FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!! ~8/27/09~ <------- reviewed 11/12 - smitchell Written by soccerox7 and pollytoad77 Chapter 1(Written by pollytoad77) Cassidy sighed with relief when the last period bell rang. She had just started seventh grade a month ago so she was still adjusting to all the different places she was supposed to go and where they where supposed to be. She pushed her brown bangs away from her eyes as she pulled the rest of her books out of her locker and stuffed them in her denim bag. Her heavy load weighed her down as she walked three blocks to home. She pulled her hoody around her more tightly against the cold; she could see her own breath coming out in puffs. She reached her destination and headed up to her room to finish her homework. Then putting on headphones she turned the volume up loud to some techno music as she pulled out her math homework. She couldn't get this problem right, it just was too hard, so instead she turned on her laptop and checked her email. It read: No New Massages She sighed, only her grandma emailed her so she rarely got anything. She picked up a book she was reading and forgot everything else. Chapter 2 (Written by soccerox7) Hannah shuddered as the cold autumn wind nipped at her cheeks. It was quite a long walk home from school- three miles. But she refused to go on the bus again... she would hear too many things she didn't want to know; as if being at a new school wasn't hard enough. Instead, she chose to take forty-five minute walk home in the silent streets of her small town. Hannah let out a small yelp as she tripped over a stick laying on the road. She looked around; there were no trees nearby. All of a sudden, a force pushed on her back, knocking the wind out of her and almost causing her to fall. She hadn't seen that coming. She turned around to come face-to face with her Saint Bernard, Lucy. She happily panted and wagged her tail. "What are you doing here?" she laughed. The large dog tilted her head to the side and raised her brown ears. Hannah couldn't help but smile as she took her dog by the collar back to her house. Chapter 3 (Written by pollytoad77) The Next day was Saturday. “What a relief!” Cassidy thought to herself, she felt like she needed a break. “A break…..” she said to herself and thought of a nice walk in the park then sitting on a bench, enjoying the breeze. She opened her window and felt the air; it was a little warmer them yesterday. She smiled, put on her coat and ran outside. She started walking the few blocks to the public park. When she got there she sat down on the green bench and sniffed the breeze in. She was alone in the park except for one who was walking her big Saint Bernard. Cassidy liked dogs, but right now it was disturbing her peace. She sighed, “Why is a stupid and her dog have to come disturb my peace!” She thought angrily. The looked at her, offended, “I am not stupid!” She said, “And this is a public park! I have every right to walk here.” She patted her dog’s head. “You mean you heard me?” Cassidy asked astonished, “I – I –” She couldn’t find words. “Duh, I heard you!” She said, “You said it loud and clear.” “I didn’t say anything,” Cassidy said, “I only thought those words.” The looked at her oddly, “You mean, I…we can think to each other?” “I guess so….” She thought to her, “Can you hear me?” “Yes,” The smiled and Cassidy smiled back. “What’s your name?” Cassidy asked. “Hannah, Hannah Fisk.” She answered, “And you are?” she inquired. “I’m Cassidy Starr,” Cassidy replied. “I live two blocks away from here.” She thought to her. “Wanna come over?” Chapter 4 (Written by soccerox7) Hannah smiled to herself as she walked home with her large dog and new friend. She had finally found someone just like her! She was no longer alone in the world. Same here, she heard Cassidy think. "Do you go to my school?" Hannah said aloud. "Jefferson Middle?" "Yeah!" she chirped. "Cool! Then maybe I'll see you there on Monday!" said Cassidy. Hannah's dog stopped to sniff a tree. "My house is only a block away. We'll get there soon," Cassidy reassured her. "Ok." They passed by a man. I can't believe I forgot our anniversary! He shook is head and continued to hurriedly walk in front of them. Cassidy and Hannah exchanged glances and giggled into their palms. "Here we are," Cassidy announced, stretching out her arms at the large, white house. "Mo-om! I'm home!" she called once inside, but got no response. She turned to her friend. "I guess she's not here now, but I'm sure she'll be back later." "Your house is amazing!" Hannah cooed. "Thanks," said Cassidy, "want me to take your coat?" "Sure," Hannah said, handing her the light blue windbreaker "Is it alright if Lucy comes in?" she asked, motioning to her dog. "Sure," she said. Just make sure she doesn't drool on the floor. Hannah laughed and brought the dog inside. * * * * * * Chapter 5 (Written by soccerox7) Cassidy lead Hannah up a grand marble staircase up to a door covered in stickers that said things like “Chicks rule!” with a little picture of a baby chick on it or “Smile!” Cassidy turned the shiny, round knob and entered the room. The walls were painted lavender, and Cassidy had a king-sized bed in the very middle of the large room. Hannah saw a door which she figured lead to a closet, and another door (she wasn’t entirely sure where this one went) across from the bed. Inspirational and somewhat cute animal posters adorned the walls. My mom’s here,” Cassidy stated, just before Hannah heard a “Hello sweetie! I’m back!” “Would she get mad if she saw me over here? Or Lucy?” Hannah, asked, glancing down at her dog, who was happily panting and wagging her tail at nothing in particular. “Nah. She likes dogs. But my dad’s allergic, so we can’t have one.” Hannah couldn’t help but notice that Cassidy hadn’t added that her mom wouldn’t mind her staying there. “And she’s like having guests over, too,” Cassidy reassured her. “Mkay,” Cassidy ran her fingers trough her short, brown hair. “So, what do you want to do?” she asked. “Um, I don’t know.” Hannah sighed. Just then, a woman with a grin a mile wide and bouncy hair (yes, it was actually bouncy) stepped through the door. “Hi, hun!” she cooed, kissing her daughter on the forehead. She turned to Hannah. “Hi!” “Oh, Mom, this is my friend, Hannah!” “Hi,” Hannah whispered shyly. She ed her knuckles on each hand, looking towards the floor. Hannah tried to do her best to keep her head clear, because she could have sworn she had seen this woman somewhere before. She just wasn’t sure if Cassidy needed to know. She focused on Cassidy’s poster with a sleeping puppy on it, instead. “You okay?” Cassidy asked. “I’m fine.” * *** * * Chapter 6 (Written by pollytoad77) Cassidy looked at her uncertainly, “You sure?” “Yep,” Cassidy thoughts where interrupted by her mother. “Well, I’ve got to get dinner started; it’s lasagna!” She smiled, “Would you like to join us for dinner, Hannah?” She asked politely. “Um, I’ll have to ask my mom.” She told her. “You can use my phone,” Said Cassidy, handing her a cell phone as her mom left the room. “You have a cell phone?!” Hannah said unbelievably; it was green with frogs on it. “Yep! My mom wants me to carry it everywhere just in case; luckily I get to use it whenever I want.” She grinned, “Maybe you should ask for one on your next birthday.” “Yeah,” She said dialing the number, “Hey, mom? It’s me, Hannah. Oh, my friend, Cassidy let me use hers, uh-huh, yeah, well could I stay for dinner? Really? Thanks mom! Bye!” She hung up. “She said I could!” “I know,” Cassidy replied, grinning, “I read your mind!” Hannah punched her softly in the arm, “Whatever!” she thought to her. Cassidy grinned again, “My mom makes awesome lasagna!” Hannah laughed and they went downstairs to help set the table. ** * * * * Chapter 7(Written by pollytoad77) The next day, Cassidy and Hannah walked to school thinking to each other. “I can’t believe how much homework Mrs. Pine gave us!” Hannah thought. “Me either!” Cassidy thought back, “I had to stay up till one ‘o clock in the morning just to finish it all those math problems!” “At least Mr. Burns gives us easy homework,” Hannah thought, “All we had to do is write up ten different sentences.” Mr. Burns was their English teacher. They arrived at JeffersonMiddle School just as the first bell rang. “Classes are going to be more interesting now that we can read peoples minds,” Cassidy said quietly to Hannah. “Yeah, I can’t wait!” She thought back. They walked into homeroom and took their seats, which was not close to each other; in fact they where on either side of the room. Not that it mattered much, they could secretly think to each other with out the teacher knowing. Or so they thought. Once Cassidy forgot what twelve multiplied by eight is so she thought it to Hannah. It didn’t go very well. “Hey, Hannah, what’s – nine multiplied by – twelve – need a brake – going to win – championship – can you hear me Hannah?” Hannah gave her a confused look and Cassidy tried again. No use. She looked at the clock; just five more minutes till the bell would ring…. She decided to read the teacher’s mind. “I bet they’ll be surprised when I give them a pop quiz tomorrow,” Mrs. Pine thought nastily, “They won’t even think to read chapter four because I told them to turn in chapter four next week.” She stood up and cleared her throat as the bell rang, “Don’t forget to do your homework!” She called as they made their way to the next class. “Hannah!” Cassidy called to her, “Did you hear what the teacher thought?” She asked. “Yeah,” She grinned, “Now we know what to do!” They laughed and they walked to their next class. * * * * * * Chapter 8 (Written by soccorox7) Cassidy and Hannah strolled to their next class: Art. And that particular class happened to be Hannah’s favorite. Not just because of the relaxing atmosphere, the smell of paint, the nice teacher, or because it was one of her best subjects; nope, the best thing about that class in Hannah’s opinion was the cutie she got to sit at a table with. Yes, the stunning Bryce Harris was the reason she enjoyed art so much.
The g.irls walked into the comfortably warm room and took their places in their assigned seats. Hannah’s heart fluttered as Bryce set his books down next to her. She looked over at Cassidy and the pretty gave her a wink. That was when something wonderful crossed Hannah’s mind. I can read his mind! Duh! Hannah tried hard to tune into his brain, and did so successfully. That soccer game against Springfield was tough. My legs are still sore.
Hannah watched in interest as he rubbed his sore thigh. Her art teacher, Ms. Skye, twirled out of the supply closet with excellent grace. Her long, wavy, hair flowed down, almost her waist, and her blue dress/ robe was covered in beads.
“Good morning class!” she sang.
“Good morning!” everyone said with just as much enthusiasm. Ms. Skye had that effect on people, and that was one of the reasons she was such a great teacher.
“Get out your sketchbooks so we can start brainstorming for our next painting project!” she announced.
Hannah pulled out her sketchbook and opened up to a fresh new page. A fresh start, just the way I like it. She began to lightly draw a landscape on the crisp, white page.
She peeked over at Bryce’s. His page was still blank after ten minutes. Hannah couldn’t help but read his mind. One less point on my average in math and I’m going to get kicked off the soccer team! If I could just ace the next pop quiz, my grade will be fine for the quarter! If only I knew when she was going to give one!
“Did you hear that Mrs. Pine is giving a pop quiz tomorrow on chapter four?” Hannah blurted out before she could stop herself.
He turned his flawless face towards her. Hannah’s heart went into her throat. “How’d you know that?”
Whoops. * * * * * * Chapter 9(Written by pollytoad77) Cassidy slid into her seat in Art, ready for whatever Ms. Skye was about to assign them. Ms. Skye was one of her favorite teachers; she was very pretty with long red hair. Cassidy loved doing art, especially painting. “Get out your sketchbooks so we can start brainstorming for our next painting project!” Ms. Skye told the class and Cassidy went right to it. After opening her book she sharpened her pencil and started to draw. “The sky…big billowing clouds…huge majestic mountains…tons of trees…a lake…” She felt someone eyes on her and she looked over to see Alex quickly look away. Cassidy hid her smiled and read his mind. “Man, Cassidy is such a good artist; I wish I could paint like her…she sure is pretty too…” He snuck another glance at her and their eyes met. “She has the most beautiful eyes…” Cassidy looked away, blushing fiercely. “When you have your picture all planned out, you may start painting it in with acrylic paint.” Ms. Skye told the class and Cassidy quickly got up to get some, at the same time, Alex got up too. Cassidy blushed again and sat down quickly, not wanting to get any attention. As Alex walked past he dropped a note on Cassidy’s desk. Cassidy was surprised at what happened; she grabbed it and stuffed it in her bag, without looking at it. After the bell rang, Cassidy ran to her locker and pretended to get something while she read the note. Cassidy,
Hey, I couldn’t help notice what and excellent artist you are. Maybe you could help me with our next project or something.
Alex Cassidy heart was pounding in her ears while she read the note; then she folded it carefully and placed it in her special pouch in her bag just as the bell rang and she hurried to Language. * * * * * * Chapter 10 (Written by soccerox7) “I, uh…I…” Hannah stuttered.
“…was told by someone in another class?” he finished. OK, that works. “Yeah.”
“You have no clue how glad I am to hear that. I’m this close to failing her class,” Bryce said, indicating with his fingers just how close he was to flunking.
“Glad to help,” Hannah smiled.
“Hey, you wanna study or something tonight? I’m definitely going to need some help in math. You seem like you’re pretty good at it.”
“Sort of…” Hannah blushed a deep crimson. How cute, she’s blushing! Hannah overheard Bryce thinking. Hannah quickly buried her face in her hands. She glanced over at Cassidy, who was giggling like crazy. Hannah tuned in. Helikesmehelikesmehelikesmeeee!! Hannah also tuned into the person she was sitting next to, Alex. He was thinking just about the same thing. Hannah couldn’t help but laugh aloud.
“What’s so funny?” Bryce asked, laughing a little himself. What a cutie… he thought.
“Oh, nothing.” Before Hannah could think of an excuse, the bell rang. Hannah got up with her things and headed towards the door.
“Wait up!” Bryce called after her. “We’re still on for tonight, right?”
“Yep,” Hannah smiled. She walked through the door quickly to hide her cherry red face once again.
The hallway was always crowded this time of day, being that everyone was going to lunch. The voices along with the thoughts stirred in Hannah’s head.
"How was bio today?" I'm so tired...
How was I supposed to know there was a test today? "Did you do the math homework last night?"
She pressed her fingers to her temples. However, one thought (or was it a voice?) stood out in particular to her when she heard the word “Bryce”. She tuned in immediately. **** * * Chapter 11 (Written by pollytoad77) Finally school was over and Cassidy jumped out of her seat and out of the school. Reading minds had their ups and downs; it was hard to concentrate if there is a class full of kids thinking nonstop. She was so happy, thinking about Alex. She didn’t know where Hannah went so she went home by herself. As she was walking home, thinking hard, she ran into something solid. “Wha- Oof!” She fell to the ground. “Oh! I’m sorry, are you OK?” came a voice. Cassidy looked up into a face of a very cute boy. “I-I’m fine!” Cassidy said hurriedly getting up. “You sure?” He asked, “Man, she’s cute,” He thought. “Yeah!” She blushed, “Fine,” “I’m Rick,” He told her. “I’m Cassidy,” She said, and then thought, “I wonder if he goes to Jefferson Middle,” “Yep! I’m in eighth grade.” “Oh, ummmm…..” She gave him a confused look, “He can read my mind too?” “Read your mind? Sorry, I don’t understand….” He said awkwardly. “I...um…well...me and Hannah….we… we can read people’s thoughts…and I thought that you could too.” She blushed again. “Oh, umm…OK then, let’s see if you’re right! Think something,” “Ok,” she thought, “I like lasagna,” “Cool! Me too, I mean, you said ‘I like lasagna’.” He said. “Yes! Wow, I thought me and Hannah were the only ones!” She giggled, “Haven’t you noticed that you could read minds?” “No, I usually like to be alone, I like to paint that way too, I just thought that people just talked a lot, plus I concentrate really hard when I paint or do a subject.” “You like to paint too?” She gasped, “I love painting!” “Cool, too bad we’re not in the same grade.” Rick said. “Well then you’ll just have to come over won’t you?” Cassidy said, giving him a playful push in the arm. He pushed her back; she pushed harder, so he pushed harder, until they were rolling around on the ground laughing. Cassidy looked up, “I better get home, my mother is probably wondering about me,” “Sure! How about me meet at the school entrance after school?” “I’ll be there!” “Bye!” “Bye!” Cassidy waved, feeling happier then she had been when she left school. At her desk she pulled out her notebook when a piece of paper fell out. It was Alex’s note! * * * * * * Chapter 12 (Written by soccerox7) Hannah had never been able to tune into the voice she had heard that morning, but she sat through every single class that morning wondering who on earth was thinking something about Bryce. Around sixth period she shook the thought from her head and convinced herself that it was no big deal.
Hannah walked home by herself due to the fact that she couldn’t find Cassidy to walk home with.
As soon as she walked through the green door of her small, white house. “Mom! Jared!” she called. Jared was her older brother, but he wasn’t home very often. He was pretty popular in the high school and was often doing something with his jock friends.
She got no answer from her mom or brother. She shrugged and dumped her backpack on the floor. As soon as she did, she heard the phone ring. Hannah automatically rushed over to the phone and picked it up. “Hello?”
“Hannah? It’s Cassidy! You’ll never guess who I met today!”
Hannah was pretty sure she could guess, but she couldn’t read Cassidy’s mind. I guess it doesn’t work through phones. “Who?” she asked instead.
“I met this kid in our school who can read minds, too! His name is Rick! Isn’t that amazing!”
“That is so cool! I can’t believe that you found someone else like us!”
“Wait… why didn’t you already figure out that I met him?”
“I don’t think it works through phones,” Hannah replied.
“Oh. But I kinda have a problem… you know how I like Alex and he likes me?”
“Yeah…” Hannah said, not completely sure where Cassidy was going.
“Well, I think that Rick likes me, too!” Cassidy squealed happily.
“I think it’s fairest if you just stick with Alex. You’ve known him longer, and you just met this other guy. You can’t be sure if he’s a cree ot.”
“But he knows our secret!”
“Cassidy, it’s only fair.”
“Fine,” she huffed. “See you tomorrow.”
“Bye,” said Hannah, hanging up the phone. As soon as she hung up, the phone started ringing again. “Hello?” she said into the receiver. * *** * * Chapter 13 (Written by pollytoad77) She picked up the note and read it over again and then put it in her secret box she hides under her bed. She thought about Rick and how he was so nice to her. She found herself blushing when she looked in her mirror; did she like Rick? She decided to call Hannah, “Hello?” Hannah asked. “Hannah? It’s Cassidy! You’ll never guess who I met today!” Cassidy said excitedly. They talked and then Cassidy hung up. She didn’t know what to think. “I guess I should take her advice,” she thought a bit unhappily. *** The next day in Art, Alex sat down next to her. She looked up, “Hey,” she greeted. He didn’t say anything so she read his mind, “Nothing, nothing, nothing…” She gave him a confused look. Why was he thinking about literally nothing? Ms. Skye called the class to attention, “I have an important announcement to make!” She said, “We are going to have an Art show!” Everyone began to talk excitedly and she shushed them smiling, “Just paint or draw a picture and we will put them up in the cafeteria and three judges will pick three winners! “The show will be in two days; you all may start on it now,” She finished. Cassidy started immediately, she was concentrating so hard that she forgot about everything else. * *** * * Chapter 14 (Written by pollytoad77) On her way home from school Cassidy spotted Rick standing a stop sign looking as if he was waiting for something. “Hey, Rick!” She called to him; he jumped at his name. When he saw it was Cassidy he quickly acted cool. “Hey, Cass.” “How are you?” Cassidy asked. “Fine.” He lied. Cassidy tried to read his mind but she found she couldn’t. “I – I got to go,” He said abruptly and sped off without another word. Cassidy sighed, “Can my day get any weirder?” she asked the air. “It sure can!” Said a friendly voice; Hannah was striding toward her grinning. “Hannah!” Cassidy said, startled. “Was that Rick you were talking to?” Hannah asked. “Yes,” “Just as I thought!” Hannah said, “I saw him with a group of no good trouble makers,” she thought to her. “You sure?” Cassidy asked. “Positive! They all can read minds and they use it to pull pranks on people.” Hannah thought disgusted, “I saw them huddled in a group just thinking to each other and I overheard what they were saying too.” “What?” Cassidy whispered curiosity. “They are going to spoil the Art Show!” Hannah said out loud. Cassidy’s eye’s widened. “This is bad,” Cassidy said, “Really bad.” “I was thinking we should stop them ourselves.” Hannah said. “Somehow,” she added. “But we should tell Ms. Skye!” Cassidy said looking worried, “Did you hear how they are going to mess it up?” She asked. “No,” Hannah sighed, “One of them saw me so I ran for it; I don’t think they recognized me.” “Ok, let’s go to my house,” Cassidy said, “We need a plan.” **** * * Chapter 15(Written by soccerox7) Cassidy and Hannah sprinted back to Cassidy’s house as fast as their gym sneakers would allow. As they turned down Cassidy’s driveway, Hannah felt the comforting sound of crunching gravel beneath her feet. They dashed through the door and took two steps at a time up the twisting staircase. Cassidy swung open her colorful door and both s collapsed on the purple duvet.
“Why did we run all the way here?” Hannah panted.
“Well, I always feel the need to run in a sense of emergency,” Cassidy shrugged.
“What are we going to do!?” Hannah moaned into a nearby pillow.
Cassidy sat up. “C’mere,” she urged, walking towards the door that Hannah had been wondering about the first time she had come to Cassidy’s house.
Hannah reluctantly followed, not entirely sure of what crazy idea Cassidy had in her head (she seemed to have a lot of those). She was doing a good job of keeping her head clear, lately. Hannah sometimes had trouble tuning into her when she was thinking something she didn’t ant her to know, which hopefully wasn’t much.
Cassidy proudly opened the door and flicked a light switch. “Ta-da!”
Hannah’s mouth dropped open. She was staring into a room about the size of her bedroom at home. The walls were an off-white color, and just about every square inch of three of the four walls were covered in paintings. The third wall had a white board with a colorful array of dry-erase markers, an easel, sketchbooks, pencils, and just about every art tool Hannah could imagine. All of the supplies were neatly organized in a wooden cubby underneath the dry-erase board. Two bean-bag chairs, a wooden stool, a mini-fridge added the final homey touch. It was amazing.
“Are these all yours?” Hannah asked, stepping closer to the paintings.
“Yeah… I have a lot of free time!” Cassidy laughed. Hannah returned a smile.
“Wait, what does this have to do with the problem we have? How is this going to help save the art show?”
“This place,” Cassidy grinned, uncapping a green dry-erase marker, “is also my lair. Let’s get planning!”
The s didn’t know how long they were in there. But when they had finally come up with too many plans to count (some crazy, and even a few just crazy enough to work), Cassidy’s mother knocked on the door.
“Come in,” said Cassidy.
Her mother smiled as she opened the door. “Hi g.irls! Hannah, would you like to stay for dinner?”
“I would lo-” Hannah stopped mid-sentence. A thought suddenly hit her. She knew where she had seen Cassidy’s mom before… Oh. My. Gosh. **** * * Chapter 16 (Written by pollytoad77) “Great!” Cassidy’s mother said still smiling, “I’ll go get it started up now.” She left. Cassidy seemed lost in thought; after a few moments of silence she gasped. “Hannah!” She cried, “I’ve got it!” She got up and hurried over to a table that had a jumble of things on it: paint brushes, crumpled paper towels, post-it notes, a cup of murky water, and a telephone. Cassidy picked up the phone, dialed a number and waited. “Who are you calling?” Hannah questioned. “Alex, of course!” Cassidy thought to her, then she spoke into the phone, “Hi, this is Cassidy, is Alex there? Thank you.” There was a pause where Alex’s mom called him to the phone. “Hello?” “This is Cassidy, I was calling to ask if you could help us, you see there are a group of guys planning to ruin the Art Show unless we do something about it!” There was a silence. “I’m sorry Cass,” “Huh?” “I’m sorry. I – we – I’m part of the group who were going to ruin the show.” “WHAT?!” “Cassidy, listen to me, I told them not t–” “I thought we were friends!” Cassidy cried and then she slammed the phone, hanging up on him. A tear leaked out from the corner of Cassidy’s eye. Hannah rushed over to comfort her. “Boys are so dumb!” Cassidy said furiously, “We’ve got to stop them!” Hannah nodded, “I know…” The doorbell rang. Cassidy walked over to the window and looked down where a person stood waiting to be let in. “Oh, no,” Cassidy groaned, “It’s him!” Sure enough, they heard Cassidy’s mom say, “…she’s upstairs. If you’d like you can stay for dinner.” “Thanks Mrs. Starr!” Alex said. They heard him as he ran up the stairs and into he room. “Cass?” he called. Hannah and Cassidy looked at each other, “Go,” Hannah urged. Cassidy grudgingly walked out of her lair where Alex was looking under the bed for her. “Oh, there you are.” He said straightening up, “Listen, about what I said, I meant to say that I was part of them, but when I found out what they were going to do, I said I wasn’t going to do it and they kicked me out.” He was panting slightly. Cassidy didn’t say anything; she just looked at him with a half glare half smile. “I’m sorry. Will you let me help you?” He asked anxiously, “Please?” he added. Cassidy nodded. “Brilliant, let’s get to work!” He grinned. Cassidy smiled, unable to help herself, he looked so cute. She led him into her lair and they set to work and finally, after working an hour and a half (and eating dinner), they came up with the perfect plan. “We’ll set this into action as soon as it’s time.” Alex said as he was about to leave, don’t forget to keep your mind clear when your around one of them, or else they’ll find out our plan.” “We will,” Hannah and Cassidy said in unison. Alex smiled at them and turned to leave, “Bye!” “Bye, Alex.” They both said. “Are you nervous?” Hannah asked Cassidy when they were back in Cassidy’s room. “Yep, are you?” “You bet, I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.” They laughed and went over their plan once more. * *** * * Chapter 17(Written by soccerox7) Hannah and Cassidy paced back and forth nervously in their middle school’s lobby. Hannah ed her knuckles on her left hand in one swift motion. Cassidy bit her thumbnail. “Are you ready?” she asked. Hannah nodded nervously. They walked down the hallway together in search of a teacher. Ms. Rosa, the s’ social studies teacher was the first one they saw gliding down the long hallway. “Ms. Rosa!” Hannah cried. “Yes?” the young, happy teacher said with a grin. "Well..." said Hannah, a little unsure of how to start. Cassidy jumped in to Hannah's aid. "We think that some boys in the school are trying to sabotage the art show," she blurted out. Instead of jumping into action like the s had expected, she frowned. "What evidence do you s have of this?" They hadn't thought about that. "Well, erm..." "I'm sorry g!rls, but I can't do anything unless you guys have a legitimate problem. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to help set up,"she said and walked off, a cloud of her strong perfume hovering behind her. Cassidy turned to Hannah, her glossed lower lip sticking out in a pout. "That did NOT work," she stated. "What can we do now?" Hannah asked. "Plan B?" Cassidy nodded unsurely. "But I don't really know if this one will work as well as plan A." "It HAS to," Hannah persisted. "First, let's go find out where these boys are." Before she could even take a step, she jumped a foot in the air at the feeling of a hand on her shoulder. She spun around to come face-to-face with Alex. Before Hannah could muster a "hey", Cassidy wrapped her arms around him in a tight bear hug. "I'm SO glad you came!" she squealed. "Hey, I couldn't miss helping out my friends. Besides, I fell responsible for not telling you guys sooner," she said with a smile showing off his white grin. Hannah had the feeling that butterflies were bubbling up in the pit of Cassidy's stomach. "S'okay" said Cassidy with a big lovestruck smile. "Um, guys, sorry to interrupt, but we have an art show to save!" said Hannah, raising her fist to the air. "Well, do you know where the boys are that are trying to ruin the show?" Cassidy asked Alex, not looking away from his eyes. "I saw them by the courtyard a little earlier. They had these boxes... I think it might have been of black spray paint." Hannah groaned, "I had a feeling that this would happen..." Cassidy picked at her thumbnail. "How could I have trusted Rick? I feel terrible." "It's not your fault," Alex told her reassuringly. She happily believed him. Out of the corner of her eye, Hannah saw three boys dressed in all black run by. "Oh no..." * * * * * * Chapter 18 (Written by pollytoad77)
“It’s them,” Hannah whispered. Hannah and Cassidy exchanged worried looks. “Let’s go before we’re too late.” Alex said impatiently, “He should be here soon.” He said the last words mostly to himself. “Who?” Cassidy questioned him. “Bryce, of course.” He said like they should have known, but then he remembered. “Oh! I forgot to tell you: Bryce is helping us stop the bad guys.” He winked. Hannah looked thrilled, “Really? Do you guys know each other?” She asked. “Yeah,” Alex said, “We’re on the same soccer team.” Cassidy looked over at Hannah. “Omg!Omg!Omg!” Hannah was thinking as she checked her reflection in a mirror hanging on the wall. Cassidy grinned; then there was a shout as Bryce came running down the hallway. “I just saw them! They’re hiding in the supplies closet getting ready to do it!” He saw Hannah and smiled warmly at her. Hannah blushed. “Let’s go,” Cassidy said, starting forward down the hall, the others following behind. When they reached the Art Show area they split up; Cassidy and Alex: heading to the Principal’s office, and Hannah and Bryce: hiding behind a big canvas to catch them in the act. Hannah pulled out a digital camera that she barrowed from Cassidy and held it readily in her hand. Cassidy gave a quick look back, catching Hannah’s eye; she gave her a t.humbs up. When they reached the Principal’s office they paused outside the door. Cassidy started rubbing her eyes, making them water and turn red. “Good?” She asked Alex. “Yeah…” They held each other’s gaze for longer then normal. Cassidy turned suddenly towards the door, her face turning pink. They entered. The Principal’s secretary looked up from her work and asked, “What brings you here? Shouldn’t you be at the Art Show?” “We need to see Mr. Rodney, the Principal.” Alex told her. “It’s important!” Cassidy added pretending to cry. “Is there something wrong?” She asked. “We have to talk to the Principal.” Alex said again. The lady looked annoyed but she nodded, walking over to the Principal’s door, knocked once and said, “There are two students that want to see you, Mr. Rodney.” “Show them in,” Came a calm voice. The secretary ushered them in and closed the door behind them. “Can I help you?” Mr. Rodney asked politely. He was wearing a comfortable suit and tie; he was balding and he wore glasses. There was a laptop on his desk, which was very organized, and he had a cup of coffee in his hand. Cassidy started letting out fake sobs, “Oh, Mr. Rodney! This is horrible! You must help us!” She flopped into a chair and looked at Alex, awaiting his line that they had rehearsed. “The Art Show is going to be ruined by a bunch of bullies, sir.” Alex said honestly. Cassidy stared at him. He wasn’t going by the plan! They were supposed to pretend Hannah had broken her ankle in the hall; and because they knew Mr. Rodney was a former doctor, they thought he would be convinced. They were also going to say the school nurse was at lunch. The Principal look amused. “Ah, yes, Ms. Rosa has told me your suspicions, but I can assure you that it will be just fine.” He took a sip of his coffee and set it back on his desk. “Mr. Rodney, you don’t understand!” Cassidy said angrily, forgetting that she was supposed to be crying, “All those paintings and drawings, that have had a lot of effort put into them, will be ruined! How can you just let this happen?!” “Miss Starr, I am very sorry but you are mistaken. The school has security cameras that are manned everyday; if there are any disturbances then we will know.” “But-” Cassidy started to retort. “You are dismissed.” Mr. Rodney said firmly. “Mr. Rodne-” “I said you are dismissed!” He said furiously. Cassidy glared at him then grabbed Alex’s hand and pulled him out of the room. “How could he?” She said with annoyance as they hurried down the hall. She rounded on Alex, “And why did you tell him the truth?” They stopped. “Well,” he looked embarrassed, “I think it’s just best to tell the truth.” Cassidy stared at him then, noticing they were still holding hands, she let go. They stood there awkwardly when they heard a shout. Cassidy looked up sharply, surprised and terrified at the same time. “No!” she gasped. * * * * * * Chapter 19(Written by soccerox7) Hannah gasped in as she watched black spray paint make contact with her painting. Angry black clouds suddenly filled the robin's egg blue sky and lush green mountains of her landscape. With a single gentle press on the top of a can, her artwork was ruined. "STOP!" she screamed as she ran towards the three boys dressed in all black. They took one glance at the three of them speeding towards them like a hungry lion after its prey and scrambled down the hallway.
The boys were a tough match for their speed, but they slowly gained on them as they zoomed through hallway upon hallway filled with artwork. To Hannah's relief, her painting had been the only one that they had managed to touch. "Stop!" Hannah screamed again , in an attempt to get them to halt. Hannah couldn't make out exact words in their thoughts, but she could feel their panic and their rebellious thought energies in her own head.
Suddenly, a blur of blond hair and soccer attire began to sprint down the hallway after the troublemakers in the opposite direction. They screamed and turned the other way, only to run into Alex, Cassidy and Hannah. Four hallways from where they had started, everyone collided and toppled into a big heap on the ground.
They spotted Mr. Rodney and Ms. Rosa ran briskly down the hallway towards them. "What is going on here?" asked Ms. Rosa.
Forgetting the manners that she should have towards authoritative figures, Hannah blurted out, "we TOLD you!"
"Excuse me?" Ms. Rosa asked, furrowing her brow in confusion.
The blond-haired soccer clothes- wearing cutie that had helped them stop the troublemakers stood up and grinned. Bryce, Hannah thought with a smile. "These three punks over here were trying to sabotage the art show. They already destroyed Hannah's beautiful landscape portrait. There's no doubt that she put a lot of effort into that painting, and these guys totally ruined it."
Hannah blushed. My artwork is beautiful, she thought with a smile.
"Is this true?" asked Mr. Rodney, tapping his foot angrily.
The tallest of the three boys stuttered in their defense. "Well, I- uh...we, erm..."
"Do you realize that what you did could get you into a lot of trouble?" Ms. Rosa asked sternly.
"Vandals like you..." Mr. Rodney muttered under his breath, the last part of his sentence inaudible.
"You three are coming with us," said Ms. Rosa, pointing a stern finger at the three boys dressed in black. Satisfied, the four friends happily watched them walk down the hallway. Hannah grinned bigger than ever as Bryce slid his arm around her waist. Hannah could feel his happy thoughts and felt twice as happy herself. * * * * * * Chapter 20 (Written by pollytoad77) Cassidy let out her breath in a rush of air and smiled, “We did it.” She stated breaking the silence, “We saved the Art Show.” Apparently Hannah and Bryce weren’t listening; they had eyes only for each other and were staring deeply into them. Then Cassidy heard Bryce whisper something into Hannah’s ear. She squealed with joy and wrapped her arms around him and kissed him. Cassidy smiled. She was happy for her best friend. “I guess we’ll see each other next year then, huh?” Alex said casually. Cassidy turned to look at him. “Huh? Why?” She asked. “Well tomorrow is the last day of school.” He said with a crooked smile. “Oh…” She said softly. She paused awkwardly, “Well we don’t have to wait till next year to see each other, do we?” “Well no, but-” “You will visit me and call me, won’t you.” She took a step closer to him. “Sure.” He said as he took her into his arms, “Everyday if you want me to.” There was a loud shriek as a seventh grade g.irl came running down the hallway and as the rest of the seventh grade came running just behind her. Cassidy pulled away from Alex and heard the g.irl shriek again; this time she heard what she said. “Look! It’s the Art Show Heroes!” She yelled at the top of her lungs as she slowed to a stop. The rest of the seventh grade erupted into cheers and they all gathered around the four of them. They started chanting “Heroes! Heroes! Heroes!” and they lifted each of them onto their shoulders and carried them to the cafeteria still chanting. “Heroes! Heroes! Heroes!” When they set them down in the cafeteria, Mr. Rodney cleared his throat in the microphone and spoke. “Settle down, settle down. I have couple announcements to make.” He smiled as the school took a seat. “Now as you all know, tomorrow is the last day of school.” Some of the school groaned, while the others cheered. “And in a few moments Ms. Rosa shall announce the winners of the Art Show, but right now I’m going to say a few things.” He paused for a breath then continued. “First off, I would like to congratulate Hannah Fisk, Cassidy Starr, Bryce Harris, and Alex Marker on saving the school’s Art Show.” Cheers erupted again and Mr. Rodney held up his hands for silence, “Not only did they save the Art Show, but they also caught three vandals we’ve been trying to catch for months. They have been spray painting school property and causing a lot of damage around here. Let’s give it up for our four heroes.” The clapping was deafening. Hannah and Cassidy grinned at each other. “And now for Ms. Rosa to announce the winners of the Art Show!” He finished and he handed the microphone to Ms. Rosa. Ms. Rosa smiled and said, “Fifth place goes to Susan Winters!” People cheered and screamed as Susan ran up to the stage to receive her 5th place ribbon. “Fourth place goes to Amelia Johnson!” More cheers and Amelia made her way up to the stage. “Third place goes to Steven Brown!” Cheers and hoots rang through the cafeteria as he ran to the stage, grinning. “Second place goes too….” Hannah crossed her fingers. “Cassidy Starr!” Cassidy beamed as she ran up to the stage to receive her ribbon. “And fist place goes to…..” it seemed the whole school was holding its breath. “Hannah Fisk!” The whole schooled cheered again, but this time even louder. “M-me?” Hannah stuttered, aghast. “You.” Bryce said, smiling. He squeezed her hand and pushed her toward the stage. Hannah walked dreamlike toward the stage and when she took the ribbon she just stared at it. “But I never win anything…” She said, still in amazement. “Oh, Hannah!” Cassidy ran up to her and hugged her. “I’m so happy for you!” “Cassidy, my painting was ruined by those guys! How could I win?” Hannah asked. Ms. Rosa, who walked up behind them, answered her, “Because, dear, I took a picture of each painting submitted in the Art Show and the picture I have of yours is still beautiful and untouched.” Hannah hugged Ms. Rosa and then Hugged Cassidy with tears in her eyes. “Thank you so much!” she cried. Then she whispered into Cassidy’s ear, “I have something important to tell you!” She giggled. “What is it?” Cassidy asked. “Later,” Hannah said quietly. They both saw Bryce and Alex coming toward them. This day couldn’t get better. Later at Cassidy’s house, Hannah and Cassidy were sitting on Cassidy’s bed talking. “So,” Cassidy asked, grinning, “What’s the news?” Hannah giggled and blurt out, “Bryce asked me to be his g.irlfriend!” Cassidy gasped and said, “Awesome! Congrats!” they hugged. “What about you?” Hannah asked, her eyebrow raised. “What about what?” Cassidy asked. “Did Alex ask you?” “No…” Cassidy said looking down, she just realized it now. Did he really like her? “Oh.” Hannah frowned, “Well don’t worry, he will soon enough.” “Really?” “Really.” “G.irls?” Came a voice from outside Cassidy’s door. “Yeah, mom? Cassidy asked. Her mothered entered the room, “Dinner is ready.” She smiled sweetly at Hannah. Then it hit her. Hannah stood up quickly and said, “Mrs. Starr, can I ask you something?” “Sure,” “I’ve seen you before, like before I met you….something in my memory remembers….” She trailed, unsure of what she was saying. Mrs. Starr chuckled, “Well when you were a tiny little thing, your mother brought you to me to check you out. I was a therapist at the time and you seemed to have the same symptoms as Cassidy.” “Symptoms?” Cassidy asked, curiously. “Both of you claimed of ‘hearing voices’ when you really were hearing thoughts. If a child has it then the child would show signs at the age of seven. Seven years later, at the age of fourteen, you would truly be able to read minds, but then once you turn fifteen, you lose this ability.” “What? Once we turn fifteen we won’t be able read minds anymore?!” Hannah asked. “Pretty much.” Mrs. Starr said, “Anyway, hurry down to eat before the food gets cold.” And she left. “I was just getting use to this ‘mind reading’ thing.” Cassidy sighed, then she stood up and Hannah did too. “At least those trouble makers that ruined the art show won’t be able to read minds anymore, because their birthdays are also coming up real soon.” Hannah said, smiling. Cassidy grinned, “Best friends,” “Forever,” Hannah finished and they high-fived. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The End. (Of this book.
