PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS 6 The Fate of Annabeth Written By: H.L Olsen Percy Jackson and the rest is by Rick Riordan, so I DON'T OWN ANYTHING!!!!! 1 My Only Hope Doesn't Appear In My Pocket I wish I could say my day was going pretty well. But, for a demigod, days are never going in a good direction. It started with a strange dream. I was running, but I didn't know who from. My feet were sore, and I could hear the monster gaining on me. Then, a shrill cry cut through the air. “Annabeth!” I screamed. Nothing. The monster was closing in on me. Then, the scene shifted. Annabeth was in front of the Fates. “Your life was well thought out, Annabell.” Clotho said, spinning a gold thread slowly. They were standing on top of a gray cliff. Beneath was a green lake, with agonized souls swirling around. “My name is Annabeth!” Annabeth tried to yell, but she was in pain, and weak. “Never mind that! Lachesis has chosen wisely. We have waited long enough to cut your thread, but now is the time.” Atropos said, holding Annabeth's thread. Atropos held some shears. Annabeth attempted a scream when the shears closed. I woke up because somebody was shaking me. It was Grover. “Ble-eh-eh! You stopped breathing!” Grover bleated, gnawing on a pencil. “Sorry, I was having a nightmare.” I rubbed my eyes. “What are you doing here?” I asked. The window was open. Third time somebody had broken in through the fire escape. Grover looked nervous. “Thalia sent me an urgent Iris message! Her and Annabeth were having a sleep-over, and Thalia went out for a second. She came back, and Annabeth was gone!” Grover whimpered. I groaned. Why can't demigods have normal lives? I glanced at the clock. 3:42 A.M. My heart started to race. The strange dream. “Grover,” I panicked, “I had a strange dream. I was running from this monster, and Annabeth screamed. Then, the place changed. Annabeth was facing the Fates. They killed her. I... I can't let this happen! I-I.... I love her!” I covered my mouth at the last part. Grover had been gone when me and Annabeth started going out. Grover just laughed. “Hey, I knew it all along. But your dream sounds serious. Let's go get Nico and..” But Grover was interupted. I heard my mom laughing. What in Hades was she doing awake at three in the morning? “Grover...” I said. A familiar smell was wafting through the air. Grover gulped. “I smell it too.” We both started to scramble, packing all sorts of things we'd need for a trip. The thing we smelled was a monster. My mom started to laugh again. Only this time, she started to talk. “Oh Poseidon, you're a card!” I could tell this monster was trying to make her sound disoriented. But I knew that my mom wouldn't say 'You're a card!'. Plus, my mom had married Mr. Paul Blofis about eight months ago. Grover and I made a hasty escape down the fire escape. Then, out of no where, my mom's head popped out the window. “PERCY JACKSON, GET BACK HERE NOW!” But that wasn't her voice. It was much deeper. Suddenly, her head started to morph shapes. And all me and Grover were doing was gaping at this monster. Before we could identify what in the heck this was, something pulled us away. “What the...?” Was all I could say before I blacked out into the stars. When I woke up, Grover and I were tied to a pole. “Ble-eh-eh-eh! Your awake, Percy-y-y-y!” Grover bleated. “Where are we?” I took in the scene. The cliffs were red, all shades of scarlet and colors like that. Fire and lava was bursting everywhere, and the heat was insane. And this is really bad for a son of Poseidon. Suddenly, somebody walked in. Or should I say, something. It looked like a Phoenix, but then burst into flames. A teenage girl was in it's place. She was wearing a skin tight, sequin dress of silver, that made her look hot against the magma flares. She had big, red lips, a perfect face, and brown hair. But what really stood out were her eyes. The color of the sea, blue. Then they turned pink, and her cheeks became rosy. “Hello, my name is Deekacedus. My brother is Aegipan. I thought he might help you, so I brought you to my home.” Deekacedus smiled. I snorted. “If you really want to help us, then why are we tied up?” I said. Deekacedus only smiled. “Well, most half-bloods I bring here try to kill me when they wake up. So, I tied you up for my own safety.” Grover couldn't stop staring at Deekacedus. “Percy, Deekacedus is a sparti, an earth-bound warrior. Most people don't know about her, because she was sent to a fiery pit as a punishment.” Grover said. Deekacedus looked at Grover strangely. “How did you know that, you stupid satyr?” She growled, her eyes turning blood red. I didn't know what to do. Deekacedus was angry, and I was sweating to death. Worst of all, I couldn't reach Riptide in my pocket, no matter how hard I tried. “I'm going to die if I don't get some water soon!” I panted. My tongue was now dry. My throat burned. Deekacedus glared at me. “You'll be the first to die!” She laughed, jumping into a pit of lava. “Great, the only person who could possibly help us just jumped into a pit of lava!!!” I said. My voice was dry, and didn't sound right. Grover thought. “I don't know! Pa-ah-ah-ah-an!” Grover wailed, even though both him and I knew Pan was dead. A magma flare ripped through the air. I had an idea. “Grover, do you have anything in your pockets?” I asked. “Yeah, a half eaten burrito. Why?” Then he got my plan. “Sorry, burrito!” He slithered his hand down, and barely touched it. Grover managed to pull it out. I flicked my wrist toward him, and grabbed the burrito. With my dyslexia, and ADHD, this was going to be hard. But, it was my only shot. The next magma flare that burst up was the closest. I threw the burrito, and the flare shot out magma bits everywhere. I was scared one was going to hit me, but then I remembered something. “Grover, dodge all the debris you can.” I had taken a bath in the River Styx last summer. I was invincible now. Some magma managed to hit my hair, and my arm. But it didn't hurt. Finally, some lava hit the rope. It fizzled through it, and burnt it just enough for me to rip through it. They slid down to my ankles. Grover fell over, just as a magma rock flew where his head had been only two seconds ago. I put my hand in my pocket, for Riptide(I grab for me sword for reassurance sometimes). But, nothing was there. Riptide was gone. “Grover!” I wailed, “Riptide isn't in my pocket!” Grover's eyes went to a new level in wideness. “We are doomed!” He cried, taking off his pants. I knew he'd want to show his furry goat legs for a while, but he didn't want to freak out the public. Grover started to eat his pants. You know its bad when your best friend starts to eat his pants. That burrito sure made the temperatures rise, and threw off the lava. It was spewing everywhere. I knew the whole place was going to be a lava pool in a second, and if we didn't get out of here we would be fried to a crisp. The next thing happened in slow motion, partly because of my dyslexia I'm guessing. A giant wave of lava washed up onto us. Grover jumped into my arms, his little goat tail on fire. Then, somebody came in and took us away. I felt the cool air of the dawn against my neck. I took a step back when he released us. We were at The Statue of Liberty. I took a look at who saved us. He didn't smell of a monster like Deekacedus, so I decided I was safe. For now. He looked normal, waist up, but then you looked down... And he had the legs of a satyr. Then I saw the tail. It was the tail of a fish. I gasped. This person was... “Hello,” He said, “I'm Aegipan.” Between what had just happened, I couldn't just understand what just happened. Aegipan had curly, brown hair, and tan skin. He had blue eyes, and was starting to grown a beard. “I'm a half-blood, like you.” I stared at his fish tail. “Then what's with the tail?” I asked. “I was working with Pan, and he gave me the reward of immortality. So, I was considered a god. When Typhoeus threatened the gods, most hid themselves in animal form. I couldn't decide between a goat and a fish, and well...” He trailed off, scratching his neck. “So, now you're stuck as a demigod goatfish.” I said. Grover just stared in awe. “You worked with Pan?” He asked. “Yeah, and Dionysus, and Hermes, and Zeus. I was never claimed at Camp Half-Blood, so some people assumed Pan, Dionysus, Hermes, or Zeus was my father. I don't even know.” Aegipan said. “I think it's Pan.” I said. “Well, I can control seas. That gave me an oblivious clue. So, what can you do?” I asked Aegipan. “I haven't really tried... but I will try Zeus first.” Aegipan lifted his arm in that air, grabbed an invisible lightning bolt, and threw it down. Nothing. “Maybe Hermes?” I said. “Try stealing something from me, that I won't notice.” I said. “Too easy. I already did that.” Aegipan said. He held up a pen. A familiar pen. “Riptide!” I said. “How did you get that?” I said. Grover winced. “I think he is a son of Hermes, duh. He can be a thief, when he wants to.” Grover said. Duh. Why didn't I think before I said? Aegipan twirled the pen in fascination. Then he uncapped it. Three feet of celestial bronze popped out. “Quite a weapon.” Aegipan remarked, tossing it to me. I put the lid back on Riptide, and slid it back into my pocket. “Now, Aegipan, can you help us? We need to find Thalia.” I asked. I thought Aegipan would know who Thalia was, because of his Camp Half-Blood experience. “Oh, Thalia's tree. Is it true she got out of her tree?” Aegipan asked. “Yeah, now we need to find her. “Well, lucky I'm a son of Hermes, because Hermes was also the god of travel!” Aegipan said. I'd dealt too much with Hermes for one lifetime, though. “Well, the water below is my specialty. Watch.” And I jumped into the sea below. 2 Thalia Burns Down An Orphanage I didn't like the drop to the water, but once I hit the water things felt much better. Except for all of the trash, since The Statue of Liberty is a tourist hot-spot and all. I willed the water to raise me up to where Aegipan and Grover stood waiting. “Hop on!” I told them. Aegipan jumped on immediately, but it took a little talking to get Grover to get on my wave. Aegipan splashed his tail in the water, sending a small squirt onto Grover. “Hey!” He said. I lowered the wave, so people who were starting to wake up wouldn't notice. I zoomed toward the nearest river. We were heading towards Annabeth's house pretty fast, but I could already tell this was going to be a three or four day trip. After all, she lives clear in San Fransisco and we were in New York. “I know we say this every time, but this is just like the old days!” I said. “Yeah, danger around every corner.” Grover sighed. For some strange reason, I couldn't stop thinking about Rachel. I mean... how many girls do you know that can lead you through an impossible maze? She was now the Oracle... I wondered what prophecies she'd been blabbing about. More or less, if she was single. I shook my head. I was dating Annabeth, not Rachel! I can't have my heart going in two directions at once... or can I? I almost smacked myself for thinking so stupidly. I'm not a cheater. No, Annabeth is my one and only love. I could almost hear her voice... “Seaweed brain.” She smirked... Made me long for her. Grover was poking the water uneasily. “How long am I going to be on this thing? I'm chilled to the bone!” Grover said. Why hadn't I thought about that before? Aegipan and I would be just fine, but Grover would freeze to death by soaking his furry rump. His fur was already drenched, and he had goosebumps on his arms. I knew I would have to think of something, to heat him up. Then a familiar voice was in my head. Yo boss, It said, Need some help? I laughed, because no matter how many times I told Blackjack to stop calling me boss, it never succeeded. Yeah, I told him, Grover is freezing to death! Blackjack whinnied in my head. On my way, boss! I knew I could count on Blackjack, no matter the situation. “So, Aegipan,” I wondered, “What in the heck is with Deekacedus?” Aegipan smiled. “Oh, that is just a test. To see if you are noble, of true heart, blah blah blah. She is just a mortal I put under a spell... that was funny when Grover thought she was put there for a punishment!” Aegipan laughed. Grover blushed. “Sorry, satyrs fall for stupid stuff like that all the time.” I could tell he was pretty embarrassed. “Ah, we all make mistakes.” I patted Grover on the back.
Suddenly, the sky rumbled. A lightning bolt burst in right where my wave was heading. What did I do now? I wondered. Another sudden thing happened: Blackjack hit me in the head. "Gow!" I said, rubbing the back of my head. Sorry, boss! Blackjack said. "Can you carry Grover for, oh, three more days?" I asked. The wind stirred currents around me. I knew something was wrong.
Another lightning bolt, then a crash of thunder. Then, something splashed into the water. I had to see what this was; so I took a dive into the water, only hoping my giant wave would hold up.
I couldn't see anything, because pollution was cutting off my view. But, silky black hair gave me a lead. It was sinking. I swam toward the hair. I saw Thalia, drowning.
Something about the water made her look; different. But, I guess she was completely different. No dark eye make-up. She was also wearing a silky pink dress. That was what really caught my attention. But, the water made her skin look pale and flawless. I grabbed her, and swam towards the surface, her limp body in my arms.
When we hit the surface, she gasped. Thalia spat out a bucket load of water, and lay retching. "Thalia," I said, dumbstruck, "You look different." Thalia sat up. "Stupid, Annabeth and I were getting ready to go somewhere, a formal event." Thalia muttered, half to herself. I didn't pry.
I soon decided Aegipan and I were the only ones who could handle this travel I'd set up; Grover had fallen asleep on an exhausted Pegasus, and Thalia was shivering. I veered the wave toward a marshy bank. Blackjack collapsed, and Grover rolled further into the bank, waking up. "Now my fur is smothered in gunk!" Grover whined. Thalia stood up, shakily. "I need a nap." She wobbled, and fell in a big mud puddle. Aegipan had fallen asleep half in and half out of the water, and the sun was just poking over the mountains, so I decided to take first watch on our rest.
Aegipan took the next shift. I fell asleep, dreading what nightmares I was about to have. And I had reason to worry. They were terrible. My first nightmare took place where I left off: Annabeth, dead. Atropos smirked, then kicked the limp body. I wanted to go cut her head off, but I couldn't. Atropos looked at Clotho. "Now, to pull her 'ghost' out. Clotho, you're the best at it, I just want to watch." I wondered why the Fates hated Annabeth. Oh wait, they hated anything that had ever lived.
Clotho walked over to Annabeth's pale body. Her gray eyes were staring into oblivion, which sent a pang into my stomach. Clotho reached her hand inside Annabeth's body, and ripped something out. It was her... ghost. It was faded, and light blue. Annabeth... er, her ghost was wearing the usual. Camp Half-Blood T-Shirt, jeans. Her Yankees cap was turned sideways. Annabeth's ghost was fighting. "Let me go! I'm not supposed to die yet! I didn't even get to tell Percy-" But Lachesis cut her off. "Throw her out. The 'garbage' of the Underworld." Clotho grinned. She held Annabeth's ghost over the green lake, and dropped the ghost. Annabeth's ghost screamed all the way down, before melting into the lake. I saw the lake start to swirl, and different people's souls making ghoulish faces. Worst of all, I saw Annabeth's ghost making a screaming face, before keeping on the slow twirl of the lake.
The scene shifted. I saw my mom, asleep. Out of the corner of my eye, a shadow moved. "Are you sure this isss what he wanted?" One shadow said. The shadow grew a second head; "Yesss!" I had a feeling this was a mutant Kampe, because the hissing sounded familiar. The shadow swooped over my mom, and the bed was empty.
I woke up, because the sun was piercing my eyes. Thalia now stood over me. "You were saying?" She laughed. I scrunched my eyebrows together. Thalia laughed again, and then I saw her thigh. Red. "You were saying, 'Annabeth, come back, noooooo!' Then other things I didn't understand." Thalia's laugh tore her now fragile-and-mud-covered dress.
I took a deep breath. "Just, go find a hospital. Leave." I said. After all, the 'marshy mud bank' was a man-made watch ditch for floods. A few feet up and poof; there was civilization. Glad nobody discovered us yet.
I also saw yet another thing(or didn't!) : Aegipan. He had disappeared. I was sorta glad; he was a big annoying. Thalia started to walk away, limping. I decided to go help her. "Hey, wait up!" I said. "Le'me help ya." And she leaned against my shoulder.
I told Blackjack to 'baby-sit' Grover, and keep an eye out for Aegipan. Of course, he didn't refuse. Halfway down the street, we spotted a hospital. It was surrounded by sky-scrapers, which made me wonder where we were. The hospital said: Minneapolis Hospital.
As we got closer, there was a tiny brown building: Minneapolis Orphanage. I felt bad; maybe we'd check by the place after to see if there were any half-bloods left alone there.
Inside the hospital, people started to stare. I mean, who wouldn't? Picture this: "Oh, uh, um, my girlfriend-" *kick* "Sister fell and cut her thigh open. I fell too. We need it sown back up." And we don't even have any money. How stupid was I?
I got up to the front desk. "Uh, she needs to get in right away." I said. The secretary looked at me strange. "Do you have an appointment?" I shook my head. "No, and I-" I had to think quick, so I said this; "I just found her passed out in a marsh down the street. She's kinda homeless." Thalia tried to kick me, but stopped when she moved her bad leg. The secretary sighed. "You will have to pay this off someday, Mr.?" She said.
Oh gods, she thought I was 18. And what if I said I wasn't? How would I explain a giant medical bill to my mom, who lived clear in New York? I would have to. "I'm not exactly 18 yet, so this will have to go on my mom's insurance. Sally Jackson." I told her everything she needed, and pointed down the hall. "Third door on your right."
Thalia and I limped down the hallway, entering the third door on the right. She lay down, lifting her leg up. "Oh gods, this hurts!" She said. I saw the end of it; it was at least three or four inches deep. "How did you do that?" I said. Thalia looked at me, as if it we oblivious. "When I traveled by lightning, I was escaping from something. The monster lunged, and managed to cut me. The end." She said. "Did it have any poisons?" I asked. It would be really bad if it did, because how would we explain an unknown poison in her cut? "Nah, I don't think so." Thalia murmured, her eyes closing.
Just then, the doctor walked in. "Hiya, Percy. Thalia." He said, reading a clipboard. "I've got some antibiotics, and I'm going to patch you back up." Just then he pulled out a liquid in a bottle. He poured some onto Thalia's wound. "Oooh!" Thalia said. "I forgot to say, I'm Doctor Harphy. Nice to meet you!" Dr. Harphy said, sticking his hand out.
I knew something had to be wrong with this guy. His eyes were huge, and never blinked. I grasped his hand firmly. We shook. Doctor Harphy pushed his hand on Thalia's wound. "Gaaah!" Thalia gasped, her eyes shooting open. I stared, and just before I cried "What are you doing?!?" Dr. Harphy took his hand off. I blinked. What the-
I rubbed my eyes. Then I saw Dr. Harphy in his true form: a harpy. I thought harpies were just women, but I guess I was wrong. Neck up, normal human. Below, falcon. "Apollo said he could help you but one more time." Dr. Harphy held held out his talon. Suddenly, a familiar item appeared their: a Yankees cap.
I almost cried. I put it on. I couldn't see my own hands. And an invisible tear rolled down my cheek. "Great things are to come from you, Perseus Jackson. But in a matter of moments, something will manage to find you." And Dr. Harphy vanished into thin air. Harpies were known to do that.
Just then, another doctor walked in. I quickly took off the Yankees cap. "Hello, Thalia Grace, Perseus Jackson." Then he saw Thalia's leg. "Uum, I was assigned to Thalia's leg." He said, baffled. I almost laughed. "It's okay, someone else helped us." And I took Thalia out.
Like I said I would, we stopped by the orphanage. A kind old woman greeted us. "Why heello young ones! Come see the children we have available!" And she lead us into a back room. All sorts of kids were all in a row.
One, though, I knew was different. She was about seven or eight, and she was somehow moving wooden blocks by pushing them with an invisible force. I bet the Mist didn't reveal that to the old lady.
I grabbed the girl. "Remember us?" I said, kneeling down. This girl had wide, blue eyes that lit up. "Are you my dad?" She asked in a squeaky voice. "No, no, me and Thalia are your siblings. We are here to take you home." The girl squealed. "Yay, I knew that Linda Croshard would find a home soon!" Linda said, clapping her hands. Her blond hair bounced up and down.
The old woman walked up to me. "Sorry, but you will have to show some sort of identification to take home that girl." She said. Then I saw Thalia. A little boy was staring at her leg.
"WOAH WHAT HAPPENED?" He gasped. "I fell, and got an owie on my leg." Thalia said as sweet as she could manage. Thalia didn't do sweet. The boy made a terrible mistake: he poked through Thalia's stitches.
Thalia screamed. Then the lights started to flicker. And, of course, they exploded. The room went into darkness. Thalia shot a lightning bolt (which I'm guessing was aimed at the boy) and hit a toy, because I heard "Momma! Momma!" Slower and slower until it burst into flames. The kids started to squeal and scream. "Single file line, kids, hurry!" The lady said, but the kids didn't pay much attention.
The fire spread rapidly, as the shack was 90% wood. I jumped through a window, and looked around. A crowd had gathered. I then saw relief: a fire hydrant.
Yes, that sounded like a dog, but I meant what was inside it. Water. I ran and willed the water inside to burst. And it did. I shoved it onto the orphanage, just as the fire truck arrived. Kids with scorched clothes and hair stood next to the scene. And Linda was blowing a ember higher into the air.
I stood, mouth open. Soon, people started staring at me. I'm guessing the mist just made it look like a broke the fire hydrant, but maybe I should get out of there. "Thalia," I whispered, "Take Linda and let's go!"
We started to run. People started shouting at us, but Thalia willed a thunderstorm to break it up. This has been a heck of a day. The only part that really made me sad, well, two parts really. One: telling Linda to buck up, or else monsters would kill her. Two: Those orphans had no home.
Then I noticed how Linda was walking. She was walking on air. "Linda, how are you doing that?" I asked. "Oh, I dunno. Just can." Linda mumbled. I think the fire broke through her princess fairy tale stage.

Annabeth doesn't have blue eyes, they're grey. Thalia has black hair not brown If you meant to make it that way, it's fine but for people who are huge fans of the books would think this wrong | | | 02-23-2010, 10:50 PM | #7 | Goodbye!
