Hey, Tasha! I just got home from camp! And I miss you SO much! :’( I wish the soccer camp would go all year round, then we could hang out and tease the boys that were better then them! Good Times! I wish we could be together! But I’m like so many miles away from u in Hollywood. I wish we lived in the same town! I know u think I’m lucky living here bcuz of all the celebs, but I’m actually tired of it! I want to take my music elsewhere! Like where u live! I would love to live in Seattle! How come your town always get in books? Seattle is in the Twilight Saga! So say if I moved there u could introduce me to Jacob Black, or Edward Cullen or even Bella Swan! I wanna turn into a Vampire! LOL! Plz - you have to write me back soon and tell me all about your big reunion!
YBBF (Your Best Friend Forever),
Meg
OBTW - My brother, Derek, was at our Soccer Tournament at camp and he was surprised to see the girls beat the guys! And he also said that there was only one girl who caught his eye! Guess who! Give up? YOU! He said that he his interested in u! Write back soon!
Tasha laughed out loud as she read the e-mail, her best friend from soccer camp sent her. Meg even sent some pics of them together at camp with all the boys, Nick, Richie, Chace, brothers: Stefan and Damon, Bailey, Spencer and the boy that caught her eye the most… Aiden. Aiden had brown choppy hair, with one blue faded streak. He wore shorts and usually a Basketball T or just a plain T-shirt. He was the popular, nicest, most sweet guy out of all the other guys! She stared at Aiden’s picture for the longest. She shook her out and was about to click REPLY when Miranda, her BFF appeared in the doorway.
“Tasha!” Miranda called out, running in with a wide grin on her smooth face. “I missed you so much! How was camp? You look so tan!”
Tasha jumped up and happily hugged her BFF.
“You look tan, too!” she said, standing back after a moment. “I thought it rained a lot in Ireland.”
“It does,” said Miranda. “Believe me! There was literally moss growing on my shoes.” She smiled and turned her head from side to side. “This is from my sister’s self-tanner. I snuck a little this morning. Not too orange?”
Tasha nodded her approval. “No, it’s good. But you missed a spot, right there.” She pointed to Miranda’s neck and giggled as her BFF quickly tucked in her chin.
“I’ll have to get that later,” said Miranda. Then she laughed and grabbed Tasha’s hand. “Right now, I want to hear all about camp. “Oh!” She reached into her pocket. “But first, I bought you this!”
She pulled out a small baby blue box and handed it to Tasha, who opened it at once. Inside was a silver ring with two hands holding a heart and a crown on top. It was one of the prettiest things Tasha had ever seen!
“It’s a claddagh ring,” Miranda told her. “I got it in the village where my grandma grew up. It can be a symbol of love,” she explained. Tasha turned slowly to Aiden’s picture on her computer screen and then back to Miranda, “with the hands and the heart and all. But lots of people wear them as friendship ring, too. Do you like it?”
“I love it!” said Tasha, slipping the ring on and admiring how it looked on her hand. “Thanks so much!”
“Wait,” Miranda told her, grinning. “You’ve got to wear it like this.” She took the ring from Tasha’s finger and turned it upside down. “This way, heart out, means you’re available; your heart is open.” She worked her eyebrows up and down. “The other way, heart in, means someone’s already captured your heart. And we don’t want anyone thinking you’re not available, now, do we?” Tasha turned slowly again to the picture of the boys from camp on her computer screen but, only looked at Aiden.
Tasha laughed -- weakly. If Miranda only knew! And that’s when she almost, almost spilled her summer secret. But she couldn’t.
Guess what, Miranda? There are some people who think I’m available. A whole camp full of people, in fact! How crazy is that? What made them think that? Funny you should ask. Turns out, I lied and said that my ex, Max, was still my only BFF. No really. I did!
Of course, Tasha hadn’t meant to lie. It just kind of…happened.
“Okay!” said Miranda, plopping down on Tasha’s desk chair. “I’m ready. What was camp like? How were the counsellors? Did you make any friends?”
Tasha took a deep breathe and tried to think about where to begin.
Of course Miranda would want to know everything about camp. After all, it had been her idea to go to the summer soccer camp in the first place! (Camp was a loose term, since it was held on the campus of a tiny college - without a single tent or cabin or canoe for miles around!) They signed up to go together, of course, like everything they’d done since first grade.
It was all planned out: Tasha would play soccer, and Miranda would be apart of the cheerleaders. By the end of camp, Tasha would be good enough to make the High School soccer team and Miranda would be good enough to make the High School Cheerleading squad. Not the most exciting summer, Tasha thought, but way better than babysitting Miranda’s little brother and sister at the pool, like last year.
This perfect plan, however, was not meant to be. Instead of spending three carefree weeks rooming with Tasha and becoming an expert at playing soccer, Miranda had been whisked off to Ireland with the rest of her family. Her grandmother was turning seventy-four, and had decided the whole gang should help her celebrate in the tiny town where she was born.
And Tasha? Well, Tasha ended up making a million new friends, not touching her IPOD once, and having the absolute best summer ever (despite one massive, ridiculous, totally accidental lie).
None of which she was prepared to admit to Miranda.
“So,” Miranda teased. “I’m waiting. And what were you reading that was so funny when I came in?”
“What?” Tasha watched as Miranda turned to face the blinking computer screen. “Oh…uh…nothing,” she said quickly. “Just and e-mail from someone at camp.”
“Really?” said Miranda. “Who? A boy?”
Tasha almost laughed at the absurdity of the idea -- then caught her breath as she realized that her BFF was reading the e-mail.
“Wow… you made a good friend,” Miranda said slowly. Her tone was somewhat less than thrilled.
“Oh, well, you know…” Tasha shrugged, not sure why she felt so guilty.
“And her name’s Meg?” Miranda went on.
“Yeah,” said Tasha. She tried, unsuccessfully, to lean between Miranda and the computer screen. “She was my roommate. They had to put someone else in, you know… when you couldn’t go.”
Miranda nodded and frowned very, very slightly. “And she calls you ‘Tasha’?’
Tasha shrugged again. “She just start calling me that… Everyone calls me
Tasha, you do too.” Tasha said.
“Yeah, I know.” She grinned. “So, what’s Meg like?” she asked Tasha.
“She’s…uh…really nice.” Tasha smiled, but took extra care not to sound too enthusiastic. “She’s from upstate, and going into seventh grade, too. She’s really into comedy and drama and stuff like that. She’s the one who talked me into trying out for the cheerleading group.”
“The Cheerleading group?” Ask Miranda, confused. “But what about the soccer thing?”
Tasha’s eyes grew wide. “Well…I sprained my knee.” She paused.
“Yeah?” Miranda urged. “You look fine to me.”
Tasha shrugged.
“Are you kidding?” said Miranda in half silence, half mock disbelief. “So you didn’t play soccer for 3 weeks?”
“Yes I played. At the end of the 2nd week I sprained my knee. But I played the tournament. And I just watched how cheerleading goes.” Tasha wrinkled her nose.
Miranda twirled a copper curl around her finger and grinned. “Well, at least you won’t distract me while I’m cheerleading,” she joked. “But that was the whole point of camp! You to get more better at soccer!” She laughed.
Tasha maintained her innocence for one more second, then burst into giggles. “Maybe,” she said. “But at least I’m better then you at soccer.”
“Oh, I know,” said Miranda, still smiling.
“Oh, and I broke my soccer ball!” Tasha said, still a bit giggly.
“Well, u know what you should do about that?” Miranda said smiling.
“What? What should I do about my broken soccer ball?” Tasha asked.
“You should call 1-800-FIX-MY-SOCCER-BALL!” Miranda said laughing hysterically. Tasha laughed too.
“It’s sooo good to be home again! Especially with you, Miranda! You always make me feel good!” Tasha told Miranda. “But, I do miss camp.” Once again Tasha looked at Aiden’s picture on the computer screen and sighed.
