They only chase you when you get too close to their tree stump. When they do come off the stump, they come in the direction you were in when you became too close. They can't veer off that corse, so move another direction. If you need to go past them, come towards them a few spaces off to the side and just keep moving. They will head towards the place you started and although they will be close to you, they won't get you.
You need to get a pattern down on each level and ALWAYS take your time. If I rush, I find I make dumb mistakes ( like jumping off a log) Speaking of logs, always jump in the middle of a log - if you jump at the end, sometimes even though it looks like you should be on, they bump you off.
