"Sophie?" I laughed again. "What a strange name. Of course, what do I expect? You don't come from here, and you're not a dragon."

I laughed, too. "The no-feathers named me. And I should say something about you! Your names sound almost ordinary. I was expecting something more... draconian, I guess."

I nodded. "Echoes was named by a human, and I named myself from words I heard from them. Who are these 'no-feathers' of which you speak?"

"I think it's that thing you're talking about, humans. They walk on funny shaped feet, they don't have feathers or scales or fur, and they're really tall... well, compared to me..."

"That's the ones."

Folded? I asked in my silent way, Why are you socializing with a chicken? It's... embarrassing.

I wandered off, trying to find something to do. I noticed Folded and Echoes... and was that a chicken? I walked up to them. "Hi," I said meekly.

Geez, another dragon, I thought. And more of that accent. Really must get used to that. "Hi! I'm Sophie. And you are..?"

"Icefire. Nice to meet you, Sophie." My gaze shifted to Echoes' front foot. "Oh look," I murmured with a dead tone in my voice, "Your claws. They're growing in. You'll mature soon," I noted sadly.

I glanced down to look at my claw. Indeed, it was growing in. Wow, it is, I gestured. I've been waiting ages for this day. I looked back up and met Icefire's frozen sapphire gaze. I noticed icy tears welling up, and knew why. How I wish I could trade with you... I motioned, even though I knew she couldn't understand. I'd rather stay this way forever...

"Echoes," I said sternly. "Is something... wrong? You don't normally act like this..."

I turned away, wincing. No. Nothing at all.

"Icefire, Sophie," I started. "I don't want you here when this happens. Icefire, go back to that dark green dragon you stay with. Sophie... well, I don't care where you go. Just leave, please. Hurry."

I nodded, and ran away from the dragons.

I walked slowly away from the rest of them, back to Venus' grove. It took an hour, but I made it. "Hi Venus," I murmured sadly.

Icefire seemed different... almost dead. "Hi. Something got you down?" I picked her up gently and sat her in the large flower neatly positioned on my back.

I nodded. "Venus, what did it feel like when you grew up?"

"Terrible," I admitted. "I didn't want to grow. I wanted to stay small and harmless. But after I got over the shock, it was okay." I paused. "Why do you ask?"

"Because that Echoes is," I replied. "I saw her claws growing."

I knew I should be mad at her for being with the vampire dragon, but I took on pity instead of anger. "Oh, is that it? Sad because you're frozen?"

I shrugged. "I guess... but there was... something else. Echoes can't talk. She speaks with her body. And when she was doing it... oh, I'm not sure, but something in the back of my head seemed to be... buzzing..." I deliberately left out that our eyes were locked, but did that mean something?

Shadowpulse heared commotion. he and his brother flew over to see who it was.

Riel and his brother went too.

I ran around, clucking like mad. "WHERE AM I?" I seriously had no idea. "Where are other dragons? Other birds? Someone I can talk to! GAH!" I tripped over a rock. "Stupid Sophie, Stupid, stupid, stupid!" I moaned.

I flew to see....a chicken? What is a chicken doing here? "Why are you here?" I asked.

"Huh? Hello? Hello-o?" I called. I thought I heard wingbeats, but I'd been hallucinating ever since I got here.

I walked up behind some bushes and repeated. "Why are you here?? Thats all I want to know. and also your name."

[cattails190]

"I'm here," I started, "because the stupid no-feathers, which you dragons apparently call humans, left me here. And I'm Sophie."

[sealo]

"Oh! I am Riel. Want me to show you around? there is lots to show y--" We were stopped by an alternate black dragon.
