can remember is a blur of lights."

Without another word, I turned to walk along the carpet of needles, deeper into the gloomy place. I shivered slightly.

I followed him slowly, enjoying the shielding darkness.

It was getting a little darker with each step. But the dark was green, and sort of welcoming. THe trees were starting to thin at this point, and I walked a little faster.

In contrast, I walked slower as the forest became lighter, prolonging the time spent in the darkness.

As a result of Jayne's slow walking, I was the first to arrive in the clearing. I looked around silently, slightly reluctant to leave the trees. It seemed like the kind of place that didn't want to be disturbed.

I stood on the fringe of the trees, taking in the clearing. It looked like a good place to go when I wanted to be alone, secluded and not too exposed.
