Talking ~Wings~ Book one~Kiyomi~

*~ Approved ~ *

~Prologue~

"I can't take this any more. . ." My mother whispered in the other room. I sat alone in the long hallway with the door, to the room mother was in, cracked. The soft yellow light shined like a sliver down the hallway and onto my face. My three birds chirped softly in wounder. Mother had gotten these birds for me when it was my fifth birth day and shortly after it happened. I terraformed into my true self.
Before mother new she was pregnant she allowed scientists to do experiments on her for money. They mixed her DNA with those of a bird. Apparently the whole time they did this mother was pregnant with me. All the DNA that was put into her system was transmitted into me. They had no way of way of knowing though. After mother found out about me she stopped the experiments and went home thinking nothing had gone wrong.
I always acted strange- Like a bird. Loved the sun, the sky and everything. I was always able to understand birds and they always told me what I was. They said I had powers and was a bird. When I asked mother she told me different. When I got my pet birds they started telling me the same things. When I was playing with them one day I got carried away and transformed. Mother flipped out and now here I am.
"She's a freak, please take her." Mother said in a trembling voice.
"I don't know. . ."
"You said you have others like her, she'll fit in fine!"
"Very well. . ."
One of my birds hopped onto my hand and up to my shoulder. "When the man comes throw your hands out." He whispered.
"Why?" I asked.
"You'll see."
A man dressed in a cream white soit walked into the hallway. The yellow light poured into the hallway making me squint my eyes. The man reached out his hand for me to take it. "Come now, Dear." He said in a sweat voice.
I looked at my birds and the blinked. I shook my head and took the mans hand. "Will I be happy?" I asked as we walked out of the house.
"I believe so. . ." He smiled. I looked back at my house one last time to see my mother peering out her window with tears in her eyes. I lifted my head towards the sky to let the moon beam down on my face. My birds flew above my head and occasionally landed on my shoulder. As we walked down the long street hand in hand I though, "This is a new beginning."

~Chapter one Sakura~
"Wake up, Sakura!" One of my birds chirped. The ruby bird hopped on my head and yanked strands of my hear.
"Cut it, Kin!" I mumbled into my pillow.
"Kiyomi will wake up before you. . ." Kin my ruby humming bird reminded me. I snapped my head up, swung my feet over the bed and got dressed. Kiyomi always woke up before me and I've always wanted to beat her. I checked the clock and it said 5:23. I should win this time! I slid down the stairs, my three birds flying noisily behind me. I jumped the last two steps and slid on my green socks to the kitchen. To my disbelief, Kiyomi was sitting silently at the dinning table stroking her birds feathers. She was oh so lovely. I was always jealous of her pure beauty.
Her hair was short and snow white. She had bright yellow-gold eyes and always wore this white cote with spotted feathers on it. She was graceful and silent, sweat and mysterious. She was an owl.
She smiled triumphantly as her snowy owl hopped onto her shoulder with a soft, "who. . ."
"What time do you wake?" I sighed as I pulled out a wooden chair and plopped down.
"In the morning. . ." She said in a soft voice. Her voice was like silk or a whisper of wind. So soothing. Looking at her and hearing her made me feel horrible about myself. I twirled my thin fingers through my long strands of red hair. Not a pure snow white. A plain red. I swung my legs back and forth making a loud whooshing noise. If Kiyomi did this it would be silent. It wasn't fair. . .
"What?" She asked seeing my change in mood.
"Nothing." I mumbled. She didn't buy it.
"Do you want me to give you a make over today?"
I looked up surprised, and nodded without a second thought. "We could ask Sora to come with us too." I added.
Kiyomi nodded.
Latter on Sora stomped down the stairs. She hated mornings. When I say hate I mean hate. "Run! Run for your lives! She's coming!" I screamed. Kiyomi giggled, it sounded like singing. Sora walked behind me and smacked me hard in the back of the head. "Ow!"
She was not as graceful as Kiyomi but more graceful then me. She had long shiny brown hair and always wore a brown leather jacket with black pants. Her hawk landed on her shoulder with a high pitched squeal.
Sora grabbed a black scrunchy out of her jacket pocket and tied her hair back. "Were is, Azumi?" She asked sliding into her seat. "I'm hungry, what's for breakfast? Hay, what are we doing today?"
"Stop!" I yelled. She always asked a jumble of questions at once. "Azumi's at work, make your own breakfast and we are all going to get a make over today." Azumi was the one who took us all in. We all live in this house together.
Sora sighed and slumped in her chair. I tapped my fingers on the glossy black table in an even tone and Kiyomi stare into the distance- probably day dreaming.

"Okay, lets go!" I cheered as we walked out the door. Time to get my make over. I watched Kiyomi walk silently in her white dress. She looked so graceful. Sora came up behind me and smacked me in the head. "What!?" I yelled turning around to face her.
"It bothers me that you look up to her so much just because she's beautiful." Sora muttered under her breath. I could barely make out the words. We all had superb hearing and of cores Kiyomi's was the best.
"Jealous. . ." I whispered. She smacked me again of cores. "Would you stop that!"
"No."
I sighed and turned back around. Kiyomi had stopped far up ahead and was staring at something. She was peering into a store window in wonder. A man about the same age as her walked out of the store with a couple of plastic bags in his hands. Her eyes fallowed him until he was out of sight. What was that about?
Sora and I caught up to Kiyomi. She looked off. "Kiyomi. . .?" I said. She looked at me with confusion in her eyes. "You okay?" It was a stupid question but I had to ask. She nodded and we moved on.
Kiyomi looked lost in though the whole way home witch made me worried. What had that guy done to her? We walked into our house and stopped in shock. That guy we saw at the store was cooking in our kitchen. He had crow black hair and wore black jeans and a black jacket. I saw the look on Kiyomi's face and could not stop myself. "who do you think you are!? You can't just come in here and-"
"Sakura. . ." Azumi walked into the room holding a book. He had light brown hair and was wearing a robe. I didn't say anything. It was rude to talk back to our care taker. Kiyomi almost ran out of the room and up the stairs. I heard the door slam shut and all eyes were on me. "What?" I asked backing up.
"You were very rude to our new guest so you should apologize." Azumi said.
"Wh- What?" I was flabbergasted. He was the one who should apologize for just coming in here. I didn't want to look like a child so I turned to the man in the kitchen and said, "I'm sorry for being rude."
The man nodded and turned back to what he was doing. What! That's all? What a-
"This is Akito, he is also a mutant as well." I cringed at the word mutant. Azumi knew that word hurt us but still he chose to use it. I didn't really like Azumi but the others told me to be respectful to him. I searched the man up and down looking for his bird. I saw nothing. I looked harder and saw two back liquid eyes. The bird must be blending in with his jacket. My birds started whispering to each other on my shoulder. I didn't trust him one bit.
"Um. . . I'm going to go check on Kiyomi." Sora told me heading upstairs.
"I'm going to go to my room." Azumi said turning around. Just as I started walking to the stairs Azumi said, "Help Akito with the cooking." I wanted to scream. I know Azumi did that on purpose. I dragged my feet along the carpet to the tile kitchen floor. I peeked over his shoulder to see what he was making and got out supplies to help him. We worked quietly together for what seemed to be hours- but really only five minutes. I was lost in though thinking about Kiyomi and not paying attention to what I was doing. I was slicing vegetables and since I was not paying attention the blade slipped and sliced through my skin. The knife slipped through my hand onto the floor as my finger started to bleed. It was a pretty bad cut. Akito turned on the fosit and grabbed a hand full of paper towels. I was shocked actually, I didn't think he noticed. I put my hand under the running water to get the blood off, turned it off the water and wrapped my finger in paper towels. Akito was cleaning of the table and other places I spilled blood. "Sorry," I said.
"Its fine," he answered. I wanted to help him out but he already had everything done. I sat at the table and held my finger tight to try and stop the bleeding. I felt really stupid. I can't believe I nearly chopped off my finger because I was day dreaming. My birds landed on the table beside me and started humming my favorite song. I couldn't help but smile.
"Why don't you go take care of your finger and I finish this." Akito said.
"I can help, the bleeding has almost stopped." I didn't want to seem weak by going to my room when I got hurt.
"Really, its okay." I had the feeling he wanted me gone.
"I can help." I said again. No way was he getting what he wanted.
"Jeez, your really suborn," he sighed. Yes, I was annoying him.
I checked my finger and it was finished bleeding. I cleaned it off and put a band aid on. Akito sighed again as we began to work again.

~Chapter two Kiyomi~

Kiyomi lay on her bed, deep in though. She was confused for the first time in her life and she new it was because of that man she saw at the store. Kiyomi had refused to go eat dinner because of that man and she was now starving. Her stomach grumbled and her snowy owl hooted softly. "The ghost should be clear," she mumbled.
She crept down the stairs silently with her owl on her shoulder. Everyone should be asleep now. To her surprise the kitchen light was on and she heard the sound of silverware clinking together. A black crow was sitting on the dinning room table staring at her with liquid black eyes. Kiyomi froze. Who's bird was that? The crow squawk and the light in the kitchen turned out, the crow flew out of sight and it was dead silent.
Although it was pitch black dark she could still see clearly. Kiyomi tip toed to the kitchen and peered inside the dark room. She saw nothing and heard nothing. On the kitchen counter there was eqintment she had never seen before. It looked painful. Images of her child hood flashed before he eyes. People in white lab coats surrounding her with needles or sticks or even tranquilizers. She shuddered at the flash back and walked over to the glass eqintment. She picked up a glass thing. She had no words to describe it. It had a thick liquid in it. She new what that was. She had swallowed that disgusting drink before. The scientist had mixed together human things to see if she would be affected by it. This was all lab stuff that you use to do tests on mutants. She dropped the glass and back up fast. The glass shattered on the tile floor. She shook her head fiercely, backing up. Something grabbed her from behind and yanked her into a dark room. The person had their hand over her mouth to prevent her from crying out.
"Chill," a mans voice whispered. chill? Kiyomi thought. Her owl was sitting calmly so she relaxed. The man released her and she spun around to face him. She almost dropped dead. Her face grew hot and her legs felt wobbly. It was the man she saw at the store, Akito? Her face must have been a cherry red because Akito was fighting back a laugh.
"Did you do that?" She asked.
"What, the lab stuff? No, I heard someone in here so I came to look." Akito answered. That was a lie and she new it.
"That's not true." He looked shocked for a split second then composed his face to a different emotion.
"What did you come down here for?" He must of been trying to change the subject. Kiyomi became aware of how close together she was to him and jumped back, hitting her head into a wall.
"Were am I?" She asked. She had not gone one inch farther away from him. Her face was getting hot again. Akito flipped on a switch. The bright light revealed that we were in a bathroom. I didn't know are bathroom was this small- of cores I've never been in here with another person, she thought.
She suddenly had an awkward feeling and her face became hotter. She looked down letting her snow white hair cover her face. "So. . . Can we come out?" She asked kinda hoping he would say yes but also wanting him to say no.
"I'll check," he said in a way that made Kiyomi think he was hiding something. He waved his hand and a black crow flew to the door. "Oh," She said turning the nob on the door to open it. The bird flew out like a black cloud. The door shut behind her without her pushing the door. She pulled her knees up to her chest to rest her head on. Her snowy owl waddled over to her side.
"What's her name?" Akito asked.
"Um, Yuki," she said looking down at her bird. "What about your bird?"
"Minori," he said.
"Truth," she scowled. The name Minori meant truth and she knew he was hiding something. He was lying about something huge and she wanted to find out.
"What?" He asked with a hint of frustration in his voice.
"What?"
"Do you not let anything go?" He asked standing up. She stud automatically also. He reached over her to grab the door nob and yanked the door open. He hesitated before walking out the door in a hurry. When he left Kiyomi fell to her knees and her face was steaming hot. She rubbed her face and sat still on the floor for a moment. She sighed heavily then got to her wobbly feet.
"I'm acting so stupid," she said to herself in a shaky voice.

~Chapter three: The kitchen~

I raced down the wooden stairs, my humming birds close behind me. I skipped the last five steps and landed with a loud thud. I entered into a dark silent living room/dinning room. "Yes!" I cried punching the air. "Victory is ours, my flying friends. Hahaha!" I had finally woken up before Kiyomi.
"Could you keep it down?" A man asked as he came out of the bathroom. I froze unable to move from shock. I had finally beat Kiyomi and was as happy as could be and Akito comes out. I wanted to scream! I slowly turned my head towered Akito and he didn't look happy about this either.
"Good morning," I smiled walking over happily. Time to annoy the cra.p out of him. "What are you doing up so early?"
"Nothing," he answered in a slightly irritated tone.
"I see. Want some pancakes?" I asked going into the kitchen.
"No."
"I'll make you some anyways." I said cheerfully.
"Alright! Let me help." He said skipping into the kitchen. I slammed the kitchen knife I had in my hand into the counter with frustration. He knew what I was doing so he was trying to annoy me also. It was working. Why do I have a knife in my hand? I asked myself. Oh yeah, I was moving it out of my way. I put the knife into the drawer and grabbed a spoon.
Akito was mixing water and pancake mix together with a wide grin on his face. Man, that made me mad. I grabbed the eggs out of the fridge and walked slowly to his side smiling sweetly. "Here," I said in my sweetest voice as I cracked an egg over Akito's head. The egg shell shattered easily in my grip and the yellow yoke oozed through my fingers and plopped onto his head. He gasped in shock and looked up at me slowly with a smile on his face. I tilted my head- still smiling.
"Thank you," he said in a voice that sounded like honey. He grabbed an egg and cracked it over over the bowl full of mix. I twirled around to get flower out of a cabinet. I had the flower opened in my hands and heard the crunching sound fallowed by the cold squishy feel of yoke on the back of my head. The flower slipped from my fingers in shock and the white powder puffed up in a cloud of smoke. The cloud of flower stained my clothes and face in white.
Behind me I heard Akito try and smother his laughter and that really ticked me off. I slowly bent and picked up the bag of flower. I slowly stud up. . . And flung the heavy bag of flower across the kitchen. Guess were it landed? Hard on his head. The bag split and flower poured everywhere. The kitchen flooded with white powder and we were like ghosts. Every inch of ourselves were covered in powder.
"What's going on in here?!" That lovely voice asked. Kiyomi standed frozen in the kitchen door way- covered in flower.
"Kiyomi! I'm sorry." I yelled running over with a wet rag. I started rubbing the flower off from her white silk dress. Her eyes were locked on Akito. This was bothering my beyond belief. "We'll clean this up. You go sit." I said nearly shoving her out the kitchen. As she left a single white feather slipped from under her dress and onto the tile floor. When she was gone Akito and I exchanged a glance and lunged for the feather.
"Get off!" I yelled as he tried to pry my fingers away from the feather. "Why do you want it so bad?" I asked as he kicked me in the head.
"I could ask the same!" He shot back. He slipped the feather out and had it in his grasp. "Haha," he laughed but fell like a rock when I kicked him in the leg.
"Gimme it!" I screamed. I ran at him full force to be stopped by his hand on my head. You know in those cartoons were your swinging your arms ad are just out of reach, with the persons hand holding you back? That's how it looked. I had the feeling Kiyomi had gone to her room and was not paying attention to us because she didn't come to stop us. Good.
I lunged for his legs and he tumbled to the floor, the feather floating threw the air. Were did this feather even come from? It looked like her owl's feather but way bigger. I jumped for it but Akito had grabbed my legs and was holding them to the floor. "Darn it! Let go you freak!" He released my legs and stud up quickly. Great, who was here now? I looked up reluctantly to see Azumi towering over me with the feather in his hand. I gave a heavy sigh and got to my feet. Before I turned to leave I gave one last long hard glance at Akito and Azumi. It seemed like they were connected in some way, but. . . I headed up the stairs and into my room to see Kiyomi sitting on my bed. She looked confused. I had never seen her look like this. I narrowed my eyes, anger surged threw me. I bet it was all because of Akito.
"What's wrong?" I asked ploping on my bed next to her.
"Well. . . Last night I went into the kitchen. . ." She took a deep breath and continued. "I saw lab stuff from when I was in "The Room"."

~Chapter Four~

Sora dragged her feet as she walked down the stairs. She walked into an empty room witch was shocking. Kiyomi wasn't up and not even Sakura. Sora's hawk peeped deep in his throat as she moved into the living room. "wa-" she cried falling face first into the carpet. Her foot had slipped on a piece of carpet that was flipped up. She pulled herself to her feet and went to flipp the carpit back. She almost gasped. The lifted piece of carpit revlieled a metal door in the floor. She crawled over the door and her hand on the freezing metal. She gripped the the lach that opened the door and pulled. The heavy door opened with a click and freezing cold smoke pored out of the door.

Dear readers, I picked out all the names with great care. The name 'Kiyomi' means 'pure beauty' 'Sora' means 'Sky' and 'Sakura' means 'cherri blossom' in Japanese.
