One skein each is more than enough. Needles: Size 6 American. Gauge: 5 sts equal 1 inch. Tapestry needle Sweater back: With yellow: Cast on 40 st. Knit 1 Purl 1 for 2 rows. Knit 8 rows in stocking stitch. (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) With orange: Knit 8 rows in stocking stitch. With brown: Knit 8 rows in stocking stitch. Put the 40 stitches on a holder. Sweater Front: With yellow: Cast on 22 stitches. Knit 1 Purl one for 2 rows. Knit 8 rows in stocking stitch. With orange: Knit 8 rows in stocking stitch. In 8th row, cast off 7 stitches, purl 8 stitches, cast off last 7. This begins the arm hole. With brown: Knit 8 rows in stocking stitch. Put the 8 stitches on holder. Sweater sleeves (front legs) Make 2 With brown: Cast on 24 stitches. Knit 1, Purl 1 for 2 rows. Knit one row, purl one row. With yellow: Knit 6 rows in stocking stitch. With orange: Knit 6 rows in stocking stitch. Bind off. Assembly (This is a little tricky). With right sides facing, sew the side seams of the arms. Starting at the armhole, sew 6 stitches of the top of the arm to the front of the sweater, leave 7 stitches un sewn, and sew 6 stitches to the back. You will have to ease in the stitches a bit. You will end up with the top of the arms sewn to the brown portion of the sweater. Sew the second arm the same way. Sew the sides of the sweater together. Collar With brown: Knit the 8 stitches from the holder on the front of the sweater, pick up 7 stitches from the top of the sleeve, knit 40 stitches from the holder on the back of the sweater, and pick up 7 stitches from the second sleeve. Knit 1, purl 1 for 4 rows, cast off. I noticed that the collar was loose, so I took a small crochet hook and slip stitch a row on top to tighten it up. You may have to decrease stitches in the ribbing. Sew sides of collar together. Toque Knit from top to bottom. With brown: Cast on 11 stitches, leaving a long tail for gathering. Row one: Knit 1 stitch, increase 1 stitch Repeat until end of row. 22 stitches. Row two: Purl 3, increase 1 stitch, repeat until end of row. 29 stitches. Row three: Knit 3 increase 1 stitch, repeat until end of row. 39 stitches. Row four and 5: Repeat last two rows. You should have 56 stitches when done. With orange: Knit 5 rows in stocking stitch. With yellow: Knit 2 rows in stocking stitch. Row 3: Ear flaps. Bind off 8 stitches. Slip next stitch on right needle, knit next stitch, slip second stitch from right needle over knit stitch. Decrease made. Knit next 12 stitches, knit two stitches together. Turn, and purl 14 stitches. Turn. Decrease one stitch st beginning of row, knit next 120 stitches, knit two together. Repeat these two rows until 2 stitches remain. Purl last 2 stitches together and bind off leaving a long tail. Attach yellow yarn and bind off next 16 stitches. Next 16 stitches, repeat for the second ear flap. Attach yellow yarn and bind off remaining stitches. Sew up the sides of the toque. Using the long tail of the brown yarn, weave the yarn back and forth through the first row and pull to gather the top shut. Tack on yarn. If you want you can crochet a chain at the ends of the earflaps using the long tail of the yellow, or leave it as a string of about 3 inches.
