WANT YOUR STORY TO BE HEARD? Ask to be added to the PM list and I'll post a story here! Here are some that you should TOTALLY check out: Character Guide: Chance Callins ( I know, I use that last name a lot! ) :
She's the main character who is just a normal girl with extraordinary talents! Her friends are Penelope, Dana & Caylee. Her enemy is Layla, the not-so-nice dancer who is totally out to get her!
Appearance: She's the average short brunette with long brown hair & green eyes. She's got a nice, slim figure with a medium skin tone. Dana Junipher: She's an amazing friend who I modeled after my WI BFF Laurencyrus, or Jess you can call her! I don't know what Jess looks like since I met her on WI, but I thought that it's better to model Dana how I want her to be. Her main rival is Natasha who is Jenna's accomplice. That's why she's such a talented prankster; she knows how to counter-attack when Jenna pranks!
Appearance: She has a gorgeous chocolate complexion and medium-length, twisted locks of black hair that are the envy of most. She's also got stunning orange eyes. Penelope Feena: She's a sort of shy girl but other than that, she's incredible! Once you truly get to know her better, then you'll see that she's fun and smart. She works hard and is one seriously good student & guitar player!
Appearance: She has blue eyes and is very tall with light brown hair. Caylee Jeffers: She's the dumb blonde of the group, but she's still a fab friend. You can't have a better dummy than her! Haha! Caylee stands by your side when people say that bananas are a fruit ... uh, even if they're right, if you don't think so, she's there for you!
Appearance: She's a sort of tall blonde and she has hazel eyes. She reminds me of my friend Meaghan, actually! ^_^ Ginger Allen: She's the gym teacher. She's a good mentor and helps the girl through the toughies.
Appearance: A medium height, slim gym teacher with dirty blonde hair. Layla Kimball: She's a mean, spiteful girl with a soft center. Is she really this mean? Could there be something that is making her like this?
Appearance: A medium height brunette with blonde streaks and dark green eyes. VERY similar to Chance, actually... quite scary! Natasha Perrugay: She's not very mean at all, actually. She's more scared of Jenna. She's also very shy. Is she putting on an act?
Appearance: A beaming red-head with pale skin who's sort of short.
Ron Devvers: You'll have to wait and find out!
Appearance: He has short black hair and is short and chubby. Adrian Ionis: He's the cutie who crushes on Chance. He just came back from England after leaving in grade four. A really nice, shy guy as well, plus he's super fun to be around.
Appearance: Short, light brown hair, medium height. Baby blue eyes with green around the pupil. Not very strong, but not a twig either. Keenan Ullalis: A cool guy who is a total jock. He loves football and likes to hang with the "Hot Chicks". Somehow, though, he falls for Dana.
Appearance: Very tall with silky, dirty blonde hair & green eyes. Slim & muscular. Andrew Levrene: Andrew is a vegan musician who plays the guitar and is teaching his crush Caylee. Really caring and cool. Sort of a loner. Appearance: Scruffy, black hair with Hazel eyes. Ian Opal: Ian is a loud, outspoken dreamer. A lot of the girls are secretly crushing on him, but he decides to give Penelope his heart.
Appearance: He has red mixed with brown hair & he's kind of tall. Miss Brenditt: The L.A. teacher, Miss Brenditt, is a super cool thirty-year-old teacher. She does a lot of things with her students and is a vegan. Not only is she a teacher, but she's got a job at PETA!
Appearance: Long, blonde hair with great fashion sense. Medium height and very pretty. Mrs. Lapore:
Appearance: Light brown hair cut into a bob. She's chubby and she's got plain brown eyes. Despite being only forty, she's got terrible fashion sense. Really short as well. Ray Callins: COMING SOON
Appearance: COMING SOON
Trisha Callins: COMING SOON
Appearance: COMING SOON MORE COMING SOON! Chapter One: I awoke with a flashlight beaming into my light green eyes. I squinted and made an attempt to cover my eyes, but I hadn't the chance. I was tied to my bed! Another crazy morning at PAFTY, the school I went to. The silly name PAFTY is short for Performing Arts for Talented Youth.
"Come on Chance, time to wake up!" Dana wasn't a bully at all, but she was a prankster as well as my best friend.
I stared for a moment at the group of friends surrounding me and managed a grunt. "Guys," I groaned. "It's, like, five A.M. or something!" I threw a pillow at Dana and she giggled.
"Oh Chance, always moody in the morning." Penelope loved to tease me. I shot a mean look at her for fun and she batted her blue eyes at me. "You still moody?" She held back her laugh.
"Yeah, especially when I'm tied up! Release me you fools!" I commanded in a joking way. We all laughed at this as Caylee, the "dumb blonde", lifted my long brown hair to untie the rope.
After the odd wake up, we all got dressed and ready to go to class. Sadly, today wasn't an all acting day, nor an all singing. I wished it were! We operated on a ten day schedule. Today our periods went as followed: Gym, L.A., Math, Singing.
Singing? I guess you're wondering what I'm talking about. Well, let's go back to the school name. Performing Arts. It's a school where talented Youth (like in the name) go to perform and maybe find a career.
My talent is mainly singing. I'm a great dancer too. I'm alright at acting but you know, just working on it. Instruments? Ha! The microphone is my only one.
I actually met Dana in Music class where we had to perform a duet. That was so fun!
Before I knew it, we had started running in Gym. "Run girls!" She turned on the speakers and blasted Rihanna, S.O.S., one of my favorite songs!
Today was going to be pretty fun! Chapter Two: I turned over to Dana as she was playing with her perfectly twisted, black curls. She was gazing at the ceiling, probably thinking about Keenan.
Ha, more about Keenan! I bet you wanna know all about him. Well, I don't think he's that attractive, but who my pretty little orange-eyed BFF likes, I guess I gotta like!
"Earth to Dana!" The gym teacher Ginger shouted. She liked to scare Dana and she did. Dana let out an ear-piercing scream which exploded into my ear.
"Dana!" I turned to her and nearly everyone in the class burst out laughing. It was just one of those moments.
"Ha, I'm back on earth alright," she said with a grin. "Besides, I could hear that from the Moon!"
"I guess that you could!" Ginger laughed. "Alright, now what was I saying? Hmm..."
As Ginger and I trailed off, all we could talk about was singing class.
"Why do they have to make me wait until last period?" I moaned.
"I dunno," Caylee started. "I mean, don't adults purposely torture us so that we have to wait for dance!" She made a bit of a scene talking about her passion and stared blankly at me. "What? Was I loud?"
"Caylee," I began with a huge smile spread across my face. "You really are blonde."
"I don't know, I mean, don't you have jondoce if you're yellow?"
"Hun," Penelope piped in. "It's jaundice. Not whatever you just said."
I turned and put cupped my hand to Dana's ear. "Meow!" I said. "Hiss!"
"I agree!" Dana looked over at Caylee and we all huddled. "Caylee, Chance, we need to get that girl out!"
"Whatcha talking about guys?" She had a bit of a frown masked behind the tiny smile she was showing. The three of us exchanged glances and within them decided that I would tell her.
"Penelope, is there something wrong?" I bit my lip and stared into her eyes.
"Well," she said as she grit her teeth discontentedly. "My mom. You know her you guys? She's really cool. But right now, she's not being."
"How's so?" Caylee sometimes said really intelligent sounding things and it really made me flabbergasted!
"Uh," she turned to me wondering why Caylee sounded less blonde. This time it was Penelope who bit her lip. "Ladies, I'm moving." Chapter Three: My heart nearly jumped out of my ears. Nearly all at once Dana, Caylee & I all shouted the same thing.
"WHAT?" Caylee shouted it louder than the rest of us since she had known her the longest. "No!"
The gym teacher looked over and saw the hurt in Penelope's eyes. Ginger looked down. She had known that Penelope was moving. I could tell.
Penelope went to say something but all she said was, "Ginger". Ginger nodded and motioned her head to the door. We all hooked arms and trudged heavily outside of the gym into the hallway.
Caylee suddenly just couldn't contain her tears anymore. She fell to the ground and I could see that our blissfully unaware blonde was suddenly aware of something. And it was horrible.
Dana read my mind and asked the question we all wanted the answer to. "Where," she stuttered and took a breath to avoid the tears. "Where are you moving to?"
"I... well, we're going to the U.S... Hawaii to be exact. My Dad and his freaking job!" She hit the wall with her fist and I jumped to hold her close. We all got down to the ground and sat close together. We wept in silence.
The hallways of PAFTY would never seem to empty. I mean, only when she leaves will PAFTY be even more wretched.
Finally, after what seemed to be an eternity, Caylee spoke. "Where's Switzerland? Is that a state?" She looked at us very seriously. "I can move to another state, Pen. I swear I will!"
"Aw," Penelope said as she grasped Caylee tightly. "Honey, you're more blonde than me!"
"Really?" Caylee laughed and we all couldn't help but giggle. It soon erupted into much more and the laughter was our life preserver in this difficult time.
Dana wiped her delicate hand across her dark face. Despite her chocolate skin tone, I could see the dark circles below her eyes. Dana was hiding her emotions.
After reminiscing about all of the memories that we shared in the past, the bell made us all jump. Before we had known it, class was already over.
"Pen," Dana said. "When are you going to move?"
"I'll be moving in three weeks." She looked to the floor and kicked at the ground. The L.A. teacher sent us to the office to talk. She knew how close we were. Everyone in the school did.
"You know, there are things we can do." I said that as looked around the table at my suddenly bright-eyed friends.
"How's so?" I guess Caylee liked saying that.
"Well my little genius," I smiled happily, "we can all take a vacation."
"Are you insane?!" I guess that Dana, at first, didn't notice how loud she yelled. "Sorry, I didn't mean to say that so loud." She looked at all of the shocked faces in the office. They were shocked because of her noisy outburst. "Anyway, as I was saying, are you insane?! My mother & father wouldn't let me just randomly go on vacation during the middle of the school year! My goodness! I love you, Chance, but what idea was that?"
I was kind of discouraged. Not that much. I knew she was moody. She agreed. "I was just being moody, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to."
"It's fine, Dana. I feel just as lousy as you do. But," I grinned, "I had something else in mind."
"Huh?" Everyone said & looked at each other as they frowned in a confused sort of way.
"What do you mean?" Penelope looked just as puzzled, despite the fact that she usually caught on to what I was saying.
"Our parents trust Pen and her parents, right?" My eyes searched the other girl's eyes seeing that they, too, were looking for answers. "Well, who says we can't take a little trip to Hawaii?" Chapter Four:
Everyone's jaws dropped. "Hawaii?" Dana began looking around and then focused on me. "You know what girls?" She looked at Penelope.
"What?" Caylee was eager; I could tell by her tone.
"I think that-" Dana started.
She was clipped off by Penelope saying, "That's not a bad idea." Dana and Caylee made a series of 'are you insane' faces at her. "What? It is! My parents, they're pretty cool about things like this."
"Chance," Dana looked at me & said. "This is kinda... well, as the french would say, fou!"
"Yeah, it's totally food!" Caylee, you're hilarious.
"Cay, fou means crazy in French," Dana uttered.
"How is it fou - I mean, how is it crazy?" I let out a little laugh and looked at them. "It's one hundred percent NOT crazy!" Caylee seemed to be thinking while Dana wrote something down. Penelope as well looked like she was pondering something. "Caylee, don't you wanna stay with Pen? This would give us more time!"
"Well," she said as she reasoned with herself.
"And Dana, you love her just as much as us two do!" I grasped Dana' hands. "Dana. Admit it! You wanna ask your parents, don't you?"
"Yes, yes I do." Dana finally let her smile break through.
"Tonight," Caylee said with a wide grin. "Tonight is when we ask our parents. All of us. It's Friday, so it's all good! We can have a sleepover and plan it if it works out!
"Nope." My father said. "Absolutely not."
"But why not! Please Dad? I'll do extra around the house. I'll walk the dog more! Change Alessia's diapers! Anything!"
"Sorry, honey." He put his hand on my shoulder. I just nudged it off. "Look, I - I mean, we, your mother and I, don't have the money to send you off on some tropical vacation."
"But Daddy! I want just a little more time with Pen!" I put on my successful act of crying. The only thing was was that those tears were starting to become real. "Dad, you remember Hugh?"
"Yes, but that was -"
"No Dad! You went and MOVED IN with Hugh! I'm just going on vacation with her! What's wrong with you? Mom!" I wailed for my mother to come. I saw her tall, slender figure appear from around the corner.
I had confidence that my mother would help me. She sure looked less threatening than him. He was around her height and had a strong, lean figure. It was all topped off with his business man haircut which was brown. His thick brown eyes frowned greatly at me.
"What is it, honey?" She asked me in a delightful tone. See? Much happier than HIM.
My father and I both started to talk at once. My mom plugged her ears and held up a finger to silence us. "Enough! Please!" She placed her hand on her head. "Chance," she said. "Could you please start me off? What's going on?"
"Mom, I know it's a LOT to ask, but do you think that I can go to Hawaii for a little while?" I spoke in a pleading tone and put on my most sad face. I talked before she had a chance to. "I mean, Penelope is moving there, and Dad did the same thing when he was younger, only fifty times worse!"
"I understand your reasoning." She looked at my father. "What's so bad about all of this?"
"I just..." He got caught in his own thoughts. I could tell. He took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh. "I don't know. There's no reason. I trust Mr. and Mrs. Feena, but I am a little hesitant about letting my fourteen-year-old daughter go on some huge trip to Hawaii."
I looked up at him in a new light. "I know that you only want me safe, but I will be. I swear. And it's not in the middle of the school year. It's in three weeks. I'll be done school in two."
"Hon," my mom said as she looked at my father. "I think it's a great idea. I have some extra money I can give her to go." My dad was deep in thought, staring at the kitchen table where we were all sitting. He was standing in the archway in a stiff pose.
"Dad?" I made him jump a little and he began to mutter calculations to himself.
"Alright, deal... if." He stopped at if.
"If what, Dad?" I hoped that I didn't have to re-construct the Mona Lisa like I thought he would make me do.
"If you'll ace your exams at the end of the year." Ouch. That one hurt. He knew that I was weak in Musical Instruments class. I didn't know some of my stuff!
I had no choice. I wanted to have a good mark anyway, so no objecting. "Yeah, OK Dad."
"And Chance," my mother said with a beaming smile. "I'd like you to do something for me."
"Yeah? What is it?" I couldn't think about what my Mom would ask me.
"I'd love it if we painted your little sister's room. I was thinking a few light colors, maybe paint the crib and paint Alessia on the wall. You're a talented artist, & I was waiting until I could have a chance to ask this!"
"Sure! Oh, I love you guys! You won't regret it! I won't do anything stupid! I'll get straight As! Boom! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!" I ran up to my room and dialed the number of Dana as quickly as I could.
As it was ringing, so much went through my mind. I jumped to my feet, off of my bed and to the closet. I swung the door open and Dana answered the phone.
"Dana! Parents! Yes! Hawaii!" I wasn't sure what I said since I was in awe over this, but she sure did!
"Me too! Oh my gosh! Hawaii!" We both started to scream like little kids getting a Barbie and my dad yelled up to me.
"Would you keep it down up there?" Although he wanted to sound tough about this, I heard him laughing with my mother. It was too perfect. Totally and utterly perfect.
Chapter Five: "I cannot BELIEVE our parents are letting us go!" I exclaimed when I got to school & met with the girls. I sat at the table in the cafeteria where we were eating a muffin each. Yum!
"Yeah!" Penelope seemed to be beaming. There was such a glow from her. She looked astonishing. Re-generated. There was something anew about that girl. I mean, how couldn't there be?
Dana & Caylee returned from the cafeteria booth and joined us once again.
"Yummmmm!" Caylee had about three muffins already.
"Caylee, save some for the other students," Dana laughed.
"Why? Don't stew dents not exist? I thought that was ... oh." Caylee blushed but knew we were accepting. We never made fun of her when she's wasn't comfortable. Only nice little jokes. We were like that.
To break the silence, the newly happy Penelope spoke. "Let's get down to business!" She exclaimed, assuring us that she was the most eager out of us all.
"So, did everyone pack? Show of hands!" I asked everyone that since I wanted to know if I was slow or not.
Obviously, everyone else raised their hands.
"Oh," I said, thinking about how they could be so excited... Ok, I am too. But... "I'm slow!" I said, lifting my head as I laughed.
Caylee gave a joyful gasp and her mouth opened wide with a grin. We all looked at her like she was crazy... crazier, actually. "You girls! We need to take Chance shopping! We can all gather cash, and so can she!" She nudged me and laughed. "It will be incredulous (What? Caylee, how do you know that word?) if we went shopping!"
"Um," I said, looking to the floor. "I don't know. I'm not so much of a shopper." I put on a sad, innocent face. I gave in a spared a huge grin. My friends weren't falling for that one. "Oh, you know me too well!"
We all put our hands into the middle of the table. "Shopping team ready!" I think that by shouting that followed by a "Whoop Whoop', we bothered 99% of the cafeteria. I didn't care.
Nothing could get any better in my life! Maybe worse when this happened.
"DRRRRRRRRRINNNNNGGGG!" Oh darn, the bell. We were having a moment! Whatever, life is life! Especially when you wanna be a star!
As I walked through the halls with my tote bag filled with materials, I flipped through my schedule.
BANG! My head was pounding and everything was all over the floor. I had no idea what just happened, but man, did it hurt!
"I am SO sorry!" I heard the voice of an angel and I knew I would have an instant crush. Adrian Ionis was lying on the floor in front of me, struggling to get off the ground. "Did I hurt you?"
Why hadn't I noticed Adrian before? I had known him since K.G., but now there was some kind of new light about him. He was .. cute.
I felt it coming. Oh no! My face was a tomato! I turned away, trying to hide my grin & red face as I got up. "Nope," I laughed. "I think I'm fine."
"Oh," he said with a delighted sigh. "I'm happy I didn't harm you in any way. Now I won't be sued!" It was a silly joke, but we both laughed. I felt the tension in my body pull me away.
"Um, I think I have to go." I wasn't sure if I stuttered my words or not, but all of this made the blood rush to my head. I was bright red, that's for sure.
"Have a good one." He helped pick up my stuff and began walking the opposite way as before.
"You lost?" I asked him, hoping I could aid him in finding class. I would have more of an opportunity to chat with him AND I would miss some of my own class.
And then I remembered, he just transferred here! He moved away in grade four - that's why I hadn't seen him in so long!
"Oh my gosh," I said, forgetting about the bell that was going off behind me, and forgetting that I sounded like some eager school girl - Oh wait, I was exactly that... Oops.
"What's wrong?" He asked me with a worried look. "Did I make you late? Oh, perfect start at a new high school, Adrian. Make a pretty girl miss her... Um," He snatched his agenda after I got a good look at it.
"You have Musical Instruments class! So do I!" I grasped his hand and my heart began to beat fast. It was only to drag him on! "We've gotta get to class!"
Once we arrived in the room, Ms. Lapore was just walking in. She despised me. I didn't care. Adrian needed help, so take THAT one Ms. La Poor!
"Hello, students." She set her eyes on Adrian and I panting at the front of the class. We were sitting beside Dana. I could see her brows moving around; she would question me once Ms. Lapore began to explain how instruments were used in the Renaissance. Boo.
Finally, Ms. Lapore chose me as her victim, as usual. I was used to it. "Well, hello now, CHANCE."
"So that's your name," Adrian said, looking towards the wall. Uh oh. He'd done it alright.
"Pardon me? Speaking without being spoken to will not get you ANYWHERE in this school, mister." She scanned through the attendance list. Adrian gave me a look of despair and he lipped 'help' to me. "I see that you must be Adrian. Is that not a GIRL name?" Everyone started to laugh and Adrian wasn't happy. I put my hand on his arm. Ms. Lapore walked away quite satisfied.
"It's OK, Adrian." I told him this in a reassuring tone. "She picks on me all the time. I suppose she guessed new meat, A.K.A. you, would be the perfect person to victimize." That made him laugh.
Ms. Lapore started to drone on, and since Adrian hadn't caught on yet, he payed attention and scribbled notes or something.
Time had passed and I had told Dana all about meeting Adrian.
"Gosh," she said with a grin from ear to ear. "You really like him."
"What?" I gasped a bit and giggled, but this was an additional thing I couldn't keep secret. "Yes, yes I do." I smiled nearly wider than she had.
"I think he likes you. He looked at you about ten trillion times. He's cute, Chance. I'll give you that."
I sighed the most dreamy sigh I ever had. My heart fluttered and I took back what I had said before. My life could get better, and it just did.
"DRRRRRRRRINNNNNNGGGGGGG!" Ah, my savior, Mr. Bell.
Back at my locker, Adrian was settling in right across from me at the green locker. The sea of people skipping down the hall was what kept us apart, but I was sure that he'd be in the same class as me next.
"Hey, Adrian!" I had to yell and wave my arms for him to see me.
"Yeah?" He heard me for sure, and he was beaming. His smile nearly blinded me. White and perfectly aligned. Snap out of it, Chance! My thoughts are mean. They don't want me to like him! Ok, maybe they're just sick of having to process so much info about him!
I waited until the crowd died down to pass across the way and to lean against the locker beside his. "What do you have next?"
"I've got, hmm..." He took a moment to once again flip through his agenda. This reminded me of how he called me pretty. Wow. Um, thoughts, where are you when I need you to press the "Emergency stop thinking about the cute boy who called you pretty button", and pronto!
"What do you have already?" I demanded in a giggly tone. I was just too in the moon to realize...
"It's only been like, five seconds since I started looking in my agenda." He looked a bit agitated, but he still kept a mellow tone. "I've got Science. Lab partners? That's if we can go in threes. I know you would like to be with that Dana girl. Oh, and we might not be in the same class."
"Yes, we can go in threes, and I'm SO happy that we're in the same class!" Did I just say that? THOUGHTS! Geez! I blushed for the billionth time today. "You know, I'd like to guide you around and stuff."
"Yeah." He blushed too. We both knew that we were a pair of cherries, so we walked down the hall to talk a bit more casually.
I wanted lunch to come SO badly! I wanted to chat with my friends and plan the vacation a little more! By the time the bell rang, three years passed. In my HEAD at least!
In science, we went to the lab and were using the Bunsen burner to make eyedroppers. They worked so well! We all had fun and recovered without burns! I still have mine, but Dana's broke.
"Here Dana," Keenan said to Dana. "I saw that yours broke, and I won't use mine." He was really sweet and it seemed like Lady Luck & Cupid were in cahoots! They were up to something, and they'd better not fail!
"Aw, I don't think I can take that." She was blushing, & despite her dark skin, I could see it.
They debated and when class was done, I jumped for joy. Keenan and Adrian were off to talk together and hang out, so I had some girl time. It rocked!
We all gathered and sat at the table. Just Caylee, Penelope, Dana & I.
"Let me start this convo off with a scream." I opened my mouth and Caylee was sure to cover it. I giggled and everyone joined in. "I like this guy. His name is Adrian! He's adorable.
"Keenan," Dana sighed. "Cutie-pie!"
Caylee and Pen looked at each other and both laughed. They were in the same class, so maybe something funny happened in class.
Pen put on her innocent face. This was going to be good. "Ian. Ian is super delicious."
"Did you hear that on a cell phone commercial?" Dana needed to pipe in.
"Yes," laughed Penelope. "Hey, Caylee, don't you have something to say?"
"Well," Caylee hesitated. "I do. I like this guy named Andrew. We talked a bit in music class and he offered me guitar lessons.
"Guys, I think something is going on with the atmosphere!" I prepared to talk about Cupid and such, but I didn't want to jinx it.
"What?" Pen really wanted to know what I had to say.
"Nothing. Love is just," I said, ending with a sigh. "Super delicious." I stuck my spoon into my Ice Cream Sundae. Yum. Super delicious indeed. Chapter Six: I got back to my dorm that night and looked at the calendar. I was amazed to realize that it was Thursday. I was obviously disappointed and I didn't want Friday, AKA the weekend, to come because no more Adrian, but I needed a little break from La-La Land.
I rushed into the bathroom before the others got home and undressed. I turned on the hot water. The steam coming from the bathtub was so soothing. Dimming the lights and hopping into the tub relieved a ton of stress. I popped a bubble and stared into the one resting on my knee. I saw my reflection. It caused me to ponder about some things.
Why did Adrian, the most perfect boy I've ever known, choose me? It's not like I was having any regrets. I was thrilled to know that I would someday get to hold his hand. I just didn't know why everything good was happening to me.
What else was in store for me? I had no idea, but my thoughts cleared as I submerged my head into the soapy water.
A while later, after I bathed, I got into some snug pajamas and lifted the covers. I shuddered at the feeling of the newly cold sheets. I was comforted, lifted and my mind had cleared once again. My head settled into the pillow and I drifted off.
I was at school, my hair ruffled. Everything seemed really odd. The day hadn't gone very well. I only recalled a portion of my day, but as I walked down the hall, it all seemed a bit better.
There was Adrian standing there. He looked so perfect. Wait? Is that Layla behind him? What's going on!
I saw Layla grab his hand and pull him away. I couldn't believe it. The perfect boy. The most evil girl! She began to drag him around the corner, and every impulsive muscle in my body told me to follow.
My instincts were scaring me. My legs just floated across the floor as I caught up to Adrian. Just as I was about to speak, it happened.
Layla grabbed Adrian's cheek and gave him a peck. I had no idea what to do. I was frozen in place as tears plummeted from my cheeks.
Dana called me and everything melted into place.
"Chance!" Dana called. A jolt went through me. I looked down at my feet. I was laying in bed. It wasn't real!
"Yes!" I jumped out of bed and fell to the floor. "I'm OK!" I laughed and brushed myself off. "I am so happy! I could sing!" I opened the blinds and jumped on my bed singing 'Walkin' on Sunshine'.
"Caylee, Pen," Dana shouted, "it looks like Chance has gone insane! Get the white jackets we were saving for her!"
Caylee & Penelope awoke with a stretch and just stared at me. I began laughing like a maniac and grabbed my pillow. "Who's up for a pillow fight?" I searched their faces and dropped the pillow. "Oh well." I skipped around in a circle, still humming.
"Chance!" Penelope said, clearing her throat. "What on earth are you doing?" I just stared blankly for a moment until she startled me with a shout of my name.
I recapped my dream and told them all about how I adored Dana for waking me up. I gave her a big hug and ran into the bathroom. "What should I wear, Angels?"
"I don't know Charlie!" Dana always played along when I made a 'Charlie's Angels' joke.
In the end, I chose a pair of pink (my favorite color) skinnies, a neon green shirt and a pink necklace. I wore a bright yellow sweater to match and a green bow in my hair. I was sure that I looked great! Anything could impress Adrian, I was sure. I was wearing my 'throw it on when you have nothing to wear' outfit when I met him! Adrian, you're the best.
All of us girls opened the door to the school building and said goodbye to our dorms for the morning. "Ready to face the day, Angels?" I smiled and I could tell we did look like angels. We were shining!
"Hey!" I said, winking to Jake. He was one of the popular guys. I could see his eyes wide. What was new about me? Confidence, pride, and maybe a bit of a better appearance for some reason.
"What's up?" Dana asked to his friend Chase. Similar to my name for some reason, but we were totally different. He as well was a totally sporty jock.
All four of us had the guys falling to the floor. "We've got it, Angels!" Penelope was even cracking her shy shell!
"Blondes are back!" Caylee shouted as she slapped me a high-five. "Oh, oops." She realized she was the only blonde.
"Ha," I giggled, "I love you Cay." I hugged her. A few guys shouted out random things.
"Whoop! Oh yeah! Dang!" Boys are hard to understand.
But then, there was the perfect one. Just like in the dream, the mean girl was behind him! Layla! She was chatting it up with him. I wouldn't have the same thing happen to me, even if it wasn't real before.
"Adrian!" I called out to him as I trotted over.
"Hey Chance!" He gave me a firm hug and whispered something in my ear that I didn't catch. Oh well.
"Look what the cat," Layla muttered, "or should I say dog, dragged in." She forced a smile which was obviously meant to look fake and turned to me with crossed arms. She twisted her hair, which was just like mine, around her finger and pursed her lips. "How are you doing, Chance?" Her words were cold and empty.
It hadn't always been like that, though. You see, Layla and I used to be good friends. We were inseparable, and along with Dana, had a so-called 'everlasting bond'. That all changed once grade seven came around, and then she just disconnected. She was nasty, she didn't care. Only about boys. I tried talking to her and asking her why she was being like that, but there was no use.
My mind faded back to reality. "Pardon?" I probably sounded dazed as I spoke.
"I asked how you were," She snapped.
"I'm doing-"
"Whatever." She cut me off! The nerve of that girl! "I hope that you come to my party this weekend Adrian." She gave a sweet, innocent smile to him. I hoped he knew better.
"Um," he said, puzzled, "I'm not sure. I'll ask my mom and dad."
"DDDRRRRIIINNNNNNGGGGGGG!" The bell was a shock to Adrian and I, but evidently not Layla seeing as she was walking away.
"We should head to class." I wasn't really feeling so good anymore, but I guess it was better than my dream.
I walked into the L.A. class anticipating something to have exploded in my spot causing my odd whim of fabulous luck to end.
I was pleased to see Adrian tapping on the chair between him and Dana. I smiled and skipped over. I took a seat and something popped into my mind. "What did you whisper to me in the hall?" I had forgotten all about it. I was too distracted by Layla's stupid smirk that she had when she walked off.
"Help!" He said.
"Help? I don't think you need help. Now what did you tell me?" I didn't see why he was playing games with me.
"I said help to you. I wanted you to get her away from me. I suppose she scares to both of us!"
We both started laughing until the L.A. teacher shot me a threatening look. We quieted down until the opportunity to laugh in secrecy came.
"Class," Miss Brenditt began, "I have a really cool surprise for you guys today!" I loved Miss B. She wasn't like most other teachers. She was only thirty, so she wasn't a crab. I adored how she taught. I wanted to have each class with her.
The class erupted into a pile of chatter and Miss B. silenced it with a single finger. "Since we've been learning all about Animal Rights, I thought it was time to do something fun and less depressing. We're going on a field trip!" Chapter Seven: "Yes!" I exclaimed as I jumped out of my seat. "Oops," I said as I looked around, embarrassed. My cheeks were red. Adrian slid his hand onto my shoulder for re-assurance.
Yeah right! My heart was pumping faster than a race-car burns rubber. I made an attempt to move my eyes away from Adrian, but it was like everywhere I turned it was him.
I watched a horror movie. I thought of him. Ate cotton candy. Guess what? I didn't think of him. It was a dream. But he was eating cotton candy! I gasp at that!
I chuckled silently under my breath, but Adrian must have heard me. "What?" He smiled at me and gave such a cute, 'are you insane?' look.
"Oh," I giggled, "nothing at all." I couldn't face his adorable eyes that I just sunk into - see! I told you that I was crazy! That's all I can think about!
Oops again. I need to pay attention to Ms. B! Luckily she wasn't talking about the trip now.
"Ahem, back to the trip," she said as she cleared her throat. I was right on time for listening. "We will be going to visit PETA head-quarters! Then we will be going to do a protest which is not mandatory. You have the choice to stay and read at PETA, or come and protest a cause of your choice."
"Awesome!" I smiled and I could feel the glee shooting out from my pores. OK, that sounds ... gross. But I looked fab! (EGO, BOO.)
"Oh," Miss B began, "it seems that Chance is really excited." She set her gaze on me along with the rest of the class. "Could you hand these out please?" She plopped the info packages onto my desk. I would do anything for her now!
"Miss," I started, "can I thank you enough? I love PETA!" I was thrilled. Shocked! I wanted to meet Ingrid SO badly! She's the founder if you're wondering. (NOTE FROM AUTHOR: If you don't know what Peta is, Google search PETA and please go to the website.)
"I guess you cannot thank me enough, can you?" She laughed at my sheer delight over something so seemingly simple. "PETA has organized some major cool protests in the past and I recommend visiting the site before going any further. So, off to the computer lab?"
"YAY!" I exclaimed.
"What on earth are you so happy about?" Adrian asked me, puzzled.
Dana & I, super animal activists, described PETA & its work.
After the loud & short walk to the computer lab, I realized that I had completely forgotten about something - Hawaii!
"Dana!" I whispered quite loudly, but I guess that Dana's got impaired hearing cause of all of the loud music she's always jammin' out to! "DANA!" I said it more aggressively, which made her, Keenan AND Miss B turn around. "Sorry Miss B!" I gave a nervous smile and Miss B just rolled her eyes and looked away.
"Yeah?" Dana probably had no idea. She blew a bubble and looked at me like I was crazy - gee, that happens often to me!
"Have you been thinking about Hawaii?" I could instantly see the look of 'oops' in her eyes.
"Well," she hesitated, "it has been... no." She blushed but really had no reason to feel shameful because otherwise, I would have to feel ashamed as well and I was not ready for that!
"Hawaii?" Adrian didn't know! I forgot all about it, evidently. Walking proof that I had forgotten all about everything. "Chance!" Adrian shouted, snapping me out of my trance.
"W-what?" I stuttered, feeling kind of down.
"What are you guys talking about," he said as he stared right at me, "Hawaii?" He didn't look very pleased, but I'm sure that confusion added to that look.
"I'm sorry that I forgot to tell you. I've been super caught up. School is hard, parents pressure-" He cut me off right then.
"I know, and I feel that way too. I forgot to tell you that I want to go to Layla's dance. With you, of course. If you want to." He pleaded with his eyes and I knew that he was a great actor to pull that off on me.
"This whole," I inhaled and exhaled, "Hawaii thing. It's just a few week vacation. Penelope is moving there and we, Dana & Caylee as well as myself, are going there for a few weeks as I said. We just would love to spend some time with Pen before she leaves, but we have no choice since her parents are sending her any day.
"I'll miss you a lot." His look of anger had been extinguished and he now had a look of sadness in his eyes. I didn't want to leave either.
I couldn't have been more excited to get out of the lab. Some of the videos and things I watched were very sad. We discussed them after and headed back to class.
I was in my seat staring at the 'Be the cool you, don't be fake cool' poster at the front of the room. What if you weren't cool at all? Those messages were just tacky and no one really likes them. Probably not even teachers. I dared to ask Miss B and she stated the obvious nay.
"Did you tell," Dana motioned to Adrian with her eyes, "him that we're going for a few weeks?" She chewed her gum like a cow chews on grass, and I just had to give her a look that she knew too well.
"Yeah," I sighed, "and he wasn't thrilled." I started to sweat thinking that the trip was actually only in two weeks! "DANA!" I shouted, wide-eyed. "We forgot! It's only in two weeks! Oh my!" We both got up and shouted passionately. I loved PAFTY. Everything is considered 'art' in some way. Even silly girls screaming.
Adrian got up and pulled my chair closer to his. I sat. Silly boys.
"We need to shop for her party, don't we?" He was actually a shopper! I could NOT believe it.
"Are you crazy!" If he were a dog, his ears would have been flat down. "I bet you're crazy. But crazy people have shopping skills. Go at lunch? I have credit!" I held up my mom's card that I brought for en emergency. I could pay her back anyway.
"I guess we should!" Adrian was happy again after I scared him. I gave him a friendly hug and as usual, my mind was cleaned out when the bell sounded.
"DRRRRRRINNNNGGG!!" Bell, I don't know what to think about you. You're on my 'not sure' list. Chapter Eight: Tonight felt even better than the other night when I got back to my dorm. I was so tired that I just undressed to my undergarments and jumped into my bed.
I was about to drift off until the phone rung.
Oh my gosh. I couldn't even sleep anymore!
"Hello?" I must have slurred when I spoke. I was drifting off, my eyes fluttering, despite being on my feet.
"Hey." I recognized the voice. No way!
"Mommy! I missed you SO much! How was Cuba?" My mom was a lucky dog! She got to go to Cuba! I know that I was going to Hawaii, but she was lucky too.
"Cuba was great! Your father..." She sounded a bit distant as I thought the worst.
"He what? What's wrong?" I was beginning to freak out. My head spun around like a merry-go-round on a rampage.
"He got a major sunburn! He had to be hospitalized! I told him, 'Don't you fall asleep on that chair!' and what does he do?"
"Mom!" I shouted. Man, I was relieved to hear that he was OK.
"Yes, hun?" She sounded like she hadn't just scared the living heck out of me.
"I-" I stuttered, "I was trying to sleep, and maybe I should go back to bed." I yawned and fell into the computer chair. I looked up at the green ceiling. I could hear my mother was washing dishes or something.
"Oh, what was that?" She hummed a little before she actually thought about the fact that she was on the phone. "Oh, yes, yes. I think bed would be good for you and I. I was just so excited to call you after Cuba that I raced to the phone."
"Yeah," I smiled. "I missed you lots, Mom. Happy you called, even though it's midnight." I leaned back in the chair and grinned. My heart melted at the though of seeing her before I left for Hawaii.
"Ok, hun. Get to sleep sweetie. Love you. Have wonderful dreams!" She was very cheery. She always knew how to calm me before bed.
"Night, Mom." I hugged the pillow that I was holding from my bed. I gently placed the phone on the receiver and thanked Karma that the girls weren't back yet.
But curiosity overtook my small attention span.
I flipped open my laptop lid and went on Expedia. I had to plan this out. No, wait!
I shut the browser. No net surfing for me at midnight. I needed to go home, I decided.
I picked up the receiver again and dialed my home number. "Hello?" My mother sounded like an angel when she answered.
"Hey, Mom. It's me again." I began packing an outfit for the next day. I crammed it all into my laptop case, threw my laptop in there & the permission slip for the PETA trip.
"Chance!" My mom sounded happy but surprised to hear my voice. "What are you doing calling? Aren't you going to bed?"
"I'd like to go home if that's alright with you." I didn't even use a pleading tone. I knew it wasn't needed.
"I'll send... on second thought, I'll drive over. Your father," she paused, "well, his rear is too hurt to dri-"
"Enough!" I didn't want to hear about his rear. "Just come. Thanks Mommy. I love you."
"Yes, too much info I guess. Love you too honey. Night!" My Mom was coming and I would get to be home for a night! I normally left to go home every few weekends.
After leaving the girls a short note, I grabbed my bag and ran over to the boys' housing. The guards knew me well enough to know that I was only in there to say 'Hi' or something.
I pounded at Adrian's door and a tall guy answered. I peeked in before saying anything and saw Adrian listening to music. "Um, hi." I was scared-ish to talk to this guy. "Can I come & see Adrian for a tiny second?" I smiled at the tall boy and he smiled back.
"Sure thing! Don't be shy to ask." He looked at Adrian and make a motion with his head that pushed towards me. "Come on in!"
I chatted it up with Adrian a bit as I looked out his window. I would be able to see my mother from his window a lot more than mine. I turned to face Adrian and I saw him slipping on his jacket. "What are you doing?" I just had to ask Adrian, despite that I knew that he was going outside with me.
"What do you think?" Adrian grinned at me. Busted on my part!
"OK, she's here!" I was thrilled to see my Mom's lime-green Prius pull into my personal parking spot. No, I didn't have a car ... yet. I expected a blue Prius when I hit sixteen.
We reached the car & my Mom stepped out to put my bag in the trunk. She noticed Adrian off the bat. "Well now," she smiled, "who are you?" She winked at him.
"I'm Adrian, pleased to meet you Mrs. Callins!" He held out his hand, but knowing my mom - yep. She gave him a firm hug.
"You seem sweet. You two are?" She looked back and forth.
"No Mom! We're not dating." I could feel the burning sensation rising in my cheeks. "Bye, Adrian." I gave him a big hug. I wished it wouldn't end. I soaked up his scent which should last me the night. I sighed. "Come on Mom."
"Bye Callins girls," he laughed, "and come back tomorrow Chance!" He waved as we drove off into the dim moonlight.
"Hey Dad! I'm home!" He was sitting in a bucket of salt water with a pale face that brightened when he saw me.
"Chance!" He looked down at his swimsuit and laughed. "I guess you know what this is about." He pointed to his trunks. "Come over here!"
I trotted over, surrendering my bag. "Daddy! I missed you SO much!" I hugged him with the biggest hug ever. I hated seeing him in pain... no matter where it hurt.
"Where's my hug?" My mom had her hands pressed to her hips, but I could see her smile. I ran to her.
"I guess I forgot about hugging you when I saw you, Mom!" I hugged her and thought about how ecstatic I was to be home, despite the one-night-stay.
"You were too absorbed in that," fatal word coming, "boy, weren't you?" She winked at me.
"Mom! Dad alert!" I made the ix-nay sign with my hands pressed to my throat.
"I still heard that." My dad said that as he watched Animal Cops. I was surprised that he laughed at my pain, even if it was kind of funny. Not really. I laughed too.
"Ooh! Animal Cops! Best show in the world, that's for sure!" I pulled up the rocking chair beside him and raised the volume.
I guess that it wasn't an exciting episode since I passed out right off.
I awoke to a commotion. It looked at the clock on the microwave. It was 3:00am! I peered from side to side. My mom and dad were in bed a long time ago.
I heard a few bangs at the door. My heart was pounding. I could hear it in my ears. There was a lump in my throat. I tip-toed over to the place where we kept the sports stuff and I pulled out the baseball bat.
"Hello?" I was so mortified to see a face appear at the window! I screamed so loud that I think I burst my ear drums! I took a second look before running and I was shocked but I calmed down to see who it was.
"Chance?" Adrian knocked at the window. I let out a sigh of relief and I trudged to the door.
"Adrian!" I shouted quietly at him and I grabbed at my chest. I didn't think that the heart-pounding would go down for at least an hour. "You do realize you scared me half to death, right? I am having a heart attack!"
"It's alright!" He laughed at my misfortune and I smiled at him. I can't be mad at him! He hugged me and grabbed my arm. He sat me down on the sofa.
"It's about Layla. I have to tell you something."
"It couldn't wait until tomorrow, could it?" I still was amazed that he came at 3:00am!
"No," he said stuttering, "not really." He looked down to the floor and I felt as if something was wrong.
I should always follow my instincts.
"What's wrong?" I had no idea what to think.
"I was chatting on MSN earlier." He let out a big sigh and I saw his eyes sparkle, but not a good one, a sad, teary sparkle.
"Yes?" I was wondering why he hesitated.
"Layla was online too. And you see," he gulped, "Layla likes me. She asked me out."
"WHAT?" I started laughing! It was too funny until I saw his blank face. "What did you say? I hope that you humiliated her! Oh my gosh." I tried to give him a hug but he just stared.
"I said yes." His face remained emotionless.
"You," I stuttered, hoping he was joking, "you said yes?"
"Yeah." He seemed sort of pleased. "I mean, she's actually nice. She thinks that you hate her."
"Are you crazy?" I wanted to throw a brick at his face. It sounds hilarious, and I'm sure it is awesome to see. "You said yes. I don't get it."
"I like her! What's so hard to get?" He shook his head and stared into my eyes. "You wouldn't get it."
"You know WHY?" I started to tear up and couldn't hold it in. "I liked you! I liked you a lot! I guess that Layla is a lot better than me. It's just because I don't show off in front of you. I'm me. And that's too much for you isn't it!"
"Chance, it's not like that!" He tried to come close to me but I couldn't let him. I felt like my heart was being nailed to a plank to be burned in a fire.
"Get out." I said it as coldly as I could. I didn't want to hear another word. "Out!" As he was walking out, I had to say something. "I guess Layla's so important that," I unclipped my necklace, "she can have this. I was going to give the other half to you. Expect it tomorrow." I tossed it to him.
He looked down at it. It was half of a heart. "Chance, please don't," I saw a tear run down his cheek, "please don't take this the wrong way."
"I said out!" I screamed at him and I didn't care if my parents heard.
Why Adrian? What did Layla want from me? I didn't get how she could possibly benefit from wrecking my life. I hated her. I hated Adrian alike. How could I have fallen for him?
I ran upstairs and let my tears flow into my pillow. My world plummeted into the darkness.
I was at school the next day eating lunch and feeling sad for myself. I had been alone the whole day since I didn't want to face the girls. Why Layla? I thought. You know what? I'm going to find her right now. I got up from the lunch table and walked up to Layla. She smiled a smug smile at me.
"Layla," I questioned in a sour tone, "why do you like wrecking my life?"
"What ever do you mean?" She put on a fake pouty face. Her face needed a brick even more. "Oh, and Adrian is cute." She smiled and sighed.
"Yeah, he's a doll." Natasha cowered beside Layla. I shot her a mean glance & she backed off and turned in the other direction. Natasha, the little side-kick, seriously ticked me off. She should stand up for herself! I don't think she's happy being bossed around by Layla.
"He's such a doll. I think I'll kiss him today!" She grinned with sheer delight at my misery.
"I just wish that you would have considered that you had great friends before boys were your life." With that I walked away only to turn around once. She looked gloomy & shocked that I had guts. I decided that I should go and find the girls. I needed to tell them all this.
They saw me walking towards the table and I could see the disbelief in their eyes. "Chance!" Dana seemed really surprised. Did they know the news? "Why didn't you talk to me in class all day? And, um," she looked at Penelope, "I heard about Layla & Adrian. Hug!" Dana pulled me close and I cried on her shoulder.
"Chance! It's going to be OK. We're going to Hawaii. You'll forget about him." Caylee sounded so upbeat about a situation where I felt not upbeat but just beat.
"It's true, Chance! There's a lot of cuties there!" Pen flipped through a magazine and pointed to a photo. It was an advice column.
"Oh, gosh," Dana sighed, "not another column."
"It's precisely that." Pen smiled as she scooted closer to me. "Listen to this."
"I'm all ears!" I was open to hearing that stupid column.
"If you're a Pisces, Miss March Chance, then you've probably been tricked into love this month. That's if you're single. You've made a commitment not to someone else, but rather to yourself. Break it right away as your love life is a sunken ship with salvageable wreckage. You can only put the pieces of your ship back together if you move on."
"Wow." Caylee sipped her milkshake. "That's Chance."
"Move on," I echoed. "I've gotta move on." Chapter Nine: The next weeks passed like nothing was happening. We talked like I never, ever met Adrian. Dana, however, didn't ditch Keenan. I loved seeing her happy.
But each time I saw them hug...
I thought about Adrian.
My heart went heavy when I walked into class & had to sit beside him. Musical Instruments was not only my most hated class, but I had to sit beside someone that was equally dreadful as Musical Instruments.
"Hi." I could not believe he actually had the nerve to talk to me. "I know how you're feeling, but-"
I stomped away. Over to the TEACHER'S desk. I hated Miss Lapore and I was actually going to see her when I didn't need to.
"Miss Lapore?" I felt timid and shy talking to her.
"Yes?" She actually answered me in a pleasant tone. Maybe I was wrong about her.
"May I please be seated," I hesitated since this was something Miss L. hated to be asked, "could I sit somewhere else?" I shut my eyes, prepared to be yelled at.
"Sure. Who would like to switch with Chance?" She was actually announcing that to the class? I liked Miss L. from then on!
My eyes, even though I specifically told them not to, shifted over to Adrian. He was cute, nice, smart & funny. Everything I wanted. Until he caught me looking at him. Then he needed a brick. Badly. His stupid blue eyes.
He looked to the floor and I felt worse than ever.
My iPod did a number on my thoughts (not to mention my hearing.)
I couldn't wait until Saturday.
It was finally Thursday! I hummed as I walked to the buses.
OUCH! MY HEAD!
Oh no. Adrian! We bumped into each other. Again. Like when we met.
"Sorry about that." He really wanted to talk to me, however, the feeling was not mutual in any way, shape or form!
"Ugh." I spat out 'Ugh' and it felt amazing. Mean, but fab.
"Chance-"
It was too late. Hips swinging, I was trotting to my bus.
He had already said my name too many times as far as I'm concerned.
"Have you got everything?" My mother was gently placing everything into my pink suitcase. "Make sure! As I say-"
"Triple check, I know." I could tell what she was going to say right off the bat. "I know a little too well." I muttered beneath my breath. "And yeah. I've got everything."
"How could he break your heart?" My mother turned to face me and plopped down onto the bed.
"What?" I had no idea how she knew. "How do you know about..." I sighed.
"Oh, please. You looked at him like he was candy. Let me tell you, he was." She shook her head. I knew she didn't mean to make me feel like I lost something.
Except I did.
"Despite the fact that he was boy-candy," she said in an 'on-the-bright-side' manner, "he just isn't right for you."
"But that doesn't answer my question!" I whined.
"Just listen," she said in a caring but firm tone. "He was cute, and you're sad. He must have done something to make you sad. Hawaii is on Sunday. That's three days away. If it's not a boy related reason, then I'm not a mother."
"Mom," I said as I teared up, "he's a jerk!" I leaned on her shoulder and cried as she rubbed my back with a comforting stroke.
"Will this make you feel better?" She pulled out a brand new TOTALLY cute dark pink halter! I loved it!
"A bit." I blushed and grabbed it from her hands. I slipped it on and emerged from the bathroom. I spun around. "How does it look?" I smiled, more of an ear to ear grin, and hugged her.
"Let's finish packing."
"Dana," I whispered in the auditorium the following day. We were watching some movie about the War. No thanks.
"Uh-huh?" Dana kept focused on the screen and scribbled something down.
"Oh shoot!" I pulled out a piece of paper from my laptop case and began to scribble what she had written. "Notes, right?"
"Uh-huh."
"Is that all you can say?"
"Uh-huh." I could see her dimples sinking in.
"Oh, don't laugh at me!" We both started to giggle until Mr. Cannick shot us a warning glance.
"Three strikes, better known as my STARES, and youuuuur out!" In a manly voice, Dana mimicked Mr. C as I laughed. He shot me yet another glance but then smiled.
"Think everyone knows about Hawaii? Confirmed!" I clapped my hands a little bit & Dana furrowed her brows in a 'what' manner. "Mr. C just smiled at me! I guess he knows."
"Uh-huh." I shoved her and we both stared at the screen again.
Until that blue-eyed little GRR looked at me.
"Chance!" He was whispering as loud as he could, and I could hear. But I didn't care. "Pssst! Chance!" He motioned his head toward the exit.
Should I make a break for it? I had no idea what to think. Impulse, however, is a very strong word. Chapter Ten: Before I knew it, I was panting. I was scared. I wasn't sure what to think.
But then I just laughed.
"Chance," he said. "I, we, um." He sighed.
My heart was pounding not only because of the adrenaline of sneaking out of the auditorium, but because I was beside him.
Adrian.
I felt so stupid, but my heart began to encrust a hard shell over my brain.
“We shouldn’t have fought,” he said at last, followed by a deep sigh. “I shouldn’t have gone out with Layla, either.”
“You’re right,” I said, “about both. Especially Layla.”
“Why?” he guffawed, nudging my arm with his elbow. “Like someone?”
“Don’t be stupid.” I just said it like that. Like I wanted him to know.
I mean, when we fought, I told him that I liked him. But I thought that he couldn’t be thinking of that. I’m so sure that he was thinking I was overreacting. But I wasn’t. No lies, no more deception, and hopefully no more of him drooling over Layla.
“Mmm hmm,” he laughed. “Sure thing. Well I know there’s no love in the air between me and Layla.”
“Is there a possible split between you two?” I said in a hopeful manner.
“Maybe,” he sighed. “She’s alright, well, mean, but,” – he paused- “she’s, I dunno.”
I thought of something to quickly change the subject. Then I thought of the perfect thing. "Come on," I whispered, walking toward the exit that lead to the back of the school.
"Where are we-"
"Shh," I said as I kept a finger over my lips. "We can't let them know we're leaving."
"Where are we going?" he murmured.
"Swimming." He gave me a shocked look, but then we both laughed as I pushed on the exit door.
"Oh yeah." He grinned a sort of, well, creepy grin. But cute.
"You remember that we have swimming next, right?"
"Mmm hmm," he nodded. "Oh no, we are not!" He grabbed my shoulders and shook me, "we cannot go swimming!"
"Why not?"
"Uh," he said as he thought of something. "Well, for starters, THAT'S SKIPPING."
"Mr. C loves me. I'm his fav," I giggled. "Oh, no offence," I winked.
"What about me?" He rolled his eyes. "Whatever. Give me an excuse."
"We went to the library. Research, you know?"
"Perfection!" He high-fived me.
Before I knew it, we were tip-toeing across the crisp green grass on the side of the auditorium. I heard a commotion and dove into the trees.
"OUCH!" I exclaimed, only to hear Adrian telling me to be quiet.
"Shh! I don't wanna get caught!"
"Alright, alright," I silenced Adrian. "Let's just get there quickly."
We passed the area where the - Um, bad kids - hung out without hesitation. They didn't care. Then came the teachers lounge.
"Oh gosh," Adrian was freaking out. "Right by the teachers. I can't."
"Let's go!" I grabbed his wrist and tugged him along. We dashed past the window and pressed our backs to the door.
"Release," - Adrian snapped - "your death grip!" He tugged at my hand. I kept it there for a second for drama. I enjoy drama.
"Sorry," I smiled. "I just needed to let you know that I mean business."
"Alright, I'll forgive you," he laughed.
"Let's get swimming!" I pushed open the doors and immediately quieted down. I pulled Adrian close and felt my heart beat. I put my lips near his ear. "We need to tip-toe. Silence," I whispered.
"Yep, got it," he assured me. "Are you sweating? Scared?" He grinned and I smacked his arm.
"Nope," I said, rolling my eyes. "It's, uh, another reason." I was eager to change the subject. "Let's move in."
We made our way to the poolside in a ninja-like manner. I pressed my finger to my lips and listened with great concentration. I didn't want to blow this - I was going swimming at school with Adrian. Alone. Perfect much?
"Don't hear anything," Adrian whispered. "I'll go check the cabin." He walked over to the lifeguard's cabin and peeked in. "Nothing." He was finally talking and not whispering.
"Awesome." I grinned and pulled off my shirt. We - everyone who had swimming next - had our bathing suits below our clothes.
"I love your bikini! Pink is in," Adrian nodded. "I was actually going to get pink shorts!" I shot him a look. "No joke!"
"Yeah, yeah," I laughed. "I like your shorts. I guess blue is in," I said, I picking at my nail in a smug way. "I look better."
"I'll second that," he said, smiling. I blushed and dove in.
"It's super cold!" I exclaimed, hearing my voice bounce off of the high, white ceiling. "Jump in!"
"No way," he said, running to the slide. "I'm getting in with style!" He slid down the water slide into the deep end. I swam under, meeting up with him.
"Hold on, I know a secret," I said as I swam to the ladder. I scurried over to the light switch and flicked it off. All of the lights went out.
"Um," Adrian said as he treaded the water, "lights, camera, action... Forget about the camera and action. Lights please!"
"Hold on," I scolded. "How's this for lights?" I flicked another switch and the pool lit up.
"Man, Adrian gasped, looking like a child surrounded by candy. "And I thought this school was cheap."
"Mmm hmm," I agreed. "So did I. Until Coach Gunn told me about this!" I rushed over to the diving board, eager to have fun before swimming class started.
After a while, we heard a noise. It shook our bliss and turned it into fear. We dashed to the ladder, but there was no hope. Coach Gunn came walking in.
"Whoa!" He jumped back as he saw us. "Um, out." He pointed his thumb to the wall.
"We're sorry," I said, speaking for Adrian and I.
"I'm not very pleased," Coach Gunn said as he sat Adrian and I on the benches beside the pool. "You two should have came and told me you were swimming!"
"What?" Adrian and I said at the same time.
"We were sure we would get in trouble," Adrian said as we both smiled our relieved grins.
"Heck, no!" Coach Gunn laughed. "I like it when the students come and hang out here." He adjusted the lights. "I guess I can let you kids go and hang out up in the gym for a while. No harm in you missing swimming."
"Are you serious?" I said, shocked. "You rock!"
"Ha," he chucked. "There's not a need to thank me. I saw your swimming. I watched you pair for a while. Great laps, Adrian! And keep working on that dive Chance. Olympics?" He grinned at me and playfully punched my arm.
"No Olympics for me," I said. "I came to PAFTY to be a star!" I made jazz hands and we all laughed.
"OK, up to the gym," Coach Gunn shooed us.
"Thanks!" Adrian and I said in sync. Up the stairs, into the gym.
I love this school. Chapter Eleven: There I was, with the most dazzling boy in the school, working out. We were lifting weights, or at least I was attempting to, and just chatting it up and laughing.
“I can’t lift a single pound!” I laughed as I handed him the weight. I turned right to him and looked him deep in the eyes.
“You know, you look really pretty,” he said with a smile. “You’ve got amazing eyes.”
“Um,” I said, slowly morphing into a cherry tomato.
“You’re blushing!” he gasped with an exaggerated giggle. “You’re totally red. And you still look like a movie star.”
Oh no. He had done it! Code red. My face, that is.
“I can help you lift weights if you want,” he said, totally changing the subject. He acted like nothing happened. Like I wasn’t the color of molten lava. He was being so smug about it.
“Sure thing,” I laughed, pretending just as well as he was.
“So,” he said casually, handing me two five-pound weights. “Like anyone?”
“Stop asking me that,” I said, trying to sound irritated. But I wasn’t; I wanted to let him know. Now. Before Hawaii. “Well,” I stalled, attempting to stay my regular color. “I guess I like this one guy.” I looked up at him from the bench and shook my head. “Aren’t we supposed to be lifting weights?”
“You know,” he sighed, putting the weight down, “I like this one girl too.”
“It’s just that,” I groaned, “I don’t think he understands. I don’t want to change for him. But I have a little bit.” I lay down on the bench and stared at the ceiling. “Why can’t he just change for me? Why can’t he just, you know, stop dating that smug little boom?”
“Maybe he’s scared.”
“Like he’s scared.” I looked him in the eyes, which took a lot of courage. “I’m not that ferocious.”
“Well maybe you’re the best he’s ever had!” he shouted. “He’s used to dating these stuck up, mean girls. Ones that don’t know how to have a good time.”
“Let’s just stick to lifting weights,” I snapped. “I don’t picture him dumping his girlfriend and changing his life for her. Maybe she’s just, well, too much to handle.”
“I’ll second that.” He grabbed a blue weight and began to move his arm up and down. I watched it as it moved. “Plus, maybe he didn’t want to take a chance. With Chance. He didn’t want to blow it with the prettiest, most funny girl ever.” He smiled at me. I turned away and wiped a tear from my eye. “Those are rare. Really rare.”
And there it was.
We didn’t speak until the gym teacher called up to us:
“Chance, Adrian, the bell rung!”
“Well,” I swallowed, “I’m off to Hawaii on Saturday.”
“Yeah,” he sighed, scratching his head casually. “Saturday. How long will you be gone for?”
“Three weeks.” There it was. I can’t believe I had said it. It seemed so final. I just didn’t want it to happen anymore. I thought about it a little more and I laughed.
“What?” Adrian said, cocking his head.
I rolled my eyes as I then pondered how I had, just a few days ago, hated Adrian and wanted to lunge a brick at his forehead.
But this was different. I wanted him in my suitcase in Hawaii with me.
In my dreams.
“See you in a while,” I said timidly, waving to him as I tip-toed off.
“Facebook, e-mail, and…” Adrian said, but he dropped his hands to his sides. He looked to the floor. I could see his raw emotions, and I could swear that I saw a little tear.
I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t just walk away without saying a goodbye to him.
I turned to him and gave him a tackle attack hug, causing the two of us to topple to the soft, blue mats on the floor.
We just giggled and hugged. Then we moved closer to each other. But I couldn’t let IT happen, no way.
We both looked at one another and, still laughing, we pulled ourselves up onto our feet.
I looked at him and I knew there wasn’t a thing else to be said. “Bye.” And with that, I had disappeared, down the hallway and out the door.
On the bus ride home, I peeked back into my mind and felt hazed.
How could it be that today was a reality? I had missed most of school, I had hung out with Adrian, and I had discovered a new color of red (note to Chance: could this elusive color only be found on cheeks?).
It was surreal, amazing, and now I was going to Hawaii. But was Hawaii what I really wanted?
I pulled out a book, Nerd Gone Popular by one of my favorite authors who calls herself Jess, and began to scan through it. I couldn’t focus, though, because I was too busy thinking about Adrian, Dana, and everyone else who I was associated with.
With all of this spinning around in my head, sleeping seemed like the best option at that point. I rested my head against my backpack and fell into Dream Land, which was also filed with gum (seeing as how it appeared in my hair).
I awoke to find that I was a mere two stops away from my stone farmhouse. The bus driver spoke through the intercom: “Jen, your house is next!” She was a sweet driver with clear skin and a pretty face. I’m sure that she could be something more than a bus driver.
But there’s something else that I was thinking about. As usual, I was fretting on about Hawaii and Adrian. Why couldn’t I just stop!
After forcing myself to read the ‘Emergency Escape’ window directions backwards, the bus pulled up to our driveway. “Chance, you’re off honey! Have a great time in Hawaii, and bring me something back, ‘kay sweetie?” She hugged me when I walked down the aisle, and I could hear a few people utter ‘bye’ and ‘I love you Chance’ and ‘I’ll miss you’. It was great to know that the girls on my bus would miss me.
But they have time to miss things, and to think about things, whereas I’m trapped in my own boy-crazy mind.
I never had a boyfriend, though. Whatever. Chapter Twelve “Now, are you one-hundred percent sure that you’ve got everything you need?” my mother called to me from the kitchen. “You’re not going to be able to have me send you anything from Hawaii!”
“I know!” I said, agitated. She’d been asking me this for the past three hours.
I had been home and there she was, sitting at the kitchen table. She had suitcases and a bunch of new outfits.
“Aw,” I cooed, “this shirt is SO cute!” I cradled my ‘Cuddly but I can rip off your face’ shirt. Cute.
After I had packed my clothes, I packed some other belongings, like conditioner and my toothbrush.
Once I was done that, there was time for books and stuff. My laptop was zipped up and I was ready to go out to the movies, where my mother was bringing me before I left the next day.
“Perfect,” she said, walking into my room, jingling the keys in her hand. “Let’s grab those tickets and head to the theatre. I can’t wait to see Marley & Me!”
“The book was amazing,” I said dreamily. “But really sad. Too sad.” I shed a small tear whenever I thought about Marley. I was just like that for some reason.
“How far is the theatre?” I questioned, picking at my seatbelt. “The ride usually seems shorter.” She didn’t answer. “Hello?”
“Stupid rain,” my Mom muttered under her breath, obviously ignoring my questions.
But she was right.
It was seriously pouring down from the dark sky, pounding on the hood of our green car. I just shut my eyes and tried to think about something other than the slippery roads.
“Are we almost there?” I asked, sighing.
“Shh,” my mother barked. “I’ve gotta concentrate on these roads. They’re bad.”
“Turn back,” I said, nearly pleading. “Come on.”
“Oh Chance,” she said, rolling her eyes. “There’s not a need to turn around.”
“Are you sure?” I said, quite unsure myself.
“Drama queen,” she laughed, “we’re almost there.”
We turned the corner to exit from the highway. I noticed something wasn’t right with the road.
“Mom!” I exclaimed.
But it was too late.
I awoke in a blur. My head was throbbing; I could feel the warm blood dripping down my forehead.
I turned over to the side of me and wondered what had happened. I tried to remember, but my mind just couldn’t quite grasp the situation.
Then it hit me: a car crash.
“Mom!” I shrieked in a panic. I unbuckled my mangled seatbelt and wriggled out of the spot I was in – the dashboard was pinned to my stomach. “I’m stuck!” I screamed, but I just knew that no one could hear me. I felt isolated, alone, scared, and I just wanted someone – anyone – to turn up and help me.
After countless minutes, I managed to get my stomach unstuck, leaving my thighs and lower still trapped.
My mom was now attempting to speak, but I was just relieved to hear that she was alive. My pulse was racing, and claustrophobia was kicking in. “Help!” I screamed, time after time, but I wasn’t happening.
I was soon sweating and swearing, pounding the windows. A few cars drove by, but they didn’t bother taking a peek into the ditch.
Uh oh. Hawaii.
I couldn’t help but think that I was supposed to be boarding a plane any time soon, and that it wasn’t going to be happening! That was unless I could get out of here.
I was becoming dehydrated, hungry, insane, and I was still bleeding. It was only a matter of time until I was unconscious and mine and my mother’s chances of surviving became just a fragment of my imagination.
“She’s alive!” He wiped his forehead.
“Get her into there!”
“Did you find out who they are? The second one is still here!”
There was a lot of stirring going on around me. I could feel the weight being lifted off of my stomach. Red surrounded my eyes, but it was now cold and not hot like before.
The car was being pulled apart, and I vaguely remember my mother being pulled into an ambulance. I tried to make a sound – any sound – but I was mute. I had probably been screaming for a good half hour before I had fallen unconscious.
I was then myself being lifted into an ambulance. All I can recall is the sound of the sirens blaring, the numbness of my arm where the morphine drip was, and the doctors fussing over some machines.
“Are you okay, sweetie?” An attractive young nurse with a blonde bob-cut was holding a meal tray when my eyes fluttered open. “Here you go,” she said, placing the tray gently on the night table at my side.
“W-where,” I slurred, trying to speak, however I was too dazed.
“Aw,” she said with sympathy, “you’re fine. Just in a hospital room. What a nasty crash! Those roads.”
“Mother,” I said, choking on that one word. “Where?”
“Sweetie, your mother is just fine. She’s at the other side of the room. Look over,” the nurse said calmly, motioning to the opposite side of the room.
“Mom!” I was immediately relieved, and I could recount most of what happened, a few bits and pieces missing. “What time is it?” I said, my words running together.
“It’s just after ten.”
I got a better look at the dull room around me. There were machines, very industrial windows and a series of floral pattern curtains to separate pieces of the room. There were a few other doors and windows that allowed me to peek into the hallway. There were doctors, patients and family members stirring in the halls.
“Just get some more sleep, huh?” The nurse smiled at me warmly. “Press this,” – she handed me a little switch – “if you need anything.”
