Chapter 1
The Autumn air was brisk; Children were gleaming; and Pumpkins sat on door steps with spooky faces. It was October 31st and school had let out early for Wendy Campel. She disliked the horrid holiday. Goblins; Ghouls; Vampires...Ugh she thought to herself. Wendy was walking home from school with her books clenched tightly to her chest. She was trying to keep warm. This year, money was tight. Her mother, Suzie, was unable to provide mittens and scarves for her family. The leaves were falling from the oak trees in sudden gusts. The trees were definitely unloading for the winter. Wendy stepped up onto the curb and skipped up the path, leading to her petite little cape cod home on the corner of Hopkins and Whitaker Street. She opened the door and ran up the stairs. With much effort, she threw her books down onto her bed and grabbed her nearest blanket. I could go for some nice hot cocoa, she though to herself. As she began brewing some water on the stove, her younger sister, Jenna walked in. "Hi-ya!" Jenna said in a high pitched tone. Unlike her sister, she was very excited about Trick - or - Treating. "Hey honey! How was school? All ready to go Tricky Treating?" she asked; trying to show some authentic halloween spirit. "School was awesome! We made these cool masks and colored pumpkins! I can't wait!! Are you going to come with us this year? I really missed you last year." Cried Jenna in a sweet tone. "Aw! Sounds like you had fun! That's great! Um, I have a lot of homework to catch up on and..... my room needs to be cleaned! I will be home when you return though to look at your candy! Try and get me some Dum Dums!" Replied Wendy. She hated lying, but she didn't want her little sister to get upset. She knew that Jenna understood how important school work was to her, and how her room being destroyed made her stressed. She agreed, and walked upstairs. Suzie put Jenna in her bumble bee costume, and fed her a quick PB & J sandwich. "We are leaving now! Have fun, Wendy! We should be home by 8." Suzie called up the stairs. They closed the door tightly behind them, locking it. Chapter 2
Wendy stretched out on her bed, with her textbook wide open and a blank sheet of note book paper in front of her. The truth was, she really did have homework. She would easily have it done in ten minutes, so it really wasn't a good excuse. Lying or not, she had to do it so she got right down to buisiness. In no time, it was finished and she cleaned up the small heap of laundry on her carpet. She was walking it down to the laundry room, on the first floor of their home when her stomache began to growl. She soon realized that she had skipped out on lunch, and her after school apple. She walked into the kitchen and opened up the pantry doors. Wendy stood there a moment, comtemplating on what she should make. She reached for a can of spaghetti sauce, and fell forward. Darn it! Why does do I have to be the clumsy one in the family? Thought Wendy, picking herself up off the tiled floor. The can of spaghetti sauce had tumbled down along with her and shattered open. Hundreds of microscopic glass bits covered the floor like diamonds. This was not the first time this happened. Wendy couldn't leave a mess, so she opened the basement door and walked down. She hated going down there. She didn't believe in ghost or any of those scary things, but it gave her the creeps. Walking toward the cleaning supply cabinet, she felt a cold chill run down her spine. Turning a complete 180 degree turn, she found the culpret. A rusty pole that leaked instantly right above her head. She snatched an old towel and rapped the pole up, duct taping the sides to solve the problem. Just as she grabbed the mop, she heard a faint voice coming from the opposite side of the basement. It seemed to have said her name, but was too faint to make out the exact words. Not only did it seem to have said her name, but that other side of the basement where it came from was where the exit of the basement was. If she wanted to get out, she would have to bolt across the wide floor, where just about anything could be lurking.
She knew she couldn't wait there forever, for it would soon be 8 o'clock and she had to complete a few minor chores. Alright. How bad can this be? What's the worst thing that will happen? A big white ghosty float across the floor? Psst! Yeah right! Wendy said to herself. She counted to three in her head. When coming to the third number, she bolted. Full speed. No stopping now, she thought silently. When she arrived at the door to go up, she began twisting the handle frantically. OH NO! She had began to panic so hard that her hands got all sweaty. If that weren't enough, she couldn't keep her hand steady long enough to open the door! Millions of ideas fled through her mind, like the geese flying south, on a late fall day. None of them worked. She leaned her back against the wall; falling down to her knees, she began to cry. Glancing quickly at her watch made her even more nervous. It was 7:28. She was quickly running out of time. Soon enough, her mother and Jenna would be home, and look at over for her. The last place they would ever check would be the basement. The spaghetti sauce had been left lingering around on the floor for about 45 minutes now. Definitely long enough to start saturating through the crisp whiteness of the new tile. She would never hear the end of this one. And after all that, she had chores to do! Her movie ticket to go to the movies with her friends the following weekend depended on every cent she would earn from chore money this week. She stopped thinking. With every minute, came another reason why she must get out of the basement. She layed down and closed her eyes. She must rest for a few minutes to calm down. Maybe that would work. Hopefully that would work. She set her watch on an alarm for 8 minutes. Wendy was allowing herself to rest for 8 minutes. Fortunetely, she was able to fall asleep and calm down some. Enough for the sweat for the sweat on her palms to dry up, and to get the door open. She rushed up the steps and turned the corner for the kitchen. Falling to her knees momentarily, she began wiping with more effort than she had ever used. The sauce was a little bit of a problem. She poured some bleach down, for it was the only problem solver. The crisp white would blend in with the new tile. After she completed that task, she ran upstairs. Putting away her textbooks and homework papers, some thoughts went through her mind. She thought about how she wouldn't be going down into the basement to get the clothes from the washer, how she had solved the sauce problem, and how her mother would have felt if she had known. It was only 7:44. She still had 16 minutes. She ran down the steps so fast that she barely touched most of them. Her chores for that day were to take out the trash and wash the dishes. Sounds pretty easy, but it wasn't when your adrenaline had been pumped up so high. She managed to complete her chores, in a timely matter. With less than 10 minutes left, she light a candle to cover up the horrid scent coming from the kitchen floor. She wiped up the mess, checking to make sure the bleach had done it's job. She had been successful. The bleach had soaked through, and whitened the floor as if nothing had happened.
Wendy changed into her pajamas, washed her face, and redid her hair. She had looked like she just came out of war. Just as she reached the sofa to watch some TV, the doorbell rang. It was Suzie and Jenna. Jenna wore a huge smile on her face, and carried a bucket that looked as to weigh a ton. "Hey girly! Looks like you made out really good this year! Did ya get me any Dum Dum's?" asked Wendy. "YEAH! They were really nice this year" Jenna gleamed, holding a few full sized candy bars up. "Dum Dums.... let's see.... 1....2...3...4.." Jeenna counted to herself, until she reached the bottom of her pumpkin bucket. There were a total of 26 Dum Dum's! "Woah! Thank you so much, Jenna! You can have some, if you want! I don't need all of them! That was really nice of you! Do you want me to help you go through your candy bucket?" said Wendy; bewildered. Jenna and Wendy sat down at the kitchen table and sorted through candy for a few hours. This had truely been an amazing halloween for little Jenna! On the corner of Hopkins and Whitaker Street, lived the happiest family in all of Salem. They were blessed to have eachother. Even though money wasn't at its peak, or they were the luckiest folks around, doesn't mean they were happy. And happy was exactly what they were.
