God forgave me, and on the way home I even got a special greeting by Mr. . He even directed me to pull my car over (how special I must be right?!)……Thank goodness I went to 12 years of Catholic schools and could sing Oh Holy Night in Latin! I think that song on the radio and the offering of one of the bake sale goodies that I just purchased stopped his writing! Okay, so where was I? oh yeah, starting OVER….. Convection is different in each Convection Oven – I LOVE to cook and I sooooooo LOVE my convection! The owner’s manual was my Godsend when it came to learning the Art of Convection, not the convection cookbooks! I do stuff my turkey, but make an additional roaster of sage giblet stuffing. Escape – ANYTHING stir fry is in my top 10, YUM! Unsocl – when I hit that famous “M” word for mature females I couldn’t sleep more than 3 hours a night for almost 3 years! The ONLY positive of insomnia for me was: my best GF + I would meet at the 24 hour Meijer and shop and catch up. After changing my diet, venting my frustrations, etc… - I finally sat down with my Dr. and he prescribed a sleep aid. I take it maybe once a week and am good for each month. All the environmental aside - there is a miserable feeling about missing sleep. I will add you to my prayers this evening so that you may slumber well. Jenifer – Are we neighbors in the forest of trees? LOL I secretly love when I re-gift my leaves to my neighbors overnite! GREAT rocking chair analogy ++++ Mom4 – woot woot for your chips! I have never started before December 1st, might not be a bad idea for me?! We are Christmas + Hanukkah in our home. Fate (& the Law of Murphy?) having it, our 2 oldest (HS) have declared they are Christians and our YDD (Jr H) joins me! It sounds pretty confusing but it so works for us; why fix something that isn’t broken? The entire month of Dec here is a celebration of diversity. Bindi – okay, so the window rumor final is for the ornament collection?! LOL To each of you who mentioned DH July heart attack –THANK YOU! Absolutely NO symptoms for him whatsoever! 53 yrs. young, 6’, 135 lbs. He had an emergency Angioplasty and a stent placed in and is awaiting more healing for multiple bypass in a few months. He has never exercised a day in his life, (me either) so with instructions and a manual we have started to walk a few blocks. Cardiologist review is summed up as: Genetics and NO body fat! "See honey, I told you not to pass on the Frango mints, homemade donuts and homemade ice cream!!!" He really is a comedian and we continue to laugh here - he says that was the last July 4th parade he will ever be in; community member or not! a great night! I had never heard of a turduken until your post back a few days ago. Since then, I saw Paula Dean make one. And when she said that she was going to make one, well I knew what she was talking about. Without you, I would of been in the dark about it.
Paula's birds had the middle bones removed. It looked a lot like large chicken breast with the legs and wings still on. She putting stuffing in between the birds. And then folded the birds up a sewed the turkey up to look like a normal turkey. Is that the way you do your turduken? It sounds like it is very yummy. But oh so much work.

I finished baking my cookies this afternoon and washed all the dishes. Now I am happy to sit at the computer.
Just a comment on sleep. Sometimes I can't sleep, but I just accept that I'm not tired. All the points on caffeine and exercise are right on the money. Reading right before bed is an important part of my routine.
Any body take a nap? I'm just not a nap person, but Mr. Shimmer is. He can take a 15 minute nap and tackle the rest of the day. If I take a nap, I just can't seem to wake up! | | | 11-22-2009, 05:42 PM | #1294 | Webkinz :) Join Date: Aug 2009 Posts: 1,419 | Re: Snow White Trackers Withdrawal Club Hi All,
Please excuse the extensive cutting of the quoted posts...but I knew this would be a long post even without the quotes, so I am cutting heavily to save space. It's very frustrating, so I can't imagine dealing with it on a constant basis. Jenifer put together some wonderful posts with suggestions; I hope at least some of the suggestions will be of help to you. I have other hearing problems, and am due to go to an audiologist again soon. I suspect that I will be using a hearing aid at some point in the next few years. (Most people think I already need one, as I often have to have things repeated, and usually need people to be facing me when they speak so I can lip-read parts that I don't hear.
I'm sorry your husband is also now having problems that interfere with sleep. I have heard of a lot of people having hip pain, and it sounds very uncomfortable and disruptive. Originally Posted by Jenifer36 ..................

OK - I have what I call the Ritual of Bed - ................................ WOW! Thanks for taking the time to share this with us. Unfortunately, I've had battles with insomnia my entire adult life. The truth is, if I was working a night shift job, I don't think I'd have as many problems. I am a night owl by nature, and when the insomnia breaks, it usually happens during the day (after 7am) and then I can easily sleep all day (with my blackout mask ).
1.) Caffeine withdrawal headaches are the pits. I don't drink coffee, and only recently decided to give herbal teas another go (tried it before and all I can say is BLECH!) - and those are caffeine/stimulant free, but I am a serious diet pepsi drinker. Started switching to caffeine free diet pepsi in the evenings. Doesn't seem to have made a difference yet, though.
2.) I have been very bad about getting regular exercise lately. I used to have an awesome treadmill, but I sold it when I bought this house. There was just no way to get it into my basement without dismantling the entire thing. It was a huge professional model that I had saved up to buy, and I LOVED it. OMGosh, it was so great. The area I live in gets ridiculously humid in the summer, has lots of cold and snow from November-April, and then April-May are mud season, so outdoor exercise is (mostly) not an option for me. I'm just a wimp when it comes to dealing with the elements . Thanks for the reminder to get back on the wagon.
3.) You're right, there's a lot of mixed opinion on food/sleep relationship. I find that potatoes make me tired, or toast. Don't know if eating a potato right before bed is all that good for me, though . I have been trying the sleepytime tea. Still undecided if it's helping, but at least it can't be doing any harm.
4.) I prefer it cooler when I sleep. Funny about the feet thing, though. I never really thought about that. I usually stick my feet out of the blankets because I can't stand them warm, but now that you've made me think about it...you know, I usually do wake up at some point with my feet ice cold and I have to pull them under the blankets and warm them up before I can get back to sleep. I'm really bad about keeping a schedule...more on that below, but that's a great suggestion and something I should work on. As for the bed/pillow question. I have to keep my pillow up to date because when it gets out of shape (or if I use the wrong one), I get terrible headaches and neck pain. The mattress, however. Don't even get me started. When my brother broke his back, I let him take my bed and I took the top bunk off my niece's bed. Mine was new and sooo comfy. When he recovered, he kept my bed, and I am still on half a bunk bed. Definitely NOT comfy.
5.) Light is definitely my enemy when it comes to sleep. Last year I put up blackout curtains in my bedroom. But if the door would open or if the sun managed to slip in through a crack in the sides, it would wake me up. So, I invested in one of those blackout sleep masks. Those things are FABULOUS. OMGosh, I cannot sleep without it now, and I take it with me when I travel.
6.) I cannot sleep when it's too quiet. Don't have a sound machine, but I have an ipod on a dock, and I play celtic music (mostly instrumental) on almost the lowest volume, and that helps to relax me a bit. Cannot play popular music with words, though, because then I catch myself straining to listen, which keeps me awake . My favorite sound that relaxes me and helps me sleep, though, is rain. Love it when we have our rainy season. I never thought about it, but a sound machine with different water sounds would probably accomplish the same thing. Hmm...may have to pay BB&B a visit.
7.) Smells? Never gave this a thought. But, you know, when someone in the house is cooking something I find stinky and the odors make their way to the bedroom, it wakes me up. Good idea to be proactive and put some scents in the room that will help me relax. Have to figure out what those scents are now.
8.) One of my cats is not a good bed buddy, as he only crawls into the bed when he wants attention. He'll meow and cry and nudge your hand until you pet him. He has a box (just a cardboard box) that I stuffed with old newspaper and then sealed up. It's solid enough to support him, but had enough give that the top sort of sunk in and made what is best described as a kitty hammock. I put a fabric remnant on the top (one of those very soft, fluffy, shaggy faux fur fabrics) and that's his spot now. It's at the foot of the bed, and he's perfectly content there. My other cat will sleep for a few hours right next to my head/shoulders. I can curl up and rest my arm against her and then we both drift off. If that doesn't work, I know I'm in for a long one.
9.) Stress. Yep, have that. Try to let things just kind of roll off and not let it fester and stress me out, but my living situation is not exactly relaxing. Thinking about it, though, I have been feeling more stressed out and frazzled lately, so I do need to work on this more. Thanks for the reminder. It's funny how we can forget this stuff in the day to day.
10.) Meds...I try not to take medication unless I have to. There are exceptions. I take advil fairly regularly because of a variety of ailments, from headaches to joint pain (too much manual labor in my youth, and not enough exercise recently). Sometimes, when I get desperate for sleep, I will take a full dose of nyquil. That stuff can knock me out but good. Thing is, it also makes me a bit foggy and slow the next day, so I try to save it as a last resort. I did see a doctor about my insomnia. His only recommendation was prescription meds. I am trying to avoid taking any prescriptions regularly until I have an ailment that just requires it. (I have a friend who literally has two gallon size bags filled with prescription bottles, and I want desperately to avoid that fate myself.) He prescribed ambien, and I did try it, but it didn't seem to help, so when the prescription ran out, I never refilled it.
A routine. Yeah, I am very, very bad about keeping a set schedule, and that is probably part of my problem. I'll have to try to sort out a schedule that is workable. The problem for me is, if I am busy at work and start to fall behind, I work late, or will start early, and that throws off the rest of the schedule, and then on it goes.
Again, thank you for taking the time to put this together. Some very good reminders and ideas for me, and there are probably others that will benefit from it, as well. Originally Posted by My Escape ..................

I am so glad you mentioned the select comfort bed. I am planning to upgrade back to a "big girl" bed in the next few months and was thinking about giving that one a try. When I stay at my friends house, it's one of those beds with the huge mattress topper, and that's comfortable (especially compared to my bunk bed!), but it's not quite...right. You know? One bed that I found pretty comfortable was the bed at the Sheraton hotels, and also the one at the Hilton and Hamilton Inn. I also like the adjustability factor that the select comfort bed is supposed to provide. I also try to make the sleeplessness pay off, so I do most of my shopping in the wee hours. Sometimes, if I can't sleep and am getting stir crazy from being inside, I'll go to the 24 hour stores and just wander around, looking at everything and anything. Unfortunately, I only know one other local insomniac, and he works at night, so we can't usually meet up and commiserate over our lack of sleep.
I think it's great that your family celebrates both holidays. Great experience for your kids, and great that you and your husband both have the opportunity to share your traditions. I always mention Christmas, because I was raised celebrating Christmas...it's just what we did. But, really, it's the holiday season in general that I like. It just seems like most people are more kind and thoughtful during the holidays. We take more time to reconnect with those we've maybe been "too busy" to keep up with during the hustle and bustle of the day to day. I guess we could just say it's the "holiday cheer" that I enjoy. Unfortunately, my family isn't all that close, so there's no real atmosphere of family togetherness or anything here, but I do spend the day with my grandmother, and my best friend and I always get together at some point, so that's always nice.
I'm glad your husband is doing well. My grandmother had a quadruple bypass several years ago, and she has been going strong ever since. Too funny about the parade comment. Sounds like your husband has kept his sense of humor, and I always think that's one of the best medicines. It also sounds like the two of you have a great relationship and really have great fun together. No small feat these days. | | | 11-22-2009, 05:52 PM | #1295 | Banned Join Date: Aug 2009 Posts: 15,090 | Re: Snow White Trackers Withdrawal Club Our cats have been behaving pretty good at night. Reading makes my eyes tired, and therefore can make it easier for me to at least lay down, close my eyes and rest (if not sleep).
One thing I have noticed that helps me with the sleep issue:
I do not go to bed until I am ready to sleep (or try to sleep). I read in my living room chair, watch tv sitting in a chair/on a couch, etc. That way, when I hit the pillows, my mind and body will associate that with...ahh, time to SLEEP. (well, that's the plan, anyway). It does seem to help me to separate it like this.
As far as naps...I was never a napper, but I admit that I have hit the point where, if I am tired and can get to sleep, I will sleep. Don't care what time of day it is, I will take sleep when I can get it. I've tried holding off, thinking that if I force myself to stay awake, it'll help me sleep better at bedtime. Doesn't seem to work that way for me, though. Instead, by the time bedtime rolls around, I've hit my second wind and I am UP. What is this? You wrote a book? Tell us about it! I saw that episode, too! It was the first time I had ever heard of turduken, and I've never known anyone who attempted it themselves. It does seem like a lot of work, but what a fantastic presentation. I'm sure Jenifer's guests will be impressed...and well fed.
And yes, I was thinking that too...Escape - if you don't mind, please do tell a bit about your book? I've seen it mentioned a couple of times and was curious, but didn't want to seem nosy. Bindi - your smilies are totally adorable. I never even knew that section of the forum existed, so thanks, Jenifer for posting her link. Doubt she'll be able to, but in case there's a moose sprite available...
Buttrfly - The beauty of that bed is its adjustability. We've all pulled muscles doing something innocuous like tying a shoe or just picking something up. You can adjust the bed to make it harder or softer in seconds to accomodate the soreness. We've had the bed about 7 or 8 years now and I can say that I"ve raised my number to make it a bit harder in that timeframe just from general aging. So our needs often change and its nice to have a bed that changes with us. Our spring mattress used to have pressure points, where my body hit the springs. They were buried, but they were still uncomfortable. I felt like Princess and the Pea. With the air only under me, there's no discomfort. Like I said, it was almost a 180 the first night. BUT it was because I had a lucky guess with my number. I just put it on 50 to start, not having a clue what I really wanted and it turned out my best number was 55. Now it's 60. My husband put his at 80 and hasn't looked back. Going from his side to mine is hilarious if you roll on it. Totally different and explains why neither of us slept well before this. My point is that there is some trial and error. You might put it at 50 the first night, not have the greatest sleep and it might be because you needed it at 35. It's fun to play with the remote, though, so I bet your first night you'd figure it out. It's not cheap, but they do seem to last, we assembled it ourselves to save labor costs (wasn't hard, but you need room to spread the stuff out). I love this bed. And no, I'm not affiliated with them in any way, but they should compensate me for all the people I've sent their way.
The book - I don't have a final word count, I'm still compiling into one document and four chapters left to give the once-over, but it will land at around 450,000 words. It's big. The idea came to me the day I took my youngest to preschool for the first time. The house was quiet - no children tv shows blaring in the background, no one needing my time. The idea popped into my head. I didn't write it down at the time, but instead let it develop in my head real time for about three years. At that point, I had the mother of midlife crisis' and decided I needed to put it down on paper. I've been editing it for years, it's done and will send out the proposal as soon as I get that written, which will be before the end of the year. The story is a romantic fantasy. I have a G rated paragraph written up as a very simple synopsis. Just gives a general overview of the storyline and the main character's struggle. But because this thread has ten times the numbers of lurkers than posters, and I don't know who they are, I don't want to put it on a public forum. If anyone would like to read the paragraph, please PM me. I'll be happy to send it to you that way. I am very proud of it and it's had good feedback with beta readers who have helped me with the occasional grammar or logic issue. It's just whether or not I can get an agent to agree with them. I need to develop a tough skin, I'm in for a very, very difficult journey. Thanks for asking. Originally Posted by Mrs. Shimmer Our cats have been behaving pretty good at night. In the last month, one of my cats has started sleeping on my head. I wouldn't mind, he's my buddy and I love him to death, but he has a very odd purr equivalent to a human snoring, as far as loudness. So until he starts to drift off, it's noisy. No idea where this head sleeping came from.
And no, I cannot take a nap during the day. If I do, I won't sleep at night and it messes me up. Except when I'm sick, then I let my body dictate what I need.
