FAQ SECTION
disclaimer: My Mom helped me put this FAQ section together

1. How did you become Deaf? post 89
I had Menegitis when I was 18 months old. I was very sick and hospitalized for several
weeks. I lost some hearing at first and then lost it all. My mom noticed that I quit talking
and was not scared by loud sounds.
2. How much can you speak? post 52 and 53
I don't. My voice sounds funny to other people. I lost my hearing before I had fully
developed the ability to speak and learn language. I NEVER use my voice--by choice.
3. Can you read lips? post 52 and 53
I do not read lips. Some hearing impaired and Deaf people are good at it. I'm not. Sometimes I think maybe as I get old I will become better at it. For now, I'm not any good at it.
4. Do you use hearing aids?
No. I do not use hearing aids. I have NO measureable hearing...NOTHING. When the audiologist tests my hearing it is so loud that if my Mom is in the booth, she hears it coming out of the head phones that are on MY head!! My hearing test says: No Response at all frequencies tested at the limits of the audiometer (that the machince they use to test hearing).
5. Do you go to a public or private school? post 59
I go to public school with other Deaf and hearing impaired kids.
6. When you think do you hear a voice in your head? post 64
I see pictures. It's kind of like a movie in my head.
7. When you dream do you talk in your dream? post 62
I use sign language in my dreams.
8. Do you enjoy music? post 157
No, not really.
9. How do you wake up in the morning? Know the someone is at the door? Know your phone is ringing? post 115
alarm clock-I have a vibrating thing between my mattress and box spring to wake me up. It's called the Shake-a-wake. Should be called the earthquake-awake!
door bell/phone-I have lights that flash a different light for each: phone and door
10. What is a "hearing" dog? post 157
Hearing Dogs are trained to alert to the sounds: fire/smoke alarm, telephone, door knock, doorbell, oven timer, alarm clock, and name call. In some cases a dog may be trained for the baby cry.
11. How do you answer the phone? Land line
I use a TTY or TDD. Full explaination with photo on post 157
12. What does ASL stand for?
American Sign Language (or ASL) is the dominant sign language of the Deaf community in the United States, in the English-speaking parts of Canada, and in some regions of Mexico. ASL is a language that has its own grammar and syntax rules.
13. Is your avatar a sign? post 95
Yes. My avatar is the sign for "I Love You". see post 95 for explanation.
14. Did you know any sign language? post 181 answer by my MOM
I knew NOTHING!!! I repeat....NOTHING. I threw myself into learning everything I could to try and give her a full and happy life. We tried all kinds of hearing aids, speech therapy, tactile aids, cochlear implant candidate testing....you name it.
15. How did she sign when she was a baby? post 181 answer by my MOM
Deaf children babble in sign just as hearing children babble when learning to talk. It is called "Baby Sign". They may have the right handshape but the wrong placement or the right placement and the wrong handshape. And sometimes I just plain didn't know what she was trying to say. I have video of her signing when and it is so incredibly cute.
16. Do you have video of her saying anything before she went Deaf?
post 181 answer by my Mom
Yes, I do and it is still hard for me to watch...but I have it. She could say: Momma, Dada, kitty, cookie, bye-bye, outside, no and some other words. As time went by she lost the ability to say the words because she got NO auditory feedback to reinforce speech.
It was very sad to watch it happen and yes...I cried more as I watched it happen.
17. Do you have a lot of Deaf friends? post 189
I have lot of Deaf friends: kids, adult, and Deaf families. We meet at school, Deaf Church, or Deaf Club.
18. What is a Sign Language Interpreter? Source-nchearingloss.org post 198
A sign language interpreter is a person trained in translating between a spoken and a signed language. This usually means someone who interprets what is being said and signs it for someone who can't hear, but understands sign. Of course, the interpreter also will interpret and speak the words which convey the meaning of whatever the signing person signs so hearing people can "hear" what is signed. Since ASL (American Sign Language) is a completely different language from English; it cannot be translated "word for word", so it requires considerable skill to be a sign language interpreter.
19. Did you know that there are Deaf sign language interpreter??? Source-About.com post 198
Deaf interpreters are very skilled at communicating information to deaf people, and they usually work together with hearing interpreters. Sometimes a deaf person is unable to use a regular hearing interpreter for a variety of reasons such as: not having an adequate base in regular sign language, not speaking American version of sign language, not being able to see well.
20. Do you go see movies at the movie theater?? post 288
No. Movies at the theater do not have CC (closed captioning). Occasionally, there will be a special presentation of a movie that offers captioning...that is VERY RARE. It ususally has to be a movie that is of special interest to people with disabilities. Most of the time, Deaf people wait for movies to come out on DVD.
21. What does CC mean? Closed Caption: means the words are on the tv or movie
22. How does Closed Caption Work? (Howstuffworks.com) Post 308
Some shows are captioned in real time. That is, during a live broadcast of a special event or of a news program, captions appear just a few seconds behind the action to show what is being said. A stenographer listens to the broadcast and types the words into a special computer program that adds the captions to the television signal. The typists have to be skilled at dictation and spelling and they have to be very fast and accurate at typing.

Other shows carry captions that get added after the show is produced. Caption writers use scripts and listen to a show's soundtrack so they can add words that explain sound effects. On a game show, for example, when there is no dialogue but there is laughter, the caption will say "Audience laughing."
23. Where did American Sign Language come from???About.com post 305
What we call American Sign Language actually has roots in Europe. It is also known that in the 18th century, the teacher of the deaf Abbe de l'Epee of France developed an early form of sign language that contributed to American Sign Language. The Abbe de l'Epee developed a system of manual French similar in concept to Signed Exact English.
24. Did you ever considering getting a Cochlear Implant?
A cochlear implant was considered. I went through all the testing and it was determined that due to the ossicification (bone growth) in the cochlea due to the menegitis and due to several neurological problems caused by the menegitis that I was NOT a good candidate. That was nine years ago. Today the technology is SO much better. If I had become Deaf "today" it might have been different.
25. What is a relay service? (Post 115)
I use relay service to talk to hearing people. relay: I call service and type in number I want call. The operator talk to hearing person just as I type. They not say: She says she want to make appointment. Operator talk like she/he is me: Hello, this is.... I would like to make appt. for... They even make my english sound better. Lucky for me. Then the operator type back what the hearing person say to me.
26. Which signs do you think are the most important for people to know? Especially in an Emergency? (Post 48 & 482)
Want Help Wait Hurt Sick Sorry Thank you Please

28. What are Deaflympic?
Deaflymipic are the Olympic Games for the Deaf. This year they will be held in Taipei, Taiwan from Sept 5th through the 15th. The only qualifier (besides skill) is that the athlete must have at least a 55db hearing loss in the better ear. That means if an athlete has a 90db loss in one ear and a 35db loss in the other, they DO NOT qualify. However, if the athlete has a 90 db loss in one ear and a 55db loss in the other, they DO qualify.

Wow! I think that is super awesome that you know sign language! When I was in kindergarden my teacher taught us some sign language like the alphabet, the pledge of allegence, twinkle twinkle little star and stuff like that. But as I got older I forgot most of the sign language we did in that class, but someday I would love learn again, not just a little but the whole thing!
