Common name in 1994. Actually, number one in America. Smith. About the most boring, original name. Nothing set Jessica Smith apart. She was just a miss-matched outcast. No one appreciated her style. She liked to wear plaid shorts and multi-colored shirts. So what set her apart? Nothing. Chapter 1 Jessica waited for the bus on a normal, Tuesday morning. Normal, right? She was thinking the same thing as she did every morning: I hope I have a good day at school and some guy actually notices me. Normal fifteen-year-old-girl thoughts, right? Jessica was wearing orange and black plaid shorts with an Aeropostale shirt. Normal teenage attire, right? So I guess that you would say Jessica was pretty normal, right? Wrong. Jessica got on her bus. Normal. She sat down next to her best friend. Normal. She got off at school. Normal. She went to her locker. Normal. She went to her homeroom. Normal. She sat in her first row seat. Normal. Justin, the most popular boy in the 10th grade, looked at her. Normal? Not a chance. Jessica noticed it to. She blushed and turned towards the front. Justin walked over and sat down in his seat two rows away. He started scribbling something down. Jessica started talking to her friend, Abigail. Justin got up to sharpen his pencil and dropped a note on Jessica's desk. Not normal. Not. At. All. Chapter 2 It had to have been forever since Jessica had really looked at Justin, let alone even thought about him in a way 15-year-old-girls think about boys. She stared oddly at the note through the entire period, not daring to open it while sitting next to her best friend. She wanted to keep it to herself, wanted to read it in seperate. When the bell rang for 1st period, it felt that a cinder block had been lifted off her shoulders. She grabbed her books and ran to her locker. She had 5 minutes to read the note, grab her books, and get to the third floor. Luckily, her locker was close to her homeroom/1st period, so she grabbed her books and decided to read while she walked. How come I've never noticed you around before? We've been going to school for 11 years and I've never once really, truly looked at you. Do you mind if I sit with you at lunch? I'd like to get to know you. It's Jessica Smith, right?
-Justin Jessica wasn't sure if she should take this as a compliment, but she thought she should. Funny, how Justin's locker was next to the classroom she was going to. She wrote him back a note. Umm... I don't care if you sit by me... that's all I can say though.
- Jessica Chapter 3 Jessica still seems pretty normal, right? Well, nothing so far has set her apart yet, right? Wrong. Learn to read between the lines.
But if this story had been about anyone but Jessica, it would have been a normal story. Her first abnormal notice is in the prologue. I believe I have hinted to it more than anything. But, few have the true talent of reading between the lines. But forget you and your silly, lack of noticing things, let's get back to our story of Jessica Smith, the 'normal' girl.
Jessica counted down until lunch during 5th period. Thirty-seven minutes. Thirty-four minutes. The teacher called on her. "If the number of minutes that it takes for train A to approach here is 784, and it takes train B the square root of that number to get to the same spot, in minutes, how many minutes will it take for train B to approach the same spot? Ms. Smith?" asked Mrs. Grabble. "Ms. Smith?" asked Mrs. Grabble again. "MS. SMITH!" "TWENTY-EIGHT MINUTES!" said Jessica loudly. If it wasn't obvious, Jessica wasn't paying attention. Lucky for her, the time until lunch was the same as the answer. "Very well Ms. Smith. And I thought you weren't paying attention," said Mrs. Grabble. Jessica forced a weak smile. Twenty-two minutes. Fourteen minutes. Eight minutes. Fifty seconds. Twenty seconds. Three, two... "BRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIING.'' The bell rang for lunch. Jessica didn't even copy the homework assignment, she'd check it on the computer at home. Jessica ran down the staircase from the fifth floor. Her locker was on the first. She threw her books in her locker, panting. She snatched her lunch money and walked quickly, but calmly, to the lunch room. Jessica grabbed a lunch tray, shivering at the cold temperature in the lunch room. The smiling lunch lady handed her spaghetti with parmaesan, Jessica grabbed an apple, a milk, and quickly got out. Handing the cashier her money while looking around the lunch room, she barely noticed Abigail pop up behind her.
"Usual table?" She asked.
"As always, Abby," Jessica replied, smiling. She took her tray to the table and sat down. What if the note was a joke. Oh great, now I've gotten my hopes up for nothing. He's never going to come sit... And before Jessica could finish her thought, Justin Prowell was sitting beside her. Chapter 4 So far, this is sounding like your typical, teenage girl story. I know, trust me, I've read plenty of them. I wouldn't blame you if you're getting bored by this time. But let me tell you, this isn't like Twilight (no offense Twilight-ers), where you have to wait eight chapters until you FINALLY reveal the plot. Wow, that book was bor-ing. Well, Jessica's story is not like your typical, fifteen-year-old-drool-to-cool-cause-shes-dating-a-popular-guy story. No, not even close. Jessica tried to force a smile. Her eyes were wide, her mouth gaping open. She couldn't, and almost didn't, believe that Justin Prowell was sitting beside her. HER! One of the, wait, scratch that, THE most miss-matched, outcasted girl in the school. Jessica turned around and quickly shook her head, rubbed her eyes, and turned around. Surely enough, Justin was sitting beside her, smiling. I'm not halloucinating? She thought to herself. Jessica had a lot of self doubt and trust issues because of a certain, third-grade incident, but that's another story.
"Hi," said Justin, his perfect, white teeth smiling at her. ME!She thought, once again. His perfect skin, perfect hair, perfect build. Face it! Justin Prowell was, in general, PERFECT!
"H-h... umm... hi," Jessica managed to spit out. Abigail sat down on her opposite side.
"Hey girl, what's Justin Prowell doing at our table?" Abigail whispered to Jessica, then smiled at Justin. If Justin liked anyone, it would be Abigail. Perfect hair, shiny teeth, rich. Everything Jessica wasn't. Yet, Abigail wasn't popular. Oh great, now Justin's using me to get to Abigail, go figure! Jessica thought, once again.
"I don't know," Jessica whispered back. "You're guess is as good as mine."
"Are you ladies going to eat or just whisper to eachother?" Justin said, smiling his tooth smile, once again.
"Right," Jessica said, and started eating her spaghetti, but slowed down wuivkly when she remembered just who was sitting beside her.
During the lunch period, small talk was made, smiles were given, and Jessica kept wondering why me? But once the lunch period was over and Abigail had hurried to class, Justin took Jessica aside.
"Ok, I'm not going to ask you out, but I do like you Jessica," Justin said. "It's not that I don't want to ask you out, it's just..."
"Your friends," Jessica finished for him.
"That, and, well, I'm just not the right guy for you," Justin said.
"What do you mean?" Jessica asked. *Edited out for the sake of young ones*
"But, I can put that aside," Jessica said, hopefully.
"Jessica, trust me. I. Am. Not. Right. For. You," Justin said, then walked away.
