The question is: "DO you think faith is necessary for survival? Do people need something to believe in to keep them alive?" Yes or no, and why or why not?
Anyone can answer, but just keep in mind my answer will be 'no' because the most thing I have faith in is my iPod. But I just want to hear your opinions.
Thanks!
(Sorry in advanced if that makes no sense.) My answer would be: Originally Posted by Arianna No, we do not need faith for survival. Many people who do not have belief in the gods or religion have survived, proof to this statement. Though it may help in extremely depressing situations, faith does not make the decision between life and death. *LOL, I seriously just hugged my computer very gently so it does not become tempted to explode. * Very true. *hugs computer* | | | | 01-08-2010, 10:56 AM | #3363 | Wellowie Webkinz :) Join Date: Dec 2007 Posts: 4,076 | Re: ..::RELIGILESS::.. the club for those without a religion. ~agrees with above~ haha i'm stuck at home today. (and there's like maybe 6 inches on the ground here. ) but it's Friday, so I get today off anyway. Which means I need to work on my homework and finish a little more of a certain sparkly pachyderm... That is a good question. Here is my answer: We do see God; we see Him through missionaries, we see Him through good deeds people do, we see Him through miracles, and people have even seen angels, which are heavenly beings that God sends.
How do we know He is real? Another good question. I think every Believer has a different opinion on that question. I believe He is real because of the Bible, and scientific evidence that shows that a God is a reasonable explanation, but that's just me. Some Believers think He is real because they can feel his presence. Others think because of miracles or prayers that have been answered in their lives.
Why is His name God? God comes from the Greek word theo, which, I believe, they used as their word for their gods, which the first Christians used as their word for their God.
How do we know He is in heaven?
I hope I don't offend anyone by capitilizing God and the pronouns referring to Him. If you don't mind my barging in..
I'd like to expand on Wowewe's post.
I see God, through everything around me. Nature, for instance. To me, nothing can just run on it's own. Lawnmowers don't start on their own, (Well, usually, unless you have a VERY messed up lawnmower.. xD) someone or something must start it. Same way with nature. (For this example, I'll use trees.) Trees, according to the "lawnmower princible" cannot run on their own. I believe with all my heart, that God "runs" them.
But that's just my opinion. (Please keep in mind I'm not trying to push my beliefs on you, these are just my opinions. I don't want someone accusing me for doing so.(
Wowewe is right about the greek, but the Bible, (Which we believe God wrote by inspiring his believers to write.) says that God has many names. Some of which are: YHWH (also called Yahweh)and Elohim. I could go deeper, (I did a study on the names of God in school) but I don't really remember!
I hope this helps, and that I didn't go deep. | | | 01-08-2010, 11:50 AM | #3366 | Guest | Re: ..::RELIGILESS::.. the club for those without a religion. Eh, ya sorta did. In my opinion, all of you saying that there isn't any other way for things to be possible is sorta annoying me. You know, I'd just really rather that I could talk with my friends here without having your beliefs forced on me. I know you guys don't mean it, but it sort of annoys me.
No offence, but this is the only place I can come to get away from 'god'. | | | | 01-08-2010, 01:28 PM | #3367 | hy yes, I am VERY Gifted Join Date: Jan 2009 Posts: 2,698 | Re: ..::RELIGILESS::.. the club for those without a religion. No offence, but this is the only place I can come to get away from 'god'. I'm sorry if us talking about this is giving you a hard time. We really didn't mean it. Somebody asked a question and he was just trying to answer it, not trying to force anything on you. I am sittin here in my tank top=) I love the warm California weather=)) We saw snow once this year and it was gone within hours of sunrise. Altho if we wanted we could take a 60 minute ride to tahoo or a bit over an hour to the Pacific Ocean.
I do not mind folks talking about religion here. I know in my heart and soul there is no "god"...of any kind. My parents know this...my husbands parents know this...and even my youngest daughter knows this. To cheer up my non religious friends I shall post some more incredible quotes from some of the folks who really made this country into what it is today. Lighthouses are more helpful then churches. — Benjamin Franklin The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a *****en man is happier than a sober one. — George Bernard Shaw A man is accepted into a church for what he believes and he is turned out for what he knows. — Samuel Clemens (i.e. Mark Twain)
Now onto Famous Athiests and Agnostics! Douglas Adams
Gene Roddenberry
Joss Whedon
Isaac Asimov
Robert Heinlein
Terry Pretchett
Noam Chomsky
Salman Rushdie
Do not ever take offense to what others believe. Take the information they share and use it to your best abilities. The stories in any of the bibles today (Koran, Jewish Bible, etc.) are very interesting to read and tell a history of sorts....tho most of the history is taken out of context and changed dramaticaly...they still tell a history of a time before it was written down. It is kind of like us wrighting about King Arthur as tho we knew him personally....or about the last great Ice Age. (which was during the middle ages)
You all have a beautiful afternoon=)
/hugs

Ahh thank you, Diawnie, my mood is much better now. I didn't know that Benjamin Franklin said that... he has many, many quotes, as I found out. (and please give us some of your warm weather... without melting the snow here. Why can't it snow AND be warm? Or do I have to break out the coconut flakes and just pretend in the summer? ) | | | | | | Tags | atheist pride <3, believe what you do, bluski was here!, code orange, don't be mean to them, dont diss us, free willed heart, hailee, hi :), imma non- believer, it's still all good :), javogabo, lauren was here, love the atheists, madtv ish non-believer, monkeecj wuz hear, non-believer, nonbelievers are cool, open mind, science is the truth!, veronicaa was here!, we come in peace, we want jelly donuts!, yay for atheism!, zkat is a non-believer :) | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | | | Thread Tools | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off
