There are some fantastic tips here.

My tip: avoid the clichés. Clever, handsome, brave, "bad" heroes and kind, beautiful, loved-by-everybody princesses are examples of overused personalities. Get original, be unique, and make that character shine.
If you think your character is a little too perfect, you can always take the Mary Sue Litmus Test, which is a test that will determine if your character is a Mary Sue (a perfect character) or not.

A unique character is a memorable one.

I don't roleplay much, but when I make characters (rarely), I base their personality after their star sign.

Google 'star sign meanings'. It's rather interesting.

Example- With one of the characters I'm working on now, she is shy, so I made her a Pisces.

Here are my tips:

1: Sometimes I think its really fun to make the power of the character, the name, or appearance the complete opposite of their personality. XD Such as a very bright happy girl, with the power to control the dead or something.

2: I find it more fun to RP with someone completely different then yourself, and with faults.

3: I think it helps to listen to music when making a characters powers, I don't know why though.

That's all I have for now. XD
