I sat on my bed, sobbing. Why did this happen? How could this happen? The world was so mean! It was like everything was against me. The 1 thing I loved, the 1 thing I cared about.. Gone, forever, into the face of darkness. It was all my fault! Would I ever see it again? Was it truly gone? I know my heart went with him, the thing I loved the most. Just 1 thing.. Just 1 thing.. I repated over and over in my head. Just 1 thing I could do, to save him.. And I was unable. How devastating! Just 1 thing.. Just 1thing.. I pulled the covers over my head and fell into an un-easy sleep. Just 1 thing... Just 1 thing... Just 1 thing...

Chapter 1 - A Horrible Life

"Stephine! Out of bed, NOW!" My aunt yelled upstairs.
I groaned and rolled over, knowing I wouldn't get one more minute of sleep. I swung my feet at the edge of my bed, until they touched my cold, hard wood, floor. Then I slid off the covers and let my eyes adjust to the damp room. After I could see well enough, I hopped into my clothes and hurried out of the freezing bedroom, leaving the door open a crack, so some warm air could leak in. Then I walked to the kitchen, yawning.
"There you are! Hurry up or you'll miss the bus!" Aunt Harriet said. "I don't even know why I send you to school, it sure doesn't do any good." She mutterd.
I ignored her and poured some ceral in a bowl. After gobbleing it up, I reached for the box, again. But seen me and jerked it away.
"I don't think so! You need to wait for the bus right this minute, young lady!" She said rudely.
I sighed and stood up abrutly, knocking over my chair. I bent to pick it up, then squeezed into my too-little jacket.
"And learn something today!" She called over her sholder.
I shut the kitchen door and slowly made my way to the raod. I waited about five minutes, then started shivering. I was suprised it wasn't snowing yet. But maybe snow would be good. At least I'd have something to look at, while I stood waiting for the bus, frozen to the ground. But again, if it snowed to much, I'd have to stay home. And I sure didn't want that! I sighed and started drawing pictures in the mud with the tip of my shoe. Then I remberd today was Friday. Darn. The weekend started tomorrow. I hated weekends. Well, at least, weekends with my aunt. They seemed so long. And to think, I had liked them a long time ago...
BEEP!!!!!
The bus horn blew, making me jump out of my skin. I ran to get inside and started toward my usual seat. My best friend, Cody, was already there. I sat down beside him.
"Hey!" He greeted me.
"Hola." I said.
We sat there for a minute, then I said, "My life is horrible."
"It could be worse." He said, trying to cheer me up.
"Yeah. If there was a such thing as witches! Because then, she could put a spell on me!"
He knew who I meant and didn't say anything for a little while.
"So.. I was wondering, if you were busy this weekend..."
"Yeah right!" I snorted. "You know so. To think of all the chores I will have!" I moaned.
"Well, maybe you're aunt will let you sleepover at my house? Mom wouldn't mind."
"I wish!" I said. "But thanks anyway."
"Well.. Would she let you come if my Mom asked?"
The bus pulled in front of the school and he grinned at me. I grinned back.
"You're a genuis!"
"I know!"
I fake punched him in the arm and we stood up, trying to beat each other to our home room.

Chapter 2 - The Sleepover

"Hi Steph!" Cody greeted me. "Come on, you can take you're bags to my room!"
"Why hello, Stephine! Your early!" His Mom smiled at me.
I laughed.
"Yeah, I think my aunt couldn't wait to get rid of me."
She laughed too, not knowing how true it was.
"After you unpack, come back down and I'll fix you lunch!" She called.
Once we got to Cody's room, I opened my bag and pulled out my old sleeping bag. I layed it on the floor and smoothed it out. Then I took out my tooth brush and tooth paste, setting it on his desk. After that, I sat my bag in the corner, with the clothes I had brought inside.
"That's all you brought?" Cody asked, suprised.
"Yeah." I shrugged. "It was all I needed."
"You can put your tooth brush in my bathroom." He told me, laying on his bed.
So I picked it up, along with my tooth paste and layed it on his sink. Once I got back in the room, I opened my bag again. Cody sat up, curiously.
"I forgot my blanket." I said, dragging out my tatterd peice of cloth.
"That is your blanket?" He asked.
"Yeah.. It was my baby blanket. " I explaind. "So, I guess it is my blankey."
"Oh.. Hey, didn't your Mom make that?"
A lump came to my throat, alothough it was ridiculous. She had died 5 years ago, I should be used to her being gone by now. But I was afriad to speak, so I just nodded.
"Hey, I'm starving, aren't you done yet?" He asked, changing the subject.
"Yeah." I said gratefully.
"Come on.. Mom makes great lunches!"

"Hey, Steph? Are you still awake?"
"Hmm..." I answerd, sleeply.
"I was just wondering.. What was she like, your Mom?"
I was silent for a minute, thinking.
"You don't have to tell me, if you don't want to." He said.
"Well... She was funny. And nice." I said thoughtfully. "She was a lot like your Mom, except for she was horrible at cooking.. And she loved to dance."
"Oh." He said.
I yanwed. "Good night."
"Good night." He replied, laying back down.
I dreamed about Mom that night.
