OK, here is the hole everyone has problems with -- including me. But, it is possible to get a birdie!!
Hole #14 is an S-shaped double dogleg, par 3. The tee is on a raised ledge and the first dogleg is left.
I am going to show two ways to play this hole. The reason? The strategy for making a birdie is very high risk. If you miss the 2nd shot (and you usually will), the result often leaves you in a position where it takes another 2 strokes to reach the hole. Bogies are not nice on your scoresheet!!
First the safe route to getting a simple par 3 on hole #14. This is highly recommended for when you are playing a tournament where you can not risk losing any strokes by attempting the birdie strategy.
Aim your tee shot at the clump of purple iris flowers, just like in this picture. .
Here is another closeup view of that 1st shot. Use full power. Then give that ball a big whack!!
The ball will bounce around the first dogleg corner and end up about a third of the way towards the upper left corner of the course.
Still a long way to the hole!! Aim ahead a bit more than halfway down on the angled wall. Don't try to go much lower!! You could hit the straight wall instead and bounce back to a bad spot. You can't reach the hole with just one shot anyway, so don't try.
The picture below shows where to aim for shot #2 and where the ball should end up.
Then you will have a short easy putt. A safe par every time! .
BUT, WHO WANTS SAFE -- RIGHT? NOW, LET’S GO FOR THE BIRDIE!!
From the par method shown above, you know that it is impossible to make a birdie by going the long way to the hole. We have to use that middle "bypass" corridor to the right instead.
This time for the tee shot, aim slightly lower -- right at the center of the 3rd bush. We want the ball to end up closer to the entrance of the bypass.
Player number one has already taken his shot in this picture and you can see the spot where the ball will end up.
Here is a close-up of that tee shot. It should be precisely like this. Full power and hit it!
The next picture shows where you should be to make the birdie attempt. The shot will have to hit just a pinch before the 2nd 45 degree corner, as shown by the black line.
And here is what can happen if you can hit that exact spot -- an amazing series of bounces and the ball just barely reaches the hole for the birdie!
So, now, it is time for the Clint Eastwood decision. "You've got to ask yourself one question: Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?"
If you think the ball is not near this ideal position, it is still possible to take the long and safe route to the easy par.
Nyah-h-h --- lets hit it!! Bank - bank - bank - bank - bank - then a soft tap off the last wall and it is almost there! .
--- ker-plunk! The "impossible" birdie is NOT impossible after all. .
You will not make this birdie very often, but when you do, it is so-o-o-o-o sweet. . Last edited by BERT_X; 06-08-2008 at 08:14 AM.. |
