*What are the challenges nurses and healthcare professions face today?
*What changes need to occur in nursing and healthcare? ___________________________________________________________________ The Nurses’ Club I have found nursing to be a very rewarding career. It offers endless opportunities to help others, and make a difference in the world. It is my purpose, in forming a nurses’ club, to discuss our careers, and to discuss nursing with those who are considering it or pursuing nursing as a career. This club is for nurses and those who are considering nursing as a career. These are some questions I would like to discuss: What do you enjoy about nursing? What interests you in nursing? How has it been rewarding to you? What would you recommend to a nursing student, or someone new to nursing? Keep in mind the WI rules. These are issues we will not discuss: *Do not disclose your age. If you are a student, it’s ok to say so, but do not say you are a teen. *Do not discuss the name of your state, city/community, nor the name of your school you attend. *Do not give out names of Doctors or Healthcare facilities where you work. *Do not give out private client information—there are strict laws against this. *We will not give medical advise, treat, diagnosis, or prescribe. Please see your local healthcare provider for this. *Do keep a positive conversation. Let us encourage & inspire one another. It is ok to say what field you work in (ie: peds, OB, home care, oncology, ect.) without giving details as to where and for whom. I’ll start by answering some of my own questions. I became a nurse because I enjoyed studying sciences and biology. It is my mission to serve clients, and to meet not only their physical needs, but there emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Nursing offers job flexibility and job security. As the population of older adults continues to increase, there will always be a need for nurses. What has been your career path as a nurse? What interests you about nursing? I look forward to discussing these issues with you. J

I have a DIVERSE range of medical knowledge but would LOVE to improve it! (You know what they say, 'A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing!) I have been in and out of hospital for the last 4 years with a 'condition' that I will probably fight for the rest of my life.
My mother was a nurse, my brother is an RN, my niece is going to school for medical and my daughter is working on her EMT, my other daughter nic4all has been talking about going back to school for her LPN and this puts me in a position where, if I want to talk with them, I would like to NOT be left out of a conversation...so, may I join in the conversations? I promise not to give 'advice' considering I am not a practitioner. | | | 09-29-2008, 07:26 PM | #3 | Gift Guru Join Date: Jun 2008 Posts: 11,417 | Re: The Nurses' Club: For Nurses and those who want to be a nurse Sure, Dixiecup. Sounds like you've got a lot of experience with nursing. I welcome your comments. What have been your observations of nurses? What sort of conversations do you have with your family members? Is there anything you'd like to share with us? | | | 09-29-2008, 08:10 PM | #4 | Gift Guru Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 1,732 | Re: The Nurses' Club: For Nurses and those who want to be a nurse I am thrilled to be a part of this group!!! I have worked in the hospital field since I was a teen... started out as a Tech in a very small, I MEAN VERY SMALL, community hospital.... one floor, no ICU, tiny........ I then progressed to bigger and better hospitals.... I guess I was most compelled to become an RN when my husband, (then fiancee) Jason, was paralyzed while serving in the Navy.... I went with him to another state far from my home to participate in his inpatient rehabilitation.... I knew then that nursing was my calling.... I primarily have worked in Critical Care Services.... largely Pediatric Intensive Care Units, but also dabbled in Neuro ICU (an adventure in itself) both at a very large hospital affiliated with a University, and regular Critical Care Units in more local smaller hospitals.... I am not presently working as a nurse because we adopted a baby back in March.... if/when I do return to the nursing field, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get into like inpatient adolescent psych nursing or something along those lines!!!
Sorry for the novel... LOL.... I could go on and on.... I am so thrilled that you started this group and look forward to answering questions, and further discussion!!!!! | | | 09-29-2008, 10:19 PM | #5 | Gift Guru Join Date: Jun 2008 Posts: 11,417 | Re: The Nurses' Club: For Nurses and those who want to be a nurse Hi RNfor 48,
welcome! interesting to hear about your career path!
if you're interested in adolescent psych nursing, there's a lot outpatient, as well. there's also a lot of courses & certifications available on line now. that's something to look into, when the time is right.
I've worked adult med/surg my career, with a specialty in intravenous therapy & home care. then i worked on a masters degree in community health nursing, & now i'm a nursing instructor at a college. it's a great job. part time, & flexible around a family. my passion is health promoption & prevention--an area where we can certainly benefit from, & with more emphasis on prevention, it would reduce costs & provide improved outcomes.
what have you found to be rewarding in nursing, RNfor48? what do you enjoy about the profession? | | | 10-03-2008, 01:44 PM | #6 | Gift Guru Join Date: Jun 2008 Posts: 11,417 | Re: The Nurses' Club: For Nurses and those who want to be a nurse would love to talk w/ you about nursing | | | 10-03-2008, 02:49 PM | #7 | paws11kitty Webkinz :) Join Date: Feb 2008 Posts: 6,935 | Re: The Nurses' Club: For Nurses and those who want to be a nurse my mom is a nurse | | | 10-03-2008, 03:10 PM | #8 | jus0210 Gift Guru Join Date: Jun 2007 Posts: 4,099 | Re: The Nurses' Club: For Nurses and those who want to be a nurse Hello! everyone I am a RN/Case Manager in a long term rehab facility. I love my job, I have the great pleasure of working with the patients and thier families when care in the home is no longer an option or when they leave a hospital and need therapy before returning to thier homes within the community. I take great pride in helping my patients or family members come up with solutions to improve thier quality of life. This is a very rewarding career and anyone who goes into the field can find a niche. There are so many things a nurse can become involved in. Trust me it is more then giving shots and passing pills. | | | 10-03-2008, 04:03 PM | #9 | Gift Guru Join Date: Jun 2008 Posts: 11,417 | Re: The Nurses' Club: For Nurses and those who want to be a nurse Originally Posted by paws11kitty my mom is a nurse Hi, paws11kitty. Hi J-Bird! It's nice to meet you! Thanks for telling us about your career. You are so right, it is a lot more that shots & pills. It's a very rewarding career. My hope is that others will consider a career in nursing. Last edited by momwhoplays; 10-03-2008 at 04:03 PM.. I work nights so my sleep schedule is all mixed up. I can't wait to meet other nurses who are addicted to Webkinz in their off hours.
I love that nursing allows for shifts that fit in with family life - I work around my family so that I can get my kids off to school and then go to sleep and get up when they finished school and spend the evening with them and then go to work after they are in bed.
I also love that my job is to assist my patients and their families through a difficult time in their lives and to make it as comfortable as possible. It is very rewarding to know that although the families are sad, I have helped to make the death as easy and normal as possible (we all have to die sometime).
A few years ago, when I was working in acute care on a super busy and short staffed unit I would have told anyone going into nursing that they were crazy and to find another career. Now I would say that everyone who has a desire to become a nurse should work at finding the job that suits them the best. Some of us thrive on chaos and stress and busyness of saving lives, some of us prefer quieter surroundings and the ability to permit our patients to make the best out of the time they have left. | | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | | | Thread Tools | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off
