Chapter One-
Once upon a time...
Once upon a time there was a girl named Tarah, that's me. Except, my life is no fairy tale. In fact, it is quite the opposite. I live in a rundown house that looks terrible on the outside, and is empty on the inside. My room is in the attic where no matter how warm it is throughout the rest of the house, my room always is cold. It was a couple of weeks after we had moved away from the home that I had loved. I had just started going to a new school in the middle of the semester, not a good combination. Nobody talked to me, or even acknowledged that I was there, except for one girl that had unusually large eyes. She always wore sparkly, lime green glasses. That was one of the many things that made her different from other girls. "Hi!" she said every time I boarded the school bus. I nodded, but said nothing. One time when I was walking home from school, she ran to my side and whispered into my ear, "I need your help." I looked around, startled. She sped off ahead of me and beckoned for me to follow. I ran just to keep up. When I rounded the street corner, she stopped me and peered back to see if anyone was following. Then, she looked me straight in the eyes. "I need your help," she repeated. "Ok?" I replied, unsure of what to say next. "I am a humapegasus; a cross between Pegasus and human. A darky has taken your parents! We must save them!" she said desperately. Now I began to wonder if my life was a fairy tale. I looked at her in alarm. "Are you okay?" I asked. "Yes, I am fine. You must believe me!" she replied, pushing aside my question. "I believe what I see," I answered simply. "Fine!" she said impatiently. I looked at her doubtfully. At that moment, her harms and legs began to grow and hooves took the place of her fingers and toes. Wing tips began to sprout through her back. Her mouth changed into a muzzle and her skin became a pearly white. What stood before me was no longer a strange girl with green glasses, but a majestic Pegasus.
That's chapter one!
Chapter Two-
A Pegasus Friend
“Now do you believe me?” she said in a calm voice that was soothing like cool water. Her voice sounded very different from what it used to be. I stared at her, gaping. She laughed softly, her laugh sounding like ringing bells.
“Trying to get used to the new me?” she asked after seeing that I was in no state to reply. I nodded.
“Well then, if you don't mind, I will change back into my human self,” she said. At these words, her shape began to shift again. Within a few seconds, she was the girl with the green glasses.
“How do you do that?” I whispered.
“Um... I just do it. It runs in the family I guess,” she replied, shrugging her shoulders.
“Why would you tell me all of this?” I asked again.
“Well, you are special,”she answered earnestly. I laughed bitterly at these words.
“Yeah really,” I said.
“You are special. You have a gift that you never knew about, not even your parents. You are a sorcerer. You can preform magic spells at your own will. Most people have to start off as apprentices... but as I said before, you are special.” she said.
“Really? Can I try to cast a spell now?” I said excitedly, my eyes widening in surprise.
“Sure!” she said, happy to see my change of heart, “How about you lift that garbage can in the air. It shouldn't be too hard. Just think about it lifting into air really hard and chant the name of the object over and over again until it does lift in the air. The next part is easy. Just imagine what you want it to do next!” I eagerly accepted her suggestion and went step through step on her instructions. The first time, I only got the garbage can to quiver a little bit. The second time, it rocketed off the ground.
“Wonderful!” she said happily,
“Now, I might as well introduce myself... I'm Melinda, but you can call me Linda.”
“I am Tarah, just Tarah,” I said.
“Not just Tarah! You are Tarah the sorcerer now!” she said warmly.
“Yes, well I guess that too...” I said shyly. Suddenly, Linda's expression changed.
“Your parents! Oh my goodness, I totally forgot! We have to leave NOW. I only just found out that your parents were kidnapped and it seems they have been kidnapped for a couple of days now.”she cried. I furrowed my brow.
“What? I just talked to my parents this morning,” I replied, confused.
“Well, that's a case of darky invasion for you. A darky is a black creature that can shift shapes into whatever it may please. That includes human beings. They must have been watching your family very closely, for them to have shifted so precisely into the shapes of your parents so that even you were fooled!” Linda explained and then tugged at my arm, “Please, we must go now, or it may be too late!”
“All right,” I said, trying to sound brave.
“Have you ever ridden a Pegasus before?” she asked.
“You already know the answer to that!” I said, then added, “I've never believed in mythical creatures until now!”
“Right. Well, you're going to have to try today!” she replied. Linda took a few steps back and within a few seconds, she was a gorgeous Pegasus.
“Promise you'll go slow?” I asked.
“I can only promise as much as time permits. I'd feel awful for the rest of my life if we were too late. My only advice is to hold on tight!” I inched my way onto the Pegasus's back and hugged her neck tightly.
“Are you ready?” Linda asked.
“I think so,” I replied. Linda's wings began to beat back and forth with incredible force. Soon, the two of us were off the ground and soaring through clouds.
Chapter Three-
At the Castle
I don't know how long we flew through the sky. All I know is that it was a wonderful feeling, despite the fact that my parents were in trouble. The sun was setting when I saw turrets on a castle that was ladened with misty clouds.
“What's that?” I called over the whispering of the wind.
“That, my friend, is the Pearl Castle, home of all the white creatures. The Pearl Castle protects us from black creatures,” Linda replied, proudly.
“White? Black? What are you talking about?” I asked.
“White creatures are the good creatures, while black creatures are the bad creatures. Is that a good enough explanation?” Linda said.
“Yup, no more said!” I answered, watching as the Pearl Castle grew closer and closer. Linda soared downward, making my tummy turn over. My hair whipped back as the wind blew in my face. Linda lightly landed on the pearl pathway leading to the door. I hopped off and looked around at my surroundings. It was all so beautiful. Everything seemed to be made of pearl, even the grass surrounding the castle.
“Why did you take me here” I asked Linda as she changed into a human form again.
“You didn't really expect us to go and rescue your parents by ourselves... did you?” Linda said as she pushed aside the pearl door.
“Well...no, but who will be willing to help us here?” I questioned. The two of us hurried inside the beautiful castle. I was suddenly overcome by a feeling of tranquility. I breathed slower and the thoughts that had been swirling around in my head seemed to disappear. Linda apparently had forgotten my question. She too, was calmed.
“It is so...peaceful,” I remarked. A figured descended from the air above. The only word that came to mind was a fairy. The fairy's wings fluttered back and forth in a blur. Her skin was a light purple. When she touched ground she examined both of us and then waved her wand in the air. Immediately, both Linda and I snapped out of it and our thinking was a busy buzz again.
“Queen Ayana!” Linda said excitedly and quickly gave a sweeping bow. I copied Linda and clumsily bowed. Queen Ayana nodded approvingly at both of us and then disappeared, leaving the pathway clear. Without hesitation, Linda strolled onward with me in tow. We wandered through hallways and magnificent rooms decorated with... you guessed it, pearls. Finally, we reached the back of the castle. Outside, we came across the most beautiful garden I had ever seen. Not only were the many flowers beautiful, but the magical creatures that were walking around were also. The unicorns and Pegasuses eyed me curiously. They obviously knew Linda very well, but had not become acquainted with me before. There were fairies everywhere; on the flowers, in my hair, in the air. I couldn't get enough of their delicate beauty. The dwarfs looked at me darkly, whispering among themselves. What's their problem? I thought to myself. One especially short dwarf was brave enough to walk up to us, with his nose in the air.
“What is a human doing here?” he asked, stressing the word 'human'. Linda and I shared a glance, then Linda spoke,
“She isn't just a human, Shorty. Can't you see that she is more than that? I guess your powers are weakening if you can't even realize the truth.” The dwarf's face turned as red as a turnip. He growled.
“Don't you dare call me 'Shorty'! My powers are stronger than you could ever dream of!” he boasted indignantly. He squinted at me, then looked away. He waddled away to his other dwarf friends. He began to whisper to them. They looked at me in awe and I looked at Linda gratefully.
“Is that really his name?” I giggled.
“No, but it sure does fit him!” Linda grinned back. We walked quickly over to a group of Pegasuses.
“Linda! You're here! So nice to see you!” they said excitedly. In a flash, they were just normal girls like us.
“Hey girls! Let me introduce you to my new friend, Tarah. She is a sorcerer who needs our help rescuing her parents from a darky... Do you think you can handle that?” Linda asked eagerly.
“Of course! We haven't had an adventure in ages!” a girl with wispy blond hair replied.
“Then it's set! We have to leave now...immediately,” Linda said, changing into a Pegasus. The other girls followed her actions. I hopped onto Linda's back again and the group flew through the sky, chattering excitedly.
Chapter Four-
Darky Invasion
While flying with the other humapegasus, I got to know all the girls better. The wispy blond haired girl was named Michele. A dark haired girl went by the name Fern. Fern's twin sister was Karly. A girl named Ally had black hair. Ally didn't seem to be as excited about this little mission as the other girls did. She did air tricks at a distance and kept to herself, kind of like I did when I didn't really feel like talking. Linda landed in a peaceful meadow and bent her head with her horse ears pricked forward. The others followed and I jumped off Linda's back. I was alarmed as she seemed to stop moving completely.
“Is she all right?” I asked Karly in a whisper.
“Yes, she is just trying to find the location of your parents,” Karly explained.
“How does Linda know all this stuff? I mean, how does she know that my parents are in danger and how can she figure out the place where they are located? It doesn't make sense!” I replied.
“Oh, but it does make sense if you think about it. Being a Pegasus does have its advantages you know. She can see things that others can't. This only happens rarely though. She probably saw that your parents were in trouble,” Karly said, gazing expectantly at Linda. I looked back at Linda, who was now trotting toward us.
“I got the exact location of your parents! Let's fly!” Linda said triumphantly.
“Wait! Where's Ally?” Fern asked. Everyone looked around, but Ally was nowhere to be seen. A distant cry caught our attention.
“Ally!” Michele shouted. She took off at a full gallop, calling Ally's name over and over again. I began to follow, but Linda blocked my way.
“No,” she said, “This might be a trap. You need to stay here.” I pouted only for a couple of seconds as I watched the humapegasuses gallop and fly away. Linda was right, this could be trap. I lounged on the long grass while I was waiting for them to return. Finally, they did.
“Hey. We couldn't find Ally, but let's go now,” said Linda, looking at me strangely.
“We can't leave Ally behind!” I said.
“No, you must come now,” Fern interrupted, changing into her human form and pulling me to my feet.
“You're kidding, right? She has got to be nearby,” I said stubbornly. Fern pulled harder, forcing me to take a few steps forward.
“Now,” Fern repeated, tugging me toward Linda.
“Why are you guys acting so weird?” I asked, straining just to keep from toppling over.
“Fern! Stop that! She is are friend! That's no way to talk to a friend!” Linda scolded Fern. Fern immediately let go.
“Tarah, I know that Ally can find her way back. You shouldn't be so worried! For now, the only thing we should be concerned about is reuniting you with your parents,” Linda said in a sickeningly sweet voice.
You mean rescue my parents.... I hope. I thought to myself, becoming less and less confident that these humapegasuses would really turn out to be my friends and rescue my parents. I faked smiled to hide the concern I really had.
“I guess,” I said hesitantly.
“Wonderful!” Linda said, smiling broadly, “Then, you can ride on my back!”
“Stop! Stop! Don't trust them! They are darkies!” another group of humapegasuses called, galloping closer to where I stood. The humapegasuses looked just like the Linda and all the other girls that were standing before me. The smiling Linda didn't seem to hear to calls of warning. I backed away as the group of humapegasuses that had been warning me came to a halt at my side. Linda's smile suddenly dropped as she saw the other Linda. The other humapegasuses viewed the copies of themselves in disgust.
“Which of you are my friends?” I cried as both of the Linda's pulled at me urgently.
“We are!” all of the humapegasuses called. The Linda that had just arrived looked pleadingly into my eyes.
“It's a trap! These are darkies!” she said, pointing at the Linda that was on my other side.
“We have to get out of here! You can ride on my back!” the first Linda said, flashing a smile.
“No,” I replied, running into the second group of humapegasuses that I knew were my friends. Ally was among the second group, looking rather flustered. The Michele from the other group snarled and the other darkies gave us dark looks of hatred. Their forms changed into what I only could describe as a patch of what seemed to be the utmost darkest black I had ever seen. They had no significant body parts to them, just being a blob of darkness that sent chills up my back.
Chapter Five- Friends
All of my friends formed a circle around me. They were still in their humapegasus forms when their bodies began to give off a shimmery glow. The darkies cringed at the sudden light and backed away.
- “You have no right to be here!” Linda whinnied, pawing the ground with her hoof. The other humapegasuses nodded in agreement. Suddenly, the darkies disappeared, leaving us alone in the now peaceful meadow again. I was dazed by all that had happened, which was clearly seen on my face. My face had turned a pale white and I stared at the place where the darkies had been only minutes before.
“Are you okay? You don't look so good,” Michele remarked worriedly. I replied,
“Oh, I'm fine. I've just never seen a darky before... I guess. Well, how's Ally?” Ally was the one who answered.
“I'll be all right. It's just....the darkies... they transformed themselves into my parents,” Ally looked down as her lips began to quiver, then she continued, “I... I was foolish enough to believe it was really them after so many years of holding the hope I would actually see them again. They lured me away and took me to one of their nests. There, they changed into my fears and memories...” Ally stopped and bit her lip. Everyone was silent. After a while, Linda cleared the sadness by saying cheerily,
“The important thing is that we have you back now. Do you think you can keep going, Ally? So long of a distance to fly, so little time, you know?” Ally nodded and Linda gave her a reassuring squeeze. Soon, we were off the ground again. I had been flying through the sky so often today that it seemed completely normal now. For a long while we zoomed through darkness. Seeing the blackness, the only thing I could think about was the darkies. Now that they knew we were planning on rescuing my parents from their clutches, they would be ready for when we came. It would also be much more difficult to sneak past them to wherever my parents were hiding if they were told to be on the look-out for us. At last, we landed, but where, I could not say. I willed myself to calm down as I hopped of Linda's back. I was glad Linda and I had not gone to rescue my parents alone.
Ugh! Sorry about that number thing. I don't know what button I pushed, but I can't get it off!
Chapter Six- Penelope
I shivered as the musty air crawled up my skin. The dawn was breaking along the horizon as I looked ahead through the gloom, surprised to see a cheerful, nicely built cottage standing before us.
“What's this?” Fern and Karly asked at the same time. They giggled and rolled their eyes at each other. It was clear to see why they were twins.
“Why, it seems to be a nice, little cottage!” Ally exclaimed. Linda raised her eyebrows at Ally's sudden recovery after the dreadful experience with the darkies.
“It could be a tr-” Linda said slowly, then was interrupted by an old women who was just coming out of the homely little cottage. She looked in surprise at the group of us. I looked around at the other girls, hoping they had all changed into their human forms. Luckily, they had done so ahead of time.
“Well, hello there!” the women said, “It is quite a surprise to see a lively bunch of girls like yourselves wandering through this gloomy forest. Won't you come into my house? I have some freshly baked chocolate-chip cookies and milk that you may eat and drink.” And indeed, at these words, the wonderful smell of cookies wafted through the window of the cottage.
“Well... if there is cookies, then I am coming!” Michele said with a giggle. Linda bit her lip, but Michele was already running eagerly toward the cottage door. I was not so easily convinced, but Linda slowly nodded her head.
“Come on guys!” Ally begged, her eyes sparkling. With Michele and Ally won over, Linda gave a laugh and walked after them. I followed behind. Fern and Karly looked at the cottage, then at the smiling women. They shrugged their shoulders and shuffled into the cottage.
“My name is Penelope,” the old women said as she pulled a sheet of cookies out of an old-fashioned oven.
“I'm Linda, this is Tarah, Michele, Fern, Karly, and Ally,” Linda introduced all of us. As she said our names, she pointed at each one of us. Penelope smiled as she carefully put the hot cookies on a dish. The dish was soon heaped with cookies.
“Take as many as you like,” Penelope said with a glint in her eyes. All the girls grabbed for the cookies, smearing chocolate all over their finger tips. Ally took a cookie, but did not put it in her mouth. Instead, she looked around as the other girls began to eat the treats. Linda noticed this too. “Stop!” she shouted. Michele froze mid-bite. Karly and Fern raised their eyebrows as they set their cookies down. Ally looked at Linda in surprise.
“What's the problem?” Ally asked as she took a step closer toward Linda.
“Nothing... it's just...we forgot the milk! You can't have chocolate-chip cookies without milk!” Linda replied. While Penelope was busy getting the jug of milk and Ally was busy helping Penelope get some cups, Linda gave the other girls a meaningful look. Her eyes spoke silent words: “Don't eat anything! We can't trust Penelope and I'm not sure about Ally anymore.” Ally and Penelope turned to face us again with the jug of milk and cups in hand.
“Here we go,” Penelope said as she set the jug on a tiny wooden table. She handed out cups to all of the girls and poured some especially creamy milk into all the cups. Fern sniffed the milk cautiously when Penelope had turned her back on them.
“This milk smells sour. Is it sour?” Fern remarked daringly.
“And why would she serve us sour milk?” Ally challenged.
“Well... I know she wouldn't serve it purposely,” Fern answered slowly, “But why don't you try it out yourself if you think so strongly it not to be sour. I absolutely despise sour milk. You'd be doing me a favor to prove to me if it was or not.” I scratched the top of my forehead to hide a smirk. If Ally knew the food was indeed poisonous, then how would she prove to us it wasn't without drinking it herself? Penelope's cheerful smile had not dropped since our arrival and it seemed she was determined to keep it that way.
“Why, that milk is not even a day old! I just milked it from my wonderful little goat this morning,” Penelope interrupted. And to prove her point, she took another jug of milk and poured a cup for herself. With a satisfied slurp, she downed the milk.
“See?” she said innocently.
“Yeah. That would make sense.... goat milk. I actually don't like goat milk,” Fern said, making an excuse so she would not have to drink it.
“That is beautiful pottery!” Karly complimented.
“Thank you!” Penelope replied, her smile widening happily.
“Can I see it?” Karly asked cleverly. Penelope had not been prepared for Karly's next words and she was in a moment's thought before hesitantly handing the jug of milk to Karly. Karly bent her head forward closer to the jug as if examining the design ladened on it. I could tell she was really just wanting to take a whiff of the milk inside of this jug to determine if it too had the strong sour smell like the milk Penelope had served us. Karly's reaction was small, but not small enough.
“What's the matter?” Penelope demanded.
“This milk smells wonderful! Your goat must produce great goat milk. Can I please have some of this milk?” Karly said, avoiding Penelope's question. Unfortunately, Penelope was not so easily fooled by Karly's shower of compliments hiding the question before. Penelope's attempt at playing little Miss 'Sweet as Sugar' ended suddenly.
“Now, you look here! I already told you, the milk I served you is just fine! I can't see why you think it is poiso-” Penelope stopped as she almost spoke the word all of us were thinking. Poison, poison, poison. It's poison. I thought to myself. Penelope smiled again.
“I can't see why you think it is positioned as sour milk,” Penelope tried. Nobody believed her, not even Michele who was usually easily convinced. Ally looked in disgust at Penelope.
“We didn't say it was poison, Penelope,” I said with an inquiring look on my face.
“We didn't,” Michele agreed.
“Why would you think such a thing like that?” Linda asked with surprise. We all played dumb as we waited for her to answer. Penelope opened her mouth, then closed it. She glanced at Ally for help, but Ally had turned her back as if in defeat. Penelope finally said,
“I didn't say poison and-”
“But you were about to,” Linda cut in. Penelope glared at all of us, then her expression softened.
“I'm sorry you feel that way, but can I at least escort you to where you would like to go?” Penelope offered. Ally turned around at this offer and smiled at Penelope.
“Why not? We could really use more help anyways,” Ally said smoothly.
“But,” I said.
“No buts about it. You know how desperate we really are. We need as much help as we can get!” Ally said, getting the upper hand on this situation to my dismay. Ally grabbed Penelope's and Linda's hands and hurried out the door, expecting the rest of us to follow.
LOL, I have a really short chapter... then a really long one! Sorry I couldn't break this chapter up into smaller chapters. It took me a while to find an opening for ending the chapter.
Chapter Seven- Mallton City
Linda tried to pull away from Ally as she was tugged through the door.
“Ally!” Linda said warningly. Her voice was full of annoyance, but Ally kept a firm grip on Linda's hand. Penelope went along merrily, hardily needing Ally's guidance to where we were going. How did Ally know the way anyway? Linda was the only one who knew where my parent's exact location was... or was she? I was full of uncertainty as Ally led the group confidently. At one point, Linda flopped to the ground, preventing Ally from taking one more step without letting go of Linda's hand.
“I'm not a baby, Ally. Besides, you don't even know where we are going!” Linda grumbling. She glared at Ally, and it would have been hard to believe they had ever been friends. Ally slowly let go of Linda's hand. She didn't even seem to hear Linda's remark. She just rolled her eyes and turned to Penelope, like she didn't even care what Linda did next. Linda immediately jumped to her feet and wiped the sweat off her hand. I caught up to her and looked back to see what Ally was up to now. Ally was smiling and chatting with Penelope as if they were old friends. Maybe they were, I thought to myself. The other girls were obviously not pleased with Ally's behavior. They kept throwing her looks of disgust or that said, “Shame, Ally,” The twins ran to Linda's other side.
“What was that all about?” Karly asked. Fern kept glancing back at Ally as if Ally might overhear their conversation.
“It doesn't even look like you are friends anymore. Like... you two are almost enemies,” Fern added. Linda kicked a rock into a bush then looked up.
“What was that?” she asked.
“Oh, nothing. Just, what is going on between you and Ally?” Karly asked impatiently. I too, was curious to hear Linda's answer.
“I dunno. She's changed so much the last couple of hours. I always thought of her as a quite, loyal friend. Now, she isn't either of those things.... The things I really liked about her seem to not even exist anymore in her personality.” Linda said, her frustration growing with every word. She kicked hard at another stone, sending it flying into forest. I understood almost exactly how Linda felt. Before I'd moved, a lot of my friends had backed out on me so they could hang out with someone else.
“We have to get rid of Penelope, that's for sure,” I said, quickly changing the subject.
“Yes, you're right. The only problem is, she smells dangerous, very dangerous. We have to pretend like she is still a friend,” Linda replied firmly.
“She can't know where we are going though!” Karly argued. Linda bit her lip. Finally she said,
“I know... The safest thing we could do is not go to the Grand Darkies' Lair.”
“Grand Darkies' Lair? What are you guys talking about?” Michele asked loudly as she came within earshot.
“Oh! Did I say that? Not so loud, Michele. I hope you guys won't slip on any of this to Penelope or Ally! What I meant by 'Grand Darkies' Lair' was, that's where they are keeping your parents, Tarah,” Linda said quietly. I nodded and gulped.
“So... if we aren't going to go to the Grand Darkies' Lair, then where will we go?” Fern asked.
“Oh the nearest town... maybe, Mallton City...” Ally said casually, slipping in beside Linda. I gulped again. Ally knows our plan, I thought to myself. I felt my heat fill up with dread.
“Uh... Mallton City? What are you talking about?” Linda replied.
“You know what I'm talking about Melinda!” Ally snapped.
“Then, Mallton City it is! We are starving, so we thought it would be a good idea to stop by for something to eat,” Linda explained.
“Oh please! I heard everything you said, so you better stop lying to me!” Ally said briskly. So Mallton City was where we would go. With Linda trying to start up a friendly conversation with Ally, the twins picking a fight, and Penelope complaining, it wasn't much of a pleasant trip. With no one really to talk to except Michele who was much to busy picking wild flowers, my thoughts began to wander to the 'Grand Darkies' Lair' and my parents. Every minute seem to speed by quickly, making the time we had to rescue my parents seem to get shorter and shorter. If Linda had been expecting to walk the rest of the way to rescue my parents before we decided to go to Mallton City, then we must be close. First thing was first though, we had to find a way to get rid of Penelope and even Ally if she kept up her behavior.
