I'm getting right into my story right now. I'm starting Chapter Two! Night Chapter One: Amy
It all started three years ago, on the day that Ms. Adymson introduced Gwendolyn Stewart to the fifth grade class. I had thought nothing of it. She would be just another girl to laugh at my slightly too small (not to mention geekish) Gap overalls, my glasses or my bookish nature. So it gave me quite a shock when she sat down beside me in homeroom.
"Hi, what's your name?" she asked with a small smile. I stared at her with my jaw dropping.
"Uh..." I paused, dumbstruck. When I realized that she actually expected me answer, I continued, "Amy. Amy Ramirz."
"Cool. I'm Gwen." She emphasized the last word a lot, making sure I would never have the nerve to call her Gwendolyn. She obviously hated that name. But what was much more interesting to me was the first word in her sentence. 'Cool.' No one had ever said such a thing to me before. I was, to be blunt, a nerd. A geek. A nobody. Even more surprising was her easy willingness to talk to me. I'd never known any one of my classmates to say more than a few words to me at a stretch. But Gwen was different than the rest of them, but I didn't find out just how different until quite later.
Gwen chattered on, a smile crossing her face occasionally. Deep in my thoughts, I stared blankly at her until she asked me a question.
"Er... uh... what?"
"I asked whether you like Ms. Adymson or not?" she said calmly.
"She's okay... to me..." I shrugged.
Gwen giggled. "What's that supposed to mean, silly?'
"She's nasty if you get in trouble," I shuddered in mock horror.
"Oh... I'll tell you a secret," she lowered her voice confidentially. "I'm liable to get in trouble... quite often."
I raised my eyebrows. "Just don't, okay?"
She touched her pocket softly. "I'll try, don't worry," she looked at me with all seriousness, and then started talking and smiling once again. But her smile started to look fake after a while, her words became icier and icier. Just before lunch was was over, she got up abruptly.
"Meet me at the big apple tree after school. Don't be late." And with those words she disappeared into the surging crowd of students.
I looked for Gwen all afternoon, but she wasn't in any of my other classes apparently. My eyes roved the hals as I got read to leave at the end of the day, but it was just as if she had disappeared into thin air.
She was sitting high in the branches of the apple tree when I arrived, with her knee hugged close to her chest. I didn't even ask how she dared go up so high. Gwen was an intriguing girl.
"Gwen?" I called softly. She looked up, uncurling herself and sprang to the ground from right where she was sitting. I watched her jump and felt quite dizzy; heights had never been my strong point. I'd never be able to jump from that high, but she landed just like a feather.
She studied me for a long moment. "Amy," she looked at me with her eyes burning with an emotion I couldn't name. Like hate and jealousy mixed together, with sadness and annoyance all together. "Amy Ramirz." Still staring, Gwen motioned for me to sit down on the grass. After a few tense moments, she suddenly burst into a volley of unceasing questions.
"First off, have you ever had a dream?"
"Yes but-"
"Have you ever seen things that no one else seems to see?"
"Um... maybe once or twice..."
"What things?" she asked, relentlessly.
"Some sort of beautiful color... No one else notices it. But I know it's real, and I'm starting to see it more and more often now."
"Describe it."
"It's royal like purple, free as blue, pure as white, rich as red and cheerful as yellow. I don't have a name for it-" She cut me off with a wave of her hand.
"It's called iouae." Then Gwen glared at me. Hard. That had shut her up for some reason. Then she touched her pocket nervously again. "Come," she said after a prolonged tense moment, and with that final icicle sharp word, she started off with long easy strides towards the forest. Chapter Two: Gwen
The forest was a tangled mass of trees and broken underbrush, a place of terrible but mystifying beauty. It bordered the edge of town, its looming shadows a seeming menace to the quiet and cheerful place that the small village was. People said there were Things in there, terrible things. Monsters. They kept away from it. That's why I'd hoped Amy wouldn't follow me, but she did anyways, curious to the end. But guess what? Curiosity killed the cat. I slipped into the familiar perpetual twilight that was so welcoming to me. I turned my head, and saw Amy hesitate at the edge of the trees, I looked away and forged ahead, pushing through a pathless mass of undergrowth. But I knew exactly where I was going. I walked on for about ten minutes, and then I stopped, checking to see if Amy was still behind me. She walked up beside me, a little breathless, her eyes wide and frightened.
"We're almost there," I said, a little more gently.
"Good. This place creeps me out," was all that she said. I waited for her to get her breath back, and then stepped into another thicket of trees. It took us quite a while to battle our way through, and when we came out we were scratched and a more than a little blood was on our hands.
When we emerged from the trees, I sighed happily. Finally, we had arrived.
