Camp Maverick

This is a story that I decided to write after reading Soccerrox7's Camp Winnihana I hope it'll be just as successful, Soccerrox7 if you are reading this, Thanks SO much for the inspiration. I love writing so much that I went to a camp this summer devoted to Heroes and Villains literature. I love constructive criticism if you could drop by and leave a comment after reading, that would be "insanely awesome"!

Chapter 1

I sat on the escorted shuttle that had just left the Sandiego airport, I was on my way to my home for the next 7 weeks. To be more specific I was on my way to Camp Maverick. The camp for surfer wannabes and people who love the beach. I wanted to learn how to surf ever since I was little, but none of my parents knew how so that was one more thing that I had added to my to-do list. I tugged my American eagle hoodie on tighter, the navy blue fleece was so soft. I was going to have to get used to this cool weather, it wasn't like the humid temperature at home.

The Camp Maverick brochure offered beautiful cabins overlooking the Pacific ocean and windsurfing, Surfing, and tons of "Sun and fun", It was a camp for boys and girls little or small. I was 13 and ready for anything. I was listening to you belong with me on my Iphone, Taylor Swift's voice was perfect for the Sunset atmosphere. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, the ocean blue shuttle I was on was almost at the camp. The bus lurched to a halt and gathered my things.

Chapter 2

I walked up to the glass building that was in front of me. There was a line of kids, I walked up and went to the end of the line. I was behind a girl with strawberry blonde hair. She turned around and greeted me,"Hey I'm Ashley, what's your named?" Wow this girl must have some nerve going up to strangers like this? "Um Claire.",I said. She asked,"Is this your first year here? This is my fourth." I replied,"This is my first year here, I want to learn how to surf." She picked up the pink surfboard case beside her and said,"Oh cool,I'm SURE you're going to love it here, I can teach you if you like......I won Best Junior surfer in the girls division last year." I looked at her impressed,"Wow, sure I said." She replied clearly happy with her work,"Cool see you later." I wondered why she was leaving, DUH! It was her turn next in line.

A few minutes later she was done. A brunette woman asked,"Hello welcome to Camp Maverick! What's your name and age?" I stammered,"Oh Claire Underwood." The woman asked,"And age?" I felt myself blushing,"13." She looked through the binder on the table and found my name, highlighted it. And then handed me a button that said Hello my name is Claire Underwood. Then she smiled and said,"Welcome to Camp Maverick!"

Chapter 3

I looked at the map the lady had handed me and the name of my cabin, and other important stuff I needed to know. I lugged my ocean blue luggage all the way to cabin 8 and opened the cabin door. I was greeted by bright blue walls and 4 couches with a huge window overlooking the setting sun. I gasped, It was so beautiful. I guessed this was the main room, there were two doors. I walked across the room to one of them and opened it. I was looking at the bathroom, it had the same blue that was the wall in the main room. It wasn't your average summer camp bathroom, the showers had walls, not the average curtains, and it wasn't all dirty. I went to one of the mirrors and fixed my hair. There, I thought just right! I left the bathroom.

I walked through the other door and found the sleeping quarters. There were 5 bunks, I walked over to the one right by another breathtaking window. It had my name on a sheet of blue paper taped to it. YES! I thought, I was a top bunk, The best part was that the window was ceiling to wall, and the bed was pressed against it, just so that if I wanted to, I could roll over at night and stare at the tumbling ocean and the palm trees. I sat on the bed and laid down and thought, Wow this might actually be fun!

Chapter 4

The door flew open. And two identical girls walked by, They said said,"Wow this place hasn't changed that much since last year." The other girl nodded her head," Yeah I agree." They glanced around the room and I guess they noticed me,"Hey who are you? We're Allie and Ellie." I hopped off the comfy bunk bed and said," Oh I'm Claire!" They said,"Is it your first year here? Its our second." I nodded. They said,"Oh cool!" Then they strided over to their bunks, Allie on top and Ellie on the bottom. I figured I better arrange everythng of mine if I'm going to sleep here tonight. I made my bed, I put the green sheets on then the blue-green quilt. There, I thought Just right!

Ten minutes later Alllie and Ellie said,"We have to leave soon." About 7 voices said, "Yeah","OK","I'll get on it!" I guess I hadn't been paying attention because the cabin was suddenly full of girls. I Decided I was going to leave my American Eagle Skinny Jeans and my American eagle blue shirt on. I threw on the navy blue hoody. I grabbed my toiletries bag and scrambled to the bathroom. I pulled out the green tube of mascara, and waved the wand over my eyes. I put my Orange lip gloss on also. I grabbed the bag wih one last look in the mirror. As I left I heard and saw a person bigger than the rest(I assumed she was the counseler) Saying,"You have 5 more minutes, remember make yourself presntable because we're meeting the hammerheads!" OOH, I thought, I want to see sharks. But why would we need to be presentable if we were meeting sharks?

Chapter 5

As I pushed open the glass door from our cabin, I noticed that the sun had already set and the beachy terrain was full of darkness. We walked single file and until then I noticed that Ashley, The girl I had met in line, was in my cabin. She had been the nicest person I had met at camp. I learned a few minutes ago that my cabin counseler's name was Bethany, her white blond high ponytail bobbed up and down as she led us to the center pavilion or the outdoor dining hall. When we got there I saw a huge campfire and tables with the aroma of burgers drifting from it. My mouthwatered I hadn't eaten anything except the Mcdonalds burger I grabbed in a rush before getting on the next plane. I wondered where the sharks were, I jogged further up the line to Ashley. "Hey Ashley, Where are the sharks? I thought we were meeting the hammerheads?", said. She replied," The hammerheads aren't exacty sharks. They're WAY cuter then sharks, well at least some of them." She glanced towards a table full of boys. She continued," They're the guys at this camp. There's fun nicknames for everybody at camp. The counselers are called the Kahunas. And we're called the Hibiscus's." I felt my face burning," Oh I said." She continued to glance at that table full of guys, about our age, and zeroed in on a boy. My heart stopped. This hammerhead was different from the rest. NOT in a bad way.

Chapter 6

He had dark brown hair, hazel eyes with long eyelashes, his hair flipped up on one side, which framed his perfect face, well , perfectly. He smiled as he was joking around with his friends, his smile was perfect also. I snapped out of it, and caught back up with the group.

After the delicious dinner we went to the HUGE camp fire. Each Cabin had a log, eventually the logs would have the names of the cabins painted on it. I sat down on the log next to ashley. After everyone had settled, I noticed that the perfect hammerhead was 3 logs down. A lady stepped into the center of the log circle and said,"Welcome everybody to Camp Maverick. This summer will be one of the most best and exciting in your life.", The lady had introduced herself as head counseler Lauren Maverick. The Camp had been passed through the Maverick family, Thus why Lauren was head counseler now. Lauren continued talking and telling us all about everything we would do. Then she announced all abot the dances that would be held every Friday night. She finally got to the part where she told us about the big surfing championship at the end of the session. " Last year, We had many good surfers try for the title Best Junior Surfer in their gender group. I would like to have the pleasure of asking the two winners to come up, and tell us about their experience. Will Mr. Collin Leck and Miss Ashley Richardson come up?" Ashley got off of our log and then I searched the circle for this Collin boy. I gasped, Collin was the perfect Hammerhead! He got up and strided to meet Ashley at the center of the campfire, who was beaming and smiling at Collin. Ashley cleared her throat," Campers, As winner of the Best Junior Surfer girl division I had a great experience last year. Camp Maverick is all about surfing and meeting new people, Surfing at Camp Maverick is great and winning is even better. I must tell you that this oppurtunity is great and you should grab it.", Ashley finished her voice shaky at the end. She walked back to her seat. I gave her an air five as she sat back down. Collin began in a perfect voice,"Hey Surfers. The Junior competition is great, even if you don't know how to surf." I could have sworn Collin glanced at me and then continued," You'll learn. I have just been informed that Ashley and I will be mentoring two lucky surfers who want to win the competition, there will be a random drawing tomorrow for the lucky campers. Have a great time at Camp Maverick it's Insanely awesome!" Everyone applauded until Lauren told everybody they could be dismissed. I secretly hoped that I was Collin's lucky camper.

Chapter 7

When we got back to the cabin, Bethany told us all to sit down on the couches in the main room. She also told us," To get to know each other we're going to go around and say our names and where you're from, Ashley you start." When we were done this is what I could remember:

Ellie Greene: NYC
Mary Mills: Santa Fe, New Mexico
Autumn Lamphier: Dallas, Texas
Katy Laurel: Honolulu, Hawaii

Lilli Rose: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

After that Bethany told us to go to our bunks, that we had set up earlier. I threw on some shorts and a tank, and went to sleep.

The next morning after we got ready. Bethany said that before breakfast we must go to the outdoor pavilion for the drawing of the metors. We sat on our log, and Ashley strided to the center of the circle. She greeted Collin with a flirty,"Hey what's up?" Collin said,"Nothing much." Once everyone was settled Lauren Maverick walked to the center of the circle and addressed the camp,"Campers, We are here today to choose the apprentices of Ashley Richardson and Collin leck. Let us begin." She picked up the elaborately decorated bucket and drew a name,"This is for Ashley's Apprentice, who will be a boy." She picked up a scrap of paper and read the name on it squinting through her bright green eyes, she read,"Casey Hagan." She gestured to a boy with shaggy blonde hair and big blue eyes, He wasn't as "Different" as Collin, but he was OK. Casey nimbly walked over and stood next to Ashley. Everyone applauded. My heart was thudding, if I were to be picked would I actually have to stand next to him? Next Lauren picked up a pink bucket and said,"This will be for Collin Leck's Apprentice which will be a girl." I saw Lilli Rose and Mary Mills crossing their fingers and tons of other girls too. Finally after what seemed like an eternity Bethany Announced,"Claire Underwood." Oh God I thought, what have I gotten myself into? Everyone applauded and was smiling at me, especially my mentor. I strode over with confidence and took my rightful place next to Collin who gave me a high five. I could get used to this, I thought.

Chapter 8

I stood there and let this all sink in, in front of the whole camp with Collin, The applause died down and Lauren cleared her throat and continued," This morning the mentors and their apprentices will have a little,you could say, meet and greet. They will miss whatever activity they have scheduled right after this including breakfast, which will be served during their meeting, you may all go, mentors and apprentice's stay behind." Once everyone had .
cleared out Lauren Congratulated me and the now red faced Casey.

Collin shot Casey a look, not a good one. Lauren told us to follow her. We trekked though palm trees, bushes, and shrubs. She finally pushed aside some final palm fronds and I gasped. It was a beautiful sandy bach front with logs in a miniature outdoor pavilion formation. The sun sparkled like tiny diamond necklaces on the water. Lauren motioned for us to sit down on the logs. I sat down on the one nearest to me, and ashley sat at the one across. Somehow Collin and Casey were both on my log, leaving ashley by herself. Lauren said laughing,"Two per log." Collin pushed Casey off and Casey scrambled to take his place next to Ashley with a Scarlet face. Collin smirked at Casey. Lauren cleared her throat,

Chapter 9

"Congrats! I'll allow you to tell the other one about yourself." Collin said and looked into my eyes and said," I'll go first, my full name is Collin James Leck, I'm 14, and I'm from Conneticut." I said," Cool, my full name is Claire Brooke Underwood, I'm 13 and from Virginia." He said," Thats awesome, I have 2 younger siblings a brother and a sister." I said," SAME!" We both cracked up for no particular reason. As the time went on, I learned that he wanted to be a pro soccer player when he grew up and he loved the and 30H!3! We had so much in common it was scary. God, My life is turning into a real life You Belong with me song! She wears short skirts I wear tshirts, Will there be a girl who wears short skirts?????

Chapter 10

That night I thought about everything I had Learned about Collin James Leck. As I sat in Bed gazing out the window, Ashley in the bottom bunk, arranging what she was going to wear to dinner and camp activity. I had already put on my outfit, a pair of purple skinny jeans, and a 30H!3 tee. I also had the black and neon striped Roxy bikini underneath.

As we arrived at the dining pavilion I sat down on the blue bench next to Ashley and Allie. I went to the line and grabbed a burger, fries, salad, and Icecream sandwhich. I chewed in silence, when I heard my name being called," Claire! Come here!" It was Collin, I nervously walked to the boys table and saw Collin with and annoyed look on his face. He had Casey standing next to him. Collin sighed and said," Claire Casey, Casey Claire." This was awkward.........was Collin introducing me to Casey? Collin the turned to Casey and said,"Happy you just met your dream girl?" Casey turned as red as the setting sun on the water, and looked embarrassed and as if he was ready to kill at the same time. Casey snatched the ketchup bottle from Avery's (A boy from their hall) and squirted it all over Collin. Collin was red, not just from the ketchup. Then he grabbed the mustard, out of an annoyed Avery's hand and squirted it all over Casey's face, and more. I sat there with a mortified look on my face, Casey ran to the guys room. And Collin smirked that cute but mean smile again," Sorry about that Claire, Lauren said that the Apprentices and mentors should sit together to get to know eachother." I nodded, and he gestured to a table for two.

Chapter 11

Dinner was eaten with awkward silences and me with that mortified look still plastered to my face.God, what Collin did was SO uncalled for, I thought. I mean Collin's cute and all but......He's kinda.....mean. After dinner we all walked to the beachfront and the girls and boys went their seperate ways to change in the locker rooms. The Girls' locker room was painted hot pink and aqua blue with hawaiin style Hibiscus's painted elaborately on the walls. I stripped off my tee and jeans, put them in a locker and went to the bathroom sink to check myself out. I tightened the bikini and put my board shorts on.Satisfied with how I looked I walked out of the locker room. Guess who was there waiting for me? Collin. He was wearing a pair of navy blue board shorts with a hibiscus design on them. He looked at me smiling and turned red. Then he said,"You look nice!" Oh god......I saw Casey glancing at us from behind a plam tree, with a sad look on his face. I frowned, why, is Collin so mean to Casey?

Chapter 12

My parents had paid a surf board rental fee before I came here so I could ave a surf board to use. I went to a cabana that had a sign plastered on it that said SURFBOARD RENTALS!
I walked over to there and the employee asked me,"Are you here to pick up a surfboard?" I replied,"Yeah!" He said unenthusiastically,"Last name please." I said annoyed,"Underwood." He went to a backroomthen a few minutes later he came back with a blue surfboard case that said Camp Maverick on it. He said,"Here you go. You can customize it any way you want, just make sure it gets back to me at 3 PM sharp on the last day." I nodded then ran off. Collin was waiting at the beach with a moneygreen surfboard that said "CMoney." He said,"Follow me! I know the best spot." I nodded and he started walking. Not far along he fell down and started grabbing his foot and wincing in pain. He said his hazel eyes hurt,"I think I stepped on something!" I rushed and found the nearest staff and asked them to tke care of Collin and they told me to go surf with someone else for now. I smirked and thought, KARMA! I ran over to the palm tree where casey was standing and said,"Hey, sorry 'bout what happened earlier." He said with his blue eyes clouded with sadness,"Yeah, Collin can be a jerk sometimes! Um.....there was something I uh wanted....to um.....ask you." I nodded encouragingly for him to go on.
He said,"I was wondering


Chapter 13

Do You want to go to the first dance with me?" I blushed and said remembering how Collin was a jerk earlier,"Sure I'd be glad to!" He replied relieved,"Thanks, I was afraid you'd say no and you would want to go with Collin.......He was going to ask you after surfing today." OH GOD!!! WHAT AM I GOING TO DO! Should I say yes to Collin?????
Casey said,"Um and wanna surf with me?" I said with a warmsmile,"Yeah!" We walked to the beach and we both took out or rip off priced rental surfboards and we looked at each other's board. His was Blue and green and mine was hot pink and blue. We were standing inbetween two palm trees that were shaped like a heart.

Casey and I looked at our boards and were clueless. Because his mentor, Ashley, had come down with Swine flu. We decided to forget abotu surfing and go into the bushes to talk without Collin or anybody else noticing us. He started aying jokes and flirting, I was giggling and so was he. Actually, before I hadn't noticed how good-looking Casey was. He was actually almost better looking than Collin. Casey had shaggy surfer blonde hair and bright blue eyes. He was wearing a pair off checker-board trunks by Billabong. We stopped laughing, The bushes rustled and we heard footsteps.The bushes parted and revealed a figure masked by darkness.

Chapter 14

Casey ran off. and I was left alone. with Collin. He said,"Wanna go to the dance with me. My foot is Okay, it was just a little shardof razpr clam shell." I answered,"Yeah!" And then he asked If I wanted to go to the Smoothie bar with him. I said yes and when he got there he ordered a cherry smoothie that was named, Amore. He grabbed two straws and we sat down at a booth. He put the straws in the humongous glass. and sipped the smoothie. I followed. When the smoothie was gone he leaned in. I pulled back, What the flip was Collin gonna do! I was NOT ready for THAT with a guy I didn't even know and who was a J-E-R-K

Chapter 15

The week flew by. Behtany took us to the mall on Wednesday for our outfits. On friday, the bathroom was crowded. It wasn't even funny. I put on the blue mini dress, put on some super sparkly sephora eyeshadow and makeup, and I was ready.

As we arrived at the pavilion, Casey was dancing with a group of his friends, he was lip singing firrflies with his friend Jimmy. A slow song started blasting out of the speakers, I ran up behind Casey, and put my handds over his eyes. and whispered in his ear guess who. He turned around and smiled, we awkwardly got in to position and we started swaying with the music. Casey actually was.....well......as Different as Collin, if not more. At the end of the dance he leaned in, and hat haped next was magic. pure magic. If you don't belive in magic,you reallly should. The next thing I realized a whole crowd was clapping and me and casey bowed and blushed.
