Hope you like it! Chapter 1 You are the chosen one.
That crumpled piece of paper was all Allison Maria Blake Hanson could think about as she walked down the hallways of Teaka High School. The thin paper’s ink was smudged from all of the times Ali had ran her fingers over the typed letters. The bubbly, but not too popular, dirty blonde haired girl wasn’t her usual, bouncy self that day, and her friends definitely noticed. As her pale green eyes scanned the hallways, it seemed as if the walls were closing in on her, narrowing until they would close on her and only her.
The sophomore’s head snapped up when her best friend since the fourth grade, Jenna, nudged her. Ali snapped out of the whir of thoughts she had been stuck in when Jenna nudged her a second time. Giving a weak fake-smile when she noticed Jenna’s worried look, she asked, “What? You’re acting like I’m a totally different person!” She could tell Jenna wasn’t buying her fake enthusiasm by the eye roll and sarcastic smile.
“That’s because you’re acting like it! What’s the matter with you?” Jenna’s chocolate brown eyes scanned Ali up and down, as if searching for something that might have set off the unusual behavior of hers. The girl nudged her, as if to spill the words out of her friend.
Ali shook her head and shied away from the nudge. She made sure to keep the thin pink smile on her face as she stared at her feet and walked down the tiled hall. “Nothing. I swear. We could even hang out at the mall this afternoon if you wanted.” She looked back up at her brown haired friend and shrugged, as if pushing the conversation away. “So do you want to?”
Jenna just blinked, walking alongside her. “Um…” she pressed her lips together and nodded slightly, still obviously worried about her friend. She shrugged as well before answering. “Sure.” She looked at Ali with a thin smile.
Ali was just about to reply when the loud, obnoxious ringing of the school’s bell warned them to get to class. She just waved with her free hand before running to math class.
~
Ali still couldn’t get the note out of her mind. Her fingers pressed against the paper in her pocket, fidgeting with it nervously. She could barely pay attention to Mrs. Lindor, who’s high pitched voice carried through the room like a sharp needle poking through thick wool. Then at lunch, she chewed on her bland burger without talking. Jenna and the other kids in her lunch group just watched her, their eyes practically bugged out in surprise that their friend was quiet.
After lunch, Ali didn’t come up with a nasty comeback like usual when the popular girls made fun of her. She just shrugged and turned away, and the girls’ laughter died off quickly when they saw that their remarks hadn’t caused the usual trouble. They just started jabbering on about a secret admirer who had sent the “leader” of the group had gotten.
Her mind just wasn’t in the right place. The thoughts she had kept drifting to the letter that was stuck in her pocket. She hadn’t told anyone, because she knew anyone who she told would think she had gone mad. All Ali did was quietly hide in her thoughts like a turtle did in it’s shell. That is, until Jenna bugged her for just about the billionth time.
“Jenna I told you I’m alright! Why do you always jump to conclusions like that?” Ali practically snapped at her friend.
“Hey, I’m just wondering what’s up!” Jenna said defensively. “Geez. It’s like some alien abducted the real you and replaced you with some really realistic robot!” She laughed quietly and shook her head, flicking Ali on the shoulder playfully.
Ali groaned and threw her head back, but she forced a laugh out as well. It’s probably just a prank, she thought to herself. Of course it is! That has to be it! She giggled to herself, and that seemed to satisfy Jenna.
~
As Ali walked in to her next class, she slipped the paper out of her pocket, crumpled it in her fist, and tossed it casually in the trash can. Luckily, Jenna was already in her seat. Ali dropped her books onto the desk next to Jenna and practically fell in her seat, wanting the school day to just be over already. She was ready to get her mind off of the note by shopping with her best friend. As Ms. Gonzalez yammered on about pronouns, Ali drifted off into her thoughts again. More remembering than thinking this time.
Earlier that morning, Ali had ran out to her mailbox, wanting to get to the bus stop soon so that she wouldn’t miss the bus again. She swung open the door of the mailbox and sifted through the letters. Bill… bill… bill… magazine… Wait a minute. She took a long, white envelope out of the stack, shoving the rest of the junk into the small compartment. She flipped the letter over and over, trying to figure out where it had come from. It had her full name on it. Allison Maria Blake Hanson. Nobody knew Ali’s full name except close family. As she pondered this, she slit open the envelope with her long, black thumbnail. She hoped it was from her grandparents.
Practically jumping with excitement, she yanked the top of the envelope open, only to find a small sliver of paper inside of it. She curiously took it out and unfolded it, freezing when she read the neatly computer-typed note. When the smoky rumbling sound of the school bus hit her ears, she shoved the paper into her pocket and ran to the corner to get to school.
~
Her skin prickled when she snapped out of her memory. A piece of paper laid in front of her, luckily Jenna had been filling it in for her as well as herself. Ali touched Jenna’s hand in a thanking way, then started filling the “activity” sheet out.
What are pronouns? Words that replace nouns and proper nouns.
Why are pronouns important? So that you don’t have to keep repeating the pronoun.
Give some examples of pronouns: She, he, we, I
The questions went on like that until the long Clang! Clang! Clang! sound of the school’s bell sounded. The class set their papers on Ms. Gonzalez’s desk and rushed out of the door in one big mob. Ali was in the back of the mob, walking next to Jenna, when Ms. Gonzalez called her back. “Ali?”
Ali sighed and looked at her teacher. “Yes?”
“Come here for a second, I need to ask you something.”
Ali looked at Jenna and waved her away before walking briskly towards her teacher. “Is it about my grades?” she asked, not sure of what her teacher wanted.
“No, no, you’re fine. With your grades anyways. But are you feeling alright? You seem a little… quiet.”
“Ms. Gonzalez, I really need to get to the bus ramp,” she said, walking out of class quickly so that the teacher couldn’t hold her back any longer.
“What was that about?” Jenna asked. Ali could tell by the way Jenna was leaning against the wall that she had been trying to listen in.
“Um… my grades,” she lied, shrugging and taking long strides towards her locker. Jenna skipped after her to keep up.
“Sure it was,” she said sarcastically, rolling her eyes. When Ali stayed quiet, she decided to change the subject. “So we’re still on for the mall right?”
“Of course,” Ali replied, spinning her combination on her locker. 5... 9... 32... Wait, that’s my gym locker. 7... 23... 2... No, that’s my band locker. Uh…
Jenna groaned and spun the three numbers in. 15, 0, 11. The locker popped open, and she smirked to her friend. “And I have you do my locker.” Jenna laughed and shook her head, spinning in the combination of her locker as well. Shoving the books in her backpack, she spoke again. “So what stores this time? Lillie’s?” Jenna peered at Ali with big eyes, hoping the answer would be yes. That was her favorite place ever, though it wasn’t exactly the top designer place.
Ali let out a quiet “Sure,” and swung her bag over her shoulder carelessly. The books shook, and as she bent down to pick up a loose paper she dropped, she looked at her shabby cell phone for the time. When she saw that when it was about ten minutes until the end of school, she stood and faced her homeroom. Ali looked back at Jenna and nodded, then headed back to her homeroom to see if her bus was at the bus ramp or not.
Jenna watched after her, then followed a few steps behind. She turned around in the doorway when she saw Ali coming towards her. She could tell that their bus was up since Ali smiled and nodded.
The 15 year old walked quickly down the hall and practically leaped down the stairs. She grinned back at Jenna, more enthusiastically than before. Ali had done a pretty good job of convincing herself that the note was a prank. She watched the view above her change from ceiling to dusky gray sky. Looking back at Jenna, she jogged towards the bus and skipped up the stairs of it.
Jenna, confused but satisfied, came up behind her. She looked down the long row of crammed seats, taking the one behind the one Ali sat in.
Thunk! Ali made a face when a French fry hit her straight blonde hair. Smirking, she took it out and threw it back at the jerk who had thrown it. She laughed when the soda that the senior was holding splattered all over him, but she stopped when his sharp blue eyes stared at her in warning. Pressing her lips together, she leaned over the seat to whisper to Jenna.
Jenna looked at the senior and giggled. She flipped her hair and turned back to Ali, whispering, “He’s cute!” The two pressed their lips together to suppress their giggles, and Ali quickly turned around when the bus driver gave her a stern look.
~
When they were dropped off at the mall by Ali’s mom, the girls ran inside, excitedly. Before walking into the store, they stood outside to take in the big posters. 50% OFF ALL T-SHIRTS AND ACCESSORIES! She turned to Jenna and squealed with her before settling down and walking casually inside.
Ali flipped through a row of T-shirts while Jenna put her hair in different styles with Lillie’s signature hair bows. She giggled at a funny style, the high pitched ring carrying through the room like sweet music. She swung around to face Ali, the three pigtails whipped around with her head.
Ali burst into giggles as well and shook her head. She found a cute hot pink tee and held it up to her. “What do you think?”
~
The dusty blue sedan pulled away from Jenna’s driveway and headed back towards the Hanson’s house. Mrs. Hanson looked back at Ali in the car mirror, eyeing her daughter curiously. “Are you alright? You seem a little quiet today…” she said with a meaningful smile. Ali hadn’t gossiped as much with Jenna as they usually did during the car ride.
“Mom, everyone’s been asking me that all day! I swear I’m fine. Just… tired.” Ali smiled. It wasn’t a total lie. She was a little tired from walking around the mall and carrying three bags of clothes. The girl shrugged and put her bony elbow on the window’s ledge, watching the trees fly by as her mom drove quickly past them.
“Oh, I almost forgot,” said Mrs. Hanson as they pulled into their own driveway. “You got a letter in the mail today.”
“I got it this morning,” Ali said quickly.
“No, no. Tim rang the doorbell and handed it to me at around noon. He said he must have looked over it. It’s inside on the counter.” She smiled back at her daughter, not knowing that she was worried at all.
Ali gave a weak smile and ran out of the car into the house. She swung open the door, barely nodding to her small tortoiseshell cat, Cindy. Her fingers trembled slightly at her sides, so she started picking at the black nail polish.
“Aren’t you going to open it?” Ali’s mom asked, handing the envelope over to her. The worried looked in her mom’s hazel eyes were convincing.
“Later.” Ali spoke casually, as if nothing was wrong. She smiled faintly once more and slipped the envelope out of her mother’s hand. She bounced up the stairs and slit open the envelope as she had the first time.
~::*::~::*::~::*::~::*::~::*::~::*::~::*::~::*::~ Chapter 2 Don’t tell anyone; you’ll regret it. Of course she wouldn’t tell anyone! Ali stared at the paper, a blank look on her face. She shook her head and tucked the note into her pillow case to ponder later. She knew, though, that she wouldn’t be able to get the note out of her head again. It was a blank envelope with only her full name on it, just like the first time. The piece of paper was just a small sliver of a regular sheet with neat, computer-typed letters also like the other note. She sighed and laid on her black and pink comforter, staring up at the ceiling. Her head rested against the palms of her hands as she laid there, deep in thought. Mrs. Hanson peeked in the door of Ali’s room. “Ali?” she asked cautiously. “Are you alright? It’s only seven and you’re already in bed!” She quietly walked over and sat at the corner of Ali’s bed, laying her hand on her daughter’s knee comfortingly. “Yeah mom. I told you I’m tired. When will dinner be ready?” “That’s what I came up to tell you. You’re father came home with dinner from Firehouse Subs. He brought your favorite.” “The Italian one?” she said excitedly, sitting up. Mrs. Hanson smiled, glad her daughter was at least acting enthusiastic. “Yep. He knows you so well,” she said with a soft, motherly laugh. She patted her daughter’s knee and got up, heading back downstairs to the kitchen. Ali followed her. The sweet smell of honey ham and zesty sauce filled her nose as she drew closer to the lovely dinner. Her kitten, Cindy, pawed at her, and she bent down to give the cat a small scruff on the neck. “Dad!” she cried happily when she saw her father. Mr. Hanson embraced his daughter in a big bear hug. “Hey, kiddo,” he greeted. “It’s good to see you.” He had been gone on a trip for work, and he was finally back after two weeks of confidential meetings and such. “Why did you have to go for so long?” she asked. Mr. Hanson’s fair-haired daughter looked up at him with a sweet smile. “Well, you know. The government is always needing something.” He gave a hearty chuckle and led Ali to the dining table where the subs waited for her. ~ Ali woke up the next morning in a good mood. She smiled to herself, glad that her dad was finally home. He wouldn’t have to leave for another few months now. All he had to do was work four days a week, but he’d be home at around 6:30pm each day. She hopped out of bed and slid open her mahogany wood drawers to find the clothes she had bought the day before. Grabbing the pink zebra striped shirt and jeans to go with it, she dressed and went to the bathroom to brush her hair and teeth and get a shower. After she was ready, she took her flip cell phone and stuffed it in her pocket before she ran out to the bus stop. Both of her parents were already at work, so she had put Cindy in her room. With her book bag laying on the ground next to her, Ali leaned against the street sign as she waited for the bus. There were two others at her bus stop, but they were twins, absorbed in their own little twin-world. Jenna didn’t ride her bus either. She only did every once in a while in the afternoons. Ali had no one to talk to while she waited, and she shoved her hands deep in her pockets. Her green eyes peered down the street at the other bus stop, looking for the rusty yellow bus to come. ~ When Ali got off the bus, she ran towards the building where Jenna was walking in the door. “Jenna!” she called as she jogged up next to her friend. “Hey,” her friend greeted, nudging Ali with a grin. “Are you yourself today?” “Look at me,” she said, stopping to spin around. “Do I look like Ali?” “Well you looked like Ali yesterday too!” Jenna protested with a smile. “Well today I’ll act like her as well. I promise,” Ali said with a laugh, running up the stairs of the high school. When she reached her locker, she turned to Jenna’s and did her combination for her like usual. Then she walked across the hall to her own locker and opened it as well. Jenna smiled and the two friends took their stuff out of their lockers. She waved to Ali as she headed towards math. Ali nodded and struggled to carry her books. Closing her locker with her shoulder, she headed to civics. In the hallway, the senior who had spilled the juice on himself on the bus passed her. With a smirk, he “bumped” into her, making Ali drop her books and papers. Her stuff scattered all over the hallway and people stopped to watch and laugh. Ali could feel the color burning in her cheeks as she bent down, no one was there to help her. The “leader” of the popular group, Bella, laughed, making snobby jokes as her and her group watched. “Clutz,” she sneered, turning away to class when the bell rang. Gathering her stuff, Ali walked towards her class. The only person who lingered by her when the bell rang was a skinny boy, but she didn’t notice him. He looked at her curiously and then shrugged, slipping into the classroom door that he stood next to. ~ The rest of the day went by quickly. Ali wanted to get home so that she could get the note out of her pillow. She had accidentally left it there that morning in her rush to get ready. Her fingers tapped her knees as she sat in Ms. Gonzalez’s room, waiting for class to be over. She wanted to figure out what the note meant, if it meant anything. Jenna flicked Ali’s arm, trying to get her friend to snap out of her thoughts. “Ali, you’re acting funny again…” she warned. Ali looked over and smiled faintly. Deciding to try to get Jenna to believe she was fine, she started murmuring to her about what had happened between Amber and Jim that day in science. Suddenly, the bell rang, and Ali jumped out of her seat. She grabbed Jenna by the arm and paced out of the room so that Ms. Gonzalez wouldn’t hold her back again. Laughing, the two girls ran towards Ali’s homeroom. Both of the girl’s buses were on the soft pulled-down projector screen. Backpacks in hand, the two continued their conversation they had had in language and went down the stairs quickly. ~ When the bus screeched to a stop, Ali quit her back and forth name-calling conversation with the senior and ran off of the bus. She had obviously lost the name-calling talk, and she wanted to get away from him and to the note as fast as possible. Apparently, the senior’s name was Austin. As she walked up to her driveway, she opened the mailbox’s thick metal door and sifted through the letters, looking for a plain white envelope. Good, the mysterious envelope wasn’t there. She walked into the house and dropped her bag on the floor. “How was your day?” Mrs. Hanson asked. The heavy stench of sauerkraut filled the air in the house, and Mrs. Hanson was preparing the sausage to go with it since it would take a while to cook. “Fine,” Ali said simply. She really didn’t want to have her mom home from her part-time job so early. At least not that day. “I um.. I’m going to get Cindy,” she called over her shoulder, already heading up to her room. Her mom just nodded and continued cutting up the sausage. When she got to her room, she picked Cindy up in her skinny arms, petting the cat just under her ears. Cindy purred, and Ali walked over to her twin-sized bed. Something wasn’t right though… Ali looked over her bed, and immediately realized it wasn’t made like it was that morning. Come to think of it, her whole room was a mess! It hadn’t been like that before! Heart thumping, she looked at her pillow, and there was the note. It had different writing on it though. She sat Cindy on her bed and picked up the sliver of printer paper. Flipping it over, she saw the same words printed on it as they had been the day before, but on the side that had been facing up was a hand scribbled message. Earlier that day it had only said Don’t tell anyone, you'll regret it. But now, on the back the message was continued, and Ali’s green eyes ran over the sloppy writing several times.
Especially your father.
Chapter 3 Ali’s hands were shaking. Obviously somebody had searched long and hard for the note while her parents were at work. They didn’t do a good job of cleaning though, so they must’ve not cared if they were known.
Or maybe they did. Ali had no clue about what to do. She shook her head, putting her head in her hands as she sat at her small wooden desk that her uncle had made her. She didn’t know if she should cry because she was scared, or laugh because she was going crazy. Should she tell her parents? Her thoughts drifted to what the second part of the note said. “Especially your father.” She shuddered when she thought of it. Her green eyes, now sparked with fear, looked wearily towards where she had put the note. On the bed beside her mattress. Figuring it was best to get away from the room, she stood up and ran down to the basement. There she could watch TV to get her mind off of the notes and not have her mother hovering over her. As she plopped down on the couch, Cindy made a dainty leap onto her lap. She smiled and laid against the armrest, petting the cat happily. Ali took a deep breath, reminding herself to calm down. Taking the small remote in her hands, she pressed the power button and changed the channel to watch her favorite game show. ~ When she headed back upstairs for dinner, Ali made sure her face wasn’t red from the tears that had started welling up in her eyes. She gave them one last rub and sat in her spot at the wooden table. She ran her fingers through her hair out of stress, and ate quickly when her mother sat the sausage and sauerkraut in front of her. Ali twirled the sauerkraut around her fork and stabbed the utensil in the juicy sausage, stuffing her mouth with a lot at a time. Her parents laughed when they saw her eat so quickly. “Wow Ali, what a pig you are tonight!” Mr. Hanson joked, poking her in the ribs with a laugh. Ali tapped her dad’s hand and smiled, finishing her food quickly. She didn’t talk for the rest of dinner, afraid she’d give something away. When she finished, she kis.sed her mom and dad and put cleaned her dishes. Ali ran down the basement stairs quickly and watched TV until her parents called her up for bed. ~ The next morning was Saturday. Ali smiled to herself and stretched, looking at her clock for the time. Wow, she must have really needed some sleep. It was already 1:00 in the afternoon! She shook her head at herself and got dressed in dark blue jeans and a hot pink, short sleeved T-shirt. The sweet smell of banana bread filled her freckled nose as she pattered down the stairs. Grinning, she rushed into the kitchen and cut herself a piece. As she ate, she listened to the small clanks and reels that came through the window as her parents worked outside. When she finished, she slipped on her small shoes and went around to the back of the house where her parents were working on the yard. As she stepped outside, the dusky smell of leftover rain from the night before swirled through the wind. She looked up at the new, refreshed blue sky and grinned. Ali ran across the yard to her friend, Stephanie’s, house. Stephanie was the only kid in her neighborhood, and the two got together every weekend. She rang the doorbell, and the loud ringing of it filled the house so loudly that Ali could hear it from outside. Stephanie swung open the door almost immediately. “Ali!” the skinny girl with green eyes exclaimed, clearly excited. “I was just calling you! Come here!” Her sweet, bubbly voice was high pitched and jumpy, and Ali new something big must have happened. “What is it?” Ali asked, carefully stepping inside and looking around. The last time she was this excited was that her baby cousin was coming over, and that had turned out to be a mess. “Okay, I held it in all week and that was unbelievably hard so don’t yell at me and say I didn’t tell you because I wanted to so badly but you’re going to love it when I show…” “Stephanie!” Ali cut her off. “Take a breath.” Stephanie took a deep breath and shook her head, barely laughing. “Alright just… come here!” The girl grabbed Ali’s hand and rushed her into the living room where her baby brother and her mom sat on the couch, cooing at something. “Her name’s Lexi,” she said with a proud smile. Ali bent down to get a closer look at what the center of attention was, and she immediately burst into happy squeals with Stephanie. “Oh my Gosh! I can’t believe you got a puppy!” Ali was practically jumping with excitement. “You can see her,” Stephanie’s mom, Miss Lilly, said. She held up the tiny tan-yellow puppy and gently laid her in Ali’s waiting arms. Ali smiled and stroked the puppy lovingly, it’s small pink tongue moved over Ali’s hand in friendly licks. “She’s so sweet,” she said with a smile. Lexi’s big brown eyes looked at Ali curiously, and she pawed at her, wanting to be petted more. “What breed is she?” Ali asked, holding her close. “Lexi’s a mix between a yellow lab and a fox terrier, but mostly yellow lab. She looks like a yellow lab but she’ll grow up to be about half the size of a real one. She’s only six weeks old right now.” Stephanie scruffed her puppy’s neck and smiled, cooing softly to it. Ali nodded and smiled, doing the same as her friend. “Aw, I can’t believe you didn’t tell me!” the girl exclaimed, amazed that Stephanie’s parents had agreed to what she had been begging for for months on end. She gave a giddy laugh when she saw Stephanie’s bewildered and sarcastic expression. “Hey, holding it in was about 1000 times harder than you even think it was!” she said in a mock-offended way. She couldn’t help but giggle though. “Come here, let me show you around Lexi’s corner!” Stephanie took the puppy and skipped down the hall to the fully finished and furnished basement. She ushered Ali over to the place next to the TV. There was everything a puppy could dream of in that corner. A comfy bed stuffed with ropes, bouncy balls, squeaky stuffed animals, bones… The whole enchilada! Ali grinned. “Well aren’t you a spoiled little thing!” she exclaimed to the puppy. Stephanie tilted her head back and laughed. Her long red hair fell over her neck and in her eyes as she did. ~ Ali didn’t hear of the notes all weekend. The two days breezed by quickly. Ali had slept over at Stephanie’s, and the next day the two invited Jenna over and they hung out outside in the spring air the whole day. You could say she had forgotten about the notes. They had almost completely been erased from her mind. More days passed. No notes. Actually, the days that she did remember them, she found herself looking for them. But they didn’t show up, and she never told anybody. The usually bright, happy Ali was completely back in business. Until the next one came. It almost completely shut her down again. It creeped her out, and made her skin prickle and her body cringe if she thought of it. It was the Thursday of the week after the week that Stephanie got her puppy. Chapter 4 I need to see you, and you need to see me. No. There is no way!
Those were the only thoughts that ran through Ali’s head when she read the note over and over. She crumpled it up, but when she went to shove it in her pocket to take back inside and throw away, she felt something. Pulling out her pockets, she found out there was the stump of a pencil that she had lost last week.
That pencil gave her an idea, and she took the slim piece of paper and spread it across the mailbox. Her neat handwriting smudged with her hand, but you could still make out the words. Why should the person not get a reply? She thought. He or she should know I’m not going to do what he wants. But she didn’t write anything down that might upset the person. She didn’t want him sneaking in her room to make her do what he wanted. Ali just wrote something simple and plain, and something she felt she needed to know. Who are you? Ali decided to wait until the weekend, when her mailman, Mr. Tom, didn’t come. She shoved the paper in her pocket and pushed the whirring thoughts out of her mind for the time being. She was just going to have a fun day with Jess.
At school, the kids had passed around the fact that it was “Chewing Gum Day”. When they talked about it, they just said CGD so that the teachers wouldn’t know. She climbed on the bus and leaned over the seat. There was a girl in front of her famous for gum. “Hey,” she whispered so that the driver didn’t hear. “I need some gum for CGD.”
The girl looked at Ali with amber-gold eyes that sparkled with mischief. “5 bucks,” she said, popping a bubble when the driver started the bus. Ali sighed, then stuck her hand in her back pocket and pulled out half of her lunch money. Ten dollars. She handed it over and the girl gave her two pieces of the new black bubble gum made by 5 Gum. Ali smiled. At least she had gotten good pieces. She shoved the gum in the pocket with the note and pencil and sat back down, proud that she would be included in such a famous kid holiday.
As she walked into class, the teachers seemed to eye every kid that walked by. It was like they had X-ray vision, or eyes in the backs of their heads. One time, her Band teacher had her back turned; she was writing music on the board. A kid way in the back was making faces at her, and no one made a sound. They just looked at each other with a wide smile. All of a sudden, the teacher’s writing changed, and in large capital letters was a message to that kid. TIM WOODWORD, STOP IT NOW.
From then on, no one ever dared to mess with her because they were afraid that she would give out some terrible punishment. Ali wondered how many kids would be chewing gum in her class. She knew she would be. It wasn’t because she wanted to, she just wanted to do it because everyone else was. If the other kids were doing it, she should too, right?
Peer pressure.
That was the thing in her school. If someone else did it, everyone else had to do it as well. They had to do it better. They had to be cool. Almost every student fell for peer pressure’s dirty tricks, and one of those students was Ali. She didn’t do it on purpose, she just did it so she felt more comfortable. But she did it subconsciously. Ali shrugged. Her thoughts always wandered like that. Shaking her head, she hopped off the bus, and the crinkled piece of paper in her pocket didn’t come back into her mind until she went to get a pencil from her pocket.
Hands clammy and brow sweating, she thought of what it had said again. It was hard not to be worried about it, but it was also hard to tell someone. It was sort of… embarrassing. She didn’t want someone thinking she was nuts or that she was someone who was so desperate for attention that she made up crazy stories about people leaving secret notes. Or maybe she just didn’t want the person leaving the notes to find out she had told. After all, the one note had scared her when it said not to tell anyone. And especially her dad. Ali shivered at the memory.
When she walked into the school building, she popped the gum into her mouth when her back was turned to the hall teacher. She chewed it happily, enjoying the sweet, fruity flavor of the gum. She chewed until lunch, and when she went to throw away her wad of sticky goop, she saw a whole pile of gum in there. Apparently, the other students had also taken their gum out so they could eat lunch without difficulty. She just hoped no one would notice until it was to late to punish anyone.
When she walked into science class, every time the teacher turned you could practically hear the smacking and popping of people blowing bubbles and chewing their gum. It almost made her giggle, but she pressed her lips together so that the sound wouldn’t escape her mouth and alert her teacher.
She got through to seventh period, and that’s when the counselor came in. He looked around the classroom. It was time to learn studying techniques. Ali sat at the front of the room, in the right corner that was close to the door. And the trash can. That’s when she was pounced on. “Ali!” Mr. Reynolds practically boomed.
She froze, then looked up at Mr. Reynolds with big, fearful eyes. “Yes?” She almost stuttered. Ali’s hands began to feel clammy like they didn’t when she was really scared, and she gulped hard, making sure not to swallow the gum she had in her mouth. She looked around the classroom, smirks were across many kids’ faces. “You have gum, don’t you?” Ali shifted in her seat and slid the gum under her tongue. She shook her head and curled her eyebrows to look confused. “No…” she said carefully, making sure not to let the gum out from underneath her tongue.
The class snickered to themselves, but Mr. Reynolds rolled his eyes and let her go. Crossing his large arms, he spoke firmly to the class. “You all better get rid of your gum now!” The words practically boomed out of his mouth. His voice was naturally low, but when he shouted, he could be really intimidating. Ali could hear a few people swallow, but no one got up to throw it away.
Mr. Reynolds’ sharp eyes scanned the class before he continued. ~ . . . . .It was Friday night. Ali held the note tight in her fist as she walked out to the mailbox. She told her parents she was taking the trash from the kitchen to the garage. She did do that, but the skinny girl also wanted to put the note out. Ali looked at the note again that she had written. Who are you? it said. Hesitantly, she put it in the mailbox and ran back inside, out of the chilly air. Chapter 5 Who are you? You don’t need to know yet. I have enclosed something for you. Before you throw it away, think very carefully. DON’T ASK .AGAIN
. . .
Ali looked at the note, shaking her head. Why couldn’t she know who he or she was? Couldn’t she at least know his first name? Sifting through her mailbox, she pulled out the regular white envelope. Hands shaking, she pulled out a letter larger than usual. It felt thicker too, not just a regular piece of…
In an instant she knew what it was. Flipping it over and over, she looked for the person’s name who had bought it for her, but no sign of who he was was there. She looked at the picture of the huge airplane with the red tail, and then at the address below it. The place was so far off… even by plane. All of the way across the country to California. Her mouth dropped open.
Ali ran inside that Sunday, straight to her mother’s room. But her mother wasn’t there, and neither was her dad. They had both been called in for work, and they would probably have to work late again. She couldn’t just throw the place ticket away! Picking up the phone, she dialed Jenna’s number.
“What is it?” Jenna asked, sounding worried.
Ali smacked her forehead. She had dialed Jenna’s home phone. They only called each other at home for emergencies. Well, this was sort of an emergency, wasn’t it?
“Sorry… I didn’t mean to dial your home number. I just wanted to see if you could come over.”
“Oh!” she took a sigh of relief and laughed. “Yeah, sure, I just need to give Zach his food.”
“Bring him,” she said, a little too quickly. I could use some pet therapy, she added in her head.
“Um, alright. I’ll be over in about 20 minutes.”
The 20 minutes seemed like forever. It took five minutes for Jenna to feed her large German Shepherd his helping for the morning, and 15 to walk over. Ali found herself pacing in front of the door, shaking her fingers at her sides. She jumped when the doorbell rang.
Peeking through the blinds to make sure it was Jenna, Ali flung open the door. “What took you so long?!” she managed to shout before Zach tackled her. “Blech!!” The large dog licked her face happily.
“Well you said it wasn’t an emergency, and I’m right on time anyways!” Jenna shook her head and laughed, but Ali didn’t laugh along.
“I need to show you something,” Ali said abruptly. Her hand fidgeted in her back pocket as she stood up.
“What?” Jenna sounded excited, and didn’t bother to scold Zach. She just unclipped him from his leash and shooed him into the fenced backyard. He bounded happily after a butterfly.
Jenna chuckled, but stopped when she saw her friend’s serious face. She rolled her eyes.
I’ll show her quickly, just like when you take off a band-aid, Ali thought, and she yanked the plane tickets out of her backpack. Yes, tickets. She had discovered a second one.
“Oh my Gosh!” Jenna squealed, grabbing the tickets and bouncing up and down. A stream of questions flew out of her mouth so quickly that Ali could barely keep up. “Are just you and I going? Where are they too? I’m going right? I mean, that’s why you showed me. Where are we going to stay? How far away is it? Who all is coming? When are we going? Who got them for you?”
Ali slapped Jenna’s shoulders with both of her hands. “They’re all the way over to California. I don’t know how far or where we’d stay, the tickets are scheduled exactly a month from now. No one is going, because some guy I don’t even know got them for me!”
Jenna stopped bouncing and sat down on the dark green corduroy-looking couch. She waited for the whole story.
Holding up her finger, Ali ran upstairs and retrieved all of the notes from the past. When she came back down, Jenna was in the same position. Ali handed her friend the notes one by one, in order from which they came. She told each story about each note, and how she hadn’t told anyone until now.
Ali flinched every time Zach rustled in the bushes, fearing that the guy who sent the notes was watching her. She told Jenna about her thoughts on that too.
Jenna’s eyes widened, softened, her eyebrows raised and twisted, and she started to say something every once in a while, but stopped herself. “…I don’t know what to tell you, Ali,” she said when Ali was finally finished. She hugged her friend who was close to tears of frustration and fear.
“You know what, Jenna?” Ali asked with a sigh. “The worst part is… I’m thinking about going.”
Jenna slapped Ali. “WHAT?! You promised, Ali, remember?” Jenna held up her hand that had their friendship bracelet on it, her pinkie was extended. “You pinkie swore never to leave me. Remember?”
Ali rolled her eyes. “There are two tickets, remember?” She emphasized the last word.
Jenna lit up for a second, but then slapped her friend once more. “No. There is no way I’m letting you do this! Some guy you’ve never met has been leaving you notes, even got to your room one time, and besides - what would you tell your PARENTS? There are other people who wouldn’t want to be left by you as well, you know.”
Ali rolled her eyes. “It was just an idea…” she tried to make herself sound determined and strong to hold her dignity, but she couldn’t look away from her feet and her voice came out soft and muffled.
Jenna scoffed. “Just an idea.”
Throwing the tickets under her dresser, the two friends headed out to take Zach for a long walk. The tickets were slightly visible, peeking out a little from under the wooden dresser.
