~~♥~~Emily Smith and the Dragon’s Egg~~♥~~

A girl sat on her floor, in her little room, all alone. She sighed and looked around, causing her brown pony tail to whip around. Her room was empty, besides her bed and dresser, and a single book that was in her lap. On the cover read, ‘Dragons—all about, special facts, pictures, and clues to their existence’. She stared at the book with her large brown eyes and sighed. On the cover of the book there was a note, a note that read

WARNING: Do not open. This book contains information that will change your life and boggle your mind.

She bit her lip, and the reached down, and tore the note from the book’s cover. Holding her breath, she opened the book to the front page, and suddenly, her vision went black….

Chapter 1; A day Emily Smith won’t ever forget.

Part 1

Emily Smith walked to school that day, holding her backpack tightly. She turned a corner on a busy street, sticking to the sidewalk and elbowing her way through the crowd of other people who lived in New York City. Her pony tail swung from side to side as she walked, and her eyes were trained on the ground. Finally, she came to a bus stop, and stood there, waiting with a few other kids in her class.

One girl leaned over and whispered, “Hey, loser, nice shirt.” She snickered along with the other girls that stood next to her.

Emily sighed and looked down at her shirt—it was baby blue, and had Mickey Mouse on it. She felt tears sting in her eyes, “I-I….it’s not my fault that all they had left was this….” She muttered, looking away.

“Aw, is the orphan girl gonna cry?” One of the girls teased, and all of the children--but one boy...--burst out with wild laughter.

“No….” Emily sniffed, holding her backpack even tighter. Stupid bus, come already! She thought to herself. Finally, the yellow bus pulled up to the stop, and the doors swung open with a hsssss.

“Good morning, children!” The bus driver sang, She was a happy old lady with curly white hair that was to her shoulders, she always wore a sweat-shirt and jeans, and sneakers. She was kinder than most people in that city, and she was kind to Emily the most.

Emily ran into the bus before the other children could taunt her more, and snagged the first seat she saw--seat number 1. She sighed, and set her back-pack down next to her, so no one would sit there. The other children ran into the bus, all chattering to each other, giggling and laughing. No-one payed any attention to little old Emily, though.

But then the last boy boarded the bus--the one who hadn't laughed at her. He was short, had white-blond hair, and odd dark blue eyes. He wore large round-rimed glasses, a red Tee-shirt, and blue jeans, and was the shortest boy in the 7th grade. He was always teased, beaten-up, and yelled at because of his size, his glasses, his hair color and eye color….he was just a regular target for bullies. And the Bully Target headed right for seat one.

Emily swallowed, and thought, What? He can see me? I thought I was invisible….

“Hey, Emily.” He said, smiling, he sat down next to her.

And those two words, ‘Hey Emily’ would change Emily’s life forever…..

Part 2

“Uh, hi….” She replied in her quiet voice. She blinked her large brown eyes and stared at the ground.

The bus driver, Rosy, smiled as the bus rumbled down the street. Maybe she’s finally made a friend…? She thought to herself.

“I’m Todd.” Todd replied, smiling at Em kindly. He was about head shorted than her, so he had to look up at her a little.

“Oh…” She said, looking over at him for a moment, “Nice to meet you.”

He smiled again, “You too…..why do you always sit up here? Why not with your friends?” That’s Todd for you—always asking questions.

Emily bit her lip, “Well….” She sighed quietly, “I don’t really have any friends.” She replied slowly. “Why aren’t you sitting with your friends?” She asked, curious now.

“I sit over there every day.” He said, pointing to seat 2. “I don’t have friends either…”

“You do?” She stared at the floor for a moment. She’d never seen him up there before. In fact, she’d never seen him at her school before!

“Yep!” Todd replied, his cheery voice interrupting her thoughts.

The rest of the bus ride for the two 13-year-olds was silent. Em was deep in thought the entire school day, too. Where had this ‘Todd’ kid come from? When had he come to her school? Was Todd even his real name? She didn’t see ‘Todd’ at school the entire day, not even at lunch! This confused her. When she boarded the bus that afternoon, she smiled to Rosy and made a beeline for seat 1—to her surprise, Todd was already there. He smiled and patted the seat, “Saved you a spot.”

“Uhh….thanks…” She murmured, and sat down. The bus roared to life as the rest of the children got on, and then took off. Em, as she had done in the morning, was silent the whole ride. When the bus pulled up at her stop, she got up as fast as she could and ran off, trying to get away from Todd. But Todd followed closely behind. “Emmy, wait!” He called.

Emmy? She thought to herself. She turned, wincing a little, “Yeah?”

“I want to show you something! Common!” He said, and taking her hand, lead her through the crowd of people. Emily followed uncertainly after, and made sure that she had her small can of pepper spray in her backpack. Todd lead her down the busy streets, past clothing stores and sky-scrappers, past the hustle and bustle of the afternoon, and into one of the old and run-down parts of the Big Apple. Houses were boarded up, and shops were closed, a few homeless people sat on stoops begging passers by for money. Emily looked around wearily, where was Todd taking her? Finally, Todd stopped outside of a two-story book store called 'Dragon's Books'. A sign in the window read ‘Open’ but no-one seemed to be there. “Here we are!” He cried, pushing on the door—a little bell rung as the rusty door moaned and opened.

Emily looked around the shabby place with mild interest. “Wow…” The shelves were filled with books, of all shapes sizes and colors, styles and places. They seemed to be covered in a fine layer of dust, and all seemed to be very old. At the back of the shop was a little desk with an old-fashion cash register sitting on top. Behind the desk was a doorway, and over the doorway like a door a curtain of beads, in there Emmy assumed was a flight of stairs to the next floor.

Todd looked around happily, “Wow is right!” He said cheerily. He walked over to one corner of the room and grabbed a red book, with golden letters on the front that read;

Dragons—all about, special facts, pictures, and clues to their existence.

He handed it to her, “Here. Take this. Now, go.” He pointed to the door and his expression became serious.

“What?” She asked, dropping the book, “No! That’s stealing!” She looked towards the door eagerly.

He sighed and picked it up, shoving it into her arms, her spun her around and pushed her out the door, “GO. I’ll see you after school tomorrow—come here, okay? Bring the book—you’ll need it.” He slammed the door behind her, locking it.

Emily stood there, bewildered. She stared down at the book and sighed. She slipped it into her pack and raced home to 178, Liberty Lane, the New York City Orphanage.

Chapter 2; A Todd-Free Day?

Part 1

That next day, as Emily ran down the streets and towards the bus stop, she decided she would never, ever go back to that book store. EVER again. She thought Todd was weird, odd, and just…not really a human. But she brushed that last thought out of her mind, of course he was human! He looked human, sounded human….even smelled human, she guessed. She sighed, and boarded the bus once more, ducking into seat 1. Rosy said to her, “Very nice outfit today, Miss Emmy.” Emily murmured a thanks, and looked down at her outfit—a red tee-shirt, and jeans, and sneakers. She shrugged, and looked around, no sign of Todd? She grinned a little and thought, Maybe I finally got rid of the creep…!

The rest of the school day was Todd-free, too. Emmy started to feel happier, and by the time she got on the bus that afternoon, she was absolutely beaming.

Rosy asked Emily, “Uh, Em, you alright? You’re actually smiling!” She was being sarcastic, over course, but it was rare to see Emily smile.

Emily laughed, “Yep, I’m fine!” She said, giggling, she sat in her favorite seat. So the rest of the day, was also Todd-free. She went home to the orphanage and up to her room, did her homework, then just sat on her bed. Her room was small; it had a dresser, a stand with an old TV, and a little rickety bunk-bed. She sighed, and soon night-time came. She’d gotten in trouble for being late yesterday—she was exactly thirty seconds late, which to Mrs. Caroline, the ‘orphanage lady’, is an hour—so she had no dinner. She watched TV for a while, and then shut her eyes. Todd-free day, how nice….She fell asleep.

A little while later, there was a tapping sound on the window. Emmy sat bolt up in the bottom bunk of the bunk-bed, hitting her head off the old wood. She grunted in pain, and looked to the half-open window. There, peeking into the room was Todd. Em groaned, “What do you want!?!” She hissed, running over to the window.

“You didn’t come, you numb-skull!” He hissed angrily, his dark blue eyes blazing.

“You’re weird. Why should I come?”

“You’re our only hope!”

“Our?!”

“You’re coming with me, I’ll explain when we get to the Haven.” And with that, he reached in and pulled Emmy out of the room, and the book.

Emmy opened her mouth to scream for help, but suddenly everything went black….

Part 2

Emily awoke to find herself being dragged into the old Dragon’s Books book store. She groaned, “Todd! Why are you taking me here?!”

“Because you can help Us.”

“Who's ‘us’?!”

Todd threw back his head just laughed a deep and booming laugh—this unnerved Emmy, she didn’t think it was possible for some-one so small to have a laugh like that. She shrugged it off, and soon she was being lead into the room behind the curtain of beads. It was a living-room type of setting, with wine-red carpet and wine-red couches to match. There was an old worn coffee table in the center of the room, and across from the room on the wall was a flat-screen TV. “Wait—I thought you said you were taking me to some-sort of ‘haven’?!” Emmy asked, confused. She continued to look around the room, noting the stairs on the far side that lead to the second floor, and trying to gauge all possible escapes. Strangely, there were no windows.

“This is the Haven.”

“You hide out in a book store? And to think I was expecting the Batcave.” She muttered sarcastically.

“Yes, We do.” He said ignoring the remark about the 'bat cave'.

“Who ‘we’!?!”

“Me we.” A man in his twenties ran down the steps. He stopped a few feet from Todd and Emmy. “Todd and I. I am Henry Dragon.” Henry had piecing violet eyes, and curly black hair that went down to about his earlobes. He wore a red hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, and sneakers, much like every other person in the city. He smiled warmly, “Hello,” He said to Emily.

“Greetings.” Em muttered, crossing her arms.

“Emmy’s---“

“My name is Emily.”

“—Emmy’s gonna read It!” Todd exclaimed happily, holding up the red book that he'd given her the day past. Emily noted that a piece of paper had been taped to the front, on it was writing that she couldn’t read from where she stood.

“'It'?!”

Henry squealed like a child at Christmas when he found he didn’t get coal but that train set he’d always wanted, “Really?! Oh, wow! I remember when I read It, I was—“

“SHH!” Todd hissed, “If you tell her anything, it won’t work!”

Henry winced, “Right, right, sorry, sorry…”

“Will some-one please tell me what ‘It’ is, who ‘We’ are, and what ‘Our’ that I’m supposed to help!” Emily shouted, now deeply annoyed.

Henry and Todd exchanged glances, and then said at the same time, “We can tell you after you read It.”

Em groaned, “Fine. Whatever. Where’s 'It'?”

Todd shoved the red book into her hands, and lead her up the stairs, into a dimly lit hallway. Along the hallway were 4 doors. Todd lead her into the last on the right, shoved her in, and shut and locked the door behind her. “I’ll come back once you read it!” He sang, and then footsteps could be heard going downstairs, the TV was turned on, and Emily found out that Todd enjoyed watching Sponge Bob. She sighed and looked around the room—all it had was a bed and a dresser, and the single book that she held in her hands…..

Chapter 3; Odd Twists and Turns

A girl sat on her floor, in her little room, all alone. She sighed and looked around, causing her brown pony tail to whip around. Her room was empty, besides her bed and dresser, and a single book that was in her lap. On the cover read, ‘Dragons—all about, special facts, pictures, and clues to their existence’. She stared at the book with her large brown eyes and sighed. On the cover of the book there was a note, a note that read

WARNING: Do not open. This book contains information that will change your life and boggle your mind.

She bit her lip, and the reached down, and tore the note from the book’s cover. Holding her breath, she opened the book to the front page, and suddenly, her vision went black….and then suddenly, she could see again. She looked around, bewildered. Something was different—she could see everything more defined now. Brighter colors, sharper edges….And her eyes were a dark violet color? She gasped, and sat back. Suddenly, a knock at the door. She turned and said, “Come in, Todd.” For she knew it was her friend.

There was a sound like scales grating against metal, and the handle turned agonizingly slowly. And from behind the door, came a muzzle of a dragon. Emily screamed and stood, backing up, “Who’s there?!” She asked, still screaming a little. And then a small dragon came into the room—he was white-blond colored, two black horns curved out of its head, and had dark blue eyes. It laughed a familiar laugh and said, “Calm down, Emmy! It’s me, Todd!” It said in Todd’s voice.

Em screamed again, “You turned into a dragon!?!”

Todd rolled his eyes and sighed, “No. I am a dragon.”

Em screamed for a third time, “You’re a dragon!?”

“No, stupid, I’m a magical flying omelet. OF COURSE I’M A DRAGON, YOU NIT-WIT! Now stop screaming!”

Emily opened her mouth to scream again, but instead she fainted.

~*~

Henry ran up stairs with a bucket of ice-cold water in his hands. He sighed and glared at Todd when he rushed into Emmy’s room, “Why did you have to scare her like that?! She can See you now, and you have to scare her?!”

“Yup.”

Henry sighed, and shaking his head, dumped the water onto Emmy, “Wakey-wakey, Emily!” Emily sat bolt up, gasping from the coldness of the water. She saw Todd the dragon again, and screamed—again. “EMILY! Calm down! He’s just a dragon!”

“Just a dragon!? Some dragon-kid-thing-kidnaps me and he and his human accomplice hold me hostage until I read a book, all in the space of an hour, and I’M SUPPOSED TO CALM DOWN?!” Emily screeched, standing. Her newly dark violet eyes blazed.

Henry backed away, slightly frightened, “Uh….yeah….”

Emily turned and kicked the dresser a few times, “I’m. Not. CALMING. DOWN!” She yelled angrily, and with every word another kick. Todd put a hand, a human hand, on her shoulder, and she spun around, “WHAT?!”

“Emily. It’s OK.” He said quietly, sighing. He was in his human form, but from the way he squirmed and fidgeted, you could tell it wasn’t his favorite form.

“Ok?! OK?!” Emily shouted, “What in the world is going on?!”

Henry and Todd exchanged glances. Todd nodded, and Henry left the room. The dragon-boy turned to face Emily, “We need your help—“

“Yeah, I’ve got that part. But help with what?”

“The Egg.”

“Egg?”

He nodded, “The last Dragon Egg ever to be layed.”

Emily laughed, “Todd, okay, I’m going to wake up any second now from this weird dream, and when I do, I’m gonna punch you.”

Todd pinched her, and she yelped in minor pain. “You’re awake, stupid.”

Emily groaned, and just then Henry came into the room. In his arms was a large, white egg that had a black star on it. It shuddered and wiggled in his grip, and he looked to Emmy, “It says it wants you to hold it, Em.” And Emily, to this comment, just laughed. She thought she was going nuts.

Chapter 4; You’re not nuts, Emily!

“I’m going crazy. I think I watched waaaaaay too much TV last night.” Emily said, staring at the egg.

“No, you’re not going crazy Emily.” Henry said. He held out the egg to her. She shook her head, repeating that she was nuts. Henry sighed, “You’re not nuts, Emily!” She sighed and winced, but took the egg. She looked down at it, and smiled a little. “That is Zerostrung’s Egg. Her last ever egg, ever layed.” Henry explained slowly.

Emily looked up, “Who’s she?”

“The last ever female dragon. She died shortly after the egg was layed, and now the egg is all alone. It needs some-one to hatch it…”

“Me? How can I hatch the egg?”

Todd answered this question, “You are a descendant of—“

“Lemme guess, the first girl—“

“Man. Xaivior was a man.”

Her nose wrinkled, “First man to ever hatch a dragon?”

“Ding-ding-ding, we have a winner!” Todd cheered sarcastically.

She glared at him, and suddenly the egg rocked in her arms. She yelped, and then dropped it! “I DROPPED IT!” She cried, looking at the egg. It layed calmly on the floor, nothing seemed to have happened to it.

“YOU DROPPED IT!?” Todd screeched, so angry that he morphed back into his dragon form.

“I DROPPED IT!”

”YOU DROPPED IT?!”

“Yes, and I think we covered that by now!” Emily shouted. She knelt down next to the egg and stroked it, “It’s okay, little guy,” She cooed.

Todd and Henry rolled their eyes and yelled, “PICK IT UP!”

Emily winced and reached down to pick it up, but she suddenly gasped. There was a hairline-crack going from the top of the egg to the bottom. She wailed, “I BROKE IT!”

~*~

“Hatching. Not broken! HATCHING!” Todd cried, clapping his now human hands happily, “It’s hatching!”

“Oh!” Emily gasped, and stared at the egg. More and more cracks. Suddenly, a thought, “Why must I be here to hatch it?”

“Because without you, if you don’t Touch this dragon, it will die. Because only the descendants of Xaivior can hatch eggs.” Henry said airily. Todd hissed at him to get out of the room, and Henry ran down stairs.

“So I can poke the thing and leave?”

“No, Mind Touch.” Todd replied.

“Say what now?!”

“You must think to the dragon,” Todd explained with a sigh.

THINK?!” Emily wailed, “How am I supposed think to a dragon?”

“When it hatches, you’ll know.” Todd explained calmly.

Emily groaned, “Yeah, okay…” She murmured, and watched as even more and more and more and—suddenly, the egg almost burst open, and out tumbled onto the floor a pure white dragon, with little spikes down his back, and a black star on his head. He looked around, his eyes still shut, he squeaked.

Emily’s hearted melted, “Awwwwwww!” She cooed, and went to touch it.

The dragon nuzzled her hand, and giggled a little squeaking over and over again. Suddenly, Emily closed her eyes, and reached out to the dragon with her mind, …..Hello?

Hello, Emily! A little tiny voice, one of a small boy child, came back to her. Emily gasped. “It talked to me!” She squealed, and scooped the dragon up in her arms.

Todd watched, smiling, “Then you have Touched it, and it shall live.”

Emily wrapped the dragon in a pillow case up like a baby, and cradled it in her arms. “Oh, you’re so cute, aren’t you? So tiny—“

“Not for long. You do know how big dragons get, right?”

Then a thought hit Emily, and she blurted it; “How am I supposed to raise a dragon while living in a New York City orphanage?!”

Chapter 5; In which some things are explained, and a dragon is named.

“Uh….I dunno....!” Todd laughed nervously.

Emily sighed, and sat down on the rickety old bed that was in the room. “But how?”

“Well…once it is big enough we’ll have to keep it here.”

Emily nodded, and cradled the baby dragon in her arms, “Why can’t some other descendant take care of it? Why me?”

“You are the last one, Emily. The last of your Kind.”

“Wait—really?” Emily gasped in shock.

He nodded, “Yes. You father, John, was the second to last person who was capable of Hatching an Egg.” He explained slowly. “But he was taken by—“

“The bad guys?”

Todd nodded, “Yeah, the ‘bad guys’. They call themselves the Saviors of Mankind, or S.O.M,--“

Emily snort with laughter, “Oh, yes, the ‘S.O.M’ sounds very scary.” She said sarcastically.

“They are! This is no laughing matter!” He snapped. Emily muttered an apology, and stroked her dragon’s little muzzle as she listened, “The S.O.M took your mother and father when you were young, because they--the S.O.M, that is-- have thousands of dragon eggs.” He sighed, and the grinned, “But what they didn’t know that when a Hatcher’s child is born, all of their, the Hatcher's that is, power passes into the child.”

“So they think that Dad can still Hatch an Egg?” She asked, “What do they want with Mom?”

He shrugged, “They took your mother because they wanted you to perish all alone, because then power would return to your father.”

”Oh. Wow.”

“Yeah, wow is right! So they do know he’s powerless, they’ve tried many times to Hatch an Egg that would live. But they couldn’t, and eventually figure out that what we now know—only you, Emily, can Hatch an Egg.”

“Why do they want a dragon on their side?”

Todd sighed, “What does every bad guy ever want?”

“….to rule the world?” She replied slowly.

“Bingo!” Todd cried, sighing, “And their leader is….”

“The Infamous Man. Whatever, uh, the Magical Flying Omelet King?” She snorted with laughter.

“No, she’s a women. Her name is Donna Evil.”

“Irony?”

“No, her parents named her that.”

“She sounds pleasant!” Emily said, her tone was filled with false cheer.

“Oh, yes, very pleasant.” Todd snorted and shook his head, “The women wants to take over the world. And she only needs the power of one single dragon to do that…the dragon one Touched by the Hatcher.”

“I’m the Hatcher, right? Oh my! Then she wants Sirius!” She hugged the dragon close to her.

“Sirius?”

”I named him Sirius.” She replied matter-of-factly. “Because the star on his head—it reminded me of the North Star, Sirius.”

He smiled, “Good name choice.”

“Thanks. Where is this ‘Donna Evil’.”

“1,000 years in the future, year 3008, hiding some-where in the Rocky Mountains.”

Emily grinned, “Then we’re safe?”

“Nope.”

“Of course not…”

Chapter 6; My Dragon Burnt my Homework!

Part 1

“Oh no.” Emily said, looking at her watch. She was standing in the ‘living room’ of the book store, holding Sirius in her arms. The little dragon was still wrapped up in a pillow case, and was fast asleep, snoring softly.

“What?” Henry and Todd asked. They, Todd was in his dragon form, were lounging on the couch, watching TV.

“It’s 8 in the morning already! I’m going to miss my bus!”

Todd sat bolt up, “You can’t go to school with him!” He cried, shaking his head wildly, he transform to a human, “You can’t!”

”I have to. If I’m not at school, Principle Harmony will call Mrs. Caroline, and I’ll be dead meat walking!” Emily whined, “And I defiantly won’t be able to keep Sirius! I can’t even keep a cockroach as a pet!”

Todd handed her a backpack, “You must tell NO ONE about him! I repeat, NO ONE about Sirius.” He hissed, “Put him in your back-pack, you have to take him to school with you.”

“What!? Take Sirius to school!?” Emily gasped, “You’re crazy!”

Todd snatched away the dragon and the back-pack, gently put Sirius in the back-pack, and zipped it so there was a little gap for air to come in. “He’ll be fine. He’s asleep, I doubt he’ll wake up any time soon.” Henry, who’d fallen asleep, turned over muttering something. “Baby dragons are like Henry when he’s forgotten to have his morning cup of joe—they sleep for hours and then wake up, kind of hyper.”

Emily put the back-pack on her back nervously. “Okay…I’m not to sure abou—“

“Don’t worry, I’m coming with you,” The dragon-boy said, nodding. “You might want to read up on this, kid.” He handed her the red book. She flipped to the first page and skimmed it, it was about hatchings.

“Yeah, yeah, that already happened,” She murmured, and then flipped to a page about Dragon Powers. It read;

Dragons are usually born with 2-3 powers. Some of them are useful, like the following;

The power to—

Unlock doors.
Move things with the mind
Turn invisible
Time travel
Make things appear from thin air (This power is very rare, only one known dragon has ever been know to have it)
The power to control people and items (This is considered the most useful power ever discovered by Dragon Keepers. It is also very dangerous, for depending on who has the power, influences its decisions and how is affects the world.)

Emily gasped, she was slightly confused, “Wow! So that means….am I a Dragon Keeper?” She looked up at Todd from the book.

He nodded, “Yeah, of sorts. Some people call them ‘Dragon Riders’. Or just ‘a dragon’s human’. Common, we’re gonna be late!” He grabbed her wrist and dragged/lead her out of the book store and towards the bus stop.

Emily hurried after, shoving the book into her backpack, right next to the sleeping dragon. This should be interesting….

Part 2

Emily and Todd stood nervously at the bus stop, along with the other children. One of them, the same girl who’d made fun of Emily last time said, “Ew! Aren’t you, like wearing the same clothes you wore yesterday?!” The children around Todd and Emily burst out laughing. Emily looked down at her outfit. It was the exact same thing she’d worn the day before—she and Todd hadn’t had time to stop at the orphanage, she hadn’t changed. She nodded stiffly, and turned back to wait for the bus. Inside her backpack, Sirius slept soundly.

“Leave her alone.” Todd snapped at the girl.

“Why should I, Toad?”

“My name is TODD.” He hissed. A little puff of smoke curled from his nostrils.

“That’s what I said. Toad.”

He growled, “Watch it---“ Emily put a hand on his shoulder, she shook her head mouthing ‘No….’. He sighed, and turned back around. Soon the bus came to a halt in front of them, and the kids boarded the bus, Todd and Em heading straight for seat one. As the bus rumbled down the bus street, Emily set her back-pack on her lap and opened it, peering it. Sirius was still asleep, she smiled. Todd said, “Wow. He’s a sound sleeper.”

Emily shrugged, and zipped her backpack up again, she held it protectively. When the children got to school, it seemed as though Sirius was going to stay asleep the whole day. In fact, he almost did! But the key word in that sentence—almost. It was math class when it happened….

Emily sat calmly at her desk, looked down at her work sheet. On the floor next to her was her back-pack, slightly unzipped so that Sirius could breath easier. She scribbled the answer to her math problem on her paper;

(34 + 78 ) – (99 * 34)= 442

And suddenly her teacher, Mrs. Kinder screamed, “Emily! You’re back-pack’s ON FIRE!”

“What!?” Emily gasped, and looked down—the teacher was right; her back-pack was ablaze. She screamed and quickly reached in, grabbing the red book about dragons (which, amazingly, was unharmed) out and plunged her hand in for a second time, “Where’s Sirius?!” She screamed, the little dragon wasn’t there! Taking her hand out(which had been slightly burned) she yelped and looked around wildly.

“Sirius?!” Mrs. Kinder asked, as she ran for the fire extinguisher.

“He’s, uh, my pet newt.” Emily stuttered—she saw the end of a scaly white tail whip under Mrs. Kinder’s desk, she swallowed and groaned quietly.

“No pets aloud in school, Ms. Smith.” Mrs. Kinder snapped, she extinguished the fire. The other kids were watching, fascinated, for they had seen the little white dragon walk to the teacher’s desk. All eyes were trained on the desk, waiting for the dragon to appear again.

”Y-yes, Mrs. Kinder.” She mumbled, also looking to the desk. And suddenly, Sirius’s little head popped up over the edge. Emily gasped and thought to him, No no no! Down! Get back here!

What? Sirius tilted his head to the side, and the children waved and grinned, giggling and laughing. Mrs. Kinder spun around, and she saw the dragon. She screamed, and fainted, falling to the floor with a over-dramatic gasp. At this point, Todd came into the room—he’d been out to the restroom the whole time, and had finally come back. He saw Sirius, and groaned, “EMILY!”

The other kids were laughing, some screaming, and others, the boys, were going up to get a better look at Sirius. “No! Leave him alone!” Emily shouted, and running past the teacher’s passed-out body, went to the desk. She picked up the baby dragon, “Leave us alone!” More teachers could be heard running down the hallway towards the room, Emily looked to Todd, “What do we do!?!” She shouted over the rising level of noise in the room. Several flashes of light, a picture was taken of the dragon from a camera phone, and the dragon squeaked in surprise.

“WINDOW! OUT! NOW!” Todd roared, almost transforming into a dragon himself.

“WHAT!?!” But Em obeyed, and went over to a window. Thankfully, the classroom was on the first floor. She threw open a window, and climbed out, turning to help Todd out too. Todd ran to the school parking lot—straight for Mrs. Kinder’s car. Out of his pocket he fished a key ring that had a few keys on it. “Todd, we’re not going to do what I think we are….are we?”

He grinned, “Yes, we are, Em! Get in!” He opened the door for her, she climbed in and put her seat-belt on, and she held Sirius in her lap. Looking out of her window, Em could see the principal and several other teachers rushing towards them.

“HURRY UP, TODD!” She screamed, hugging little Sirius. He laughed, and jumped into the front seat, shutting the door behind him; he found the right key and turned the car on. “Do you even know how to drive?!?” Em yelled over the roaring engine.

He looked over at her, still grinning, “Nope.”

Chapter 7; Who Needs The Bus When You Have A Dragon-Boy For A Friend?

Emily screamed as the little car speed out of the parking lot and through a wooden fence. The car was one of those new ones, so tiny that only two people could fit in. Em gripped the seat with one hand, and held baby dragon Sirius with the other. Sirius was squeaking like crazy, he too seemed as upset and surprised as Emmy.

“YE-HAW!” Todd yelled as he drove the little car into the road. He was driving erratic, swerving and stopping suddenly, but he seemed to kind of get the hang of it. He must’ve been going at 70 miles per hour, for the little car seemed to fly just above the pavement. Emmy screamed again, and looked out her window to see if they were being followed or not. They were, and buy the Police no less! Three cop cars zoomed after them, shouting for them to pull over. “You’ll never catch me alive, coppers!” Todd cried out the window, laughing. He looked over at Emmy and giggled like a school girl, “I’ve always wanted to say that!” He got back to driving—they were now going through an area where traffic was starting to back up. “Uh-oh…”

Sirius squealed and struggled to get free of Emmy’s grip. “NO.” She said sternly, and wrapped both arms around the little dragon, “You aren’t moving AT ALL!” Sirius frowned, and sighed, he’d find a way to get out.

Suddenly, the traffic came to a stand-still. “Oh no!” Em and Todd said at the same time. The cops got out of their cars and ran for the tiny car. Suddenly, they stop and gasped. From the door of the car stepped a boy, a girl, and what seemed to be some sort of little robot dragon. The boy grinned, “Good day!” He called, and taking the girl’s handing, floated off the ground and away.

“The boy is flying!” Some-one who was standing on the side walk cried. All eyes turned to look up at the flying boy, and reporters snapped pictures.

“What are they talking about? You’re in your dragon form!” Em said to Todd, looking up at him with her dark violet eyes.

He laughed, “To them I am some magical boy who can fly, but to you, I am a dragon. You have Learned, you’ve Seen the Book, right? You have Violet eyes, correct?”

“Yeah…”

“So you can See me!”

“Why can they See Sirius as a dragon?”

“Because, he doesn’t have a human form yet. He’s too young to have one.” Todd explained.

”Oooh.” Emily replied, nodding. “I see.” She clutched Sirius with her free hand and looked around as Todd flew her over the high buildings. “You know this is probably gonna be on the news later tonight, right? ‘The boy who can fly,’?” She sighed.

Todd laughed, “Ah, yes. I know. But, hey, we’ll just lY low for a while—“

“How is it possible to ‘lay low for a while’ with a dragon!?!”

“I beg your pardon!” Todd snapped, “Don’t you mean two dragons?”

“Fine, how is it possible 'lay low for a while' with two dragons?!”

Chapter 8; Mrs. Caroline’s Wrath

Todd landed in the tiny, dirty back yard of the orphanage and laughed, “That was fun!” He said, as he morphed back into a boy.

Emily snorted, “Oh, yes, almost being arrested and getting detention for life is ‘fun’.” She held Sirius tight; he kept struggling to get loose.

“Uh, shyeah!” Todd cried, laughing. Emily failed to find this funny, though, and didn’t laugh, “Oh, common, Em!” He playfully punched her shoulder.

She ignored the punch and said, “Look, I’ve gotta get back to my room. I’ll see you…some-time…”

He snorted, little curls of smoke came from his nose, “What? You’re coming back to the Haven with me!”

“No. If I don’t come here, Mrs. Caroline will send the cops after me!”

“……”

“That’s a bad thing, Todd.”

“Your point?”

Emily groaned, exasperated. “I’ll try to come tomorrow after—wait, tomorrow’s Saturday! Yes! Okay, I’ll come to the Haven tomorrow.” She hissed.

Todd gave her a paper bag, “Put Sirius in here for now.”

She sighed, and shaking her head, put the little dragon in the bag—he was sleeping again. She turned, “Go.” She said without looking back.

And Todd left, leaving Emily Smith to face Mrs. Caroline on her own…..

~*~

“Where have you been you, child?!” Mrs. Caroline shrieked. She was a short old women, with salt-and-pepper hair and firey green eyes. She always was wearing something professional looking, like a pants suit or something on that order, and it just made her look even eviler. Her high pitched and strange sounding voice always made Emily jump, even though she knew it was coming.

“I-I was---“

“Who said you could speak, stupid girl!? I know where you’ve been!” She screamed, shaking a fist in the air. The two of them were standing in Emily’s room, Sirius was safely hidden under the bed. “With some flying boy, that’s where! He stole a car and kidnapped you, didn’t he? DIDN’T HE?!” She would never admit to anyone that the children she housed were up to no good, even if they were caught red-handed.

Emily, who knew better it was best not to argue with Mrs. Caroline, mumbled “Yes…”

“You are not leaving your room for the rest of the time that you are here!” She screeched, “You won’t get any dinner for a month, either! Nor breakfast!”

“But I’ll star—-“

“They feed you junk at school, correct?”

“Well----“

“CORRECT?”

“Yes, Mrs. Caroline.”

“You can eat there.”

“But what about on weekends?”

“You’ll just have to hope I’ll be nice enough to give you some water!” She screamed, and stomped from the room, she locked the door behind her.

Emily trudged over to the bottom bunk of her bed and crawled in, she groaned quietly. What was she going to do now?!

Sirius peeked his head out from under the bed, he squeaked. There was a rumbling sound, and he squeaked pleadingly.

“You’re hungry, aren’t you?”

He nodded, more rumbling.

She sighed, “I don’t have food. I got in trouble, no food for me now.” Sirius just replied with angry squeaks. “Do you want me to go on a suicidal mission!?! I’ll get thrown out if I---“ More pleading squeaks from the dragon, and Emily sighed. “Fine, fine.” She murmured, walking to the door. She tried the handle—it was locked. Of course. She looked over at him, “You got any ideas on how we get out?”

Sirius seemed to be grinning as he pointed a tiny, almost clear talon at the unlocked window. He squeaked.

“Yeah, good idea, little buddy. If we weren’t on the second story of this building, that is!”

Chapter 9; Good-bye, Mrs. Caroline!

Part 1

Emily tied her two blankets together, and looked at them. She showed it to Sirius, “Think it’s long enough?” He shrugged in reply as Emily went over to the open window. She dropped out, holding one end as the other fell, and to her despair, it didn’t reach the ground by about ten feet. She pulled her makeshift get away up back into her room and chewed on her lip. She looked to Sirius, who was whining loudly. “SHH!”

He stuck his tongue out at Emily, and sighing, he pointed a talon at the dresser.

“Ooh!” She cried, smacking her forehead, “Duh! Thanks,” She ran over to the dresser and pulled ever shirt she owned—which is an amazing number of five—out. She tied them to her ‘rope’ and threw the rope out of the window again, it was just long enough. She grinned, tied one end to one of the dresser’s legs, and let the other end rest on the filthy ground below. She turned to face Sirius, she looked at his tiny wings. “Can you fly, Siri?” ‘Siri’,( pronounced Sear-ee), is the nick-name she’d come up with for him.

The little dragon frowned, he unfurled his wings, and flapped them a bit—they made a leathery sound, he’d never used them before. He didn’t rise into the air, just sat there, wildly flapping his wings. He sighed.

“I’ll take that as a no…” She murmured, and wrapped the dragon in a tiny little blanket. She slipped on a sweat-shirt, and stuffed her back-pack with her belongings. She put Sirius in the back pack in such a away that his head was sticking out of the top. He squeaked a little as she hoisted the pack onto her back, and went to the window. “Shh!” Emily whispered. She tugged on the rope to make sure it was secure, and then began her long climb down…

Part 2

Emily looked up a little. She’d only climbed about 8 feet down, but she’d been climbing for an hour. She was frightened is why, she’s terribly frightened of climbing things. Sirius squeaked in annoyance, he wanted out of the backpack, and he was hungry! “Shh!” Emily hissed as she passed an open window. She peeked into the window and gasped—staring right back at her was Mrs. Caroline. But it wasn’t Emily she was looking at, it was Sirius. Emily screamed, and said, “Leave us alone, Mrs. Caroline!”

Mrs. Caroline laughed coldly, “I am not Mrs. Caroline, stupid child,” She grinned, flashing slightly pointed, bleached white teeth.

Suddenly it clicked for Emily. She was Mrs. Donna Evil! “You!” She cried, holding onto the rope with dwindling strength. “You’re…you have my Mum and Dad!” She felt tears stinging in her eyes. “Give them back!”

She cackled, shaking her head, “Give me the dragon, silly girl, and I’ll let you have your precious Mummy and Daddy.”

Give up Sirius?! She couldn’t! Though she’d only known the dragon for a short time, she loved it dearly…it had become a part of her. “I-I….”

“You can’t, can you child?” She laughed her strangely evil laugh again, “You can’t because you Touched it! Because now he’s a Part of You!”

Emily sniffed, she nodded, “And you won’t ever get him!” She shouted, and became hastily climbing down.

Donna grinned cruelly, “And you’ll never see your parents!” She screamed, shaking her hand. In her other hand, was a pair of sharp scissors, she was cutting madly at the ‘rope’….

Part 3

Emily yelped as she hit the ground a few seconds later. She looked up, Donna had cut it. Gritting her teeth, she stood, and her eyes grew wide as she realized her ankle was broken. She groaned loudly, and limped through the alley that she’d landed in.

Meanwhile, Donna was running madly down the stairs, she wanted to confront the girl herself.

Emily limped out of the alley way and stood uncertainly on the sidewalk. Night had fallen, and lights from many different sources illuminated where she stood, but just barely. She could see enough to see Donna burst out the front door of the orphanage and head right towards her. She gasped, and turned, desperately limping away. Donna laughed at her attempt, and continued running towards her.

Emily felt helpless. She moved as fast as she could away, but she knew it was hopeless. Sirius squeaked and hissed at the evil women, and then did something incredible—he shot flames from his mouth at her. Donna screamed a high-pitched scream and stumbled back, her pants were on fire. Emily stopped for a moment and looked back, she grinned. Her eyes turned to Sirius, “Did you do that?”

He nodded and thought to her, Yes, now go, stupid!

Emily giggled, and some how ran down the sidewalk as a fire truck screeched to life a few blocks away and flew up the street, a neighbor had called it. Soon, the Orphanage was out of Emily’s sight, and she was still going. She was lost, hopelessly lost, hungry, extremely hungry, and yet at the same time happy. She thought aloud, “Good bye, Mrs. Caroline.”

Chapter 10; Don’t EVER Give A Dragon Chocolate!

Part 1

Emily knocked on the door of Dragon’s Books at exactly 12:00 Midnight. She leaned against the door frame to take weight the weight off of her foot and calmly waited for some-one to answer the door. Sirius, who was awake and still hungry, whined and wiggled in her backpack. She sighed, “Sirius, calm down! I’m sure Todd and Henry have some food or something.”

Henry opened the door and smiled. He was wearing a tee shirt and sleep pants, his hair was a mess, and he yawned, “Oh, heyEmily, wha’swrong?” He asked, his words slurring because he was so tired.

Emily babbled out the situation, finishing with, “….so I came here.”

He laughed, yawning again right afterward, “Alright, alright,” He turned and bellowed, “TODD!”

Todd appeared at the doorway, in human form, in seconds. “Hey, Em.” He closed his eyes for a moment, and Em felt something touch her mind. “Ooh, broken ankle. Yikes. And Siri’s hungry?”

Em’s jaw dropped, “How’d you know that?!” She asked, though she knew the answer.

“You know how Sirius can talk to you and hear your thoughts?” Emily nodded. “Well, because I’m a dragon too, I can get in your thoughts, too.”

Emily blushed, “Don’t you dare say---“

“I won’t.” Todd grinned, and took her back-pack gently from her. “I’ll get Sirius some food for ya. Henry, you take care of her leg.”

Henry nodded, and picked Emily up before she could argue, and brought her into the ‘living room’

~*~

That next morning, Emily awoke in the same room that Todd had brought her to the other day. Her broken ankle was in a home-made cast like thing, there was a pair of wooden crutches next to her bed, and Sirius slept soundly at the foot of the bed. She smiled and glanced at her watch—it read 11:59. She grinned, giggling. This is the latest I’ve ever slept! She thought to herself as she set up in bed. Taking a hair tie from her wrist, she tied her brown hair back into a pony tail and looked around the room. It was the same as she’d left it, except the red book was on a table next to the bed, and her back-pack was on top of the dresser. She reached over at grabbed it, and propping up her pillows to lean against, she flipped to a page and began to read….

Meanwhile, Sirius had woken. He stood and stretched like a cat, yawning. He tilted his head to the dresser and sniffed. What was that sweet thing he smelled? Certainly such a thing must be heavenly to smell so good! He wandered to the dresser and peered at the back-pack. So that’s where the smell was coming from! He looked at Emily for a moment, and then with one ungraceful leap landed on top of the dresser. He stuck his head inside the back, and sniffed around….Oh! There it was! A half-eaten Hershey’s Chocolate Bar! And just as Sirius found this, Emily read what the book called the ‘number 1 most important rule on what not to do with your dragon’.

Rule #12—the number one most important rule—: Never, EVER give a dragon chocolate! He/She WILL become extremely hyper, and can/will cause extreme damage.

Emily took note of this, and then looked up. “Sirius! What are you do—oh no!” Emily cried as her dragon pulled his muzzle from her back-pack. His entire face was smeared in chocolate, and he seemed to be vibrating with suddenly energy. He grinned broadly. “Sirius, did you just----?!”

Emily! Emily, what is this stuff?! He thought to her, then without a second thought, zipped from the room in a white scaly blur.
Part 2

Sirius was literally bouncing off the walls that morning. By the time he reached the bottom of the steps, not a picture was left hanging in the hallway. And Emily hobbled after him, but stopped for a moment when she reached the stairs. She sighed, and went to take a step when—“Ahhh!” She found herself tumbling madly down the steps, head over heels. She landed in a heap at the bottom, and groaned.

Meanwhile, Sirius was bounding around the book shop, knocking every single book from the shelf. Henry rushed out of the kitchen, a frying pan with a half-cooked omelet in his hand, “What in the name of----!?” Before he could finish, Sirius had zipped over and eaten the omelet, then zipped away back into the living room. “Hey! That was my lunch!” Henry shouted after him, annoyed.

Todd came running down the steps, tripped over Emmy, he fell flat on his face. “You gave it to him, didn’t you?!” He roared standing and pulling Emmy to her feet.

“I didn’t give it to him, he found it himself! It was in my back-pack and----“

“Who keeps chocolate in their back-pack!?”

“---and he went in there all by himself and ate it before I could do anything and---“ She was interrupted again by the sound of the little bell that hung over the door, and Henry shouting, “HEY, GET BACK HERE YOU EGG-THIEF!” Seconds later, Henry burst into the room, still holding his frying pan, and babbled something about Sirius escaping and heading towards central park. Todd and Emily gasped, both screaming at the same time: “WHAT?!?”

Part 3

Sirius, who’d grown over night to be about the size of a medium sized dog, bounded down the crowded streets of NYC. People screamed and leaped left and right out of his way, scared out of their wits. They though; Surely that can’t be a dragon! Dragon’s do not exist! It must just be some sort of dog…And after the dragon passed, they’d calm and go back to normal. But soon after the dragon, through the crowds came a 20-year-old man, followed by a 13-year-old boy who was helping a limping 13-year-old girl jog after the dragon. “Move out of the way!” Henry shouted, elbowing and shoving people ruthlessly. “Trying to get through here!”

Emily groaned as they continued on. Sirius, get back here! NOW! She thought to the dragon angrily. But the little white dragon with a black star on his forehead just ignored her, and he kept running down the street, towards the park for some reason. So the chase continued on…

~*~

Some time later, Sirius arrived in Central Park. He chirped and looked around happily, shuffling his wings and he sauntered around. Dogs barked and squealed when they saw him, immediately running away. Humans who saw him either rubbed there eyes and muttered to themselves, ‘I think I need to get out more often, I’m seeing things!’ and went back to their business or they’d scream and run away. So Sirius pretty much had the park cleared out of visitors by the time Emily, Todd, and Henry arrived.

“Sirius, you’re in BIG trouble!” Todd shouted, morphing into his dragon form. He growled fiercely at the baby dragon, little puffs of smoke coming from his muzzle.

Sirius squealed, he was now out of energy, and no longer hyper. He opened his mouth, and surprisingly, talked! “I’m sorry!” He voice was but a squeak.

Emily couldn’t help but say; “Oh, it’s okay, Siri.” She picked him up as best as she could, she hugged him.

“Okay?! OH-KAY!?” Todd roared, rearing up on his hind legs. He was only about as tall as Henry in dragon form, and Henry was only about 5’ 9”. So he wasn’t that scary, even though he was trying to be.

“Yes, it’s fine, he didn’t mean it, did you boy?” Emily cooed, tickling the dragon under his chin.

“Sorry!” He squeaked, sniffling. “Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!”

Emily looked up at Todd, “Oh, cool it. Nothing bad happened, he just---“

“Was seen by every person in the city!” Todd ranted, in human form now he crossed his arms.

Henry placed a hand on Todd’s shoulder, “Todd, seriously, calm down, no damage was done, I’m sure---“

Todd shook off his hand, transforming into a dragon he glared at Henry, “Leave me be. I’ve got to go clean up his mess.” He glared at Sirius, who shrank back repeating that he was sorry, and flew off.

“Todd! Wait!” Emily called, sighing.

“Don’t worry, he’ll be back. He just needs to go cool off for a while. He’s a real Drama King.”

Emily giggled, shaking her head. “No, he’s the Magical Flying Omelet King.”

“What?!”

“Don’t ask….!”

Chapter 11; Dark Plans And Wacky Weather

A week passed, and still no sign of Todd. Henry, Sirius, and Emily stayed hidden in the Haven while he was gone and Sirius became the size of a small motorcycle. Emily now was sitting her room, looking out of her window. She was worried sick about Todd for a reason she couldn’t name—she sighed.

Sirius was in the living room with Henry, the two were having a chat about the weather. Lately, it had been going hay-wire. Snowing one second, raining the next, sunny three minuets later, and then hailing! “….I mean, much more of this and we’ll need to fix the roof,” Henry was exclaiming, he sighed.

Sirius nodded. He was in his human form, a boy as tall and old as Emily, he had piercing blue eyes and red hair, and freckles. His grin was broad and toothy, and his laugh was loud and booming. He sighed, “I just wonder what’s causing it….it’s really making me curious not to know for some reason….” Just as he said the word 'curious' it began to hail and rain.

Henry groaned, “There it goes again!” He cried, looking up at the ceiling.

Sirius laughed, and suddenly it all stopped once more, “And there it stops, again!” He said, still laughing, a rainbow formed high in the sky.

“That is just WEIRD.” Henry muttered, staring at Sirius for a long moment.

“What?” Siri asked, “Why you lookin’ at me?”

“Because…where’s Em’s Book?”

“Up stairs…why?”

“Get it.”

“Answer my questions first!” He crossed his arms, being stubborn as usual.

“Book first, question last.”

He growled, turning, marched up the stairs, down the hallway, and burst in Em’s room. “Book. Need it. Now.”

Emily snorted, “You know, it’s possible to speak in complete sentences and have some manners.” She tossed him the red book. Sirius mumbled a ‘Whatever….’, turned on his heel, and ran down the stairs.

“Here. Answer my questions now!” He tossed Henry the Book.

Henry flipped to the page labeled, ‘Unusual Powers that a Dragon may have’ He skimmed down the page, reading aloud;

‘Unusual powers that dragons may have are

The power to:
Make things turn to candy at will
Shoot lasers/rocks/lightening/other things from tail and/or mouth or talons
Take pictures with mind
Teleportation by sneezing
Change own/others sizes
Make random objects appear any where
Control people with songs
Control the weather with feelings/at will’

“HA! That’s it, Siri! That’s your First Power! You can control the weather!” Henry cried, laughing, “No wondering why it’s been so odd lately! Because you haven’t harnessed it yet!”

Sirius, in human form, scratched his head, “Wow!” He exclaimed, laughing. The clouds disappeared, and the sun seemed to get a little brighter.

Part 2

Donna Evil paced in her office in the orphanage. She sighed, clasping her hands behind her back, she continued to pace. She was thinking…thinking…she turned to face Todd, who was tied to a chair in the room. “….so the Hatcher was under my nose the whole time, and you kept her from me?” She hissed.

Todd nodded, “Yes. I don’t work for you, and you know it! I work for King Herald and Queen Ellexis.”

The witch sighed, clicking her tongue, “I know. But why do you protect her? Hm? You didn’t do this for Brian, her father.” Todd looked away, he said nothing. “I know why, stupid boy. You happen to like her, no?”

“No. I don’t.” His cheeks turned crimson. He was in his human form, he was growing to like the form, but it made him defenseless and his feelings showed much easier than if he was a dragon.

She snorted, “As if I shall ever believe that. You’ve been here for a week and still have said nothing of their location. I doubt you will, too. But remember,” She leaned forward so her face was inches from his, so close that he could smell her rancid breath, “if I don’t get what I want soon, I will harm her.”

Todd winced. Whether it was her breath, her evilness, or that she’d hurt Em, he didn’t know. “Sure you will.”

“Go!” She screeched, throwing open the window, she untied him, “Go you foolish dragon-boy. Out of my sight.”

“You know that I’m part dragon and part boy?” He asked, confused.

She cackled, “I was the one who turned you from a boy to a dragon, Todd. NOW GO!”

He transformed to a dragon, and said, “I’ll get my revenge some day!” He flew out the window and towards the Haven as fast as he could. Little did he know, a tracking device had been placed on the back of his neck........

She grinned, wringing her hands, she paced once more, “Phase 1 is complete.” She said to herself, laughing, “Phase 2 shall begin when he gets to his little Haven….!”

Chapter 12; A Past in Revealed as Phase 2 is in Action

“Where were you!” Emily shouted. She had her hands in her hips, she was glaring at Todd, who’d just flew in her bedroom window at the Haven. He transformed into a human in and crossed his arms.

“I was being held hostage, not that you’d ca---“

“WHAT?!” Em gasped, “By wh—Donna?”

“Ding-ding-ding, we have a winner! You win the grand prize of----“

“Why did she want you?”

“---nothing! Anyway, she wanted me, because she wants to get to you. So thanks, you're the reason I got held hostage--”

Emily groaned, “You aren’t making any sense here!” She cried, crossing her arms.

Todd sat down on the edge of her bed and ran his hands over his face. “It’s a long story, Emmy.”

She pulled up an old chair and sat down in front of him, “I have the time.”

Todd sighed, “My story starts with this fact; In year 2121, robots take over the world---“
Emily snorted with laughter, “I’m not the brightest bulb, Todd, but I’m smart enough to know that that couldn’t happe…..” She trailed off as she saw an angry look grow on Todd’s face, he was serious. “….continue….”

“---and there was a huge war against them and us, humans. So after we humans won the war, all technology was destroyed. Now the future is like the middle ages. Magic, dragons, fairies and such are no longer myths, and we live at peace with them.”

Em frowned, “I’m confused about two things; One, how do you know these things? And two; You’re calling yourself a human. Why? I thought you were a dragon….”

Todd felt himself sigh a long, drawn-out sigh, “Well…I am a human. A Prince, actually. Prince Todd Kelin, from year 3,008.” He let Em gasp in surprise before continuing, “My parent’s—Ellixis and Harold—govern a kingdom where the Un-tied States—“

“United, Todd. United.”

“Right, right United States currently is, called Zanzi. It’s a beautiful country, and we were at peace for many, many years. That is, of course, until Donna became evil. She used to work as a scullery maid for me and my parents, and I used to boss her around and be quite rude to her---“

“No surprise there.”

He shot a glare at her, “---little did I know she was a witch. So one day, I teased her for the last time. I put a spider in her hair, she’s DEATHLY afraid of spiders. She went berserk, nearly killing my parents trying to get the stupid thing out, and then nearly skinned me alive for putting it in her hair! So then….my parents fired her….and she became bitter and ugly, inside and out, and she wanted revenge….”

Emily nodded, “By turning you into a dragon?”

He shook his head, laughing sadly, “No. She kidnapped me, and demanded my parent’s ruling rights. Either that, or she’d kill me, right? They wouldn’t give up their power…not even for me….” He sighed again, tears in his eyes. “….I wasn’t their favorite son. In fact, I was probably their least favorite. I was bad, I made huge messes, I wouldn’t learn to be the nwxt King like my father wanted….so by now, Donna was furious. She couldn’t get their power by trade, so she’d take it by force…She turned me into a dragon-boy, or as they call it in Zanzi---a freak.”

Emily took this all in after a moment of silence. She wanted to say something nice, like ‘You’re not a freak…’ but instead, she said, “A freak? Huh, fits you perfectly.” He shot a venomous glare at her, and she flinched. Changing the subject: “How can you come back to this time, then, may I ask?”

“All dragons, whether half-dragon or full dragon, have powers. I happen to have the power of time-travel.”

“Why do you need me, though? Aren’t there any descendants in the future from me that can, ya know, Hatch?”

He shook his head sadly, “Donna kills you, Emily. You are the last Hatcher. She kills you and goes back to the future, using Sirius, he happens to have time-travel as one of his powers, and then she’ll take over my parent’s kingdom with Sirius’s third power; The power to control some-one with his mind.”

Em’s eyes became wide, “What….?!” She whispered, putting a hand over her racing heart. “But…you came back to make sure this didn’t happen?”

He nodded.

“How do you know that this’s happened?”

“Because in my time, it’s already happened…….” The tiny tracking device beeped loudly and suddenly and Todd jumped, “What the----!?!”

And then, a figure appeared in the doorway. It cackled, and said, “And in this time, it’s about to happen!”

Chapter 14; Dragon’s Aren’t The Only Ones, Silly Girl!

Part 1

Emily came-to in an old farm house far, far away from the city. She groaned softly. Where was she, exactly? In a…attic, she decided. There were boxes every where, filled with what seemed to be old toys and clothes, and everything was covered in a thick layer of dust. She looked down; her one hand was chained to a pipe that ran against the wall. She sighed, and went from laying flat on her back to kneeling on the old wooden floor boards. She was lonely, confused, and her head was pounding. What had happened?
Suddenly, there was a tiny knocking sound coming from a little window near-by.

“Hello?” A small voice called. It was sweet and light, like a chime or bell.

Emmy froze, she looked to the window—it was too dirty to see out of, but clearly there was something there. “Yes…?” She whispered.

There was a giggle, and a little spot of the window was suddenly cleaned. A little face was pressed up against the glass. It had pointed ears, fine lips, and large gray eyes. Some flaming red hair was also to be seen, and there was a grin on that face. “Hi there!”

“Um, hello there,” Emily said, looking at the tiny face with her curiosity-filled dark violet eyes. “Who are you?”

“*Mystheart.” She answer, giggling. “You are Emily, no?” She had a very odd accent…something between British and French, or even a combination of the two.

“Yes, I am Emily Smith,” She said, tilting her head to one side, “What are you?”

Another giggle, this one loud, almost hysterical. “A Sprite!” She replied, and started working on opening the window, “Your kind calls us Fairies, but we call ourselves sprites.”

“Oh…!” Emily was stunned, she sat there and watched.

The Sprite pried the window open, and flew in. She was about 6 inches in height, and had wings like a butterfly that were a misty gray color at the top, and faded to crimson red at the bottom, with little patterns of hearts all over them. She wore a white dress that was down to above her knees, and little red slippers. Her hair was just past her shoulder, and she smiled, “Ah, no we can see eye to eye, eh?”

Emily fainted.

Part 2

The Sprite stood on at the base of Emily’s neck, her hands on her hips, “AHEM!” She said for the hundredth time, “You can wake up now, silly girl!”

Emily’s eyes fluttered open, she sighed, “Sorry about that, it’s just that Fairie—Sprites, sorry, I never thought they existed…!”

She snorted, and flew in place a few inches from the girl’s face, her wings beating slowly, “You have a dragon, you know a Prince who is half-dragon and can travel through time, yet you didn’t think that Sprite’s were real?!”

“Um…no?”

She laughed, a light and pretty little laugh, “Dragon’s aren’t the only ones, silly girl!”

“So….things like unicorns---“

“I am friends with several---“

“---and griffins---“

“---yep! I don’t know any, but I’ve heard from people who do know them---“

“---ogres and giants?”

She shuddered, nodding, “Nasty brutes they are, but yes, with my line of work I’ve met many,” She examined her nails as she talked.

“Centaurs?”

“Ooh, yes!” She swooned, “Such amazing creatures they are!” She giggled.

“Um….witches and wizards?”

“Do you really need me to answer that one?!” She laughed, “Of course! That Donna woman is a witch!”

Emily laughed for the first time in a week, “Alright, I could go on forever guessing different creatures, right? So I’ll just ask one question: Are all the fairy-tale creatures real?”

She grinned, crossing her arms, “We are, Emily! And we’re here to help you, trust me!”

“We?”

Chapter 15; Us!

“Us!” Two more creatures flew into the room. One was a Sprite, like Mystheart. Except he had bright yellow hair, and wore a flowing yellow shirt and pants that seemed to be made of spider’s silk. He had butterfly like wings, too, but they were much smaller than hers. And, he was a bit bigger—about a 6 inches bigger. The second creature was not a Sprite, but a phoenix. He was about the size of your average toaster, and had amazing, brilliantly blue feathers. His eyes were blazing yellow, and his black talons were razor sharp. He clicked his golden beak and looked at Emily with interest. “This is Bluefire,” The second Sprite said, gesturing to the bird, “And I am Sunlion.”

Emily nodded, “I’m Emily. Pleasure to meet you. Two questions; One, why are you bigger than Mystheart, Sunlion? And two; who sent you to help me?”

Sunlion glanced at Mistheart, who shrugged and whispered something in his ear. He chuckled. “I see.” He said to her, waving his hands reassuringly. He turned to face Emily once more, “Prince Todd sent us. And not all Sprites are small. Some of us are as large as your kind, when they are adults.”

“You know Todd?!”

He chuckled again, his short hair was being ruffled in the light breeze coming from the window. “Todd made a few friends back home in Zanzi, when his parents let him out of the castle.”

Mystheart gasped, and punched Sunlion’s shoulder, “We forgot to tell her!”

“About wha—oooh!” He smacked his forehead, “And there was no need for the punch, Mother said tha---“

“Mom’s not here right now, is she?” Myst snapped, crossing her arms. The two began to bicker.

So they were brother and sister! That explains a few things!….not really….Emily thought, sighing, “Forgot to tell me what?”

They glared at each other for a moment, and then stopped. Sun spoke up first, “Forgot to tell you that your parents are here.”

Emily gasped, “What?! No way! Where? Like, here-here?”

He nodded, “Here-here!”

Her eyes grew wide, “Like here-here-here?”

He laughed, “Like, here-here-h----“

Myst groaned, “YES! HERE-HERE-HERE! In this room!” She looked to Bluefire, who’d been preening his feathers and said, “Move those boxes, please.”

He clicked his beak with annoyance, but moved the boxes she asked of any way. And there, behind them, sat to adults. One was a women with long, thick brown hair that went past her shoulders. She had green eyes that were speckled with blue, and wore an old yellow sun-dress. It seemed like she hadn’t moved in years, much less changed or taken a much-needed shower. She looked up, both her hands were chained to a pipe. She smiled weakly when she saw Emily, and looked over, to the man that sat next to her, “Wake up, Kev! Emily’s here!”

The man groaned, and looked up. His brown eyes seemed to sparkle when he saw Emily. He, like his wife, had brown hair that was a little bit long, as if he hadn’t had a hair cut in a long time. He was also in good need of a shave, and he looked extremely tried. He wore a plain white t-shirt, and a pair of old-style jeans. He too seemed like he’d been wearing the same thing for years on end. “Anna, you weren’t kidding!” He would’ve waved, but his hands were also chained to an unseen object.

Anna and Kevin. Her parents! Emily really did have parents! She smiled, and waved with her free hand, “Hi Mom! Hi Dad!” She said, giggling.

Anna and Kev smiled and looked back at her. “I’m so sorry…” Kev began with a sigh.

“Sorry for what?” Emily asked, completely ignoring the other beings in the room.

“…that you got dragged into this,” He gestured with his head to what was around him.

“Oh, honey, don’t say that!” Anna said, looking over at her husband with a sigh, “What your father means is he’s sorry that you ended up getting captured, sweet heart,” She said to her daughter.

Em shrugged, “S’okay. It puts a little adventure in life, no? Are you guys alright here?”

“Fine, fine. We get food every day and stuff, don’t worry.” Her mother replied.

“AHEM.” Went Myst, tapping her foot impatiently mid air. “Donna’ll be up any second, so can we save the heart-warming family reunion for later, please?”

Sun chuckled, “She gets easily annoyed. Sorry, but yes, we should kind of hurry things up.”

Emily nodded, and looked to her mother again, “I’ll bust you guys out of here, don’t worry!” She said, and looked away. It was at that very moment something in one of the boxes caught her eye. It was an egg! Shinny, round, and sea-foam green, it was an egg, just like Sirius’s egg. She took note of it, and was about to reach up with her free hand and grab it. But suddenly---foot steps, coming up the stairs.

A familiar voice screeched: “What’s going on up there?”

Chapter 16; Well, Look Who The Cat Dragged In! Prince Todd!

Part 1

Em gasped, and reached up, grabbing the egg. She shoved it in the pocket of her sweat-shirt and hissed to her Sprite friends, “Hide!” Without a second thought, the brother and sister dove into the nearest box. The phoenix, on the other hand, flew out the window and sat on the roof. Emily slumped down and pretended to be asleep, as did her parents.

And just then, Donna opened the hatch-like door that was in the floor-boards of the room, and climbed in. “What is going on here?!” She screeched. Her hair was matted and greasy looking, she wore an old-fashioned scullery maid’s dress, her normal wear, and black slipped-like shoes. She looked around, “ASLEEP?! You cannot be asleep, foolish humans! You were just awake a few seconds ago, I heard chatter!”

Emily gritted her teeth, and sat up, “What do you want from me?” She asked bravely.

“Your dragon, sweetheart,” She said with a false motherly tone, “That’s all I need. I just want little ‘Sirius’.”

“Never!” She screamed. She picked up an old base-ball and chucked it at the women’s head.

The witch cried out at the ball hit right above her left eye, “OUCH! Why you little---“

“Leave her alone, Donna!” Kevin croaked, struggling to sit on his knees. His voice sounded as if he hadn’t used it much in so long that now, using it just for a little while wore it out.

“Hush up, you!” She screamed at Kevin, and turned back Emily, “You shall pay this time, girl! When your little friend comes to rescue you, you will pay!”

A trap! Emily thought, her eyes wide, So that’s what this is! A trap!

Part 2

Todd flew low over a used road, that lead towards the where Emily was being held hostage. He was in dragon form, of course, and so was Sirius, who was flying next to him. What about Henry, you may ask? Henry was sitting on Todd’s back, leaning forward and letting the wind tug at his hair. He grinned. He and Todd hadn’t flown in a long while. Not since they were back at home.

Home…Henry was a butler to Todd’s family, and naturally went everywhere with Todd. The two were good friends, but they bickered often. Especially when they were at the castle. Henry sighed and looked over to Sirius, You okay with all this flying?

Fine, fine. Sirius replied. He seemed edgy since Emily had been taken, and the sky was filled with nervous gray clouds. He missed her, and it hurt him to have her so far away from him. He sighed shakily.

Todd was faring no better than Sirius. He too seemed edgy, and kept looking around him like he was expecting something to come out from no-where and get him. He shook off the feeling with a shudder and continued. Soon, an old farm house came into his view. He reach out with his mind, and felt Em, her parents, Donna, and a few other people milling around the house. He gritted his teeth. This was going to be harder than he'd hoped it be.

“Where do we land?” Sirius asked, looking at the ground longingly.

“There.” He pointed a talon to the near-by forest. He turned a bit, and dove down almost vertically towards the patch of trees. Sirius came up behind Todd. He was a bit better at flying than his friend, since he was a real dragon. “Hang on tight, Henry!” The dragon-boy called.

Henry clutched one of the many spikes that ran down Todd's scaly back and nodded, “I am!”

Sirius landed first and immediately layed down and pulled in his swore wings. He groaned softly, “I’ve never flown that far in my entire life!” He complained.

Todd landed second, and couched down so that Henry could jump off. He transformed back to his true form, a white-blond haired boy and stretched. “Oi, I know what you mean,” He said absentmindedly.

Sirius looked over at Todd, and for a moment connected to his thoughts. What he heard made him laugh; he shook his head, “Are you ready to go save her, my friend?”

Todd felt himself blush horribly; he knew what the dragon had found. He nodded, smiling weakly, “Yes. Common,” He turned on his heel, and headed out of the little clearing in the little forest, towards that old farm house…

Part 3

“What are you doing here?” The man growled. He was face to face with Todd, in fact he was currently pinning Todd up against a tree. He was the same exact man who captured Emmy.

“Rescuing my friend.” Replied Todd, struggling to get down. This was one of the many moments that he hated being so short. He looked at the man with pleading dark blue eyes, his eyes looked shiny because of his large round-rimmed glasses, “Please let me go,” He said calmly.

He rolled his eyes, “Will you people ever learn?!” He snapped, “We are not here to ‘please let you go’.” He closed his eyes and continued to rant.

What he didn’t notice was Todd was wriggling out of his old, ratty sweat-shirt as the man went on. He dropped to the ground, shivering in his tee-shirt. Looking up at the man, he saw that his eyes were still closed and he was still going on and on, pinning the sweat-shirt to the tree. A broad grin spread on Todd’s face, and he crept away, out of the forest. His friends—Sirius and Henry, that is—were waiting atop the roof of the house for him.

Suddenly, a shout of absolute anger from the forest. “WHERE DID YOU GO?!?” Todd silently laughed and ran towards the house. He was almost there, too, when he was tackled to the ground. “Looking for this?” His sweat-shirt was tied over his eyes by unseen hands, and his hands were bound behind his back. Then, poor Todd was lead into the house and into what seemed to be a dining room. Of course he couldn’t see this, he was still ‘blind’. “STAY. HERE.” The voice barked, shoving him into a chair.

Todd sighed, and stayed seated. There was no use in trying to escape now, was there? So he waited for what he didn’t know would come. Then, there was voices. Foot steps. The sound of a chair in across from him being dragged across the floor until it was a yard away from him. And finally, a voice;

“Well, look who the cat dragged in! Prince Todd.”

Chapter 17; Let’s Make A Deal…

Part 1

“It is I. What do you want?” Todd snapped as his sweat-shirt was taken from his eyes. He found his feet were tried to the legs of the chair, and he couldn’t get up. He was face to face with Donna.

“Your powers, my silly little friend.” She cackled.

He looked up with large eyes, “What?!”

“I’m going to offer you a deal.” The old hag said. She stood, and strolled around him in a tight circle, “I won’t harm your precious Emily. Or her parents. Or her stupid dragon. No, I’ll let them all go, and live a free life and never bother any of them ever again.”

Todd eyed her with hopeful curiosity, “What’s the catch?”

“I’ll take away the dragon curse. But then you will help me by convincing your parents to give me their rule. Then, when I’m done with you, I’ll kill you.” She said flatly, examining her long and disgusting nails.

All the color drain from Todd’s face. He hung his head, and thought a while. What to do, what to do? After what seemed like hours, he looked up at the witch and sighed, “I’ve made my decision…”

Part 2

“….I’ll do it.”

“Really?” The women asked, surprised, “You will?”

He nodded, “I will. On one condition….”

“And what’s that, my boy?”

“That you let me see Emily before we go.”

“Deal,” She cackled. And then she stood in front of him, “This will only hurt a lot,” She assured and held both hands, palms out, to him, at his chest. She closed her eyes, and began muttering things. Magical things. Things that men have killed to hear, to write down, to know and use. A bright blue orb formed on her palms. It slowly made its way towards Todd.

Todd watched with wide eyes, the whole thing reflecting in his glasses. He gasped, “Wait, what’re you—AH!” The orb hit him in the center of his chest, and passed slowly through him. The pain was immense, he yelled and screamed. And then, it was over. Gone. He wasn’t half dragon anymore. He felt weak, he groaned and his head nodded forward, “What…what happened?” he mumbled before passing out cold.

“Men! Take him to the attic to see his little friend!” The witch barked, striding from the room. “The cruse is gone, silly child. You are part dragon no longer.”

Chapter 18; To The Future!

Todd woke up in the attic. He groaned softly, and sat up. He was in the middle of the room, and from his perch atop of card-board box he could see Emily, her parents, and thankfully no S.O.M goons.

“Todd? Todd, you alright? You don’t look so good…” Em said, frowning.

“I'm fine, Em,” He muttered, hopping down from the box. His face was pale and he felt weak. Without his dragon powers, he was just your average, really short and venerable 13-year-old Bully-Target.

She shrugged, and looked over to her parents—they were sleeping. Donna had given them some type of potion, and they’d fallen asleep. She sighed, “Can you get me outa here?” She whispered to her friend.

“Yeah, yeah.” He knelt down next to her and drew a pocket knife from his pocket, and began to saw away at her restraints. “You know, this is the last time I’m going to save you. Next time, save yourself, I got my dragon powers taken away--thanks to you.” He hissed.

Em winced and glared at him, “Well, sor-ree.” She muttered, sighing. “Just hurry up. Sirius says that he can hear Donna thinking about sending some-one up to get you in a few seconds.”

Todd tensed, “A few seconds?!” He said, cutting the last bit of rope. He looked to her parents and pushed his glasses up a bit, “Should we save them, too---“

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” Donna roared, appearing suddenly in the room, “SETTING HER FREE?! I KNEW YOU COULDN’T BE TRUSTED!” She looked angry enough to explode. Em’s eyes widened and she crawled backwards and Donna barreled towards her. “YOU HAVE THE EGG, DON”T YOU?! I KNOW YOU DO!” The old women screeched. “GIVE IT BACK, EMILY SMITH! GIVE ME BACK THE DRAGON’S EGG!”

Suddenly, Emily laughed. She never thought she’d ever hear that sentence be said. “Never!” She cried and dove from the room, Todd and the two Sprites at her heels. “We’ll be back, Mom, Dad! We’ll save you!” She yelled and she ran wildly through the house, looking for a way out.

“GET BACK HERE!” The old women screamed as she stumbled after them. Todd and Em, to this day, say they’ve never heard a louder scream than that of Ms. Evil’s.

“Why should we?” Todd responded, leading Em through the hallways at top speed. Finally, the front door was in sight. But in front of it stood a hulking henchman. “Move!” Todd shouted.

The goon chuckled, and was about to say something when he was roughly pushed away from the door from behind—in the doorway stood Henry. He laughed at Todd’s stunned expression, “Master Todd, I know, I didn’t think I could do it either,” He said. “COME!” He turned and bolted from the house.

“'Master Todd'?!”

“I’ll explain later, common!” Todd grabbed her hand and dragged her from the house, running as fast as he could. Emily shrugged and followed, as did the Sprites.

“I’ll stay here, Myst. Go with Em. I’ll keep the Old Hatcher and his wife safe!” Sun said, putting a hand on his sister’s shoulder, “Okay?”

Myst sniffed, nodding, “I’ll miss you, brother. Luck!” She smiled and flew after Em as Sun flew back into the attic.

Sirius glidded down from the roof and landed in front of Todd, Em, and Henry, “Get on! Now! We must escape before She comes!” He pointed a talon at Donna, who was quickly advancing.

Emily nodded and hopped on in front, Todd behind her, and lastly Henry with Myst perched on his shoulder. “Where are we going?” Em cried and Sirius shot off.

“To the future!” Todd cried, shooting his fist into the air, “Home!”

“GET BACK HERE!” The old hag screeched. “YOU WILL PAY, SILLY CHILDREN! YOU WILL PAAAAAAYYYYY! YOU CAN RUN, BUT YOU CAN’T HIDE FROM ME!” She stood on the ground and stared up at them, shaking her fists.

“Man, she creeps me out!” Henry said with a shudder. As Sirius rose higher and higher, Donna’s cries became just a whisper on the rushing wind.

“Now, we’re going to the future? Why?” Em asked.

“We can’t stay in this time, Em. You’ve found one of The Eggs, we must go back! Plus, Donna’s here, so it’s too dangerous to stay….” Todd sighed.

“But what about my parents?!” Emily cried, tears in her eyes, “We need to help them!”

“We’ll come back. I promise.” This time it was Sirius speaking. “Ready, all?”

“Ready.”

“Ready!”

“Ready!”

Emily swallowed, “Ready as I’ll ever be, Siri.”

“TO THE FUTURE!” Sirius roared, and with that a sudden bright blue light enveloped them all, and seconds later….they were gone….
