..............................................The Migration................................................

~...Chapter One...~
.......I must have been dreaming. I saw myself, running barefoot through a field of fresh flowers, warm rays of the sun dancing in between the soft cotton-like clouds, birds chirping, butterflies floating by. And a fresh summer wind, blowing right through my hair. And it wasn't that frizzy mess I despised, but a flowing sea of soft, straight hair. But then, I felt a small pang of pain in my foot, and I felt myself fly forward. I yelped as a dark hole, opened before me, and swallowed me whole. Then it all faded. Reality returned, and once again, I was in my small room, sleeping in my bed. I shivered, realizing my blanket had fallen of my bed. I grabbed it, and hugged it around my body, as I tried to figure out what time it was. It must have been early morning, everything was still very gray and heavy, not a sound came from outside, yet as I looked into the crack under my door, I saw a fading light. I wondered if it was my father, and I wanted to go and see, but the warmth and comfort of my bed kept me where I was. I sighed as my eyelids began to close, feeling very heavy. My head sank into my pillow, and I fell asleep again.

~...Chapter Two...~
.......Soon I awoke again, that same heavy feeling floating in the air. I forced my eyes to open, and I looked around, surprised to see the land was still dark as ever. With a groan I got up, fighting against the numb feeling in my limbs, the dizziness. I walked to the door, with an overpowering feeling as if I was about to faint, and entered into the short hallway. Turning into the bathroom, I didn't even switch on the light. Instead I splashed the cold water unto my face, not that I felt any more awake than I had before. I felt as if the whole world had suddenly fallen asleep for eternity, as I looked out the window and realized something shocking. There was not a single cloud in the sky, and yet neither the sun or the moon was out. Panic overcame me, and I ran into the living room. There I saw my family, sitting on the couch, getting ready. But for what? I stared at the clock, my vision still blurry from the blinding light surrounding me. What was going on?! My father gave me a knowing look, and without saying anything, he nodded weakly, motioning for the armchair.

~...Chapter Three...~
.......I closed my eyes painfully. Leave? I didn't want to leave! But I knew I'd have to. My father had told me the truth, the horrible thing I now wished I never had to know. As I thought about it, I felt my stomach turn queasy, a mindless panic taking over my thoughts. How could this happen? I shook my head, trying to break out of the confusion I was in. I'd have to accept it. Now that the truth was revealed, I knew what I'd have to do next. My friends. Alice and Penelope. We used to go to school together. But then I left, forced to now learn in an unknown place, full of foreign people, full of foreign things. And yet, my original friendship with them survived, and even more so, we grew closer. I had a sickening feeling they did not yet know, so I ran into my room, pulling on my clothes as quickly as possible. Whatever shirt I could find- I put it on. My socks were mismatched, but I was in such a hurry it no longer seemed important. I looked outside at the gray, dark world, and then I saw her. Alice. She walked by my building, not bothering to look up. And I knew at once something must have been wrong. Coming from the direction of the school on a Saturday? And what's more, why was she carrying her little sister in her arms?

~...Chapter Four...~
.......I ran down the three flights of stairs blindly, trying to catch up to Alice. I felt my legs and arms bang against the handrails, but I didn't stop. I sprinted out of the lobby and quickly turned left, but she was already halfway up the hill to her home, still not noticing me. I panted heavily, feeling as if I were to collapse but I told myself to keep going. I caught up to her just in the nick of time- right in front of her building. Alice stared at me surprised. "What's the matter?" she asked in a calm and level voice. I quickly told her, gasping for air in between sentences. Alice stared at me. "You...you can't be serious!" she said painfully. I shook my head sadly. "I am, now come! You have to pack. We're leaving really, really soon, and we still have to get Penelope." I finished as I grabbed her sleeve and pulled her into the small apartment. Inside, the atmosphere was puzzling and somewhat scary. The whole house was pitch black and Alice's whole family walked around in panic. Alice quickly set down her sister, who ran to their grandfather. He sat almost motionlessly on the couch, watching the news and mumbling to himself. Alice's mother gave her a disapproving look as she pushed through, and ran to Sammy, hugging her desperately. Her father seemed to be shouting at everyone and no one at the same time. I ran into the kitchen and grabbed what food and water I could find, even though normally I wouldn't even dream of doing such a thing. Alice finished cramming all of the needed things into her tiny backpack, and she pulled on a very heavy jacket. Her mother wailed, pulling Alice close to her chest, but I knew she wouldn't leave with us. Alice wiped a tear away from her eye, and then she followed me out. I knew that this decision was not easy on her, but she had picked correctly and this was just the beginning of a life changing journey.

~...Chapter Five...~
.......As Alice and I ran back to my house, I couldn't help but worry. Would my family leave without me? After all, Alice and I had spent a long time in her house, and everyone wanted to leave right away. I bit my lip as I pushed myself to run faster, shouting to Alice to do the same. Soon we had made it to my building and it took all of my willpower not to collapse on the front steps. We still had to tell Penelope. I stared at Alice desperately, "Go tell her." I whispered, my parched throat not letting me talk. She nodded tiredly, and headed up the long hill to Penelope's building. As I watched her drag her feet hurriedly on the sidewalk, I couldn't help but feel worried. Worried and nervous that by the time they got back, my father would have left already, and my family also. I groaned, there was nothing else I could do, so I did it- I ran after Alice. Either we were all going together, or we weren't going at all.

~...Chapter Six...~
.......I sighed anxiously as I watched Penelope finish packing, I wanted to go- NOW. "Alright!" she called from the depths of her apartment, "I'm done!" I nodded silently and quickly clipped the leash unto Dawn's collar, then we all headed out. As we walked towards my building, I fought against the urge to run home, to see if everyone was still waiting, or if they had already left. As we neared in on my building, I sighed, relieved and yet surprised. My parents had not yet left, but the surprising fact was that around out building stood a group of people, about a hundred of them. They were all packed and ready to go, I guessed they were leaving too but I couldn't understand why they had come here. I ran up to my family, and my mother handed me my backpack, quickly explain our route and rules during the travel. I was just about to ask about the people, when suddenly I heard a loud horn. Turning around, I saw my father signaling everyone into a small group as he explained everything, and then we were off. We turned right and climbed up the short hill into the small neighborhood of houses. I could feel the excitement bubbling inside of me as we began to leave, the dark, sad city. No more tall, gray buildings in our way, no more darkness and fear. This was the beginning....the beginning of something wonderful.

~...Chapter Seven...~
.......We must have been walking for at least four hours already, and I was beginning to feel it in my legs. I sighed, even though I was so tired, I was also excited. We'd passed so much already, each time we began the climb up a hill, no matter how excruciatingly steep or long it was, there was always a mutual buzzing excitement- over what was on the other side. I'd seen houses, buildings, and they all seemed so horrifying. A type of horrifying that left you with a nervous and queasy feeling in the pit of your stomach. My father had told me everything. Those people, who did not believe in what was true, those who thought what was coming as just a legend? They were staying, and the things that would happen to them, couldn't be easy for anyone to face up to. The buildings were said to crumble and be destroyed- by terrible earthquakes that would only cease when everything was gone. The people who would stay, would be forced to live in cellars, fighting what little food they could find. Cannibalism would arise from the desperate hunger, but that wasn't all. After the earthquakes ended, it was time for the storms- tornados, hurricanes, snowstorms. Everything would be ruined- cities flooded, ice growing up on the remains of buildings, wind picking up items and throwing them around the town. When all people and animal life was eliminated in the city, it was up to the plants and weather, to get rid of anything left, to bury any signs that there was once any human activity here. This is what was destined to happen to those who did not leave, who did not listen- to those who stayed.

~...Chapter Eight...~
.......I yawned sleepily as we neared another hill, we had been traveling all day. Leaving the city, we began to walk along beautiful country landscapes, enough to make everyone wish that the sun was shining. But another thing I had noticed, was that something was truly changing. The farther we came from the city, the more beautiful the land became and something else- the more colorful. Yes, the changes were subtle, but we had only begun our journey. And yet, I could see the differences already. Although it was all still shaded gray, everything seemed to have a little tint of their proper colors. And even though the sky was still bare, we felt a difference in day and night. "Camp, we're at camp." Alice's raspy and tired voice interrupted my daydream. I nodded as I sat- or truthfully more like collapsed, unto the ground. I didn't want to get up, but I knew I had to help set up the camp. Just as I was assembling mine and my friend's easy fold "tent", I hard a sheepish giggle-like sound behind me, and I sighed, knowing who it was- Matt. "Tired?" he asked in that mocking yet somehow adoring way of his. "I'm fine." I mumbled angrily, wishing that Alice was here, she knew how to deal with him. "Oh reeeeaaally?" he asked, leaning against the stack of boxes. I was just about to tell him to go away, when suddenly he pushed too hard and he fell over, soon covered by a blanket of items. I couldn't help but laugh as I finished setting up the tent and headed over to the "buffet", to get something to eat. I could already tell that this trip was going to be very .."interesting".

~.....Chapter Nine.....~
.......I woke up, feeling the tiredness throughout the lower part of my body, especially my feet. With a yawn, I sat up and looked at Penelope and Alice. They were still both asleep. I yawned again and grabbed by clothes, quickly changing. I then pushed open the flap of the tent, and stepped out into the gray, fading world. Somewhere, the sun shone brightly as always, somewhere there was no grays, only real colors. That somewhere is where I wanted to be. I left the camp, making sure not to wander too far. I arrived at a hill, or more like a cliff, that suddenly just plummeted down, almost a 90 degree angle. About midway down, there was a break in the rock, where water began to flow out of. It continued to fall, then crashed unto the jagged rocks below. A beautiful waterfall. Suddenly, I felt a hand on my shoulder and I jumped. Turning around, I didn't see anything, but I felt a chilling cold wind slide past my cheek and everything....seemed gray again. Frightened, I ran back to camp. There I saw that most were ready, finishing packing their tents. I ran to my friends, and they gave me a surprised look. I was about to explain when I heard a horn. We were leaving again, continuing our journey. I looked timidly in the direction of the cliff, then shook my head. "Must have imagined it." I murmured to myself as we set off, leaving that place forever.

~.....Chapter Ten.....~
.......By now I had lost track of time completely, and I was greatly unsure of how long we had been traveling for. We'd encountered so many things already, from tiny neighborhood houses, to vast forests, even to endless oceans. The journey was difficult and long, and we were all tired. Every time we passed by a city, more and more people decided to stay, promising that they would soon follow and catch up. I never saw any of them again. And even though I too, wanted to stay behind and rest, my father insisted we continue. However, I continued to push myself forward, knowing the rewards of going, and even more so, the consequences of staying. Sighing, I looked around, realizing it was getting dark. I looked to Penelope and Alice beside me, both looking tired. "We're gonna find camp soon." I noticed absent mindedly as we began to climb a hill. They just nodded, too tired to reply. I shivered suddenly, feeling a cold wind blow past. I was about to reach into my backpack to grab a hat when I realized everyone had stopped. We were standing on a sort of ledge in the side of the hill, a quite large one actually. My father nodded, and we set our stuff down, preparing our camp. As I ventured down the hill to get some firewood, I couldn't help but notice the colors- they were already so much stronger. I shivered again, feeling another chilling wind. The truth was, the warmer the colors were, the colder the environment became. We were traveling north, and it was a clear change. I yawned, grabbing what seemed enough wood, and ran back up the hill, only relieved to finally be able to relax.

~.....Chapter Eleven.....~
.......Once again we were setting out, and I had a feeling that we were almost there. Sure, the colors were still faded, but there was a feeling connected to them again. Each color meant something, each one was beautiful in its own way. I watched as my father signaled us towards a cave. "Here." he said, pointing towards the opening. "This is the last part of our journey. We will have to pass through here and this part alone will take us an average of three days. Once we complete that part, it will take us roughly one more day to reach the destination. However, be aware that once we enter Dead Man's Cave, there is no turning back. This is your final decision. Also, once we are inside, we must all stick very close together as it is indeed dangerous. There are many distractions, but do not let yourself be taken in by them. The journey will be rather harsh, and I will ask that everyone co-operate. Any questions?" he finished, looking around at the faces that gathered around. No one said anything, so with only a determined nod from my father, we entered. I was so excited, we were almost there. Even though, I'd heard my father's warnings I couldn't help but feel the spirit of adventure within me. With a big grin, I entered though the dark doorway, accompanied by my friends and the people around us.

~.....Chapter Twelve.....~
.......I took deep breath as another cool breeze blew by. We were in the cave, Old Man's Cave. We had entered about two hours ago, and hadn't stopped to rest since. The old cavern was large, filled with many winding paths- each of them leading to a different place, usually a dead end. The walls of the cave were a gorgeous dark purple, with a few light, lilac colored stones. Mineral stalagmites and stalactites could be seen everywhere, each sparkling as drops of water slid down them. Strange shaped rocks lay under our feet, all different colors of the rainbow. We all walked carefully, as the rocks were quite sharp and slippery. Out group suddenly stopped, and I found myself on the top of a rather small but still very steep slope. Beneath us, stood a pond filled with beautiful sparkling crystals. The water was clear and had a light rose scent, and as I stared into it, I saw my reflection. My father cleared his throat, getting the attention of all of the travelers who were gazing down at the waters below. "This lake, is called The Pond Of Mirages." he started. "It is said, that those who look too deep into the waters, see a reflection of their life- only perfect. Most, once trapped, are unable to set themselves free. Before long, their bodies turn to stone and they are left here." He pointed to a group of stone people, each seemingly staring into the water. I bit my lip nervously, thinking about all of those poor people. "Anyway," my father continued, "this is where we'll make our camp today. Tomorrow we will have to enter into the depths of the cave, so be prepared for a difficult journey." he warned. We all nodded and began to set our stuff down. "Oh, and one more thing...." I heard him say. "Whatever you do, don't drink the water from the Pond....."
